The mother of a teenager who was shot five times in the legs

has described his attackers as disgusting.

18-year-old Gareth Fisher was targeted at his home in Londonderry

The family have been speaking to our North West reporter, Keiron Tourish.

18-year-old Gareth Bishop was shot three times in one leg and twice in

the other, just after 11pm last night. Two masked men arrived at his

home and made their way into a shed where the teenager was watching a

video with a friend. The gunmen shot through a plaster cast which Gareth

Fisher had on one leg after a recent motorcycle accident. They do as they

want or nothing at all. Do as they want. Shocking. Disgusting. That is

all they are. I can't even find a word to describe them. Why do you

think they did this? I don't have a clue. I really don't have a clue. It

is shocking. The people who do that. It is shooting children. Children

shooting children. The 18-year-old underwent surgery for several hours

as he is anxious relatives awaited news. We want peace. We will fight

for peace. We want this to stop. We will stop it. It is heartbreaking to

watch that family falling apart. That is his mother and that is her

baby and nobody in the world has a right to hurt him. One former mayors

said the attack was horrendous. It is brutal in its nature. Shot in

both legs. It is barbaric. The police have issued an appeal for

witnesses. They say they are still trying to establish a motive and are

following a number of lines of inquiry. They say there can be no

justification for the shooting. A man is critically ill

in hospital after being rescued He was found floating

in the river at Meadow Lane The police say if it wasn't for the

people who rescued him he'd be dead. A report that he may have been

assaulted in the area around eight o'clock

is being investigated. A 23-year-old

man has been arrested. The SDLP leader, Alasdair McDonnell,

has called on the police to extend their policy on the erection

of flags in south Belfast to Yesterday, the police said they'd

treat Loyalist flags in a mixed area of the Ormeau Road in south Belfast

as a breach of the peace. The police have made it clear, any

more flags put up in this mixed part of South Belfast will be treated as

a breach of the piece, but the SDLP says that what the police do on the

Ormeau Road they should also do elsewhere. The point is that the

action should not be confined just to one area. It has to be extended

to include other contentious areas of South Belfast, but not just South

Belfast. It has to extend right across the country. People should

not be allowed to use the flag when the British national flag or

otherwise as a tribal element and an element of provocation. The police

move in South Belfast led to a number of questions. Was it a

wholesale change in policy, and what exactly would it mean on the ground?

The Progressive Unionist Party wants answers. I want to see how they are

going to do it fairly and how they will place it. Do we need a lease

officer at every lamp, every time we the people will put flags, or how do

do this? -- a police officer. The sequence of events this week has

led to a lot of confusion around what is already a complex issue.

Disagreement over flags is nothing new, but there is already one thing

which all sides agree on. The police cannot solve the problem on their

own. A court's been told that staff from

the Police Ombudsman's Office have been turned away from PSNI buildings

as part of the alleged obstruction The claim was made at the High Court

as the Ombudsman, Michael Maguire, began his attempt to force

the Chief Constable to hand over sensitive information relating to

60 murder cases. The judge gave the go-ahead

for the Ombudsman's case to continue, but said he hoped both

sides could resolve the situation. More than 90 people in Northern

Ireland have been recognised in Retired deputy chief constable

Hollywood continued to stay patient and slowly crept up the second round

leaderboard. Still a very long way to go but the tournament is over for

Shane Lowry and Darren Clarke, who looked like they will miss the

halfway cut off. There was also a surprise

announcement today for the Belfast Giants,

with the news that general manager Todd Kelman is leaving.

He has been with the team since its creation but is now part of a

consortium taking over another Elite League side, the Cardiff Devils.

Temperatures down to 11 or 12 degrees. Maybe just a bit

uncomfortable for trying to get to sleep. But as we go through into

tomorrow, high pressure is in charge and it will be a cloudy and mild day

though staying pretty dry just about everywhere. This is the picture you

will be waking up to. The odd shower but very few and far between and

light in terms of the showers we are going to see as we go through the

day on Saturday. That is because we have this the ridge of high pressure

becoming firmly established to the rest of Ireland -- the West of

Ireland. That gives us protection into next week. Very good conditions

indeed across the UK and Ireland. Very little in the way of rain. Just

the remains of a weather front delivering a few showers across

western parts of England and Wales. Very few showers for Ireland, both

the Republic and Northern Ireland. Through the day, plenty of hype

cloud around so not much sunshine but the temperature is quite

reasonable. If anything, Sunday will be a better day. A few more breaks

in the cloud. A bit more sunshine, and certainly the temperatures are

on their way up. What we have in the next few days is a very settled look

to our weather, with very decent temperatures to enjoy.
