Good evening, the headlines on BBC Newsline: | :00:00. | :00:17.
He was joy to be around - one of the tributes paid to | :00:18. | :00:21.
the little boy who died in a tragedy on the north coast. | :00:22. | :00:24.
The woman stabbed to death in her home - her partner's | :00:25. | :00:28.
We hear the fears for the out of hours doctors service | :00:29. | :00:35.
We are not yet at the precipice, we are not far off. | :00:36. | :00:49.
It's official - one of the biggest tournaments in golf | :00:50. | :00:51.
is coming back to Royal Portrush after more than half a century. | :00:52. | :00:54.
I'll be live on the course with all the reaction. | :00:55. | :00:58.
The fine weather is set to continue - I'll have the full forecast later. | :00:59. | :01:07.
Logan Crawford - described today as a wonderful wee | :01:08. | :01:10.
The seven-year-old died after falling from a cliff | :01:11. | :01:16.
He'd been playing with friends not far from where he lived. | :01:17. | :01:30.
Logan Crawford fell along the coastline close to his home, a | :01:31. | :01:36.
dangerous coastline. Today a police car beside the spot where he fell | :01:37. | :01:43.
down a sheer cliff face. The area is known for its beauty. It was while | :01:44. | :01:48.
playing on a summers day that this tragedy unfolded. Leaving a family | :01:49. | :01:52.
grieving and almost 200 children coming to terms with the loss of | :01:53. | :01:55.
their friend. Logan's School principal said he was a wonderful | :01:56. | :02:00.
boy with a real zest for life. Everyone loved him because he was a | :02:01. | :02:05.
character and such a joy be around. The exact circumstances of how the | :02:06. | :02:08.
little boy fail are still being investigated. We learned backs onto | :02:09. | :02:12.
the spot where the tragedy happened in an area popular with tourists for | :02:13. | :02:17.
its breathtaking beauty but locals know that the scenery can be matched | :02:18. | :02:22.
by danger. The rescue services, all too familiar with that danger, and | :02:23. | :02:26.
always among the first to respond. Our lifeboat was first on the scene | :02:27. | :02:33.
here, along with the local coastguard. With the cliffs, we knew | :02:34. | :02:36.
that the child had fallen over the cliff. You just try and do your very | :02:37. | :02:44.
best. Unfortunately after the child was found, the father was on the | :02:45. | :02:49.
shoreline, so we took him on board the lifeboat and chicken here and he | :02:50. | :02:55.
was taken to the hospital. The father 's journey to hospital ended | :02:56. | :02:58.
in heartache, learning that his son did not survive the fall. The rescue | :02:59. | :03:04.
services responded to three emergencies along the coast | :03:05. | :03:07.
yesterday. In one, and injured fisherman was rescued and in | :03:08. | :03:12.
another, a diver lost his life, and last night, this tragedy. Today, the | :03:13. | :03:18.
police investigation is still evident along the busy tourist route | :03:19. | :03:20.
and at the entrance to the scene of the tragedy, a tribute. | :03:21. | :03:35.
A 41-year-old man has been in court charged with the murder | :03:36. | :03:38.
It's understood that mother of two, Denise Dunlop, was stabbed several | :03:39. | :03:42.
times in her Ballymena home early yesterday morning. | :03:43. | :03:49.
Denise Dunlop was found in the early hours of yesterday morning, it was | :03:50. | :03:55.
thought she had been stabbed several times with a knife. Forensics teams | :03:56. | :04:00.
spend much of the day in and around the home. The houses there were | :04:01. | :04:03.
previously used as family accommodation for soldiers on the | :04:04. | :04:07.
site of the former Saint Patrick 's barracks. They were taken over by a | :04:08. | :04:13.
housing association and civilian families moved in late last year. | :04:14. | :04:16.
The death shocked many locals. They described the area is | :04:17. | :04:21.
The death shocked many locals. They quiet and peaceful. Before Coleraine | :04:22. | :04:24.
court this morning was a partner of Denise Dunlop. He is a 41-year-old | :04:25. | :04:31.
who is unemployed and from Portland on. He is accused of the murder of | :04:32. | :04:34.
the 32-year-old. During the two-minute hearing, Richard McAuley, | :04:35. | :04:40.
dressed in a blue top and blue trousers, sat impassive in the dock. | :04:41. | :04:44.
He spoke only ones to confirm that he understood the charge. A | :04:45. | :04:48.
detective told the court that he believed he could connect him to the | :04:49. | :04:52.
offence. He was remanded in custody until the 10th of July. No | :04:53. | :04:57.
application was made for appeal during the brief hearing. | :04:58. | :05:00.
The worst kept secret in the golfing world was officially | :05:01. | :05:03.
confirmed today with the news that the Open will be held in | :05:04. | :05:07.
It's the biggest golf tournament and since we broke the story here on | :05:08. | :05:14.
BBC Newsline last week, the reaction has been very positive from sports | :05:15. | :05:19.
We could not have asked for better weather to showcase the Norfolk | :05:20. | :05:39.
coast. It has been a glorious afternoon and in a few moments, we | :05:40. | :05:43.
will assess the potential economic benefits of today's announcement but | :05:44. | :05:47.
this is, without doubt, an historic day for this iconic golf course. It | :05:48. | :05:53.
will once again welcomed the blessed players -- the best players on the | :05:54. | :05:57.
planet. The character jug glistened in the sunshine, the Open dream, is | :05:58. | :06:05.
now a jealousy. I suppose this is just about the world 's worst | :06:06. | :06:12.
secret! On behalf of the organisers, I can confirm that we have invited | :06:13. | :06:16.
Will Portrush both club to become a guest venue for the Open jumping | :06:17. | :06:22.
ship. The significance of the announcement, not just in a sporting | :06:23. | :06:25.
context, was reinforced by the First Minister. This is what peace and | :06:26. | :06:30.
stability looks like. From an executive point of view, this just | :06:31. | :06:34.
would not have happened, these men would not have dreamt of coming here | :06:35. | :06:39.
20 years ago. This shows the new Northern Ireland in a new era. I | :06:40. | :06:46.
think this provides people with the hope of what normality looks like. | :06:47. | :06:52.
Several million pounds will be spent by organisers to make changes to the | :06:53. | :06:56.
chorus by the executive will also invest significantly, some of which | :06:57. | :06:59.
will be used to improve the structure. A huge undertaking. We | :07:00. | :07:08.
will have to be sure that we can face that with minimum disruption | :07:09. | :07:14.
here. There is also the television needs with huge companies from all | :07:15. | :07:19.
over the world broadcasting the event. The terrain is quite rugged | :07:20. | :07:27.
and we have to be able to move spectators around safely. A lot to | :07:28. | :07:32.
do. As far as I'm concerned, this is an art of the world announcement. | :07:33. | :07:39.
The Open being held here, it will be an out of this world experience for | :07:40. | :07:46.
the golfing fanatics on this island. We have been able to bring to these | :07:47. | :07:49.
shores what is widely seen as one of the most prestigious events. | :07:50. | :07:59.
When the Irish Open was here two years ago, 27,000 people attended | :08:00. | :08:02.
It was a sell-out and seen as a real tourism boost. | :08:03. | :08:05.
Mark Simpson has been weighing up the economic benefits | :08:06. | :08:08.
These are exciting times for Portrush. It has always been a town | :08:09. | :08:19.
associated with entertainment. Now comes one of the world 's most | :08:20. | :08:23.
famous sporting events. Like everything, it comes at a price. | :08:24. | :08:27.
Stormont ministers won't say exactly how much they are paying to bring | :08:28. | :08:32.
the Open here. I will say this, in terms of the money we are putting | :08:33. | :08:37.
in, the millions will come back tenfold to us and I don't think | :08:38. | :08:40.
anybody could underestimate this happening here today. Is it millions | :08:41. | :08:47.
or tens of millions? I have made it clear that I will not speculate. I | :08:48. | :08:51.
have said that the millions we will put in, we will get back in tens of | :08:52. | :08:56.
millions. Give us up all part of Mac figure is believed to be in the | :08:57. | :09:04.
region of ?7 million. Economic return is suggested at ?70 million | :09:05. | :09:08.
but will any of the money come to Portrush itself? Absolutely, they | :09:09. | :09:13.
will not be a bed breakfast or hotel to be God during that week and | :09:14. | :09:18.
for every good weekend leading up to it. That is what traders were told | :09:19. | :09:25.
before the Open two years ago and some were left disappointed as many | :09:26. | :09:28.
spectators watched the golf but did not come into the town centre. A lot | :09:29. | :09:33.
of businesses here at up for a lot of people coming but it never | :09:34. | :09:39.
happened. Disappointing, I think. Lessons have been learned and the | :09:40. | :09:40.
happened. Disappointing, I think. news that the Open is now coming to | :09:41. | :09:45.
town is going down well. It is good for Portrush in general. We all work | :09:46. | :09:49.
together as a team to show how lovely it is so if it benefits one | :09:50. | :09:55.
area, it will benefit us all. It is something for everyone to do, they | :09:56. | :10:00.
can walk the beaches, see us, visit restaurants. There is the odd | :10:01. | :10:05.
grumble but overall the mood is very positive. People are looking forward | :10:06. | :10:09.
to showing of this spectacular part of the world. Sun, sea and sand. See | :10:10. | :10:17.
and sound are guaranteed anywhere! It may be for another five years but | :10:18. | :10:21.
it seems the Open on the north coast will be worth waiting for. Whatever | :10:22. | :10:31.
the weather! The First Minister joked today, | :10:32. | :10:36.
saying he has already booked weather like this for the Open when it | :10:37. | :10:39.
arrives in Portrush. I will be back here later in the programme. | :10:40. | :10:43.
the football captain who has defied conventional medicine to get back | :10:44. | :10:46.
The way in which people get health treatment | :10:47. | :10:57.
treatment outside normal hours in the Southern Health Trust is heavily | :10:58. | :11:01.
copy of that report. It's designed to improve services and is a | :11:02. | :11:09.
snapshot of how they are operated and what needs to be done. It will | :11:10. | :11:19.
It will make worrying reading for both the Trust and the Department | :11:20. | :11:27.
Many of us will have the experience of leading a doctor out of hours, | :11:28. | :11:34.
after the surgery has closed, usually about 6:30. In the Southern | :11:35. | :11:38.
Health Trust, the service is located at five centres - Dungannon, Ahmad, | :11:39. | :11:44.
Craigavon, Newry and Kilkeel. Anyone needing a doctor will be referred to | :11:45. | :11:50.
them. The report contains pointed criticism. To share their views, | :11:51. | :11:55.
some 30 to start went to three workshops and by the trust. The | :11:56. | :12:00.
report details criticism of the workload, working environment, | :12:01. | :12:04.
resources, the way people work and management. And it comes to the | :12:05. | :12:08.
specifics, one staff member said, covering shifts at Craigavon felt | :12:09. | :12:15.
like walking into hell. Taking away one GP's shipped from the out of | :12:16. | :12:20.
hours Rota was described as a catastrophe. Staff to not believe | :12:21. | :12:23.
the service can run safely with just two GPs at night. The Royal College | :12:24. | :12:29.
of GPs says it is worrying. We are not yet at the precipice, we are not | :12:30. | :12:35.
far off. GP services, community services, our district nurses and | :12:36. | :12:42.
health visitors, these are the cornerstone of the NHS. Without | :12:43. | :12:44.
investment in these, the whole thing will collapse. A large number of | :12:45. | :12:50.
staff apparently referred to a bullying and blame culture and also | :12:51. | :12:53.
talked of experiencing threats and harassment. But it comes to those | :12:54. | :12:58.
needing treatment, staff said the system leaves vulnerable though | :12:59. | :13:02.
people wishing for unacceptable lengths of time. One grandmother | :13:03. | :13:06.
told us about taking her grandson to the out of hours service. If I had | :13:07. | :13:12.
taken him to AMD, I would have been waiting five or six hours. The whole | :13:13. | :13:18.
system seems to be a continuity of care. Today the trust said action | :13:19. | :13:23.
has already been taken including what it described as ongoing | :13:24. | :13:27.
recruitment for GPs, flexible working, enhanced pay for certain | :13:28. | :13:32.
shifts, and a phased introduction of skilled nurses. In an earlier | :13:33. | :13:35.
statement, the trust said, only a small minority of its 240 out of | :13:36. | :13:41.
hours staff attended the workshops. It says it remains fully committed | :13:42. | :13:46.
to providing the GP out of hours service, adding that it will | :13:47. | :13:49.
continue to work with staff to improve it despite the challenges | :13:50. | :13:55.
involved. After the workshops, some 38 individual recommendations | :13:56. | :13:57.
emerged so the trust clearly will have plenty of suggestions as to | :13:58. | :14:01.
just how it might address some of those challenges. | :14:02. | :14:24.
An attempt to have Sinn Fein's Gerry Kelly excluded from the Assembly | :14:25. | :14:27.
for five days has failed after it was thwarted by the SDLP. | :14:28. | :14:30.
The sanction had been proposed by the Stormont Standards | :14:31. | :14:32.
and Privileges Committee after Mr Kelly was found to have broken | :14:33. | :14:35.
However SDLP MLAs signed a petition of concern requiring any | :14:36. | :14:40.
exclusion to be subjected to a cross community vote. | :14:41. | :14:45.
This is the moment Gerry Kelly earned himself a five-day suspension | :14:46. | :14:52.
from Stormont will stop the sanction was proposed by the assembly's | :14:53. | :14:55.
Standards and Privileges Committee but today the midfield with Sinn | :14:56. | :15:02.
Fein blocking the motion and received support from the SDLP. | :15:03. | :15:09.
Given the circumstances when Gerry Kelly made his intervention, in | :15:10. | :15:15.
order to try and defuse the situation, does that not mean that | :15:16. | :15:25.
technical breach of the law which took place should in fact be looked | :15:26. | :15:30.
at in a different light? No, said unionists, who turned their anger on | :15:31. | :15:40.
the SDLP. Acting spineless today, in supporting this petition of concern. | :15:41. | :15:46.
This is a day that will go down in infamy because this is a day when it | :15:47. | :15:49.
is made clear to this assembly that you can breach the law and there is | :15:50. | :15:53.
no consequence for any number in this house. The speaker had to | :15:54. | :15:57.
intervene several times to tell members to mind the language. I have | :15:58. | :16:03.
listened to your heckling all day and I wish you would shut up! Order! | :16:04. | :16:12.
Order! I would like to remind members, be careful of the language | :16:13. | :16:19.
you use in the chamber. The boat on whether to suspend Gerry Kelly or | :16:20. | :16:22.
not take place until the morning but already the result is a foregone | :16:23. | :16:25.
conclusion, to the great annoyance of | :16:26. | :16:25.
A company in east Belfast has secured a ?48 million order | :16:26. | :16:32.
for a new weapons system from the Ministry of Defence. | :16:33. | :16:36.
The Thales UK facility in Castlereagh will manufacture | :16:37. | :16:38.
The French-owned company employs 450 people in Northern Ireland. | :16:39. | :16:48.
We know that they like to see it being deployed by British forces so | :16:49. | :16:59.
we think that will be good for the future which will help secure jobs | :17:00. | :17:03.
in this part of the country for many years to come. | :17:04. | :17:04.
Let's go back now to Royal Portrush golf course, due to be host | :17:05. | :17:07.
of the Open championship in 2019 at the earliest, where Thomas Kane | :17:08. | :17:11.
can update us on the rest of today's sports news. | :17:12. | :17:19.
I am standing just yards from the first tee here at Royal Portrush. | :17:20. | :17:24.
I am standing just yards from the The confirmation that the Open will | :17:25. | :17:24.
come back The confirmation that the Open will | :17:25. | :17:28.
time is not just registered here but also globally. | :17:29. | :17:34.
has been gauging reaction from a galaxy of the game?s finest in North | :17:35. | :17:37.
America - among them our own local stars and arguably the best leftie | :17:38. | :17:40.
The world 's best players are genuinely excited to be playing | :17:41. | :17:50.
again in Northern Ireland, none more so than the reigning Open champion, | :17:51. | :17:57.
Phil Mickelson. It is exciting to see how players like Darren Clarke | :17:58. | :18:02.
and Rory McIlroy are so excited to have it in Ireland. I have played | :18:03. | :18:06.
Royal Portrush, I think it is a wonderful course. Royal Portrush is | :18:07. | :18:12.
one of the best in all the world and to have an Open Championship go | :18:13. | :18:18.
there is very exciting. He finished second to Darren Clarke when he | :18:19. | :18:22.
opened the Open in 2011. Darren Clarke is thrilled at the day's | :18:23. | :18:30.
confirmation. It is not just people from the UK coming over, it is | :18:31. | :18:33.
global, people from all over the world. People don't realise how much | :18:34. | :18:38.
money will be generated to the Hall of Northern Ireland by it. We should | :18:39. | :18:41.
all be very proud, we have one of the biggest sporting event in the | :18:42. | :18:47.
world coming to our little country. It is going to be an unbelievable | :18:48. | :18:52.
week. Rory McIlroy and Graeme McDowell were unable to challenge | :18:53. | :18:57.
here at the U.S. Open on the final day but both told me they want to | :18:58. | :19:02.
content when the Open comes home. In 2019, I will be turning 40 that | :19:03. | :19:07.
year. That is a sobering thought! I am hoping to be still contending, | :19:08. | :19:13.
still in the top 50 in the world. Still hoping to be playing | :19:14. | :19:20.
championship golf. Fingers crossed, it will be incredible. I never | :19:21. | :19:26.
thought I would be able to play and Open championships at home so it is | :19:27. | :19:30.
not too far away, five years time, I am really looking forward to it. I | :19:31. | :19:37.
have played Portrush well in the past and hopefully I can do the same | :19:38. | :19:41.
again. It is not just the players who are excited. One caddy here at | :19:42. | :19:47.
one reason to celebrate, he is from Portrush. The course is one of the | :19:48. | :19:52.
top five in the world in my estimation. A lot of the American | :19:53. | :19:55.
players have never had the chance to come to Ireland and it gives them | :19:56. | :20:00.
the chance to come here now and play one of the best golf courses in the | :20:01. | :20:05.
world. Many of the caddies and golfer is now head to Cork for the | :20:06. | :20:08.
Irish Open and we will have more reaction to this story in this week. | :20:09. | :20:19.
The prestigious amateur championship is taking place, you can see the | :20:20. | :20:23.
tented village behind me. Some of the best amateur players in the | :20:24. | :20:28.
world are taking part. It has been a hugely proud day for the club and | :20:29. | :20:32.
the captain joins me now. When you hear the likes of those big | :20:33. | :20:38.
players, the top players all over the globe, speaking so highly about | :20:39. | :20:41.
Portrush, how much pride does it give the members? Huge pride. We | :20:42. | :20:46.
have had this for a long time, we had known about this. We adore this | :20:47. | :20:53.
place and we just wanted to bring the rest of the world in to show | :20:54. | :20:56.
them and these players that you mention, they have been a huge help | :20:57. | :21:01.
to us along the way, highlighting it and it is their clamour that has | :21:02. | :21:05.
helped us bring today about. What happens now from the club | :21:06. | :21:09.
prospective? We have to get together in the summer with the course | :21:10. | :21:13.
architect and there are some changes planned. Two new holes will be built | :21:14. | :21:20.
and there are exciting new possibilities for a new course. We | :21:21. | :21:24.
mentioned the amateur championship taking place, some of the best are | :21:25. | :21:29.
dreaming of playing in the Open for real in a few years? Yes, they are | :21:30. | :21:33.
our future and it is amazing to have this on a day like this, and | :21:34. | :21:37.
historic day with this information being released, you could not write | :21:38. | :21:40.
it! On Friday?s BBC Newsline we brought | :21:41. | :21:43.
you the remarkable story of Monaghan Gaelic football captain | :21:44. | :21:46.
Conor McManus. A nasty injury seemed to have ruled | :21:47. | :21:49.
him out of the game for this summer but on Sunday he confounded | :21:50. | :21:53.
conventional medicine to captain his As he led his county on a | :21:54. | :22:08.
walkabout, it concluded a journey which had seen him scour the | :22:09. | :22:13.
country, a faith healer, herbalist, oxygen tent and a bicycle dash all | :22:14. | :22:19.
were accessed and by way of acknowledgement for his league of | :22:20. | :22:25.
helpers came a half-dozen contrary points. All the more remarkable that | :22:26. | :22:32.
meant a ligament tear meant he had not kicked a ball for six weeks. The | :22:33. | :22:35.
result is, they have gone more than a dozen games undefeated at home. No | :22:36. | :22:43.
modern has managed to do this for more than two dozen years. As this | :22:44. | :22:49.
cake coated wide, Tyrone tumbled out of Ulster, beaten by Monaghan for | :22:50. | :22:58.
the first time since 1988. Immediately, the focus was on the | :22:59. | :23:04.
next challenge. You take each game on its own merits and we are not | :23:05. | :23:07.
looking any on its own merits and we are not | :23:08. | :23:12.
that is the next challenge for us. Next for Tyrone is loud in the all | :23:13. | :23:21.
Ireland qualifier. They will now aim to channel into that contrast. I | :23:22. | :23:34.
think Conor McManus can make it back to play, after an injury like that, | :23:35. | :23:41.
attending a faith healer, taking herbal drinks, there is still a | :23:42. | :23:45.
chance I could take part in the Open. I will head off to practice | :23:46. | :23:48.
now! We've had wall-to-wall sunshine | :23:49. | :23:54.
across many places over With temperatures soaring into | :23:55. | :23:57.
the twenties, we've been sent lots You wouldn't be far wrong comparing | :23:58. | :24:04.
the conditions to those the temperature in County Fermanagh | :24:05. | :24:14.
was more than five degrees warmer We were just shy of having | :24:15. | :24:21.
the warmest day of the year. More sunshine on the horizon? | :24:22. | :24:49.
Yes, I think I can promise some more sunshine. It has been a fantastic | :24:50. | :24:57.
day today. We mist out by 0.2 of a degree on the warmest day of the | :24:58. | :25:02.
year. As we go through this evening, the sky is becoming cloudy | :25:03. | :25:07.
overnight. It is another mild night with temperatures down to | :25:08. | :25:10.
overnight. It is another mild night degrees. As we go into tomorrow, it | :25:11. | :25:19.
is going to be another great day. As we go through the day on Tuesday, | :25:20. | :25:25.
increasingly dry and bright. This is the picture as we go through the | :25:26. | :25:32.
day. A bit of cloud and sea fog around to begin with but as we go | :25:33. | :25:36.
through the day, cloud gradually starts to clear and we will see some | :25:37. | :25:41.
brighter skies and that is reflected in the temperatures will | :25:42. | :25:45.
stop-tomorrow off again up to 21 degrees. Feeling very pleasant | :25:46. | :25:51.
indeed. It might just be enough to settle the odd shower in the late | :25:52. | :25:54.
afternoon but very few and far between. This was the picture at | :25:55. | :26:01.
McGilligan point yesterday and yesterday they recorded 14.7 hours | :26:02. | :26:12.
of sunshine. Plenty more about weather in the next few days. It is | :26:13. | :26:16.
all down to this high pressure system which is keeping our weather | :26:17. | :26:20.
beautifully settled in the next few days, protecting us and those | :26:21. | :26:28.
Atlantic weather fronts. This is the picture for Wednesday and if | :26:29. | :26:31.
anything, Wednesday is going to be the brightest of the next few days. | :26:32. | :26:34.
Plenty of sunshine around and that is reflected in the temperatures, | :26:35. | :26:39.
highs of 23 degrees. Maybe a few showers through the afternoon but | :26:40. | :26:43.
generally, very nice indeed. By Thursday, a little on the cooler | :26:44. | :26:49.
side but still perfectly usable and the story for this week is of some | :26:50. | :26:52.
very nice conditions ahead. A reminder of the headlines: | :26:53. | :27:12.
Tributes have been paid to seven-year-old Logan Crawford who | :27:13. | :27:15.
died after falling from a cliff in Ballycastle yesterday. It has been | :27:16. | :27:21.
officially announced that one of the world 's biggest golfing | :27:22. | :27:24.
tournaments, the Open, will be held at Royal Portrush, possibly in 2019. | :27:25. | :27:32.
Our late summary is at 10:25 year on BBC One. It can keep in contact with | :27:33. | :27:38.
us on Facebook and Twitter. Thank you for watching, enjoy the rest of | :27:39. | :27:40.
your evening, and the sunshine! Good night. | :27:41. | :27:45. |
