described as a vicious and sustained attack. | :00:15. | :00:16.
Last night in Twinbrook, they gathered to remember the life | :00:17. | :00:26.
His body was found on Saturday in an area known locally | :00:27. | :00:31.

and vicious assault during which he was kicked and beaten. | :00:39. | :00:42.
In Lisburn this morning, three teenagers were brought | :00:43. | :00:44.
to the Magistrates' Court, charged with his murder. | :00:45. | :00:47.
Appearing in the dock were 18-year-old Stephen McCann, | :00:48. | :00:50.
of Bearnagh Glen, Dunmurry, 18-year-old Lee Smyth | :00:51. | :00:53.
of Colinbrook Gardens, Dunmurry, and a 16-year-old boy who | :00:54. | :00:58.
All three were remanded in custody to appear again by video link | :00:59. | :01:04.
During the hearing around 25 family members and friends | :01:05. | :01:10.
His mother cried out in grief several times and eventually left | :01:11. | :01:15.
before the proceedings were completed. | :01:16. | :01:18.
Others addressed comments to the accused and were asked | :01:19. | :01:20.
A detective sergeant told the court he believed he could connect | :01:21. | :01:25.
But solicitors for all three of them cross-examined him, | :01:26. | :01:30.
one saying it was astounding that there was no other evidence | :01:31. | :01:33.
than his client's own account of events given to detectives. | :01:34. | :01:37.
It was revealed that at least two of the accused had attended | :01:38. | :01:40.
Grosvenor Road Police Station voluntarily as witnesses. | :01:41. | :01:43.
During these exchanges a picture emerged, a confusing one | :01:44. | :01:46.
from the accounts of the night of the killing. | :01:47. | :01:49.
There were many groups and individuals, some fighting | :01:50. | :01:52.
and claims of a knife being produced. | :01:53. | :01:55.
The detective sergeant told the court the PSNI has | :01:56. | :01:58.
The first group of Syrian refugee families has arrived in Belfast. | :01:59. | :02:09.
11 of them are children aged under five. | :02:10. | :02:13.
BBC Newsline's Tara Mills met a family from Syria who've lived | :02:14. | :02:16.
here for the past two years to see what it's been like to settle | :02:17. | :02:20.
They didn't want their surnames used in case of reprisal | :02:21. | :02:25.
Touching down in a new country far from home. | :02:26. | :02:31.
After two years living as refugees, 51 Syrians arrived in Belfast | :02:32. | :02:35.
And this family living in Lisburn knows exactly what they're facing. | :02:36. | :02:48.
While normal life is something they enjoy now, the journey to come | :02:49. | :02:51.
to Northern Ireland has been far from straightforward. | :02:52. | :02:55.
I discovered that we must find a safe place. | :02:56. | :02:59.
I told my wife because she has a foreign passport to go there | :03:00. | :03:04.
and find anything to survive my children, anything. | :03:05. | :03:08.
I told them I was ready to pay everything I have, | :03:09. | :03:11.
just to survive our family because... | :03:12. | :03:15.
As she was growing up, little did Abir know | :03:16. | :03:21.
that the fact her mum was from Belfast would eventually | :03:22. | :03:23.
First I went to Wales, where are my brothers, | :03:24. | :03:29.
I tried England but I found it better to come and live with Mummy | :03:30. | :03:35.
here because she was settled one year before me. | :03:36. | :03:39.
And this is the city they left behind | :03:40. | :03:41.
and with it, Mahfouz's career as a dentist. | :03:42. | :03:44.
His qualifications don't transfer to the UK, so instead he's working | :03:45. | :03:48.
It's manual work for blinds, and I need manual work, | :03:49. | :03:59.
12-year-old Hamza told me what he thinks of living here. | :04:00. | :04:10.
It's really nice, really peaceful and quiet. | :04:11. | :04:15.
People here are really friendly and it's better than Syria. | :04:16. | :04:21.
Were you aware of that even though you were young? | :04:22. | :04:26.
Yeah, I remember the bombings and at night sometimes | :04:27. | :04:31.
Abir has already volunteered to help the newcomer families, | :04:32. | :04:36.
Thankfully this family haven't experienced any racism | :04:37. | :04:41.
in the two years they've lived here, despite a sharp increase in attacks. | :04:42. | :04:45.
Life in Northern Ireland is something | :04:46. | :04:47.
We find it like a gift from the sky, from the heaven. | :04:48. | :04:57.
Any different passport to put our children in a safe place. | :04:58. | :05:00.
It's hoped the families arriving here today will feel the same | :05:01. | :05:03.
And tomorrow Good Morning Ulster will hear from two of the charities | :05:04. | :05:11.
who are helping the Syrian refugees settle in. | :05:12. | :05:14.
The programme is on BBC Radio Ulster starting at 6:30pm. | :05:15. | :05:19.
An attempt to halt the trial of an evangelical preacher has failed. | :05:20. | :05:22.
Pastor James McConnell's legal team argued in court today | :05:23. | :05:25.
that there was not enough evidence to prosecute him over remarks | :05:26. | :05:29.
he made about Islam in a sermon last year. | :05:30. | :05:33.
But a judge ruled that the case should continue. | :05:34. | :05:36.
BBC Newsline's Mark Simpson was in the court. | :05:37. | :05:41.
Pastor McConnell arrived for day two of his trial, | :05:42. | :05:43.
His legal team argued that the evidence against him | :05:44. | :05:48.
was so weak, the case should be thrown out. | :05:49. | :05:52.
He accepts that he called Islam "Satanic" and "heathen" | :05:53. | :05:57.
and that he talked about not trusting Muslims. | :05:58. | :06:01.
But he denies the comments were grossly offensive | :06:02. | :06:03.
This afternoon the judge weighed up the evidence so far in the case | :06:04. | :06:09.
and said the trial should continue, but he made it clear he hadn't | :06:10. | :06:14.
made up his mind on whether the Pastor was guilty or not. | :06:15. | :06:19.
He put a question to the defence barrister, Mr Mateer QC, | :06:20. | :06:23.
saying if a Belfast Muslim called Christianity Satanic or heathen | :06:24. | :06:29.
and said he didn't trust Christians in Britain, | :06:30. | :06:31.
would that be deemed grossly offensive? | :06:32. | :06:34.
The defence barrister said the words may be upsetting and disturbing | :06:35. | :06:39.
but he didn't deem them grossly offensive and they should be | :06:40. | :06:43.
The prosecution say they don't doubt that Pastor McConnell has | :06:44. | :07:04.
a deeply-held faith, but they say there are limits | :07:05. | :07:07.
to what can be said within the law, and that | :07:08. | :07:10.
The case continues tomorrow, when the Pastor may be | :07:11. | :07:15.
Cliftonville will meet Ards in the JBE League Cup final. | :07:16. | :07:25.

The game finished goalless after 90 minutes. | :07:29. | :07:34.
The match between Ards and Coleraine was decided on penalties. | :07:35. | :07:38.
In the County Antrim Shield, Linfield are through to the final. | :07:39. | :07:46.
The Blues opened the scoring through Niall Quinn, | :07:47. | :07:50.
Linfield now meet Ballymena United in the final, which is due to | :07:51. | :07:55.
BBC Television will be showing two of the Northern Ireland team's | :07:56. | :08:01.
Group C matches in the Euro 2016 football finals - | :08:02. | :08:05.
their opening game against Poland and closing group game | :08:06. | :08:08.
The BBC will also be showing the Republic's first | :08:09. | :08:12.
After a wet afternoon in most places, let's get the weather | :08:13. | :08:18.
forecast for the next few days from Cecilia Daly. | :08:19. | :08:25.
It's mild but with mild weather we often have lots of clothes and it | :08:26. | :08:33.
will be damp and murky tonight, rain on and off, most of it not too heavy | :08:34. | :08:39.
but the cloud will sink onto the hills, temperatures holding up well. | :08:40. | :08:46.
Tonight's temperatures will be higher than the average daytime | :08:47. | :08:50.
temperature for December, so to begin it is great and damp but it | :08:51. | :08:55.
may improve as the morning goes on and a lot of the day will become dry | :08:56. | :09:00.
as the rain peters out. A little brightness through the afternoon, | :09:01. | :09:04.
for Scotland it looks like staying misty and great, light rain never | :09:05. | :09:10.
our way, likewise for Northern Paignton, further south more dry | :09:11. | :09:15.
weather but lots of cloud and there will be off across the south coast | :09:16. | :09:19.
of Ireland and south-west England but temperatures could get into the | :09:20. | :09:22.
mid-teens across Southern counties of England. We are looking at a | :09:23. | :09:28.
warmer day tomorrow, not as breezy as today. There will be some rain on | :09:29. | :09:33.
Wednesday night which will linger into Thursday morning, as that moves | :09:34. | :09:38.
away a lot of cloud but pockets of rain and drizzle and temperatures in | :09:39. | :09:43.
the low teens. It looks like it will be wet on Friday and Saturday but | :09:44. | :09:48.
temperatures could approach the mid-teens, especially on Saturday as | :09:49. | :09:53.
it starts to dry up. Have a good night. | :09:54. | :09:54.
Our next BBC Newsline is at 6:25am during Breakfast here on BBC One. | :09:55. | :10:10.
