The appeal hearing in the so-called gay cake case is stalled after a | :00:14. | :00:27.
dramatic intervention from the Attorney General. | :00:28. | :00:30.

for any EU referendum to be deferred. | :00:34. | :00:34.
I'm in Dublin where the campaign for election 2016 has begun. | :00:35. | :00:40.

The student accommodation block planned for south Belfast that | :00:48. | :00:51.

You will have a development that will be 24 hours, coming and going, | :00:59. | :01:06.
increased noise, students running around the place and it is not in | :01:07. | :01:07.
common with the area. Dubai Desert title - | :01:08. | :01:09.
Rory McIlroy tells BBC Newline "this And rising temperatures | :01:10. | :01:13.
through the next 24 hours but turning cloudy | :01:14. | :01:16.
and damp at times. There's been another twist | :01:17. | :01:23.
in the legal battle involving Ashers Just as an appeal hearing | :01:24. | :01:29.
was about to get under way, the Attorney General intervened | :01:30. | :01:34.
and the case is to be put on hold In the meantime, the Attorney | :01:35. | :01:37.
General's concerns about the case BBC Newsline's Mark | :01:38. | :01:44.
Simpson was in court. Arriving back at court today for | :01:45. | :01:55.
another legal battle. The Bakers and the man whose cake they refused to | :01:56. | :02:01.
make. Ashers does not discriminate. We took issue with the message on | :02:02. | :02:06.
the cake and not the customer. This was the cake in question. A court | :02:07. | :02:11.
ruled that the Bakers should have agreed to bake it and by doing so | :02:12. | :02:16.
they discriminated against customer Gareth Lee. All were set for the | :02:17. | :02:22.
appeal hearing when a solicitor for the Attorney General intervened, and | :02:23. | :02:25.
questioned the legal basis of the original judgment. A spokesperson | :02:26. | :02:29.
for the Attorney General later explained... | :02:30. | :02:39.
But why only intervene at the last minute? The Attorney General pointed | :02:40. | :02:46.
out that in March last year at the start of the original court case, he | :02:47. | :02:51.
raised the issue. Two days ago he raised it again, this time in a | :02:52. | :02:56.
letter. And then today's intervention in court. It meant the | :02:57. | :03:00.
long-awaited appeal hearing scheduled for the next two days had | :03:01. | :03:05.
to be called off. The disappointment is there is an individual involved, | :03:06. | :03:10.
this is Gareth. It will be a number of months before it is presented and | :03:11. | :03:15.
he has to go through this again. We hope to present the case again | :03:16. | :03:19.
today. There is one thing both sides agree on. It is an extremely | :03:20. | :03:25.
complicated case. At one point, one of the lawyers said he was dipping | :03:26. | :03:29.
into these difficult legal waters with some trepidation. The Lord | :03:30. | :03:35.
Chief Justice told him not to worry, he said, we all have life jackets | :03:36. | :03:39.
on. The case now focuses on two hearings adopt one. The first will | :03:40. | :03:46.
be next month when the Attorney General's concerns are addressed and | :03:47. | :03:51.
then a full appeal hearing is scheduled for May, almost exactly | :03:52. | :03:54.
two years after this controversy over a cake first began. | :03:55. | :03:57.
The Ashers case has been attracting media coverage | :03:58. | :03:59.
One of those in court this morning was legal affairs expert Joshua | :04:00. | :04:05.
He said he was surprised by the turn of events. | :04:06. | :04:10.
I did not know, when I walked into court this morning, that suddenly a | :04:11. | :04:18.
solicitor for the Attorney General was to pop up in front of court, | :04:19. | :04:24.
dressed as a solicitor, not wearing robes, and would throw a spanner in | :04:25. | :04:29.
the works. That is unusual and rather interesting. Frustrating | :04:30. | :04:32.
because we came here to hear the arguments. I can see good arguments | :04:33. | :04:39.
on both sides, I can understand the concerns of the gay man who feels he | :04:40. | :04:45.
was discriminated against. I can understand the concerns of the | :04:46. | :04:49.
family who believe they were being asked to do something contrary to | :04:50. | :04:52.
their faith. I wanted to know how the judges would resolve that | :04:53. | :05:01.
dilemma. Fascinating to see these two in conflict. I still do not know | :05:02. | :05:04.
and it will be longer until we find out. | :05:05. | :05:05.
A poll on the UK's place in Europe should be delayed - | :05:06. | :05:08.
that's according to the First and Deputy First Ministers. | :05:09. | :05:10.
Along with their counterparts in Scotland and Wales they've | :05:11. | :05:12.
written to the Prime Minister asking for the referendum to be | :05:13. | :05:15.
But David Cameron, who says he'll visit Northern Ireland before | :05:16. | :05:20.
Arlene Foster says the deal obtained by Mr Cameron on the terms | :05:21. | :05:24.
of Britain's membership is disappointing. | :05:25. | :05:26.
Here's our political correspondent Gareth Gordon. | :05:27. | :05:35.
Cutting ribbons is easy. Cutting Britain's ties with the EU more | :05:36. | :05:45.
difficult. But Arlene Foster, opening a football pitch today, does | :05:46. | :05:49.
not believe David Cameron's renegotiation of the terms of | :05:50. | :05:53.
membership is a game changer. We want to give the Prime Minister his | :05:54. | :05:57.
place and wait until he comes forward until he says this is a deal | :05:58. | :06:02.
and then we can make the final determination. Given where we are | :06:03. | :06:07.
today, it looks as if we will be on the coming out of Europe side. That | :06:08. | :06:11.
view is not shared by the Sinn Fein Deputy First Minister. But they do | :06:12. | :06:17.
agree that June is the wrong time for a referendum, claiming it is too | :06:18. | :06:22.
close to assembly elections. We have co-signed a letter with the First | :06:23. | :06:27.
Minister of Scotland and Wales, to David Cameron, outlining the | :06:28. | :06:32.
objection to the referendum being held in June. That effectively | :06:33. | :06:39.
collates with the running of assembly elections here and the | :06:40. | :06:43.
Scottish and Welsh elections. From our perspective, there is the issue | :06:44. | :06:49.
of the timing of the referendum, and we are totally opposed, from Sinn | :06:50. | :06:58.
Fein's perspective, we are opposed to any withdrawal from Europe. The | :06:59. | :07:01.
timing of the referendum is something else. On the 6th of May, | :07:02. | :07:07.
people in Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales, take part in devolved | :07:08. | :07:12.
elections. Mr Cameron is believed to favour the 23rd of June and he is | :07:13. | :07:19.
not for turning. I respect the electorates of Scotland, Wales and | :07:20. | :07:24.
Northern Ireland. On the basis that people are capable of making up | :07:25. | :07:29.
their mind in a Scottish election, Welsh election, and then making up | :07:30. | :07:34.
their mind all over again on the vital question of the EU. It seems | :07:35. | :07:40.
June is the likely referendum date. David Cameron has promised to visit | :07:41. | :07:44.
Northern Ireland beforehand to make the case for Britain remaining in | :07:45. | :07:55.
the EU. A leading academic said the UK exit from the EU would not have | :07:56. | :08:01.
much effect on the economy. The Economist, a former adviser to David | :08:02. | :08:04.
Trimble, gave evidence to a Westminster committee. He is saying | :08:05. | :08:11.
that the Brexit debate is nothing to get excited about. Graham Gudgin | :08:12. | :08:22.
says the numbers are not exciting, some studies saying it would cause | :08:23. | :08:26.
the economy to grow a little bit and some saying it would shrink a little | :08:27. | :08:30.
bit. And if you look at Northern Ireland, he said the effect would be | :08:31. | :08:34.
the same and if there was Brexit, we could cope. He picked up on comments | :08:35. | :08:40.
made by Enda Kenny when talking about the potential downsides. | :08:41. | :08:44.
Brexit will not have much effect on the Northern Ireland economy, it is | :08:45. | :08:47.
hard to see it would have much effect on the peace process. I found | :08:48. | :08:54.
Enda Kenny's comments on this rather scurrilous. Is there consensus? Not | :08:55. | :09:00.
everybody shares his opinion and the Financial Times newspaper polled 100 | :09:01. | :09:04.
UK economists this year and the majority said if we were to leave | :09:05. | :09:09.
the EU, it would have a negative impact on the UK economy. Another | :09:10. | :09:14.
thing we kept coming back to in Westminster today was the idea of | :09:15. | :09:19.
uncertainty. Nobody knows what the impact will be. One uncertainty is | :09:20. | :09:25.
on farm subsidies. Another columnist, he said those subsidies | :09:26. | :09:29.
would have to be replaced and the big question is, what would come in | :09:30. | :09:34.
their place? It would be devastating for the Northern Ireland farming | :09:35. | :09:38.
industry were it up to be replaced in some form. There are those who | :09:39. | :09:42.
would argue there are changes needed to farm structures and sizes | :09:43. | :09:47.
required in Northern Ireland, but the support is so significant that | :09:48. | :09:53.
that transition if not replace would be hugely damaging to Northern | :09:54. | :09:56.
Ireland. What other risks were flagged up? Lee Gibson looked at | :09:57. | :10:02.
corporation tax. We know at the moment in Northern Ireland it will | :10:03. | :10:08.
be cut from 2018. Lee Gibson said, companies might save, we like the | :10:09. | :10:14.
corporation tax cut, but there is so much uncertainty around Brexit, what | :10:15. | :10:19.
will Northern Ireland's trading relationships be like for the rest | :10:20. | :10:23.
of the world? We might wait and not invest, which he said could blunt | :10:24. | :10:29.
that tax cut. What we have to come back to uncertainty. Nobody knows | :10:30. | :10:32.
the economic impact if we were to leave. | :10:33. | :10:34.
The Republic is to hold a General Election on the 26th of | :10:35. | :10:37.
The Taoiseach Enda Kenny announced the date this morning. | :10:38. | :10:40.
The Irish President has now dissolved the Dail - | :10:41. | :10:42.
our Dublin correspondent Shane Harrison is there. | :10:43. | :10:51.
It is official, what was the worst kept secret in Irish politics, that | :10:52. | :10:57.
the people of the Republic will go to the polls on the last Friday of | :10:58. | :11:05.
this month. Before the starting gun in election 2016 was fired. The area | :11:06. | :11:11.
that once returned Unionist MPs is one of the 40 constituencies where | :11:12. | :11:16.
the parties will try to rally their supporters and to appeal to the | :11:17. | :11:20.
floating voters. Some of those seeking election already had posters | :11:21. | :11:24.
up. This morning, the Taoiseach went to the Dail to announce he would | :11:25. | :11:30.
seek a dissolution of the 31st Dail. We shall inform the house is a | :11:31. | :11:36.
matter of courtesy that I am proceeding immediately, to advise | :11:37. | :11:43.
the President to dissolve and some of the incoming Dail to meet at | :11:44. | :11:47.
10:30am on Thursday, the 10th of March, 2016. A show of unity from | :11:48. | :11:53.
the Taoiseach. Both leaders before Enda Kenny went to where President | :11:54. | :12:00.
Higgins formally signed away the outgoing Dail. With polling day | :12:01. | :12:07.
fabric the 26th, the next three weeks of campaigning will probably | :12:08. | :12:10.
be dominated by one issue, the economy. But on the streets of | :12:11. | :12:17.
Dublin, it seems some of the electorate and some of their | :12:18. | :12:20.
politicians are not exactly in tune with each other. I don't know what | :12:21. | :12:28.
to do. If I vote independent you kind of lose a vote, if you know | :12:29. | :12:32.
what I mean. What am I going to do? Who are you going to call? | :12:33. | :12:38.
Ghostbusters. I vote for the left-wing parties who are | :12:39. | :12:44.
progressing more and they have proper and good ideas, stable ideas | :12:45. | :12:49.
that will work. The government have done a good job in making us the | :12:50. | :12:53.
fastest-growing country in Europe. I think stability is best. I will be | :12:54. | :13:00.
sticking with stability. It is go mode for the parties. Posters are | :13:01. | :13:05.
going up, campaigns beginning and the manifestos will shortly follow | :13:06. | :13:08.
in this very short three-week campaign. You heard a young woman | :13:09. | :13:16.
use the word stability, which is the key message. Fina | :13:17. | :13:31.
Fer left-wing parties not everybody is gaining from the recovery and | :13:32. | :13:37.
they counter argue that a vote for them is a vote for fairness. | :13:38. | :13:40.
The County Down village with plans to become a no-go area for lorries. | :13:41. | :13:50.
A man in his 40s has died following a collision | :13:51. | :13:54.
It happened on the New Road at the junction with | :13:55. | :14:01.
The incident was reported to police shortly after twenty to six. | :14:02. | :14:06.
The man attacked in Newcastle last night is in a stable | :14:07. | :14:11.
The victim, who is in his forties, was stabbed five times outside | :14:12. | :14:17.
a supermarket on the Castlewellan Road at around half past seven. | :14:18. | :14:20.
The Sinn Fein MLA Phil Flanagan has been ordered to pay almost ?50,000 | :14:21. | :14:29.
in damages to the Ulster Unionist MP Tom Elliot | :14:30. | :14:32.
over a defamatory message posted on Twitter. | :14:33. | :14:35.
It's still not clear if taxpayer-funded insurance used | :14:36. | :14:40.
by Stormont Assembly members will ultimately end up | :14:41. | :14:42.
Almost two years ago Phil Flanagan said this after hearing Tom Elliott | :14:43. | :14:56.
on BBC Radio Ulster. Mr Elliott launched libel proceedings against | :14:57. | :15:01.
the Sinn Fein MLA. Last month an agreed statement was read out in | :15:02. | :15:06.
court in which Phil Flanagan apologised for offence caused, I | :15:07. | :15:10.
accepted his tweet was untrue and without foundation. It ended with Mr | :15:11. | :15:16.
Elliott declaring himself vindicated and his reputation restored. | :15:17. | :15:20.
Awarding over ?47,000 in compensation, the judge said... | :15:21. | :15:31.
Any pay-out has effectively been frozen until Phil Flanagan resolves | :15:32. | :15:41.
his legal action against insurers used by the assembly. That insurance | :15:42. | :15:47.
company has refused to cover him for compensation or costs in this case. | :15:48. | :15:53.
A primary school in Antrim has had to close following a break | :15:54. | :15:56.
in where thousands of pounds of computer equipment was stolen. | :15:57. | :15:58.
It happened at St Joseph's on Greystone Road some time | :15:59. | :16:01.
between midnight and two o'clock in the morning. | :16:02. | :16:03.
About 50 iPads and 30 laptops were stolen. | :16:04. | :16:08.
The school was shut so that police officers could search | :16:09. | :16:10.
Parents of pupils have offered to help with the clean-up | :16:11. | :16:15.
and the school is due to reopen tomorrow. | :16:16. | :16:20.
I don't know why they would target children. Their education is so | :16:21. | :16:29.
important, and we work so hard, particularly in this climate of | :16:30. | :16:34.
uncertainty in finance, to provide opportunities for children. They | :16:35. | :16:35.
should be ashamed of themselves. Plans for an eight-storey student | :16:36. | :16:37.
accommodation block near Belfast city centre have been met | :16:38. | :16:39.
with opposition by residents who have called it | :16:40. | :16:42.
a "high-rise Holyland". Today the developers have been | :16:43. | :16:43.
publicly defending their plans Shaftsbury Square is the gateway | :16:44. | :16:45.
to south Belfast and a popular place Developers want to build an eight | :16:46. | :16:52.
story student accommodation block But residents say | :16:53. | :16:58.
they don't want it. You will have a development which | :16:59. | :17:11.
will potentially be 24 hours coming and going, increased noise, students | :17:12. | :17:15.
running about the place. It is not in common with the area. | :17:16. | :17:18.
Locals say they fear it could attract scenes like these | :17:19. | :17:20.
and increase community tensions if students from the nearby Holyland | :17:21. | :17:23.
They call it the new Holyland in the sky. There is no sense in hedging | :17:24. | :17:44.
this. They will come down, going down to City Hall. If the students | :17:45. | :17:53.
come down, what are these fellas going to do down here? You are in | :17:54. | :18:00.
between two loyalist areas. And the students in the middle. | :18:01. | :18:02.
In their first public interview the developers have defended | :18:03. | :18:04.
It is not a flash point area, it is a city centre site, a ?7 million | :18:05. | :18:16.
regeneration scheme, a main arterial route into the city centre and we | :18:17. | :18:21.
think it will improve development. The planning application is expected | :18:22. | :18:26.
to go before Belfast City Council in a fortnight. Given recent approval | :18:27. | :18:31.
for student blocks elsewhere in the city, councillors could be | :18:32. | :18:33.
discussing just how many more developments like this the city can | :18:34. | :18:35.
absorb. A High Court bid to stop | :18:36. | :18:39.
the amalgamation of two grammar A student at Collegiate Grammar had | :18:40. | :18:42.
challenged plans to merge her school with Portora Royal to form | :18:43. | :18:47.
Enniskillen Royal Grammar School. Mr Justice Colton said that | :18:48. | :18:52.
an initial split site arrangement should not be permanent, | :18:53. | :18:56.
and that it would be "nothing short of a scandal" if a new | :18:57. | :18:58.
school was not built. The County Antrim firm Wrightbus | :18:59. | :19:03.
is set for another order for London buses worth in the region | :19:04. | :19:06.
of sixty million pounds. London Mayor Boris Johnson has been | :19:07. | :19:10.
given financial approval to buy 195 of the Routemaster double-deckers | :19:11. | :19:14.
before he steps down. The buses will be the last under | :19:15. | :19:17.
a contract Wrightbus won in 2009. There are plans to limit the number | :19:18. | :19:25.
of heavy goods vehicles driving It's partly because of the concerns | :19:26. | :19:28.
of local people, partly because it's But haulage companies are worried | :19:29. | :19:33.
this could lead to growing numbers Many lorries go though | :19:34. | :19:37.
Hillsborough each day - The new limit suggested | :19:38. | :19:46.
by the Department of Regional Development is for HGVs | :19:47. | :19:51.
over 7.5 tonnes. This resident agrees | :19:52. | :19:56.
with Transport NI - that most of the through | :19:57. | :19:58.
journeys needn't happen. We get a large number of big | :19:59. | :20:07.
commercial lorries coming through the village, which do not have to | :20:08. | :20:12.
come through the village. There is a thing called the Hillsborough | :20:13. | :20:15.
bypass, but they use the village to bypass the bypass and every time a | :20:16. | :20:20.
large lorry goes past, our houses shake. We have people whose windows | :20:21. | :20:24.
break, plaster falls off walls and it wakes us up. | :20:25. | :20:29.
Some haulage companies have already changed their routes - | :20:30. | :20:31.
There is not a problem with Hillsborough as most hauliers do not | :20:32. | :20:40.
need to go through Hillsborough, my concern is the idea would spread to | :20:41. | :20:44.
other villages and towns. A knee jerk reaction. And towns you need to | :20:45. | :20:51.
go through you won't be able to. Sometimes you are put on devotions | :20:52. | :20:56.
and end up in an area or you have two deliver in the town itself and | :20:57. | :20:57.

It was nice to have a quieter day after the storm. We had a chilly | :27:06. | :27:10.

afternoon, but generally it will be drier. We are left with the legacy | :28:30. | :28:33.
of low cloud and missed. But a milder day. Tomorrow night, a mild | :28:34. | :28:41.

slowly. Looking at wet and windy spells on Friday with heavy bursts | :28:55. | :28:59.
