The sight of hundreds of people on the streets of west Belfast last

:00:00.:00:08.

night underlined the fear pensioners say they feel after a number

:00:09.:00:12.

One woman who suffered a broken wrist in an attack is still too

:00:13.:00:18.

And today the Police reacted to criticism of their response

:00:19.:00:23.

It is a weekly lunch club in Saint Peter's Parish Hall.

:00:24.:00:31.

A serious matter is under discussion.

:00:32.:00:37.

The safety officers from the City Council giving advice

:00:38.:00:41.

It is all because of two violent muggings of senior citizens

:00:42.:00:47.

and several house burglaries in recent weeks.

:00:48.:00:59.

In the first incident, 78-year-old Florence suffered

:01:00.:01:01.

She was pushed to the ground cheering a mugging.

:01:02.:01:04.

Her best friends say she cannot talk about what happened without crying.

:01:05.:01:06.

She is scared to go out unless somebody is with her,

:01:07.:01:09.

Just last Friday, 76-year-old Maureen Shepherd

:01:10.:01:17.

was left with the broken jaw after being attacked

:01:18.:01:22.

The two incidents have left pensioners feeling vulnerable.

:01:23.:01:30.

Our neighbours have all agreed that if we going anywhere,

:01:31.:01:34.

one will keep an eye on the house and we will have each other's phone

:01:35.:01:37.

numbers just in case of an emergency.

:01:38.:01:40.

Last night several hundred people attended a rally

:01:41.:01:42.

to show their support for victims of crime.

:01:43.:01:45.

And while people are undoubtedly worried, the police say

:01:46.:01:47.

it is important to keep the incidents in perspective.

:01:48.:01:56.

What we want to do is reassure the community that both those

:01:57.:01:58.

incidents are under investigation those investigations remain alive

:01:59.:02:05.

and we are taking them very seriously.

:02:06.:02:06.

But they are only a small number of incidents, not in any way

:02:07.:02:09.

to downplay their seriousness, but we don't greater fear

:02:10.:02:17.

Back in Saint Peter's, and it's a full house for the bingo.

:02:18.:02:22.

A determination in the face of fear to live life as normal.

:02:23.:02:27.

Volunteers have mounted a mercy mission to save horses stranded

:02:28.:02:29.

They brought hay and feed to the animals stuck on an island

:02:30.:02:35.

This report by our agriculture and environment correspondent

:02:36.:02:43.

Conor Macauley contains some images which you may find upsetting.

:02:44.:02:49.

The distress call had come in after locals became aware

:02:50.:02:57.

of the stranded horses, laden down with hay and feed,

:02:58.:02:59.

volunteers from the community rescue service that off on a mercy mission

:03:00.:03:02.

It is a wide and shallow lake with lots of little Islands.

:03:03.:03:10.

It took us a while to locate the one we wanted.

:03:11.:03:13.

There were 13 horses there, three of them were dead,

:03:14.:03:15.

lying out in the open under heavy plastic.

:03:16.:03:20.

The ground was cut to ribbons and there was no grazing.

:03:21.:03:23.

The conditions are not ideal, the horses are friendly enough

:03:24.:03:26.

and approachable enough, but they're certainly not starving.

:03:27.:03:29.

They definitely need to be moved on soon as possible.

:03:30.:03:32.

They need shifting to a better location, somewhere where there

:03:33.:03:35.

First examination, the horses do not seem to be in to buy

:03:36.:03:41.

The ground on which they were marooned is in a shocking state.

:03:42.:03:48.

We do not know who owns these horses and we're not sure how

:03:49.:03:51.

One theory is that they may have forded across a causeway

:03:52.:03:57.

at low water in the autumn.

:03:58.:04:02.

By the time they had grazed the island down,

:04:03.:04:07.

the winter floods had raised the levels, marooning them.

:04:08.:04:09.

We would hope that someone will come out and do something a bit more

:04:10.:04:13.

substantial, I know the water has cut everything off here and it has

:04:14.:04:16.

certainly created a dilemma for the owner of the horses as well.

:04:17.:04:21.

Some hay had been left before we arrived, but these animals

:04:22.:04:24.

need moving to dry ground if they are not

:04:25.:04:26.

The welfare of horses in all the responsibility

:04:27.:04:29.

of councils, in this case, the Mid Ulster Council.

:04:30.:04:31.

receive the conflict and worth investigating kits.

:04:32.:04:35.

An investigation's underway into how a train collided with construction

:04:36.:04:42.

equipment on the line between Lisburn and Portadown this morning.

:04:43.:04:46.

The railway line has been closed all day.

:04:47.:04:55.

They say they hope the service will be running as normal in the morning.

:04:56.:05:03.

This is the spot just outside Lisburn, where the 625 Belfast

:05:04.:05:05.

to Portadown train hit a large piece of excavation machinery

:05:06.:05:08.

After hitting the machinery, the train then travelled around

:05:09.:05:12.

250 metres to where it came to a stop, right here.

:05:13.:05:17.

Then, the driver, conductor and seven passengers on board had

:05:18.:05:19.

to make their way off the train in the dark and walk around

:05:20.:05:22.

the kilometres to the next level crossing.

:05:23.:05:27.

Shattered windows, shocked and shaken passengers and staff,

:05:28.:05:29.

Thankfully it stayed on the tracks and we are looking at something less

:05:30.:05:50.

Health and Safety Executive, Translink and the PSNI

:05:51.:05:53.

are all involved in trying to find exactly how and why such a large

:05:54.:05:56.

piece of equipment ended up on the tracks.

:05:57.:06:07.

It appears it was a bucket of a digger on the line,

:06:08.:06:09.

the train struck at at around 6:55am.

:06:10.:06:11.

We are not clear how it arrived on the line and it

:06:12.:06:14.

And because of that ongoing investigation, the line

:06:15.:06:17.

between Lisburn and Portadown will remain closed.

:06:18.:06:30.

Almost ?1 million of public money is needed to repair a landmark art

:06:31.:06:35.

building which opened less than four years ago. The figure was revealed

:06:36.:06:43.

in a letter to MLAs that were also told a small part of the roof of

:06:44.:06:49.

three in Belfast had fallen off at the weekend.

:06:50.:06:53.

It is an award-winning building but little can currently be seen of it

:06:54.:06:58.

and repairing the damage to three will come at a cost. A letter said

:06:59.:07:00.

that... They were told this was because

:07:01.:07:14.

pursuing liability for the work is likely to be lengthy. Many MLAs are

:07:15.:07:21.

not happy. Another ?1 million of public money is going to be spilt on

:07:22.:07:24.

what is a new building that has turned out to be not fit for

:07:25.:07:32.

purpose. I absolutely and totally against forking out money, nearly ?1

:07:33.:07:37.

million, for something that they had literally no fault in. The letter

:07:38.:07:42.

also said that an aluminium panel was dislodged from the roof and

:07:43.:07:48.

blown into Sid and Square during high winds last Friday. One question

:07:49.:07:51.

is why do we have to pay this million pounds. If it wasn't urgent,

:07:52.:07:59.

we could pay it now, but the big winds last week and you have to be

:08:00.:08:02.

sure of this building is safe and that is our paramount concern. No

:08:03.:08:08.

one from three was available for interview this afternoon but in a

:08:09.:08:11.

statement they said they would find a full and final solution to the

:08:12.:08:15.

problem and remain open for business as usual.

:08:16.:08:16.

A former Chief Constable has called on politicians to find a way

:08:17.:08:19.

of breaking the deadlock on dealing with the past.

:08:20.:08:22.

In an interview on the political programme The View Sir Hugh Orde

:08:23.:08:25.

said it was time to revisit the proposals made by

:08:26.:08:27.

And he said Politicians must demonstrate collective leadership.

:08:28.:08:37.

Politicians from all sides who represent all the communities need

:08:38.:08:43.

to sit on the table and come up with a solution. It is certainly not

:08:44.:08:46.

going to happen without clear of joined up political leadership.

:08:47.:08:48.

And you can see more on that story on The View on BBC one

:08:49.:08:51.

The First Minister says she supports Shankill bomb victims

:08:52.:08:54.

in their search for the truth after an allegation the RUC had

:08:55.:08:57.

Arlene Foster said she would back the families in their quest to get

:08:58.:09:03.

the Police Ombudsman to carry out an inquiry.

:09:04.:09:07.

Of course I have been and continue to be a long-term supporter

:09:08.:09:09.

of the RUC and the police service of Northern Ireland,

:09:10.:09:12.

that doesn't take away from the fact there were a few bad apples around

:09:13.:09:15.

Therefore we need to get to the truth of this.

:09:16.:09:20.

I hear what the Chief Constable has to say in relation to

:09:21.:09:23.

the allegation, but when you listen to the families and how they have

:09:24.:09:31.

been traumatised, we have to give them

:09:32.:09:33.

beyond a reasonable doubt the certainty that did not happen.

:09:34.:09:35.

If it did, we need to find out that as well.

:09:36.:09:38.

Legendary local musician Van Morrison was knighted

:09:39.:09:39.

by the Prince of Wales in a ceremony at Buckingham Palace

:09:40.:09:42.

The 70-year-old was recognised for his services to the music

:09:43.:09:45.

industry and tourism in Northern Ireland.

:09:46.:09:48.

He described the honour as exhilarating.

:09:49.:09:49.

To receive the honour of knighthood, Sir Ivan Morrison, for services to

:09:50.:10:11.

the music industry and tourism in Northern Ireland. He will not have

:10:12.:10:16.

had many days like this. During the five decades in between he has

:10:17.:10:20.

filled music fans and sold millions of records but despite his fame he

:10:21.:10:25.

has often shied away from interviews. Today he made an

:10:26.:10:32.

exception. It was very different for me, quite exciting and exhilarating.

:10:33.:10:39.

You must have read my mind because I am working on new staff and I said I

:10:40.:10:47.

would keep performing and I said I will keep performing while I can!

:10:48.:10:53.

Has knighthood was announced in the Queen's birthday honours last year

:10:54.:10:57.

just a few months before he celebrated his 70th birthday with a

:10:58.:11:02.

concert on Cyprus Avenue. It not only recognises his music but his

:11:03.:11:05.

positive promotion of Northern Ireland. His album released in 1980

:11:06.:11:18.

was called Common One, but 35 years later he is a night of the realm.

:11:19.:11:23.

It's been a tough few months for Ballymena with the news

:11:24.:11:26.

of Gallaghers and Michelin shutting down.

:11:27.:11:30.

Tomorrow's Good Morning Ulster will be looking ahead to a rally

:11:31.:11:33.

being held to support local traders and backed by none other

:11:34.:11:35.

than the town's most famous son Liam Neeson.

:11:36.:11:43.

And now just time for the weather prospects with Geoff Maskell.

:11:44.:11:51.

It's been a pretty grey and dumped me today and overnight we hold onto

:11:52.:11:57.

that cloud cover and we get strengthening winds ahead of this

:11:58.:12:00.

weather front that comes in the wee small hours. That front sets the

:12:01.:12:05.

tone for Fraley's weather and just about everyone is going to be waking

:12:06.:12:10.

up to some rain on Friday morning. The cold front is moving its way

:12:11.:12:14.

slowly east and then through thick gets a little bit stalled, so the

:12:15.:12:17.

rain could take a good while to clear out. Taking the wider view, we

:12:18.:12:22.

have stronger winds in front of the weather front and then the rain with

:12:23.:12:27.

the weather warning in place across south-east Scotland and North East

:12:28.:12:32.

England. Behind the front we have clear out and cooler conditions so

:12:33.:12:35.

we do get a slot of brighter weather to end the day on Friday, clear

:12:36.:12:39.

skies meaning that overnight the temperature will drop away. Economic

:12:40.:12:45.

to come than it will be tonight, the temperature down to around two

:12:46.:12:49.

Celsius before the next band of rain starts to work its way in for the

:12:50.:12:53.

beginning of the weekend. Saturday I am a flavour will be a bit of a damp

:12:54.:12:57.

and personally a free with babies kicking up as we go through the day,

:12:58.:13:02.

so really not the nicest day and if you're looking for an opportunity to

:13:03.:13:06.

get out and about, Sunday is looking like the best day of the weekend and

:13:07.:13:12.

it should be dry and bright and I am afraid it is certainly not going to

:13:13.:13:14.

be any warmer. Our next BBC Newsline is at 6:25
