An anti-abortion group has described as "very lenient" the three month | :00:08. | :00:12.
suspended sentence given to a young woman who bought | :00:13. | :00:16.
drugs on the internet to induce a miscarriage. | :00:17. | :00:19.
Precious Life wants the case to be brought before the Appeal Court. | :00:20. | :00:23.
The BBC understands, for that to happen, a decision has | :00:24. | :00:26.
to be made by the Director of Public Prosecutions. | :00:27. | :00:30.
Our health correspondent Marie Louise Connolly has more. | :00:31. | :00:37.
Yesterday's Crown Court judgment is significant as it was the first | :00:38. | :00:39.
time in Northern Ireland that a person was convicted | :00:40. | :00:41.
for purchasing drugs online to terminate a pregnancy. | :00:42. | :00:46.
The judge had the power to imprison the woman | :00:47. | :00:51.
But the case did reach court, where the story emerged | :00:52. | :01:02.
of a 19-year-old woman who'd bought drugs over the internet | :01:03. | :01:05.
as she couldn't afford to travel to England for an abortion. | :01:06. | :01:08.
The court heard how she induced her own miscarriage in July 2014 | :01:09. | :01:13.
when she was between 10 and 12 weeks pregnant. | :01:14. | :01:17.
For some, the suspended sentence was too light. | :01:18. | :01:20.
I believe if a crime is committed, the judge must | :01:21. | :01:22.
I don't believe he has, and in cases where an illegal | :01:23. | :01:29.
abortion has taken place, even in other parts of the UK, | :01:30. | :01:33.
women have been prosecuted and if that means a prison | :01:34. | :01:36.
The case raises many issues, including how the law differs | :01:37. | :01:44.
opportunities and travel to some countries would be prohibited | :01:45. | :01:55.
with having a conviction on her record. | :01:56. | :01:58.
While this woman is the first to be convicted, she's certainly not | :01:59. | :02:01.
the first to import abortion pills into Northern Ireland. | :02:02. | :02:04.
In fact, over 200 women here say they want to be arrested | :02:05. | :02:08.
after signing a letter to the Government in | :02:09. | :02:11.
which they admit to having used or purchased illegal abortion pills. | :02:12. | :02:18.
after isolated woman like that | :02:19. | :02:27.
get access to these pills, so it is like they are | :02:28. | :02:30.
According to Amnesty International, the woman is now a convicted | :02:31. | :02:35.
It seems right based on yesterday's judgment that it is a criminal | :02:36. | :02:41.
offence to be a woman in Northern Ireland. | :02:42. | :02:44.
would not be prosecuted, a woman with the money to travel to | :02:45. | :02:49.
The drugs imported by the woman are similar to those used by hospitals | :02:50. | :02:54.
According to Precious Life, others are also guilty of a crime. | :02:55. | :02:59.
I am greatly concerned she sought advice from the wrong people, | :03:00. | :03:03.
she contacted an abortion centre in the UK who advised her how | :03:04. | :03:08.
I'm concerned that women in Northern Ireland are not being | :03:09. | :03:19.
informed and given the information to help them | :03:20. | :03:21.
The Public Prosecution Service has insisted it was in the public | :03:22. | :03:25.
interest to bring a case against a woman found guilty | :03:26. | :03:28.
of buying drugs online to abort her unborn child. | :03:29. | :03:35.
An elderly man has told the Historical Institutional Abuse | :03:36. | :03:39.
Inquiry that he has suffered form an eating disorder all of his life | :03:40. | :03:43.
because of his treatment at Lissue Hospital near Lisburn. | :03:44. | :03:47.
He claims he was hit on the head with a spoon while living there | :03:48. | :03:50.
when he was just two years old. | :03:51. | :03:52.
The toddler celebrated his second birthday in Lissue. | :03:53. | :04:01.
Until today, decades later and in a different century, | :04:02. | :04:07.
he hadn't revealed publically what happened to him. | :04:08. | :04:11.
The testimony heard today was not different from other evidence heard | :04:12. | :04:15.
at this inquiry in the past two years. | :04:16. | :04:18.
It was about the abuse of a toddler | :04:19. | :04:21.
and today the man, now in his 60s, came to the inquiry | :04:22. | :04:25.
to say how he felt cold and always afraid | :04:26. | :04:29.
He described how a nurse used a soup spoon to hit him on the forehead | :04:30. | :04:37.
and chin in an effort to to get him to eat food. | :04:38. | :04:39.
The pensioner told the Inquiry that he's suffered from an eating | :04:40. | :04:42.
disorder all his life as a result of the alleged abuse. | :04:43. | :04:46.
Another witness recalled another era at Lissue - the 1970s. | :04:47. | :04:51.
The woman, now in her 40s, said she was a five-year-old | :04:52. | :04:53.
She described staff at the hosptial as "very physical and rough". | :04:54. | :05:02.
The woman told the inquiry there were some difficult children in care | :05:03. | :05:05.
at Lissue but she said there was no need for a staff to be treating | :05:06. | :05:09.
children around by their hair with their arms | :05:10. | :05:14.
A man is still being questioned in connection with the murder | :05:15. | :05:23.
31-year-old Laura Marshall was found dead in a flat on Victoria Street | :05:24. | :05:29.
A new file containing evidence against the child killer | :05:30. | :05:40.
Robert Black about the murder of a 13-year-old girl in Devon has | :05:41. | :05:43.
Black, who died in Maghaberry prison in January, killed four young girls, | :05:44. | :05:47.
including Jennifer Cardy, who was abducted near her home | :05:48. | :05:49.
Devon and Cornwall Police say they want prosecutors to confirm | :05:50. | :05:53.
he should also have been charged with killing Genette Tate | :05:54. | :05:58.
Some teaching staff at the De La Salle College in west | :05:59. | :06:07.
Belfast have voted for industrial action up to and including | :06:08. | :06:10.
Most of the 70 teachers belong to the Irish National Teachers' | :06:11. | :06:13.
Organisation and just over half of its members at De La Salle | :06:14. | :06:17.
There have been ongoing problems at the post-primary school | :06:18. | :06:22.
A group of loyalists have protested to the police about an incident | :06:23. | :06:39.
on Easter Tuesday in which CS spray was used. | :06:40. | :06:42.
Around 50 of them went to a Belfast police station to speak | :06:43. | :06:45.
to a senior PSNI officer about their concerns. | :06:46. | :06:48.
The group included supporters of the South Belfast | :06:49. | :06:50.
Young Conquerers band, which was involved in the parade. | :06:51. | :06:55.
They say their demand for an officer who was involved to be | :06:56. | :06:57.
The police said a constructive discussion was held. | :06:58. | :07:18.
primary school in Londonderry is being treated | :07:19. | :07:23.
The blaze broke out last night at Holy Child Primary | :07:24. | :07:27.
It's believed that building materials - | :07:28. | :07:31.
which were being used to re-roof the block - were set alight. | :07:32. | :07:34.
A schoolgirl from Dungannon suffered severe hypothermia and lost | :07:35. | :07:36.
consciousness during a Duke of Edinburgh expedition | :07:37. | :07:38.
Several members of her group suffered mild hypothermia | :07:39. | :07:41.
after conditions deteriorated near Slieve Beg. | :07:42. | :07:44.
Coletta Smith spoke to some of those involved in the rescue. | :07:45. | :07:48.
It was about this time yesterday evening that a group of young people | :07:49. | :07:51.
from Dungannon got into trouble went up | :07:52. | :07:57.
the Mourne Mountains on a practice run | :07:58. | :08:02.
for their Gold Duke of Edinburgh award. | :08:03. | :08:04.
One of the girls from the Royal School Dungannon | :08:05. | :08:07.
They made the call to emergency services. | :08:08. | :08:16.
On the other end of that call were these | :08:17. | :08:18.
It was just after 7pm that you got that call. | :08:19. | :08:22.
It was about 7:30pm yesterday and we started to | :08:23. | :08:27.
make our way down to base to respond and get onto the hill. | :08:28. | :08:34.
But last night the young people did all the right things. | :08:35. | :08:36.
It was very impressive, the kids who were up | :08:37. | :08:39.
there had put up a tent when they realised their classmate was not | :08:40. | :08:43.
They got wrapped up and stayed with her and | :08:44. | :08:47.
organised themselves so we could find them easily, | :08:48. | :09:01.
so they deserve credit for doing a good job. | :09:02. | :09:03.
This girl was cold, she was going in and | :09:04. | :09:07.
out of consciousness, so her | :09:08. | :09:08.
skin was cold, it was hard to feel warmth around the girl, so that | :09:09. | :09:12.
would be the sort of thing we are seeing, so we have to get | :09:13. | :09:20.
new clothes and bring her body temperature gradually back up again. | :09:21. | :09:23.
Thankfully a happy ending to yesterday's story | :09:24. | :09:30.
and a relief not only for the young people but to the parents waiting | :09:31. | :09:33.
that these gentlemen were ready and waiting to go up the mountain. | :09:34. | :09:39.
Four Irish golfers are in the United States this week | :09:40. | :09:42.
preparing to take part in the Masters - Darren Clarke, | :09:43. | :09:45.
Graeme McDowell, Shane Lowry and the world number three Rory | :09:46. | :09:47.
Stephen Watson followed the Holywood man during | :09:48. | :09:51.
There is the only one the four major tournaments missing from his CV. The | :09:52. | :10:08.
Masters as the tournament Rory McIlroy would love to win. Victory | :10:09. | :10:13.
and his name will forever be etched on to the golfing record books. He | :10:14. | :10:21.
thinks is better prepared than ever. I am one year on from the hype that | :10:22. | :10:25.
surrounded me last year so I will hopefully be able to deal with that | :10:26. | :10:29.
letter. Having that experience, it will hopefully help me. Every year | :10:30. | :10:36.
that I do not win the green will hopefully help me. Every year | :10:37. | :10:39.
that will build and build so hopefully I will get that monkey off | :10:40. | :10:44.
my back. If you could slip on that famous | :10:45. | :10:50.
green jacket could you retire happy? Yes. If I were to only be the sixth | :10:51. | :11:03.
player ever to win the career Grand Slam, I would retire happily knowing | :11:04. | :11:08.
I was in illustrious company. He had a hole-in-one during | :11:09. | :11:15.
practice. If practice rounds are an indicator | :11:16. | :11:19.
of form, Rory McIlroy is shaping up well. He has played well and has | :11:20. | :11:24.
some luck on his side and that may be the perfect recipe for Mastro 's | :11:25. | :11:26.
success. -- Masters. In local football's Europa League, | :11:27. | :11:32.
Cliftonville came from behind Daniel Hughes scored in the 89th | :11:33. | :11:34.
minute to clinch the win. The result puts Cliftonville two | :11:35. | :11:38.
points behind Glenavon who drew 1-1 We did have a few showers | :11:39. | :11:40.
today but nothing like After tonight's rain, | :11:41. | :11:49.
we can expect the winds to pick up and there will be | :11:50. | :11:54.
a scattering of showers. As temperatures fall close | :11:55. | :11:56.
to freezing, we are likely to see a mixture of sleet and snow over | :11:57. | :11:58.
the hills and mountains. It will be a chilly | :11:59. | :12:02.
start to tomorrow. Very unsettled and | :12:03. | :12:05.
certainly feeling cold. We can expect scattering of showers | :12:06. | :12:08.
throughout the day. It will be piling in | :12:09. | :12:10.
on a north-westerly wind. Some of the showers could come | :12:11. | :12:12.
with hail and thunder. Scattered showers right | :12:13. | :12:19.
across Ireland and for many areas They will make their way eastwards | :12:20. | :12:25.
through the day, turning dry and bright across much | :12:26. | :12:34.
of England and Wales. Scotland and Ireland can expect | :12:35. | :12:41.
scattered showers to continue to come and go | :12:42. | :12:44.
and temperatures will We're probably looking and highs | :12:45. | :12:48.
of 7/8 degrees at best. But when you factor | :12:49. | :12:56.
in the strong winds There will be the odd | :12:57. | :12:57.
sunny gap in between but unfortunately they will be | :12:58. | :13:01.
short-lived. Wet will stay unsettled | :13:02. | :13:03.
as we go into Thursday. Not as bad as Wednesday but watch | :13:04. | :13:05.
out for some scattered showers. This shouldn't be as | :13:06. | :13:08.
heavy but still windy. Temperatures back up | :13:09. | :13:10.
in double figures. A look ahead to the rest | :13:11. | :13:11.
of the week. Low-pressure remaining in control | :13:12. | :13:13.
so it will stay unsettled. Stay tuned to the forecast. | :13:14. | :13:15.
Goodnight. | :13:16. | :13:20. |
