Good evening. That's

:00:00.:00:14.

A man appears in court in Londonderry,

:00:15.:00:20.

charged with the murder of civil servant Paul McCauley.

:00:21.:00:24.

This Lurgan woman's boyfriend denies killing her

:00:25.:00:26.

The Kincora Boys' Home scandal - a judge rules that a current inquiry

:00:27.:00:33.

into abuse is equipped to fully investigate allegations.

:00:34.:00:37.

The Fermanagh businessman Sean Quinn condemns attacks and threats

:00:38.:00:41.

which are once again being targeted at his former companies.

:00:42.:00:46.

We're live with the elite drivers at the Circuit of Ireland,

:00:47.:00:49.

and we'll also have golf's elite in action at the Masters in Augusta.

:00:50.:00:52.

Once the rain clears tonight we're into some really cold air.

:00:53.:00:58.

Temperatures in a few rural spots down to -4 Celsius.

:00:59.:01:06.

First, to the murder of Paul McCauley, who died last

:01:07.:01:11.

June, nine years after an attack which has been described

:01:12.:01:15.

as sectarian and unsanctioned by the UDA.

:01:16.:01:19.

Mr McCauley suffered severe head injuries when he and some friends

:01:20.:01:22.

A 28-year-old man from Londonderry appeared in court in the city this

:01:23.:01:28.

A defence lawyer said, evidence against his client,

:01:29.:01:33.

who denies the charges, comes from audio recordings.

:01:34.:01:38.

Our north-west reporter Keiron Tourish was in the court.

:01:39.:01:42.

Before the court was Matthew Brian Gillen

:01:43.:01:43.

from Kennedy Place in the Fountain Estate.

:01:44.:01:46.

He's accused of the murder of Paul McCauley in June last year.

:01:47.:01:50.

He's also charged with causing grievous bodily harm and attempted

:01:51.:01:52.

The accused stood in the dock in a grey sweatshirt

:01:53.:01:59.

and replied "yep" when asked if he understood the charges.

:02:00.:02:03.

A detective said he believed he could connect him

:02:04.:02:05.

he described the attack on the civil servant as sectarian.

:02:06.:02:13.

38-year-old Paul McCauley died in June last year in a care facility

:02:14.:02:16.

with his family at his bedside, nine years after he was attacked

:02:17.:02:19.

He was attending a BBQ in Chapel Road in

:02:20.:02:24.

It was organised for a friend going off to work in the Middle East,

:02:25.:02:30.

and was attended by a mixed group of Catholic, Protestant

:02:31.:02:32.

A number of people came out of bushes and attacked the civil

:02:33.:02:36.

After the assault, they made off in the direction of the loyalist

:02:37.:02:42.

The father of one needed constant care after being subjected

:02:43.:02:47.

Part of his skull was crushed when he was stamped on.

:02:48.:02:52.

One man has been charged with his murder -

:02:53.:02:59.

Piper John McClements from the Fountain Estate.

:03:00.:03:01.

He was previously known as Daryl Proctor and changed his

:03:02.:03:04.

name while serving a 13-year sentence for inflicting grievous

:03:05.:03:08.

bodily harm with intent on Paul McCauley during the attack.

:03:09.:03:13.

A detective constable quoted the International Monitoring

:03:14.:03:15.

Commission and said this was an unsanctioned UDA attack.

:03:16.:03:19.

He said Matthew Brian Gillen was still linked to loyalism

:03:20.:03:22.

paramilitarism, or at least was supportive of them,

:03:23.:03:26.

and that was based on items found in house searches.

:03:27.:03:31.

The officer objected to bail and said he could interfere

:03:32.:03:34.

with witnesses flee the country or obstruct the course of justice.

:03:35.:03:37.

He also said he was the subject of threats from various

:03:38.:03:40.

A defence lawyer said his client was denying the offence.

:03:41.:03:47.

He said he was a person of good character who'd been in employment

:03:48.:03:50.

for ten years and who had no previous convictions.

:03:51.:03:54.

He said the only evidence against him was audio recordings

:03:55.:03:56.

which were in the hands of the PSNI, and there were no steps he could

:03:57.:04:00.

Matthew Brian Gillen was given bail of ?2,000 and ordered

:04:01.:04:05.

He was also told not to leave the jurisdiction and have no contact

:04:06.:04:12.

directly or indirectly with anyone connected with the case.

:04:13.:04:15.

Keiron Tourish, BBC Newsline, Londonderry Magistrates' Court.

:04:16.:04:20.

A man has been remanded in custody charged with murdering his

:04:21.:04:23.

Gary O'Dowd, who is 36 and from Knocknagore Road

:04:24.:04:28.

in Gilford, denies killing Laura Marshall at her

:04:29.:04:32.

In court, a police officer said the couple's three-year relationship

:04:33.:04:36.

had been a "catalogue" of alleged domestic violence.

:04:37.:04:41.

The sink in the bathroom where Laura's body was found had been

:04:42.:04:59.

pulled from the wall. The landlord led to the discovery of her body. A

:05:00.:05:03.

horrifying description of the scene was given by a detective Sergeant,

:05:04.:05:10.

but it was the boyfriend, Gary O Dowd, who appeared in court charged

:05:11.:05:15.

with murder. They also revealed that the couple's three-year relationship

:05:16.:05:18.

had featured what he called a catalogue of incidents that alleged

:05:19.:05:24.

domestic violence. Applying for a bill, a defence lawyer argued that

:05:25.:05:28.

there was no forensic evidence to connect the client to the crime, but

:05:29.:05:35.

CCTV of the flat showed no sign of him coming or going at any point and

:05:36.:05:39.

there was no eyewitness. The detective confirmed that during 25

:05:40.:05:44.

interviews over several days, Gary O Dowd had consistently denied any

:05:45.:05:47.

involvement in the death of Laura Marshall. Bail was refused and Gary

:05:48.:05:53.

O Dowd will appear again in court next month. BBC Newsline, Craigavon.

evening. Both are between... It happened between junction eight

Inquiry into historical abuse in Northern Ireland is equipped

:06:54.:06:56.

to fully investigate allegations about a former children's

:07:01.:07:03.

that the Kincora Boys home should be examined as part

:07:04.:07:07.

of the Historical Campaigners had argued

:07:08.:07:09.

that the Banbridge Inquiry doesn't have enough powers

to investigate claims At the heart of this case,

the intelligence services. There have been allegations that

:07:21.:07:29.

a paedophile ring at Kincora was linked to some people working

:07:30.:07:32.

in intelligence gathering. Today, campaigners came to court,

:07:33.:07:34.

against the backdrop Three senior care staff

:07:44.:07:49.

refused to include Kincora in a cross-channel Inquiry,

:07:50.:07:54.

established at Westminister. Campaigners here

:07:55.:07:58.

refused to accept that. They claimed the Inquiry

in Banbridge didn't have enough powers to investigate

:08:06.:08:07.

the intelligence services. The Justice said the claim was

:08:08.:08:25.

premature and ill-conceived and dismissed it. They emerged from

courts disappointed. I have a lot of fight in me. It is

:08:32.:08:35.

not about winning. It is about justice. I will do whatever it

takes. Today's ruling is yet another

:08:41.:08:46.

endorsement of the work of the Historical Institutional Abuse

:08:47.:08:50.

Inquiry. For the victims, it is one more footnote in the troubled

:08:51.:08:52.

history of Kincora. The former head of Sport NI,

:08:53.:08:54.

Brian Henning, has claimed he resigned after the Sports

:08:55.:09:00.

Minister Caral Ni Chuilin Last week, the Minister indicated

:09:01.:09:03.

Mr Henning had In an interview today,

:09:04.:09:08.

he disputed her version of events. When Brian Henning stepped down

:09:09.:09:14.

from the Sport NI board last week, Minister Caral Ni Chuilin said

:09:15.:09:22.

it was his decision not hers. Mr Henning had been

:09:23.:09:26.

the chair of the board, The Minister did an interview

:09:27.:09:28.

after they stepped down. In fairness to Brian and Ian, they

:09:29.:09:48.

felt it was appropriate to have new leadership at the board of sport NI.

:09:49.:09:50.

Today Brian Henning gave his side of the story

:09:51.:09:52.

He said the vice-chair and him were called to a meeting

:09:53.:09:55.

and what happened next took them both by surprise.

:09:56.:09:58.

What does the Minister Caral Ni Chuilin say about that? She was not

:09:59.:10:28.

available for interview today but in the past hour she e-mailed a

:10:29.:10:31.

statement in which they said that her and Brian Henning had discussed

:10:32.:10:37.

her concerns about leadership within sport NI and she says having

:10:38.:10:41.

discussed my concerns and having considered his position, he offered

:10:42.:10:47.

his resignation, as did Mr McAvoy. Those are the facts, says the

:10:48.:10:50.

minister, but what would have happened if Brian Henning had not

:10:51.:10:56.

resigned? She does not say. But she did thank Brian Henning and Ian

:10:57.:11:01.

McAvoy for all their hard work and dedication while at Sport NI.

Six weeks after the Republic's general election and a Government

:14:48.:14:49.

Fianna Fail has turned down an offer from Fine Gael to form a coalition.

:14:50.:14:54.

Our Dublin correspondent Shane Harrison joins me now.

:14:55.:14:57.

There was some surprise at the speed at which Fianna Fail rejected the

:14:58.:15:13.

offer of a partnership Government which would have included

:15:14.:15:17.

independence in the Government. They say they are honouring their

:15:18.:15:21.

pre-election pledge but would not be able to support a minority

:15:22.:15:25.

Government. Next Thursday, they are due to meet again to elect. Fianna

:15:26.:15:31.

Fail are likely to have more votes... But Fine Gael and Fina foil

:15:32.:15:39.

are going to have to come to some sort of arrangement and Fine Gael

:15:40.:15:43.

once that arrangement to come in a written form.

:15:44.:15:46.

If we had a minority Government, it would have to be underpinned by a

:15:47.:15:51.

agreement to ensure the Government is stable and we can have a

:15:52.:15:55.

programme. That is something we really have to discuss and talk

:15:56.:15:58.

about and that can only happen if there are talks between the two big

:15:59.:16:02.

parties. If Fianna Fail and Fine Gael can

:16:03.:16:08.

have an understanding about policies and Government and how long that

:16:09.:16:14.

might last, the question for Fianna Fail is if they can agree that much,

:16:15.:16:17.

why not go into Government with Fine Gael, and the question is that they

:16:18.:16:22.

do not want Sinn Fein, which has ruled itself out a Government

:16:23.:16:25.

formation, to be the main opposition party.

:16:26.:16:25.

The prospect of another general election has increased marginally

:16:26.:16:36.

but it is still unlikely at this stage. Today, in Fianna Fail

negotiator said there needed to be a toning down of their rhetoric will

:16:41.:16:45.

stop a call for calm and cool heads to be bail. It is probable that over

:16:46.:16:49.

the weekend, there will be contacts between Fianna Fail and Fine Gael,

:16:50.:16:55.

with Thursday's vote concentrating minds.

:16:56.:16:55.

Thank you. A major sporting event that started

:16:56.:16:57.

yesterday will continue to wind its way round the local

:16:58.:16:59.

countryside over the weekend. Welcome to a very busy surface area

:17:00.:17:19.

at King's Hall in south Belfast. This is for the Circuit of Ireland

:18:05.:18:06.

Reporting from Augusta, Georgia, for BBC Newsline, Stephen Watson.

:18:07.:18:15.

So far today, we have seen the brilliance and the inconsistency of

:18:16.:18:23.

Rory McIlroy. Frustrating at times, superb at others. But there are no

:18:24.:18:27.

players today who have been able to make a charge so far. They look nice

:18:28.:18:32.

and calm at Augusta but it certainly is not. The players are finding it

:18:33.:18:36.

difficult to score today. Rory McIlroy is staying patient and

:18:37.:18:43.

staying in touch with the leader Jordan Spieth who teed off a short

:18:44.:18:49.

time ago. Rory teed off in breezy conditions, determined to get off to

:18:50.:18:53.

a fast start and that he did. Best part was for a birdie at the par-5

:18:54.:19:02.

second. At the next hole, the par-4 thirds, he produced this superb

:19:03.:19:09.

approach shot. And ruled in a second successive birdie, to put himself

:19:10.:19:18.

into a shot for second. But, like yesterday, there were problems at

:19:19.:19:23.

the par-3 4th. A disappointing tee shot saw him finding trouble and

:19:24.:19:26.

eventually this part was for bogey... But there were two dropped

:19:27.:19:32.

shots. That was followed by another bogey and there were some relief

:19:33.:19:38.

when this putt dropped to save par at the 6th. Shane Lowry joint second

:19:39.:19:42.

overnight was unflappable yesterday but today he had to deal with early

:19:43.:19:48.

problems. He dropped two shots in the first two holes but instead his

:19:49.:19:55.

game. -- steadied his game and found his touch on the lightning fast

:19:56.:20:02.

greens. The same could not be said for Graeme McDowell, unfortunately,

:20:03.:20:06.

who dropped four shots in his first five holes and has work to do if he

:20:07.:20:14.

is to make the halfway cut. But Darren Clarke won't be here for the

:20:15.:20:17.

weekend as his frustrations continued on the course. The

:20:18.:20:22.

distractions of Ryder Cup captaincy are taking their toll. Clark will

:20:23.:20:28.

need to train, to qualify in the future, if he wants to come back to

:20:29.:20:32.

the Masters, as his exemption has run out. Can McAvoy Lowry be the

:20:33.:20:36.

first Irish golfer to slip on the green jacket? We shall see in what

:20:37.:20:38.

should be an intriguing weekend. At the latest, speak second under

:20:39.:20:48.

Lowry, four, and Rory McIlroy, six shots off the pace.

:20:49.:20:49.

In local football, with five games remaining

:20:50.:20:50.

in the Danske Bank Premiership, leaders Crusaders are five points

:20:51.:20:53.

Tomorrow the top two meet in the biggest game

:20:54.:20:56.

The crusaders are the champions. They cruised to their first title in

:20:57.:21:10.

18 years last season but retaining the Gibson cup for the first time in

:21:11.:21:14.

their history has not been plain sailing. It is tougher than this

:21:15.:21:21.

time last year. We hit our top form earlier in the season in terms of

:21:22.:21:24.

scoring was of goals. The last few weeks has been more of a grind, so

:21:25.:21:28.

brass to retain the league title for the first time in history -- for us

:21:29.:21:36.

to. We are into the business and and we are trying to get ourselves over

:21:37.:21:40.

the line. He has given Linfield the lead...

:21:41.:21:49.

The 51 league champions, who, despite a shaky start, are currently

:21:50.:21:51.

the Premiership's most informed team.

:21:52.:21:57.

It has injected a bit of bite into them and they look more hungry. The

:21:58.:22:01.

two top teams in Northern Ireland, with the prize of the leak at state,

:22:02.:22:08.

tomorrow it will not be decided but certainly gather some idea of the

:22:09.:22:14.

Gibson cup. -- the two top teams with the price of the league at

:22:15.:22:18.

stake. All the action tomorrow. Derry City

:22:19.:22:19.

in action at the League of Ireland. Staying with the League of Ireland,

if Derry City beat Shamrock Rovers they'll go top of

:22:23.:22:25.

the Airtricity League. It is a young squad and there are

:22:26.:22:33.

only a few of us who have experienced good times and bad so

:22:34.:22:36.

they will be a few bad results in the season, and it is how we can't

:22:37.:22:39.

back which determines where we finish.

In Gaelic football, Donegal must find a way past the reigning

:22:41.:22:43.

All-Ireland and league champions Dublin this Sunday if they're

:22:44.:22:45.

When they met just a fortnight ago, Dublin ran out comfortable

:22:46.:22:51.

This weekend's semifinal is live on BBC Radio Ulster Medium Wave,

:22:52.:23:00.

I hope the weather will be more clement than it is in Belfast this

:23:01.:23:13.

evening. That's it from King's Hall. Goodbye.

:23:14.:23:14.

After such a wet and miserable day it would be lovely to have a few

:23:15.:23:18.

Geoff Maskell is here with the forecast.

:23:19.:23:26.

Good evening. Our Forum manager Peter is on work tonight and he came

:23:27.:23:34.

in earlier, Stoke, covered in raindrops, and he shook them off and

:23:35.:23:40.

said it is ghastly today. -- soaked. It is a brilliant day for an

:23:41.:23:43.

umbrella but tonight you can trade that in for a duvet and a hot water

:23:44.:23:49.

bottle, because if the rain has been the story of the daylight hours,

:23:50.:23:54.

overnight, the story is of this cold air moving in behind the front. It

:23:55.:23:57.

means the temperatures will drop away overnight. We could see minimum

:23:58.:24:04.

temperatures down as low as minus four Celsius in some places. It

:24:05.:24:08.

could be a busy night for the road service with the gritters and for a

:24:09.:24:15.

while... Some icy patches on untreated roads by dawn tomorrow.

:24:16.:24:19.

The good news is that at this time of the year, some of us get up

:24:20.:24:24.

early, so icy patches should melt away quickly, so Saturday morning

:24:25.:24:31.

should be decent. It will be dry and bright for a time, with average is

:24:32.:24:34.

around seven Celsius through the morning, but by the afternoon, it is

:24:35.:24:41.

different. We will see increasing showers popping up. Those will be

:24:42.:24:47.

wintry in nature, so expect hail and maybe thunder as well. Those showers

:24:48.:24:52.

continued through the evening. Saturday into Sunday, it will be

:24:53.:24:59.

another cold night. We hold onto this chilly theme to our weather on

:25:00.:25:03.

Sunday, but with one additional factor. Well the air temperature is

:25:04.:25:09.

going to be a bit warmer on Sunday and Saturday, give an eye on the

:25:10.:25:13.

wind. Through the afternoon, the wind picks up. A bit more wind chill

:25:14.:25:20.

in the factor to our weather. Despite those getting up into double

:25:21.:25:27.

figures, it could be chilly. The weekend forecast is reasonably dry

:25:28.:25:31.

with that additional breeze through Sunday afternoon, it might feel more

:25:32.:25:37.

cool than those numbers suggest. If you wrap up, you should be able to

:25:38.:25:40.

get out in the garden and get a few jobs done.

:25:41.:25:45.

Sunday is the best day to get out the camera. Have a good weekend.

:25:46.:25:51.

Finally a look at our headlines this Friday evening. A man appeared in

:25:52.:25:57.

court in Londonderry today charged with the moor of Paul McCauley who

:25:58.:26:00.

died nine years after an assault. The boyfriend of this law again when

:26:01.:26:07.

Laura Marshall has been remanded in custody charged with moor last

:26:08.:26:15.

weekend. -- Lurgan. The moto-mac, motorway has been closed westbound

:26:16.:26:19.

between Wairoa and Lurgan following two separate crashes it is

:26:20.:26:23.

understood one of the collisions involves three vehicles. -- Moira.
