This is BBC Newsline and these are the headlines this Monday | :00:12. | :00:16.
evening: A teenager is questioned about the weekend murder | :00:17. | :00:20.
The DPP says the sentence imposed on the drunk driver who killed this | :00:21. | :00:27.
A new inquest and new hope for the families of the ten men | :00:28. | :00:34.
The Tyrone woman jailed for lying about her husband's IS plans. | :00:35. | :00:42.
Rory McIlroy tells us he may not go to the Olympics because | :00:43. | :00:45.
Welcome to Paradise where Brendan Rodgers, from the Glens of Antrim, | :00:46. | :01:01.
to Celtic Park. We will bring you the latest as he prepares to meet | :01:02. | :01:05.
his beloved Celtic fans. And it's been a fairly dry start | :01:06. | :01:07.
to the week, I'll be back with details of how the rest | :01:08. | :01:10.
of the week is shaping up. Detectives investigating the murder | :01:11. | :01:15.
of a man at the weekend have been granted a further 24 hours | :01:16. | :01:18.
to question a 16-year-old boy. Gerard Quinn from Currynierin | :01:19. | :01:23.
in Londonderry died after a stabbing He was 24 years old and | :01:24. | :01:27.
the father of a little girl. Our north west reporter | :01:28. | :01:35.
Keiron Tourish has been speaking Gerard Quinn was assaulted around | :01:36. | :01:50.
10pm on Saturday night. It is understood he suffered a wound to | :01:51. | :01:53.
his neck. He was taken from the scene of the accident to Altnagelvin | :01:54. | :02:01.
hospital. But later died. His twin brother was also assaulted and | :02:02. | :02:03.
treated for injuries but later released. A 16-year-old youth was | :02:04. | :02:08.
arrested following the murder and is being questioned by detectives. The | :02:09. | :02:13.
family are devastated by their loss. Gerard Quinn was a father of one, a | :02:14. | :02:19.
daughter, who was two years old. They are a big family in these areas | :02:20. | :02:25.
and they are very well known. My reaction was that this was a | :02:26. | :02:28.
terrible events to have happened, a horrible thing to have happened and | :02:29. | :02:33.
that is what all the people in the community are saying because they | :02:34. | :02:36.
know the family and this is a devastation for the family. It is | :02:37. | :02:39.
believed there was a party going on here at the time of the incident. | :02:40. | :02:44.
One neighbour said he tried to save Gerard Quinn 's wife. I just saw | :02:45. | :02:51.
this body lying at the wall. I ran in and got a couple of clots. I was | :02:52. | :02:57.
keeping pressure on his neck and the cops then turned up and straightaway | :02:58. | :03:03.
I started CPR. He went to the hospital with a pulse and he was | :03:04. | :03:08.
fighting for his life. I will never get over this. Those who knew Gerard | :03:09. | :03:12.
Quinn described him as fun loving and popular. The minute he came in | :03:13. | :03:19.
the room, you knew he was there. Especially at the football in the | :03:20. | :03:23.
changing rooms, you get a lot of banter flying and Gerard was always | :03:24. | :03:28.
involved in that, always giving sick and taking stick, just fun loving. | :03:29. | :03:34.
That is how I picture him. Everybody knows everybody so the whole estate | :03:35. | :03:46.
are just devastated, number and just speechless. Nobody can't wait to get | :03:47. | :03:51.
in. That view was reflected throughout the estate. | :03:52. | :03:54.
The sentence imposed on a drunk driver who killed a County Tyrone | :03:55. | :03:57.
teenager is to be referred to the Appeal Court on the grounds | :03:58. | :04:00.
The move by the Public Prosecution Service concerns the case | :04:01. | :04:06.
of the 18-year-old student Enda Dolan who was knocked down | :04:07. | :04:09.
Kevin Magee has been speaking to his father who has asked | :04:10. | :04:15.
I agree with you, something has to be done in the courts. Enda Dolan's | :04:16. | :04:30.
father reads from some of the many messages of support he has received | :04:31. | :04:33.
since his son's killer was sentenced. To let you know that we | :04:34. | :04:38.
as a family know how you are feeling and support you all the way in | :04:39. | :04:45.
fighting for justice system. Musician and sportsmen Enda Dolan | :04:46. | :04:48.
was knocked down and killed by a drunk tripper as he walked back to | :04:49. | :04:52.
his Queens University accommodation in October 2014. David Lee Stewart | :04:53. | :05:00.
had consumed 13 alcoholic drinks when his van mounted the pavement, | :05:01. | :05:04.
killing the teenager. Last month he was given a seven-year sentence of | :05:05. | :05:09.
which he will spend half in jail and the remainder on licence. Heater at | :05:10. | :05:13.
once the maximum sentence for drunk drivers because increased. We have | :05:14. | :05:21.
had 108 MLAs appointed to our assembly. We will throw down the | :05:22. | :05:29.
conflict to those MLAs and ask them to change the sentencing from 14 | :05:30. | :05:35.
years to 20 years. There is no reason why that cannot be done. It's | :05:36. | :05:42.
important. There is no deterrent for anybody drinking and driving and 14 | :05:43. | :05:49.
years maximum sentence is not sufficient under the current law. | :05:50. | :05:53.
Politicians at Stormont could change the law of the political will | :05:54. | :05:58.
exists. The issue of changing the law and sentencing is in the | :05:59. | :06:03.
competence of the assembly. If we increase the sentence, it sends a | :06:04. | :06:06.
message to the judges that there is an expectation on the part of the | :06:07. | :06:10.
public how sentences will begin but it does remain with the individual | :06:11. | :06:15.
judge on every case. The Public Prosecution Service had been | :06:16. | :06:17.
considering whether or not it should refer the sentence in this case to | :06:18. | :06:22.
the Court of Appeal. Late this afternoon it announced it will be | :06:23. | :06:26.
using its powers to try and have the sentence looked at on the basis that | :06:27. | :06:29.
it was and uniquely named. If the Court of Appeal agreed to this | :06:30. | :06:33.
request, the sentence will be reviewed. | :06:34. | :06:35.
A fresh inquest has begun into the murder of ten Protestant | :06:36. | :06:37.
workmen at Kingsmills in County Armagh in 1976. | :06:38. | :06:40.
The families say they hope the long-awaited hearing will get | :06:41. | :06:44.
40 years after he was left for dead by the side of a road in South | :06:45. | :07:00.
Armagh, Alan Black arrives for the opening of a fresh inquest into the | :07:01. | :07:06.
death of his friends. Although badly injured, Mr Black was the only | :07:07. | :07:11.
survivor of what became known as the Kingsmills massacre when ten absent | :07:12. | :07:15.
factory workers were shot dead as they made their way home. We have | :07:16. | :07:20.
fought long and hard for this. There have been so many obstacles put in | :07:21. | :07:24.
our way and thanks to these people here, they have got over each one | :07:25. | :07:31.
and really, this is a red letter day for us, to finally get our day in | :07:32. | :07:35.
court. The fight for a fresh inquest has lasted for decades. The families | :07:36. | :07:40.
eventually persuaded the authorities that there was new and significant | :07:41. | :07:45.
evidence including that honoured by a report which blamed the IRA. There | :07:46. | :07:52.
are still people out there withholding information. Either they | :07:53. | :07:54.
are too scared to come forward and you have to respect that, but I | :07:55. | :07:59.
would still appeal for them to come forward at this late stage. You can | :08:00. | :08:04.
hurt nobody at the end of the day and that is what we are striving | :08:05. | :08:08.
for, the truth. This afternoon, one by one, the next of kin took to the | :08:09. | :08:14.
stand is their loved ones and tell how their cruel death affected the | :08:15. | :08:18.
lives of those left behind. Most of the harrowing detail we had heard | :08:19. | :08:21.
before like Howell, believing strongly that the gang intended to | :08:22. | :08:25.
kill the only Catholic on the bus, the men had refused to betray him. | :08:26. | :08:31.
How Alan Black Labour need the dead and dying and how among the moans | :08:32. | :08:36.
and cries of pain at the dishes order had been barked out, finished | :08:37. | :08:40.
them off. All of this was learned a new poignancy as it was said out | :08:41. | :08:45.
loud in a courtroom. The inquest is expected to last at least a month or | :08:46. | :08:49.
six weeks with Alan Black due to give his evidence as early as | :08:50. | :08:50.
Wednesday. A Northern Ireland woman has been | :08:51. | :08:53.
jailed for failing to tell the authorities her husband | :08:54. | :08:56.
was about to join the so called She was among a group of friends | :08:57. | :09:00.
from Walsall in England who planned to bring up their children under | :09:01. | :09:05.
the Caliphate in Syria. Mother of three Lorna Mara from the | :09:06. | :09:19.
Mountjoy area near, was tried at the Old Bailey in London. Today she was | :09:20. | :09:24.
jailed for 2.5 years preparing to tell the authorities that her | :09:25. | :09:28.
husband was about to join the militant group, so-called Islamic | :09:29. | :09:33.
State. Her husband was part of a large network that had heeded the | :09:34. | :09:38.
militants calls for volunteers in 2014. The police say 12 people from | :09:39. | :09:43.
Walsall in the West Midlands went or try to get to Syria that year. The | :09:44. | :09:50.
four-year-old mirror, was planning to take her three young children to | :09:51. | :09:53.
the war zones including an 11-month-old baby. During sentencing | :09:54. | :09:57.
at the Old Bailey, the judge described her as a very strong | :09:58. | :10:01.
character and said she knew perfectly well of her husband 's | :10:02. | :10:05.
dedication to terrorism. The judge added that one of the troubling | :10:06. | :10:08.
things about the Tyrone woman of the facility were telling lies. He said | :10:09. | :10:13.
she had told lie after lie to the jury during her trial and that some | :10:14. | :10:14.
of the evidence was nonsense. The motorcycle racer Ryan Farquhar | :10:15. | :10:18.
who was injured in the recent North West 200 event has been | :10:19. | :10:21.
returned to intensive The Dungannon rider suffered | :10:22. | :10:24.
injuries to his chest and pelvis He was moved out of intensive care | :10:25. | :10:30.
at the Royal Victoria But over the weekend he went back | :10:31. | :10:35.
in and is described Rory McIlroy has told BBC | :10:36. | :10:39.
Newsline that he may not play at the Rio Olympics | :10:40. | :10:44.
because of the spread In an exclusive interview | :10:45. | :10:46.
with Stephen Watson, McIlroy who won the Irish Open yesterday, | :10:47. | :10:52.
said he was closely monitoring news Rory McIlroy told me today he is | :10:53. | :11:06.
monitoring physical barriers very carefully and may not to real if the | :11:07. | :11:11.
barriers which is linked to reign of deformities in newborn babies get | :11:12. | :11:16.
any worse. He won the Irish open yesterday and today brought the | :11:17. | :11:20.
trophy here where amongst other things, he visited Ireland hockey | :11:21. | :11:26.
team and for real and says he is reevaluating whether he will be on | :11:27. | :11:29.
the plane this summer. I have been reading a lot of reports about the | :11:30. | :11:33.
Zika virus. I know some articles have said it might be worse than | :11:34. | :11:37.
what they are saying so I have to monitor the situation as well. | :11:38. | :11:43.
There's going to be a point in time where we are going to have to start | :11:44. | :11:48.
thinking of starting a family so I don't want anything to affect that. | :11:49. | :11:52.
I am ready to go to the Olympics and go to real and try to compete for a | :11:53. | :11:56.
gold medal. Is there a chance you might not go if that gets worse? | :11:57. | :12:01.
Yes, I am getting my injections on Wednesday for last so at least I | :12:02. | :12:09.
will be immunised if I do get bitten by a mosquito! Right now, I am going | :12:10. | :12:15.
and I am looking forward to it and hopefully competing for the gold. | :12:16. | :12:20.
Omitted at the moment but very concerned and it's possible he may | :12:21. | :12:21.
change his mind. The police are treating the assault | :12:22. | :12:23.
of three young people in north Belfast on Saturday afternoon | :12:24. | :12:26.
as a sectarian hate crime. They were attacked | :12:27. | :12:30.
on the Ardoyne Road. One of the victims, who's 13 years | :12:31. | :12:33.
old, says he now doesn't feel safe They said, where are you from? We | :12:34. | :12:48.
just ignored them. They said, are you dirty we Protestants? I said, | :12:49. | :12:54.
what has got to do if you? They walked up behind us and started to | :12:55. | :12:58.
punch us. They pushed me up against a wall and my head and started | :12:59. | :13:03.
punching me in the face. It makes Beefeater annoyed that I cannot go | :13:04. | :13:05.
somewhere without being attacked because of my religion. | :13:06. | :13:11.
The First Minister says she is confident of forming a government | :13:12. | :13:17.
despite concerns of the appointment of a justice minister. That is not | :13:18. | :13:28.
something we have really considered at this point in time. There will be | :13:29. | :13:32.
a government, there will be a minister and we're looking forward | :13:33. | :13:33.
to Wednesday and thirsty. More than 6,000 people attended | :13:34. | :13:35.
hospital Emergency Departments last year having self harmed - | :13:36. | :13:38.
a figure described by Northern Ireland's largest | :13:39. | :13:41.
mental health charity A majority of the patients | :13:42. | :13:43.
were aged between 15 and 24. More than 8,500 incidents | :13:44. | :13:47.
were reported in a year and a number of the people sought help did | :13:48. | :13:51.
so on more than one occasion. The figures are part | :13:52. | :13:55.
of the Chief Medical Officer's annual report which reflects | :13:56. | :13:58.
on the population's health. Professor Peter McBride from | :13:59. | :14:02.
the Northern Ireland Association for Mental Health says he fears | :14:03. | :14:04.
the real number of people self People who are cutting as a way of | :14:05. | :14:16.
coping with their emotions will not go to A so often what is happening | :14:17. | :14:20.
is, they are using this as a means but it's not coming through the | :14:21. | :14:24.
system and will not show up as statistics so it's hard to give an | :14:25. | :14:27.
accurate view of the prevalence of this sort of thing. What we can be | :14:28. | :14:32.
sure of is that the numbers presented here are the tip of the | :14:33. | :14:33.
iceberg. Demand for foster care has reached | :14:34. | :14:34.
an all time high with an appeal The award of Foster Carer | :14:35. | :14:37.
of the Year has been given to a couple who look after 5 boys, | :14:38. | :14:43.
including 2 sets of siblings There is very little time for rest | :14:44. | :15:08.
in the house. This couple posture five boys. The eldest has been with | :15:09. | :15:12.
them for 15 years. The line-up includes two sets of brothers and | :15:13. | :15:17.
all have health problems. Each boy does have complex needs and it has | :15:18. | :15:24.
been tough over the last number of years but you wouldn't be without | :15:25. | :15:28.
them. That is why we do it. When you see a child coming through that | :15:29. | :15:32.
door, standing harrowing in the corner and that is what they do. Of | :15:33. | :15:37.
course they are frightened and you see them progress. The more you | :15:38. | :15:39.
listen to them, the more you make them feel like they are in a normal | :15:40. | :15:44.
environment and a star to settle down. That is why we do it. The | :15:45. | :15:48.
youngest child has a serious heart condition. Then travelled with him | :15:49. | :15:53.
to Birmingham for surgery, a trip that lasted 16 weeks. You treat them | :15:54. | :16:00.
like you own, how can you not? You get so close to them and they tell | :16:01. | :16:05.
you they love them. It's a nice feeling. Around 2150 children across | :16:06. | :16:10.
Northern Ireland are living with over 2000 foster families. Or carers | :16:11. | :16:16.
are required but the assessment system is often criticised for being | :16:17. | :16:21.
too slow. There are a series of checks and a rigorous assessment | :16:22. | :16:25.
process and it's really important that all our services work together | :16:26. | :16:28.
to make sure that happens in a way that is timely and expedited in a | :16:29. | :16:33.
way that makes sure we can meet at 170 target every year. This couple | :16:34. | :16:39.
's two children are now grown up but keeping on the family tradition, | :16:40. | :16:43.
their son and his wife have recently been accepted as foster carers. | :16:44. | :16:46.
The Prince of Wales is in Northern Ireland on the start | :16:47. | :16:49.
Prince Charles was greeted at Belfast's Titanic Quarter | :16:50. | :16:52.
by the First Minister Arlene Foster and other political representatives. | :16:53. | :16:55.
Inside he was shown the latest cyber security to combat internet hackers | :16:56. | :16:59.
and he officially opened a global research institute, | :17:00. | :17:02.
Tomorrow Prince Charles will be joined by his wife the Duchess | :17:03. | :17:07.
of Cornwall for a second round of engagements | :17:08. | :17:09.
day before heading to County Donegal on Wednesday. | :17:10. | :17:11.
Earlier in the programme Rory McIlroy told us about his | :17:12. | :17:13.
concerns about going to the Rio Olympics. | :17:14. | :17:15.
One thing he is certain about though is where the Irish Open | :17:16. | :17:18.
Rory McIlroy says he wants to defend his Irish open title | :17:19. | :17:24.
The world number 3 today told BBC Newsline he thinks | :17:25. | :17:29.
Portstewart on the north coast is the perfect venue. | :17:30. | :17:32.
McIlroy, who donated his prize fund of over ?500,000, | :17:33. | :17:35.
reflected on yesterday's memorable triumph with Stephen Watson. | :17:36. | :17:42.
It was nice to enjoy the win last night and celebrate with my friends | :17:43. | :17:48.
and family and try not to cry! I was trying not to look up at the | :17:49. | :17:52.
hospitality suite because I knew my friends and family were up there and | :17:53. | :17:59.
I know how much it meant to my parents that I won the Aaron | :18:00. | :18:03.
Shotton. It's something I have dreams about for a long, long time. | :18:04. | :18:10.
Even now I am getting emotional. It all sort of hit me. I had a few | :18:11. | :18:16.
moments on the 18th green to try to think about it all and for it to pan | :18:17. | :18:21.
out the way it did, we couldn't have scripted it any better. How | :18:22. | :18:24.
important is it for you that the tournament returns to Northern | :18:25. | :18:27.
Ireland next year? It is huge. Have a nice little thing going here where | :18:28. | :18:32.
the Irish Open goes north on year, sell the next year. It would be | :18:33. | :18:36.
unfair to keep it in the same place every year because then the whole | :18:37. | :18:40.
country don't get to experience what it's like so Portstewart is for sure | :18:41. | :18:45.
good enough golf course to host the Aaron Shotton. That front of | :18:46. | :18:50.
Portstewart is probably one of the best nine holes in the world, it's | :18:51. | :18:55.
incredible. I would love to bring it to a links course and we're looking | :18:56. | :18:59.
at a few courses but Portstewart is one we are taking very series. | :19:00. | :19:01.
Rory also spent some time today with the Northern Ireland football | :19:02. | :19:03.
squad heading to Euro 2016.We'll have an exclusive feature | :19:04. | :19:06.
on what he had to share with Michael O'Neill's team | :19:07. | :19:08.
Brendan Rodgers has pledged to Celtic fans that the club | :19:09. | :19:15.
will dominate Scottish football and enjoy success in Europe. | :19:16. | :19:18.
Today he held his first press conference since being appointed | :19:19. | :19:22.
From early morning, this city has been awash with Brendan Rodgers | :19:23. | :19:38.
denier. At 3:30, the man from Carnlough drove up Celtic Way, got | :19:39. | :19:42.
out of a big fan and it was then off to meet the media where he gave a | :19:43. | :19:49.
commanding performance. There was a draw for me here. Celtic is one of | :19:50. | :19:52.
the biggest clubs in the world and for me to come out of the Premier | :19:53. | :19:57.
League to come here, it certainly not a step down. This is one of the | :19:58. | :20:02.
great clubs of the world, it's an institution in its own right suffer | :20:03. | :20:05.
me to come here, it is a huge honour and privilege to be able to come and | :20:06. | :20:09.
manage Celtic. I know the first thing you did today was to go pitch | :20:10. | :20:16.
side and meet the fans. As you sit here now and they had the privilege | :20:17. | :20:19.
of this job, what is your message to Celtic fans? The message is that we | :20:20. | :20:25.
will do our very best. I am here because of them. I have been a | :20:26. | :20:30.
Celtic supporter all my life. I am very lucky now to have been given | :20:31. | :20:35.
the opportunity to step out of the stands and the sideline and manage | :20:36. | :20:39.
the team. Hopefully they will understand that when you have that | :20:40. | :20:43.
passion and emotion involved in a club, myself, the staff and the | :20:44. | :20:47.
players will do all we can to meet the challenges that are set for us | :20:48. | :20:52.
and that is to dominate here in Scotland and to qualify for the | :20:53. | :21:01.
Champions League. Without, we need. So the Brendan Rodgers era has | :21:02. | :21:06.
officially begun. The man has passed the media examination but | :21:07. | :21:07.
ultimately, bigger tests lie ahead. Tyrone had this game won in the | :21:08. | :21:50.
first half with a 3-goal blitz that rocked Derry. A second from London | :21:51. | :22:04.
O'Neill soon followed. With a crucial third just before half-time, | :22:05. | :22:14.
to put Tyrone well clear. That is how you do it. It is Mickey Harte, | :22:15. | :22:21.
it is Tyrone. The game over? Derry 's attempted to strike back in the | :22:22. | :22:27.
second half proved fruitless. Seeing red with a stray elbow. The | :22:28. | :22:31.
qualifiers now I wait while Tyrone advanced to the semifinals of the | :22:32. | :22:36.
Ulster championship. Goals are very important in championship matches | :22:37. | :22:38.
and we got the goals in the first half. To be great but to get three | :22:39. | :22:48.
probably one begin for us. That was going to guarantee success. I have | :22:49. | :22:53.
to accept responsibility in terms of the hall package. Emotionally and | :22:54. | :22:58.
physically, where we write? 11 points deficit and pulling up at the | :22:59. | :23:02.
end, I think we are better than that. It was Mickey Harte's 250th | :23:03. | :23:08.
game in charge. There have been a few more comfortable victories. Now | :23:09. | :23:12.
face cavern or Armagh for a place in the final. | :23:13. | :23:15.
In the World Rally Championship Kris Meeke picked up a comfortable | :23:16. | :23:17.
Meeke finished almost thirty seconds ahead of his nearest rival. | :23:18. | :23:21.
The Dungannon man is not competing in every rally this season, | :23:22. | :23:24.
as his Citroen team develops a new car for 2017, | :23:25. | :23:26.
which made his win all the more encouraging. | :23:27. | :23:30.
Finally Carrick Rangers have confirmed they have accepted | :23:31. | :23:32.
the resignation of manager Gary Haveron and his | :23:33. | :23:35.
Don't forget tomorrow we have Rory McIlroy and the Northern | :23:36. | :23:40.
The weather is next. The heavy downpours of the weekend | :23:41. | :23:55.
are well behind us but despite that, it was still nice at times in the | :23:56. | :24:02.
sun. This picture taken over the weekend just proves how the sun can | :24:03. | :24:06.
make the difference. This week we're looking at a much quieter | :24:07. | :24:09.
conditions. We will have a lot of settled weather and a lot of dry | :24:10. | :24:12.
weather as well. Quite funny tomorrow but by the end of the week, | :24:13. | :24:16.
more cloud and a few showers particularly in the East but compare | :24:17. | :24:19.
to the weekend, it will be much drier. Good news for a lot of | :24:20. | :24:25.
farmers. The cloudy skies we had earlier, the cloud is already | :24:26. | :24:28.
breaking up so more in the way of sunshine with this evening. Quite | :24:29. | :24:33.
clear tonight and as a result, quite chilly reports of Tyrone and | :24:34. | :24:36.
Fermanagh. Temperatures could be low enough for a touch of Frost on the | :24:37. | :24:40.
grass. First thing tomorrow, a little bit cool but the sun is up | :24:41. | :24:45.
early and it will not be too long before it warms up. A lot of warm | :24:46. | :24:51.
and sunny weather. Worst thing, a little bit cool in places. Some mist | :24:52. | :24:57.
around as well but not too long before we see double figures and | :24:58. | :25:01.
we're looking at plenty of fine, dry, bright weather through the day. | :25:02. | :25:06.
And yet sunshine as well. Strong sunshine, remember that. | :25:07. | :25:11.
Temperatures in the highest up to 17 or 18 degrees. One to showers are | :25:12. | :25:16.
possible but they will be few or far between. Another fine evening | :25:17. | :25:21.
tomorrow. Try light again, a little bit cool in the countryside and as | :25:22. | :25:24.
we move into Wednesday, are still looking at any drive weather. So the | :25:25. | :25:31.
easterly breeze as well. Probably not as much sunshine compared to | :25:32. | :25:34.
tomorrow so temperatures will be lower and towards the end of the | :25:35. | :25:35.
week, just one or two showers. | :25:36. | :25:39. |
