Football supporters and officials have paid tribute | :00:00. | :00:11.
to the Northern Ireland fan who died in an accidental fall in France. | :00:12. | :00:15.
Just a few hours after watching the team play their first game | :00:16. | :00:18.
at the Euros, Darren Rodgers from Ballymena fell from a height | :00:19. | :00:26.
During the Republic's game this evening people who had gathered | :00:27. | :00:31.
at the fan zone in Belfast unfurled a banner to sympathise | :00:32. | :00:33.
with the 24-year-old's family and friends. | :00:34. | :00:35.
The death of 24-year-old Darren Rodgers has stunned fans here in | :00:36. | :00:49.
France. We still don't know the circumstances all we know is that he | :00:50. | :00:54.
fell from the promenade here in Nice on to the beach below. Friends of | :00:55. | :00:59.
Darren Rodgers gathered at the place where he died. They left their | :01:00. | :01:05.
tributes, but in truth, they still couldn't believe he was gone. | :01:06. | :01:10.
The young man from Ballymena came to France to follow Northern Ireland. | :01:11. | :01:14.
In the early hours of this morning, he fell from the promenade in Nice. | :01:15. | :01:19.
Darren Rodgers wasn't just a football fan, he played football and | :01:20. | :01:27.
many of his team-mates from Braid United Are also in France. We all | :01:28. | :01:33.
stuck together and met up as a local team, local boys. How will you | :01:34. | :01:41.
remember him? I will just remember him for being Darda. A cheeky grin. | :01:42. | :01:48.
He was a great fella. French police are investigating what happened. | :01:49. | :01:52.
With the help of a number of officers from the PSNI. It does | :01:53. | :01:56.
appear this was an accident. It happened in the early hours of the | :01:57. | :02:00.
morning somewhere around 2am and it would appear that this fan has | :02:01. | :02:05.
fallen from the quay wall on the prommen thatted down tonne o on to a | :02:06. | :02:12.
rocky and stoney beach. Last night fans gathered on the beach following | :02:13. | :02:16.
the match. Many were close to where the tragedy occurred. This morning | :02:17. | :02:20.
word quickly spread about what happened. It puts everything into | :02:21. | :02:24.
prospective. It really, really does. Our hearts go out to the family back | :02:25. | :02:28.
home. It is horrendous news for anyone to be waking up to. Sympathy | :02:29. | :02:32.
to the family was also sent by the First Minister. Everyone here, | :02:33. | :02:37.
having such a marvellous time, and then for this to happen. It really | :02:38. | :02:43.
does and I know all of the fans will be deeply, deeply saddened by what | :02:44. | :02:46.
happened to this young man. We are out here to have the time of our | :02:47. | :02:50.
lives and now we've lost one of our own. Sadly a life has been lost and | :02:51. | :02:57.
it has been Darren. Everyone who knew him is devastated and | :02:58. | :03:01.
struggling to understand how the trip of a lifetime could end in such | :03:02. | :03:04.
a tragedy. Most of the travelling supporters are now on their way to | :03:05. | :03:09.
Lille where Northern Ireland play their next match against Ukraine on | :03:10. | :03:13.
Thursday. And fans are planning their own special tribute to Darren | :03:14. | :03:18.
Rodgers at the game and back in Ballymena his friends are making | :03:19. | :03:19.
banners to bring to the match. One of Darren's team mates | :03:20. | :03:23.
from Braid United has been paying Darren was with us for five years. | :03:24. | :03:37.
He came when he was 19. He just came along with his mates. Always had a | :03:38. | :03:42.
smile on his face. Was always good fun. As I've said before, you always | :03:43. | :03:47.
knew when he was up to mischief because he had the wee grin on his | :03:48. | :03:55.
face and then you knew your socks or your boots was missing. | :03:56. | :03:58.
The Northern Ireland manager Michael O'Neill spoke of the shock | :03:59. | :04:00.
that the team felt on hearing about the supporter's death. | :04:01. | :04:03.
I woke this morning to find out the news about Darren and the terrible | :04:04. | :04:08.
tragedy last night. So as I say, our sympathies go out to his family | :04:09. | :04:12.
obviously back in Ballymena and to his friends that travelled here with | :04:13. | :04:16.
him to be part of it and it is a very, very sad day. How have the | :04:17. | :04:20.
players reacted to the news today? I think, you know, they were genuinely | :04:21. | :04:25.
devastated to hear that. You see, we all have friends and family here at | :04:26. | :04:29.
the tournament as well and to I had that someone coming out to be part | :04:30. | :04:33.
of this, you know, festival of football unfortunately lost their | :04:34. | :04:36.
life to a terrible tragedy. It puts everything into prospective. I | :04:37. | :04:40.
suppose it puts the defeat yesterday very much into prospective? Yeah, we | :04:41. | :04:43.
were disappointed we lost the game. We gave everything we had on the | :04:44. | :04:48.
night, but when you travel back and you wake to find, you know, the news | :04:49. | :04:52.
we received this morning, as I say, we can only sympathize with Darren's | :04:53. | :04:56.
family and friends. What can the team do as a mark of respect? Well, | :04:57. | :05:01.
I spoke briefly to the players about it today. We're just waiting | :05:02. | :05:06.
confirmation from Uefa as regards whether we can do anything before | :05:07. | :05:11.
the game. If possible, we will do that. But equally, I think the best | :05:12. | :05:17.
thing the team can do is put on as good a performance as they can | :05:18. | :05:20.
against Ukraine. The supporters have been magnificent. Right through the | :05:21. | :05:26.
qualifying and in Niece as well and I suppose I just urge them to stick | :05:27. | :05:29.
together and to look after each other when they are out here. | :05:30. | :05:32.
Stephen Watson asking the questions there. | :05:33. | :05:34.
The Republic of Ireland kicked off their tournament | :05:35. | :05:36.
with a 1-1 draw against Sweden at the Stade de France in Paris. | :05:37. | :05:39.
It was so nearly the perfect start to the European Championships for | :05:40. | :05:52.
the Republic of Ireland, but Martin O'Neill's men had to make do with a | :05:53. | :05:55.
point following their opening fixture in Paris. | :05:56. | :06:00.
For many of the players, this was their first experience of a major | :06:01. | :06:04.
tournament. But they certainly didn't look over awed by the | :06:05. | :06:08.
occasion. Martin O'Neill's side dominated the early stages, cre | :06:09. | :06:12.
creating a number of clear cut chances. One of the best fell to the | :06:13. | :06:18.
captain, John O'Shea came so close to connecting with Kieran's Clarke | :06:19. | :06:23.
header. The effort struck the crossbar. The breakthrough came | :06:24. | :06:32.
after half-time. Coleman's cross finished by Hoolahan. The highlight | :06:33. | :06:42.
of his Man of the Match performance. The Republic of Ireland fans and | :06:43. | :06:47.
their manager certainly approved of the strike. But O'Neill's side just | :06:48. | :06:54.
couldn't hang on for victory. The unfortunate Clarke heading into his | :06:55. | :06:57.
own net. Well, I was delighted with the | :06:58. | :07:00.
performance. The players were brilliant. Should have had the game | :07:01. | :07:05.
out of sight by half-time. We were explosive. We played some great | :07:06. | :07:08.
football and just couldn't get the goal. Then we get it in the second | :07:09. | :07:14.
half which we deserved. We had to with stand pressure for a ten minute | :07:15. | :07:18.
period and we defended them well and they got a goal out of the blue | :07:19. | :07:21.
really when we were dominant. How special a moment was that for you | :07:22. | :07:25.
personally? Yeah, it is up there with one of the proudest moments in | :07:26. | :07:29.
football to get the goal and you know, it was a great ball in by | :07:30. | :07:34.
Seamus and we were unlucky not to get the three points. You won Man of | :07:35. | :07:40.
the Match, how pleasing was it to put in a performance like that? | :07:41. | :07:44.
Hopefully, I'm disappointed with not getting the three points. | :07:45. | :07:51.
A little bit special from Wes, wasn't it? That's what he is about. | :07:52. | :07:56.
He is a genius. He is one of them players, you know what I mean | :07:57. | :07:59.
sometimes, he looks like he will lose the ball, but he will come out | :08:00. | :08:03.
with something brilliant. A fantastic goal for him and I'm | :08:04. | :08:07.
delighted for him. Our fans were immense, they were unbelievable and | :08:08. | :08:11.
if we can bring that into the next two games we can get a win on the | :08:12. | :08:15.
board. Next up, it is a difficult trip to Bordeaux to take on Belgium | :08:16. | :08:20.
before Martin O'Neill's men head to Lille where they will play against | :08:21. | :08:22.
Italy in their final group game. Across the city Irish bars are | :08:23. | :08:41.
heaving with fans. It has been a long day and the draw could have | :08:42. | :08:45.
been a lot better, but it could have been a lot worse! | :08:46. | :08:51.
Three hours before kick off, eight kilometres from the stadium, the | :08:52. | :08:53.
battle had begun on the boulevard. # Stand up for the boys in green. # | :08:54. | :09:16.
They responded, but they didn't have the numbers! | :09:17. | :09:25.
As the lucky ones made their way to the stad de-France, they provided | :09:26. | :09:28.
more than a little entertainment for the locals! | :09:29. | :09:40.
For those without a ticket, it was the fans zone at the Eiffel Tower | :09:41. | :09:44.
and for 48 minutes, it looked like the place to be! | :09:45. | :09:48.
But then an equaliser and the heads went down. But all is not lost. | :09:49. | :09:56.
First-half, definitely. Second half brings on Robbie Keane. Doesn't | :09:57. | :10:03.
touch it. Doesn't do enough, but listen, 1-1 draw is as good as | :10:04. | :10:09.
anything. You're still in it. Finished 1-1, come on Ireland! For | :10:10. | :10:12.
many of these fans they will be on the road in the next few days on to | :10:13. | :10:17.
Bordeaux and they will be hoping that Belgium will lose the next | :10:18. | :10:18.
battle. Here at home Republic of Ireland | :10:19. | :10:24.
fans gathered at the Euro fan zone This was ecstatic reaction | :10:25. | :10:29.
when Hoolahan scored the first goal. But then there was the own goal | :10:30. | :10:37.
and a late save by Sweden which meant there was no | :10:38. | :10:40.
clear winner in the end. I would have taken a 90th minute | :10:41. | :10:51.
winner more than scoring when we did. The Republic of Ireland | :10:52. | :10:55.
actually did us proud. They played so well and deserved to win. I will | :10:56. | :11:00.
take it, but I really would have liked the win. I know the next two | :11:01. | :11:03.
games will be tough. So I think a win would have been the perfect | :11:04. | :11:05.
start like. There are two more group matches | :11:06. | :11:09.
to go for the Republic With such colourful and enthusiastic | :11:10. | :11:11.
support, we don't want to miss out on what's happening over | :11:12. | :11:17.
there at the Euros. So if you are in France or know fans | :11:18. | :11:19.
who have travelled over there we'd These are ways of getting in contact | :11:20. | :11:22.
with us on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter with full | :11:23. | :11:27.
coverage on our news online page. A man has been arrested | :11:28. | :11:39.
in connection with the murder of Stephen Carson in Belfast in | :11:40. | :11:41.
February. The victim, who was 28, | :11:42. | :11:44.
was shot in the head at his home in Walmer Street off the Ormeau Road | :11:45. | :11:48.
in the south of the city. He was eating dinner | :11:49. | :11:52.
with his partner and nine-year-old son when a gang carrying a hammer | :11:53. | :11:54.
and a shotgun burst in. The man detained today was arrested | :11:55. | :11:57.
on suspicion of murder. Three other men have already been | :11:58. | :12:00.
in court in connection The police say they believe a man | :12:01. | :12:02.
who was found dead in County Armagh this morning may have died | :12:03. | :12:13.
as a result of a hit and run. The man's body was found | :12:14. | :12:16.
on Shillinghill Road near Markethill The area remains cordoned | :12:17. | :12:18.
off by the police. The Fire Service are trying | :12:19. | :12:26.
to rescue two youths who are stuck They are trapped in the cab | :12:27. | :12:30.
of the crane 50-feet up in the air at a construction site | :12:31. | :12:42.
on Pate's Lane. A specialist rescue team | :12:43. | :12:44.
is working to bring them down. Two women have been arrested | :12:45. | :12:46.
following an assault on a 19-year-old woman in | :12:47. | :12:48.
Londonderry. The attack was on Saturday night | :12:49. | :12:50.
in the Lecky Road area and is being treated | :12:51. | :12:52.
as a sectarian hate crime. The police say the victim | :12:53. | :12:54.
suffered cuts to her head The women being questioned | :12:55. | :12:57.
are aged 19 and 21. The former political talks chairman | :12:58. | :13:04.
Richard Haass has claimed a vote by the UK to leave | :13:05. | :13:06.
the European Union could trigger violence or political deadlock | :13:07. | :13:10.
in Northern Ireland. During a visit to Belfast, | :13:11. | :13:14.
the Taoiseach has repeated his concerns about the potential | :13:15. | :13:20.
consequences of a Brexit. Here's Our Political | :13:21. | :13:22.
Editor Mark Devenport. Richard Haass may have | :13:23. | :13:25.
tried to stay neutral when he was chairing inter-party | :13:26. | :13:27.
talks but on the European referendum, that | :13:28. | :13:29.
is not his approach. On Twitter, the former US | :13:30. | :13:32.
envoy suggested Brexit could trigger political gridlock, | :13:33. | :13:36.
violence or calls for partition. His message did not impress | :13:37. | :13:38.
the First Minister on her way In respect of the fact that it | :13:39. | :13:41.
could cause violence, I think that's quite disgraceful | :13:42. | :13:48.
for anyone to suggest that violence will be a consequence of us | :13:49. | :13:52.
leaving the European Union. The Taoiseach believes the peace | :13:53. | :13:55.
process will continue but thinks the EU support has often been | :13:56. | :13:59.
underestimated and forgotten. Visiting Belfast, he warned that | :14:00. | :14:05.
in the event of a Brexit, there We would certainly try to do | :14:06. | :14:08.
what we could to preserve the common travel area, but believe me, | :14:09. | :14:15.
it's difficult to imagine a situation where there would be no | :14:16. | :14:19.
controls or no checks on the movement of goods, | :14:20. | :14:23.
if the United Kingdom Enda Kenny meets David Cameron | :14:24. | :14:27.
later this week to make a joint Whether you find the Taoiseach | :14:28. | :14:34.
or First Minister's cases more persuasive, you only have ten days | :14:35. | :14:38.
now to make up your minds. The Northern Ireland Environment | :14:39. | :14:51.
Agency is investigating a major fuel spill into the sea off | :14:52. | :14:56.
the County Antrim coast. The manufacturing company | :14:57. | :14:59.
Caterpillar says a control unit at their plan in Larne failed, | :15:00. | :15:01.
leading to 40,000 litres of red diesel running | :15:02. | :15:03.
through a storm drain into the sea. It was part of a bigger | :15:04. | :15:06.
spill on the site. The oil formed a long slick just | :15:07. | :15:10.
offshore at the weekend. The firl says it has employed an | :15:11. | :15:19.
environmental contractor to help with the clean-up. | :15:20. | :15:22.
In memory of the 49 people killed in the terrorist attack in Orlando, | :15:23. | :15:25.
City Hall in Belfast is currently lit in rainbow colours. | :15:26. | :15:28.
A book of condolence was opened there earlier today. | :15:29. | :15:34.
At midnight tonight, the lighting will be changing over | :15:35. | :15:38.
to the colours of the US flag, red, white and blue until dawn. | :15:39. | :15:42.
On BBC Newsline tomorrow evening, a story from Kevin Magee. | :15:43. | :15:47.
A leading County Down businessman who converted two property companies | :15:48. | :15:54.
into charities is being asked to repay millions of pounds. He has | :15:55. | :15:59.
lost control of a major property empire which includes this entire | :16:00. | :16:03.
street in East Belfast and hundreds of homes in West Belfast. I will | :16:04. | :16:07.
have a special report beginning on BBC Radio Ulster in the morning and | :16:08. | :16:12.
I will have more on BBC Newsline at 6.30pm tomorrow evening. | :16:13. | :16:19.
Now Barra Best has the latest forecast. Through the course of the | :16:20. | :16:25.
night, the scattered showers are going to pep up and they will be | :16:26. | :16:29.
with us to begin with tomorrow, but it is an improving picture as we | :16:30. | :16:32.
make our way through the day. Gradually improving, by around lunch | :16:33. | :16:36.
time from the north. But to begin with, a widespread scattering of | :16:37. | :16:40.
showers. The odd heavy one is possible as well. A grey, damp | :16:41. | :16:44.
start, unfortunately. If you are ale travelling tomorrow, it is an | :16:45. | :16:46.
unsettled picture with low pressure in control with the xption of | :16:47. | :16:50.
western and northern areas of Scotland. Here dry with sunshine, | :16:51. | :16:54.
but cloudier elsewhere with a scattering of showers, but | :16:55. | :16:56.
temperatures aren't bad for the time of year. For us, it will brighten up | :16:57. | :17:02.
from the north coast and some sunshine will push in across many | :17:03. | :17:07.
areas by evening time. One or two scattered showers that will linger | :17:08. | :17:10.
across parts of the south and the west. Wednesday, there will be more | :17:11. | :17:14.
scattered showers coming. The odd heavy burst is likely as well. Not | :17:15. | :17:19.
great conditions unfortunately for the Lisburn half-marathon. You will | :17:20. | :17:22.
want to prep yourself for wet weather. Temperatures will be 15 or | :17:23. | :17:27.
16 Celsius. Maybe feeling cooler and blustery at times around the coast | :17:28. | :17:30.
when you factor in the easterly wind. Scattered showers tomorrow and | :17:31. | :17:33.
on Wednesday. One or two in the forecast for Thursday, but the good | :17:34. | :17:36.
news is there is a glimmer of hope by the end of the week. High | :17:37. | :17:39.
pressure is trying to build for Friday and Saturday. If that wins | :17:40. | :17:42.
out, we are expecting dry conditions at least for the beginning of the | :17:43. | :17:44.
weekend. Good night. Our next BBC Newsline | :17:45. | :17:47.
is at 6.25am in the morning | :17:48. | :17:51. |
