Here on BBC One it's time for the news where you are. | :00:00. | :00:00.
Good evening. Welcome to BBC Newsline. | :00:00. | :00:10.
Northern Ireland have won their first match in a major | :00:11. | :00:13.
tournament for 34 years - there were jubilant scenes | :00:14. | :00:17.
as Michael O'Neill's men beat Ukraine 2-0. | :00:18. | :00:21.
Stephen Watson joins me now from Lyon. | :00:22. | :00:22.
I'm sorry, we seem to be having some technical problems with Stephen. | :00:23. | :00:48.
We'll come back to him later, but let's go to Mark Simpson to get the | :00:49. | :01:00.
fans' reaction. We're looking forward to hearing from Stephen | :01:01. | :01:05.
later and seeing those goals, those two amazing goals, which have | :01:06. | :01:08.
propelled Northern Ireland back into the tournament. As we can see it's | :01:09. | :01:15.
been quite a day for the Northern Ireland fans. | :01:16. | :01:21.
It is the moment they had been waiting for. And they were very | :01:22. | :01:31.
quick to analyse what it all meant. We're not going home! | :01:32. | :01:37.
As the fans filtered back from the stadium to the city centre, there | :01:38. | :01:41.
was joy on confined. Unbelievable result. | :01:42. | :01:49.
I came all the way from Vietnam, it cost me ?1000, it was worth every | :01:50. | :01:55.
penny. I can't believe it. How are you feeling? | :01:56. | :02:02.
Absolutely fantastic. It is a feeling people felt 30 years ago in | :02:03. | :02:07.
Spain. What it must be like back home, I'm sure they are just as | :02:08. | :02:14.
happy. What is your message to the people back home? We are not coming | :02:15. | :02:21.
home! What was the difference to the match in Poland? Attack, attack! We | :02:22. | :02:31.
have the quality. Believe, like the fans do. Aaron Hughes' brother Ian, | :02:32. | :02:41.
how are you feeling? If I said "So good, so good, so good." Paul | :02:42. | :02:51.
Marshall, Ulster Rugby player. What did you think? I thought the effort | :02:52. | :02:55.
all the players bought in, just the energy around the pitch. They handed | :02:56. | :03:02.
the Ukrainian team. We're not going home, we're not going home! The | :03:03. | :03:11.
party in Lyon has only just begun. And that party is taking place on | :03:12. | :03:17.
the other side of the fan zone here, in the centre of Lyon. If I was at | :03:18. | :03:22.
the other side, you probably wouldn't be able to hear me or see | :03:23. | :03:26.
me. It is going to be quite a night here. | :03:27. | :03:31.
Stephen Watson is finally with me. Stephen, what an amazing match. | :03:32. | :03:39.
Absolutely, good evening. Not since Spain in 1982 have Ireland born at a | :03:40. | :03:50.
major final. It was an amazingly proud evening, and a night when the | :03:51. | :03:55.
manager once again proved his tactical pedigree. He made five | :03:56. | :04:01.
changes to the starting line-up including dropping Kyle Lafferty, | :04:02. | :04:03.
but his plan worked and he masterminded a superb victory. This | :04:04. | :04:08.
was a match that Northern Ireland simply could not afford to lose. | :04:09. | :04:15.
The added pressure of playing in front of the biggest ever cried. And | :04:16. | :04:21.
they got onto a fast start. Craig Cathcart almost gave them a first | :04:22. | :04:25.
half lead. Four minutes into the second half came the breakthrough... | :04:26. | :04:31.
Gareth McAuley heading Northern Ireland into the lead. Ecstasy. | :04:32. | :04:45.
As the rain got heavier, goalkeeper Michael McGovern was forced to keep | :04:46. | :04:56.
Ukraine at bay. Then a dramatic twist, as a thunder and lightning | :04:57. | :05:00.
storm and hailstones caused a delay. So in the players were back on the | :05:01. | :05:06.
pitch. And before the end, Northern Ireland had another brilliant goal | :05:07. | :05:15.
to celebrate. Lyle McGinn sending the 18,000 Northern Ireland fans | :05:16. | :05:23.
wild. Unforgettable scenes. An unbelievable night. -- Niall McGinn. | :05:24. | :05:28.
You see the response of the crowd, what it meant to everyone. It wasn't | :05:29. | :05:35.
an easy team to pick. But I felt we needed to get more energy, more | :05:36. | :05:40.
running power in. It is a great victory for the squad, they all | :05:41. | :05:45.
played their part. That victory was for everyone today. How proud you as | :05:46. | :05:54.
captain? There was a lot said after the first game, someone -- some of | :05:55. | :06:03.
it a little bit harsh, but we set the tone today early on and created | :06:04. | :06:08.
a number of good chances. I thought we fully deserved the victory, and | :06:09. | :06:12.
it sets us up nicely for the next game to go and enjoy it. For the two | :06:13. | :06:18.
goal-scorers, a place in the Northern Ireland history books. The | :06:19. | :06:26.
atmosphere's unreal. It's about the best thing in the world, to be | :06:27. | :06:30.
honest with you. It's difficult to describe it at the minute. The | :06:31. | :06:46.
feeling was absolutely incredible. It means as much to me as everybody | :06:47. | :06:52.
out there. And everybody who has come to support us. A bit like | :06:53. | :07:00.
Windsor Park there with the weather! Yes, with the thousands who came | :07:01. | :07:05.
through the gate, we want to thank them, and we know they will be back | :07:06. | :07:10.
home and all over the world. Showing the support they have, we can only | :07:11. | :07:12.
appreciate their time and effort. Well, in the other game in Northern | :07:13. | :07:30.
Ireland's game tonight, Germany drew 0-0 with Poland. Northern Ireland | :07:31. | :07:34.
are now guaranteed to finish third in the group, which may be enough to | :07:35. | :07:39.
qualify for knockout stage, but they may have to go to Paris next Tuesday | :07:40. | :07:45.
and get a draw, or better, with the world champions Germany. But for | :07:46. | :07:48.
now, Northern Ireland are just going to savour this very famous night. | :07:49. | :07:55.
Let's go back to Mark Simpson. Amid those jubilant scenes, some sad | :07:56. | :08:01.
news, we are hearing that a Northern Ireland fan died in the stadium? | :08:02. | :08:09.
Yes, very sad news. A 62-year-old man, believed to be from Belfast, | :08:10. | :08:14.
died in the stands during this -- during the first half. We're being | :08:15. | :08:20.
told by the Irish Football Association Chief Executive that the | :08:21. | :08:23.
team and all the officials have their condolences to the family of | :08:24. | :08:30.
the man. Patrick Nelson says the death of one of our fine sports | :08:31. | :08:35.
result of a football match into perspective, and in the last couple | :08:36. | :08:39.
of minutes the Football Association of Ireland have also released a | :08:40. | :08:42.
statement offering their condolences tonight to the man's family, and I | :08:43. | :08:47.
know all the fans here tonight would echo those sentiments as well. | :08:48. | :08:52.
Earlier, hundreds of fans braved the weather to watch the match | :08:53. | :08:55.
Our reporter Kevin Sharkey was live on air as the second goal went in. | :08:56. | :09:04.
There are thousands of fans... And there you have the reaction. | :09:05. | :09:17.
Well, there you have it, live on BBC Newsline, the fans' reaction here at | :09:18. | :09:25.
the fan zone at the Titanic Quarter in Belfast. | :09:26. | :09:30.
The right place at the right time! Some of the days of the news. -- | :09:31. | :09:35.
some of the day's other news. A doctor who pleaded | :09:36. | :09:46.
guilty to falsifying clinical trials on patients | :09:47. | :09:47.
with sleeping disorders has been remanded in custody | :09:48. | :09:49.
until he's sentenced. The offences took place | :09:50. | :09:51.
between 2007 and 2008. All the offences took place | :09:52. | :09:53.
at Dr Hugh McGoldrick's GP Some ten patients were unwittingly | :09:54. | :09:56.
enrolled in a clinical Most of them would have been deemed | :09:57. | :09:59.
unsuitable for the trial. It has been insisted he did not do | :10:00. | :10:08.
this for financial gain, But he stood to make ?20,000 - | :10:09. | :10:11.
money he has undertaken to repay. Previously the court had heard | :10:12. | :10:15.
Dr Hugh McGoldrick had submitted He said this was because they were | :10:16. | :10:18.
elderly and would have been uncomfortable using | :10:19. | :10:24.
the dedicated phone system. However, today his lawyer accepted | :10:25. | :10:29.
he had made up the information The lawyer said this was the lowest | :10:30. | :10:32.
point of the doctor's life. The doctor apologised | :10:33. | :10:37.
to a wide range of people, including the patients | :10:38. | :10:39.
and the drug companies involved. A controversial drilling | :10:40. | :10:43.
operation in a County Antrim forest has ended - | :10:44. | :10:51.
apparently without finding any oil. The company, InfraStrata, | :10:52. | :10:58.
said it was disappointed by its findings at the site | :10:59. | :11:00.
at Woodburn Forest Our environment correspondent | :11:01. | :11:02.
Conor Macauley reports. After months of controversy, protest | :11:03. | :11:18.
and round-the-clock policing causing -- costing ?2000 in overtime, the | :11:19. | :11:23.
controversial explorer tree well hit water, not oil. The company said it | :11:24. | :11:28.
was disappointed by the results and would cap it and leave. The drill | :11:29. | :11:36.
site on land leased from Northern Ireland Water had lead to sustained | :11:37. | :11:41.
protests from people who claimed the project threatened the waters. | :11:42. | :11:45.
Something Northern Ireland Water had consistently denied. Protesters were | :11:46. | :11:47.
delighted by the shutting down of the drill. Friends of the Earth said | :11:48. | :11:56.
"The earth had spoken". The Green Party said company claims of 25 | :11:57. | :12:00.
million barrels of oil had been utter nonsense. | :12:01. | :12:04.
The family of a man who was struck by lightning last week | :12:05. | :12:06.
have thanked everyone for their continuing support. | :12:07. | :12:08.
36-year-old George Allen was injured, as were two | :12:09. | :12:11.
of his children as he collected them from a school in | :12:12. | :12:13.
It's nine days since the moment the lightning struck outside this | :12:14. | :12:27.
primary School. Sharon Allen and her family have thank the community for | :12:28. | :12:31.
their thoughts, support and prayers. In a statement they say could -- in | :12:32. | :12:35.
a statement they said: parents and teachers used a | :12:36. | :12:57.
defibrillator on father and son before paramedics arrived. The | :12:58. | :13:01.
family has called for such devices to be available at every school. Mr | :13:02. | :13:06.
Allen remains in a critical but stable condition at the Ulster | :13:07. | :13:07.
hospital in Dundonald. Two small primary schools | :13:08. | :13:12.
in County Londonderry are set to make history by becoming | :13:13. | :13:14.
the first to be jointly run by both the Protestant | :13:15. | :13:17.
and Catholic churches. The staff and boards of governors | :13:18. | :13:18.
of the schools are behind the move, and parents of pupils are now | :13:19. | :13:21.
being consulted about the plans. Our education correspondent | :13:22. | :13:25.
Robbie Meredith has more. Two small schools - | :13:26. | :13:28.
one hugely significant step. Desertmartin Primary is a Church | :13:29. | :13:33.
of Ireland school. Knocknagin, also in the County | :13:34. | :13:36.
Londonderry village, They've been sharing classes | :13:37. | :13:39.
and trips for a decade. Now, staff and governors want them | :13:40. | :13:44.
to go one step further, merging to become Northern Ireland's | :13:45. | :13:48.
first joint Protestant Parents are now being consulted | :13:49. | :13:50.
about the plans, but they're The Council for Catholic Maintained | :13:51. | :13:59.
Schools says they are very supportive of the project, | :14:00. | :14:08.
as is the body which represents the education interests of the main | :14:09. | :14:11.
Protestant churches. I think the churches want | :14:12. | :14:13.
to preserve high-quality education, and they can see that can be done | :14:14. | :14:16.
very well in a faith ethos and on a basis where Christian | :14:17. | :14:19.
values are being maintained. We have had integrated schools | :14:20. | :14:23.
here for a long time. How does a joint faith schools | :14:24. | :14:31.
differ from that? It will be clear this | :14:32. | :14:36.
is a Christian faith-based ethos. If you walk into the school, | :14:37. | :14:39.
you will know you are The governance will be different | :14:40. | :14:41.
from an integrated school. But there will be a faith-based | :14:42. | :14:46.
committee within the school There will be a religious education | :14:47. | :14:48.
provision, that will That is the key difference; it | :14:49. | :14:51.
will be very much the Christian faith that is central | :14:52. | :14:57.
to the running of the school. Ultimately, the parents and then | :14:58. | :14:59.
the Education Minister will decide But if they're successful, | :15:00. | :15:05.
others are sure to follow. More on the European Championship | :15:06. | :15:16.
now, and the Republic of Ireland take on Belgium | :15:17. | :15:18.
on Saturday in Bordeaux. Earlier today assistant manager | :15:19. | :15:20.
Roy Keane was critical of unsettled I think he's an outstanding player. | :15:21. | :15:36.
But if you'd asked me if I was playing with anybody, and they were | :15:37. | :15:40.
constantly saying they wanted to leave, and they had a bad attitude | :15:41. | :15:45.
to training, I would kick them in training. But I've kind of done that | :15:46. | :15:50.
with most players, even lads who didn't want to leave. | :15:51. | :15:56.
Is it an advantage with Ireland, who may be more confident after the | :15:57. | :16:00.
draw... Are you trying to suggest we are the | :16:01. | :16:04.
favourites for the game? I think you've been drinking! | :16:05. | :16:07.
Rugby now, and Craig Gilroy and Stuart Olding are among five | :16:08. | :16:09.
changes to the Ireland rugby team for the second test | :16:10. | :16:11.
against South Africa in Johannesburg on Saturday. | :16:12. | :16:13.
There are seven Ulster players in the starting 15. | :16:14. | :16:21.
Play has been suspended again at golf's US Open at Oakmont, | :16:22. | :16:24.
Rory McIlroy is three over through 12. | :16:25. | :16:30.
Andrew Landry leads on three under after 17. | :16:31. | :16:35.
Good evening. It has been a great, damp and miserable day. But it is | :16:36. | :16:53.
going to stop tomorrow. Overnight tonight though we keep that blanket | :16:54. | :16:57.
of cloud sitting over us and the light rain continues. The cloud | :16:58. | :17:02.
keeps the can -- temperatures on the mild side. By the time we get to | :17:03. | :17:06.
tomorrow morning we keep the cloud to begin with, then it is an | :17:07. | :17:10.
increasingly bright day if a little on the breezy side. This is what you | :17:11. | :17:14.
will be waking up to tomorrow morning. A few light showers as we | :17:15. | :17:18.
go through the day, but increasingly things will brighten up. By no means | :17:19. | :17:23.
the worst of the weather. The temperatures across England and | :17:24. | :17:27.
Wales are a little bit warmer. That will set of a few short sharp | :17:28. | :17:32.
showers. Much more persistent rain across the East coast of Scotland. | :17:33. | :17:36.
But for us, and increasingly dry picture as we go through Friday | :17:37. | :17:39.
afternoon, some decent breaks in the cloud. But may be feeling a little | :17:40. | :17:47.
cooler than that in that northerly breeze. As we head towards the | :17:48. | :17:51.
weekend we have this high pressure building in, which will settle our | :17:52. | :17:57.
weather down for a day or two, before these fronts spoil the party. | :17:58. | :18:02.
The weekend starts of them on a reasonable note, it will be drier | :18:03. | :18:06.
with some sunny spells before the rain starts to return towards the | :18:07. | :18:12.
start of next week. So Saturday is looking like a decent enough day, | :18:13. | :18:15.
the best of the brightness across the East in the morning. It will | :18:16. | :18:20.
help the temperature up to 16 or 17 degrees. And by the time we get to | :18:21. | :18:24.
the end of the weekend, it's a bit more unsettled but at least the | :18:25. | :18:25.
temperatures are on the rise. who want to show us how good they | :18:26. | :18:27.
are in the kitchen. Many of them can sing, dance, act. | :18:28. | :18:37.
We don't care about that. | :18:38. | :18:42. |
