I'll be back with more updates throughout the night.

:00:00.:00:09.

Polling stations in the historic referendum on whether the UK should

:00:10.:00:13.

stay in or leave the European Union have closed.

:00:14.:00:22.

The outcome of the Northern Ireland Paul will be announced at the

:00:23.:00:26.

Titanic centre in Belfast. Mark Devenport joins me

:00:27.:00:29.

live from now. Mark, is there any indication

:00:30.:00:30.

of what the turn out has been The best guess at this stage is that

:00:31.:00:38.

turnout will be higher than the 55% we saw in last month's Assembly

:00:39.:00:43.

poll. We are getting different indications from around Northern

:00:44.:00:47.

Ireland. Some places in Belfast and Londonderry have had a turnout of

:00:48.:00:51.

more than 70%, whereas other places have been lower, for instance in Mid

:00:52.:00:56.

Ulster where there was a turnout of more like 48%. It is all go here in

:00:57.:01:00.

the Titanic centre and the other counting centres around Northern

:01:01.:01:04.

Ireland. A lot of ballot boxes brought in in the last two moments,

:01:05.:01:08.

and the counting staff are verifying the ballot papers, that the right

:01:09.:01:12.

number are inside the boxes, and then they will get on with the

:01:13.:01:16.

counting soon after that. Looks busy indeed. When we know which way it

:01:17.:01:22.

has gone? We will have declarations from each of the 18 parliamentary

:01:23.:01:25.

constituencies, which should come throughout the night. We are

:01:26.:01:28.

thinking the earliest might be some time like 12:30am, and the last

:01:29.:01:34.

should be possibly around 4am this morning. We should have a good idea

:01:35.:01:39.

of how Northern Ireland has voted in this referendum by probably around

:01:40.:01:44.

4:15am, when we are expecting the declaration here in the Titanic

:01:45.:01:47.

centre. The overall UK result will probably be later than that,

:01:48.:01:56.

probably about 7am or thereabouts. Mark, thank you.

:01:57.:01:58.

The family of a woman who died from a brain injury

:01:59.:02:00.

a day after telling police her head had been banged off a wall

:02:01.:02:03.

is considering legal action against the PSNI.

:02:04.:02:06.

Two police officers have been disciplined for not seeking medical

:02:07.:02:09.

attention for the 36-year-old when she was taken into custody.

:02:10.:02:13.

Our home affairs correspondent Vincent Kearney reports.

:02:14.:02:19.

Mairead McCallion told police several times over a number of years

:02:20.:02:22.

that she had been a victim of domestic violence.

:02:23.:02:26.

When officers arrived to deal with a disturbance at a house in Omagh,

:02:27.:02:34.

she said her partner had grabbed her by the hair and banged

:02:35.:02:37.

Her partner was arrested and she was taken to Omagh

:02:38.:02:42.

But the officers she had spoken to did

:02:43.:02:45.

not tell the doctor about the head injury.

:02:46.:02:47.

Hours later, she was sick in the back of a police

:02:48.:02:50.

car while being driven to a friend's house.

:02:51.:02:51.

She was rushed to hospital but died the following day.

:02:52.:02:54.

Her sister says the family is deeply distressed about

:02:55.:02:56.

She was a very vulnerable young women, and I

:02:57.:03:01.

think at the most vulnerable point in her life, she was not taken

:03:02.:03:04.

When she reported that she had a head injury,

:03:05.:03:09.

she should have got urgent medical attention.

:03:10.:03:14.

As a family we are left wondering and will always wonder now,

:03:15.:03:17.

A report from the Police Ombudsman says two officers failed to

:03:18.:03:28.

follow PSNI procedures for dealing with someone with a head injury.

:03:29.:03:31.

The officers said they had assumed that

:03:32.:03:33.

she would tell the police doctor about her injury, but the report

:03:34.:03:38.

says that they had a duty to make the doctor aware of what

:03:39.:03:41.

no blame should be apportioned here to Mairead McCallion.

:03:42.:03:47.

She was in very difficult circumstances, she had been

:03:48.:03:49.

assaulted, and obviously that was impacting on her, so it was the

:03:50.:03:52.

The man she said assaulted her was charged with

:03:53.:03:59.

murder, but the charges were later dropped.

:04:00.:04:01.

Her family are now considering legal action against the PSNI.

:04:02.:04:08.

The PSNI has accepted a recommendation from the ombudsman to

:04:09.:04:13.

introduce a new policy for dealing with people who report a head

:04:14.:04:17.

injury. In future, officers will be instructed to take the person

:04:18.:04:20.

directly to hospital and are not stable base station. -- not to a

:04:21.:04:25.

police station. A Euro fanzone for supporters will

:04:26.:04:30.

be set up at Boucher Playing Fields in South Belfast for both

:04:31.:04:33.

the Northern Ireland and Republic of Ireland's

:04:34.:04:35.

matches this weekend. It followed a clash

:04:36.:04:37.

with the Belsonic Festival which ruled out the original venue

:04:38.:04:39.

at the Titanic slipway. This afternoon the Boucher site

:04:40.:04:41.

was named as the alternative. Fans will now be able to congregate

:04:42.:04:44.

there for Northern Ireland's match against Wales on Saturday

:04:45.:04:46.

and for the Republic's game Having a fanzone, it will be an

:04:47.:04:56.

thinkable not to have won here in Belfast, and I am delighted his

:04:57.:05:00.

provided you're now. Fans enjoy coming together, even though you're

:05:01.:05:04.

only cheering on a screen, you are doing it together and showing her

:05:05.:05:09.

enthusiasm. -- showing your enthusiasm.

:05:10.:05:10.

Here's Barra Best with a look at what the weather has

:05:11.:05:13.

Some scattered showers tonight, one or two on the heavy night, but not

:05:14.:05:24.

especially chilly. The pressure will remain in control tomorrow, meaning

:05:25.:05:27.

more scattered showers. To begin with not a bad start to the day.

:05:28.:05:31.

Plenty of dry weather and sunshine as well, but by the morning, those

:05:32.:05:36.

showers will begin to come in from the Atlantic, affecting almost any

:05:37.:05:40.

work across Ireland. The date some heavy downpours as well. A similar

:05:41.:05:50.

picture further north. The exception may be of the south-east of England,

:05:51.:05:55.

are largely dry and warm afternoon. For us the wind begins to comment on

:05:56.:05:58.

the north-west. It will feel cooler and pressure especially towards the

:05:59.:06:03.

north coast. 14 or 15 Celsius. And a bit warmer. Keep an eye out for some

:06:04.:06:08.

heavy showers. There could be surface flooding on the roads with

:06:09.:06:11.

undermining perhaps breaking out through the afternoon. It is a bit

:06:12.:06:14.

of an improving picture for Saturday. Not as many showers

:06:15.:06:17.

around, but some wet weather. It will be rather cloudy. The link cool

:06:18.:06:26.

with those north-westerly winds. More in the way of sunny spells

:06:27.:06:27.

expected from Andy. -- for Monday. Our next BBC Newsline

:06:28.:06:33.
