reported that there were several people believed to | :00:00. | :00:08.
The new Secretary of State James Brokenshire says it's | :00:09. | :00:12.
vital that Northern Ireland's interests, including border issues, | :00:13. | :00:13.
are fully protected and advanced during the upcoming | :00:14. | :00:15.
Mr Brokenshire says he's looking forward to working closely | :00:16. | :00:19.
with the Stormont Executive, the Irish Government and the whole | :00:20. | :00:21.
community in Northern Ireland to build a brighter, | :00:22. | :00:33.
Theresa Villiers quit the government earlier today after turning down | :00:34. | :00:37.
Our political correspondent Enda McClafferty has more. | :00:38. | :00:39.
Meet Northern Ireland's new secretary of state. | :00:40. | :00:42.
James Brokenshire was summoned to number | :00:43. | :00:43.
ten this evening to be given his new post. | :00:44. | :00:57.
and Sidcup in east London for the | :00:58. | :00:59.
Born in Essex, he has been MP for Old Bexley | :01:00. | :01:01.
and Sidcup in east London for the | :01:02. | :01:03.
Married with ten Lee magnify children. | :01:04. | :01:05.
You may be new Labour is no stranger to Theresa | :01:06. | :01:08.
May, he worked with her in the Home Office. | :01:09. | :01:10.
One look at his CV and you see his specialist subject is | :01:11. | :01:13.
counterterrorism, and also involved in overseeing the work of MI5. | :01:14. | :01:19.
During the Olympics in London, into government he was one of those | :01:20. | :01:21.
charged with the security of the operation. | :01:22. | :01:23.
He's also very familiar with the National Crime Agency, | :01:24. | :01:25.
He used to oversee it, so he should commit you | :01:26. | :01:30.
would think, be well equipped to deal with our security | :01:31. | :01:32.
But perhaps most crucially, he, unlike his | :01:33. | :01:38.
predecessor, Theresa Villiers, voted to remain in the EU, and just | :01:39. | :01:40.
yesterday said he could see no reason that the border arrangements | :01:41. | :01:43.
have empathy for people here who have made it clear they want to | :01:44. | :01:52.
remain in the EU, and there will be a interesting dynamic between the | :01:53. | :01:56.
Back four years, Theresa Villiers marched into | :01:57. | :02:04.
I didn't know what to expect from the reshuffle, and | :02:05. | :02:13.
really thrilled at being given this job to do by the Prime Minister. | :02:14. | :02:16.
But this time the reshuffle to a different result that | :02:17. | :02:21.
There was no seat at the Cabinet table, instead she | :02:22. | :02:26.
was offered a role at the Home Office which she turned down. | :02:27. | :02:29.
She broke the news on her Facebook page. | :02:30. | :02:33.
I think she got to know the issues very well and is | :02:34. | :02:46.
more than that she got to know personalities | :02:47. | :02:50.
as well and as I say I wish her all the very best | :02:51. | :02:53.
for the future and I am sure she will be back in another role | :02:54. | :02:56.
in the party in some course. | :02:57. | :02:58.
During that time, Theresa Villiers faced many | :02:59. | :02:59.
challenges, not least dealing with the political fallout | :03:00. | :03:02.
which almost brought down Stormont. | :03:03. | :03:07.
She was involved in the Stormont house talks, | :03:08. | :03:12.
I believe this is a good day for Northern Ireland and it | :03:13. | :03:16.
marks a fresh start for Northern Ireland's | :03:17. | :03:18.
But Theresa Villiers took a very different approach from her | :03:19. | :03:27.
predecessors, and sometimes accused of being detached. | :03:28. | :03:29.
She was completely vacant, very cold and remote manner. | :03:30. | :03:31.
She didn't actually develop any relationship with any of the leading | :03:32. | :03:35.
political figures here, she was too close to the DUP. | :03:36. | :03:39.
She didn't develop close relationships with any | :03:40. | :03:41.
individuals, in the DUP, and really in the last three years, | :03:42. | :03:45.
We're still waiting for a solution to parades, flags, | :03:46. | :03:51.
They are waiting for him as a sizeable inbox -- there, | :03:52. | :04:01.
Earlier I spoke to BBC London's political reporter Susana Mendonsa | :04:02. | :04:07.
and I asked her what we can expect from the new Secretary of State. | :04:08. | :04:14.
James Brokenshire was someone who very much | :04:15. | :04:15.
believed in remaining in the EU, | :04:16. | :04:19.
and so, considering that he's now going into a role of a | :04:20. | :04:24.
Northern Ireland Secretary, a place, one of the few places in the UK that | :04:25. | :04:27.
voted to remain in the EU, I suspect that will have been | :04:28. | :04:33.
a factor really in Theresa May choosing that post | :04:34. | :04:36.
for him and to replace Theresa Villiers, who of course somebody | :04:37. | :04:39.
was campaigning very much to leave the European Union, | :04:40. | :04:41.
so his focus will be on trying to maintain the union. | :04:42. | :04:44.
We know that Theresa May wants the union | :04:45. | :04:46.
to continue, doesn't want is the break-up | :04:47. | :04:49.
Nothing in particular at Northern Ireland in his CV? | :04:50. | :05:00.
There is nothing particularly of Northern | :05:01. | :05:07.
Ireland, but in terms of his backrground | :05:08. | :05:09.
before he can in MP, he worked in the legal profession, | :05:10. | :05:11.
He has been focused on home affairs during his | :05:12. | :05:14.
entire career, pretty much, as an MP, and so, nothing | :05:15. | :05:17.
specifically about Northern Ireland, | :05:18. | :05:18.
but certainly he is somebody who Theresa May trusts, | :05:19. | :05:20.
and he is someone who gets on with the job. | :05:21. | :05:22.
The border issue potentially will become a big factor. | :05:23. | :05:32.
What is his style, is he a people person? | :05:33. | :05:34.
He is, he works in a collegiate way with | :05:35. | :05:36.
people around him, and quite a mild mannered | :05:37. | :05:38.
individual so somebody that | :05:39. | :05:39.
I think would work well in terms of negotiations, | :05:40. | :05:41.
with different groups, and certainly in the role in | :05:42. | :05:44.
Northern Ireland that will be his focus, I'm sure. | :05:45. | :05:48.
The choice of Secretary of State is the first big decision | :05:49. | :05:51.
about Northern Ireland that the | :05:52. | :05:52.
BBC Newsline's Mark Simpson has been taking a closer look | :05:53. | :05:55.
at Theresa May and getting the views of people here. | :05:56. | :05:58.
The last time she came to Northern Ireland, | :05:59. | :06:03.
I've never had a hair brush with my photograph | :06:04. | :06:11.
He was still in charge at the time, and she was trying to | :06:12. | :06:21.
avoid Brexit, rather than make it work. | :06:22. | :06:28.
I think Northern Ireland will be better off, I'd say, within | :06:29. | :06:32.
Yesterday it was a very different union she focused on, | :06:33. | :06:36.
in her first speech as Prime Minister. | :06:37. | :06:37.
but the full title of my party is the Conservative and Unionist party, | :06:38. | :06:43.
and that word Unionist is very important to me. | :06:44. | :06:48.
Events in London are being watched closely in Belfast. | :06:49. | :06:51.
So, what's the initial assessment of Theresa May? | :06:52. | :06:56.
I don't think she's great news | :06:57. | :07:00.
London is one thing but | :07:01. | :07:02.
Theresa May, what do you think? Don't know. | :07:03. | :07:18.
She owns racehorses, so she will take no | :07:19. | :07:21.
I do honestly think she will do a good | :07:22. | :07:28.
I don't trust her for a start, I don't trust | :07:29. | :07:32.
I think it is good to have somebody in charge, | :07:33. | :07:36.
because it is being a bit of kind of where are we going? | :07:37. | :07:39.
now a good strong voice from a good strong woman, and let's wait and | :07:40. | :07:42.
She's going to be busy. Mark Simpson, BBC newsline. | :07:43. | :07:47.
Downing Street says the new Prime Minister spoke | :07:48. | :07:49.
to both Arlene Foster and Martin McGuinness earlier today. | :07:50. | :07:52.
Mrs May told them both that there should be ongoing engagement | :07:53. | :07:55.
with the Northern Ireland Executive about the UK leaving the EU. | :07:56. | :07:59.
The Taoiseach Enda Kenny spoke to the Prime Minister | :08:00. | :08:02.
Mr Kenny said she has agreed to build on the strong relationship | :08:03. | :08:07.

The Western Trust says one man has been seriously injured | :08:15. | :08:19.
and has been taken to the South West | :08:20. | :08:21.
A Belfast woman has been convicted of posting menacing messages | :08:22. | :08:28.
Anne Bothwell, who's 53, and from Ashmore Street, | :08:29. | :08:33.
posted the comments on the Protestant Coalition's | :08:34. | :08:36.
They referred to both Muslims and Dr Raied Al-Wazzan, | :08:37. | :08:44.
a senior figure in the Muslim community here. | :08:45. | :08:46.
Dr Al-Wazzan told the court that some of the messages caused him | :08:47. | :08:49.
to fear for his life and for his family's safety. | :08:50. | :08:52.
Bothwell will be sentenced next month. | :08:53. | :08:54.
A man had a knife held to his face during a robbery in West Belfast | :08:55. | :08:58.
He woke up to find two men in his bedroom in Glenshane Gardens. | :08:59. | :09:05.
They demanded money and then stole a laptop | :09:06. | :09:07.
as well as a mobile phone and a car. | :09:08. | :09:11.
Game of Thrones has received the most nominations for this | :09:12. | :09:14.
across Northern Ireland. is filmed in locations | :09:15. | :09:22.
Rory McIlroy is six shots behind leader American Phil Mickelson | :09:23. | :09:27.
after the first round of the Open Golf Championship | :09:28. | :09:29.
Darren Clarke is two shots further back with Graeme McDowell | :09:30. | :09:35.
Room in the last time Rory McIlroy played in an open he won here in | :09:36. | :09:49.
2014. Before missing last year through injury. At the start of | :09:50. | :09:54.
today, he had much expectation. It didn't take him long to find his | :09:55. | :10:05.
touch. Shops like this help produce four birdies in the early part of | :10:06. | :10:09.
his round and give him a share of the lead. McEnroe was as appointed | :10:10. | :10:17.
to drop three shots into holes. But went on to pick up another birdie | :10:18. | :10:23.
for another solid start. After his round Michael Wright responded to | :10:24. | :10:25.
criticism about comments made earlier this week regarding his | :10:26. | :10:30.
inclusion in the MPEG that wacko golf was like inclusion in the | :10:31. | :10:34.
Olympics and is in response evil growing sport. I think golf is a | :10:35. | :10:40.
great thing to instil values in kids, I am a pastor of the PJ Junior | :10:41. | :10:46.
League, and I do some stuff in the States do, I feel like I have used | :10:47. | :10:52.
my 's success in golf and a positive way in the community, so no regrets | :10:53. | :10:56.
about where I stand on certain things, and I wish I would have | :10:57. | :10:59.
elaborated a bit more on what I said. People may think it's wrong, | :11:00. | :11:03.
and I have spent seven years trying to please everyone, but I figured | :11:04. | :11:06.
out that I can't really do that, so may as well be true to myself. So | :11:07. | :11:12.
Michael Roy is unrepentant about his Olympic views, but for now he's | :11:13. | :11:15.
simply focusing on trying win major number five. | :11:16. | :11:17.

Here's Angie with the weather forecast. | :11:32. | :11:42.
Hello, good evening. At least we had a little bit of a break from the | :11:43. | :11:48.
shelves today, but the cloud has been moving in to being spells of | :11:49. | :11:52.
rain through the evening and through tonight. Some of it persistent, some | :11:53. | :11:56.
of it heavy as well, particularly towards the north coast, but | :11:57. | :11:58.
certainly not a cold night, anything, mild and muggy, moisture | :11:59. | :12:04.
in the air making temperatures no lower in most places than 12 or 13. | :12:05. | :12:09.
Tomorrow awards in the air still, despite being cloudy and breezy, and | :12:10. | :12:13.
damp for the morning, a wet start early on, heavy burst of rain moving | :12:14. | :12:19.
away, and we started to dry weather moving in from the south. That dry | :12:20. | :12:22.
weather follows across the public Ireland as well, and meanwhile that | :12:23. | :12:27.
wet and windy weather moves into Scotland, with heavy burst of rain | :12:28. | :12:31.
here, into northern England's two. This news from Wales. It is not a | :12:32. | :12:36.
cloud over on itself, but only a bit of rain here, lots of dry weather, | :12:37. | :12:42.
warm and muggy, highs of 21. In Northern Ireland, we might get the | :12:43. | :12:46.
odd bright spell in the east, highs of 21 and 22 in some eastern areas | :12:47. | :12:51.
but some more cloud than sunshine, and rain moving in as we head | :12:52. | :12:55.
through the latter part of the day, initially patchy and will turn quite | :12:56. | :13:00.
persistent. This next batch of rain is behind a cold front, so not | :13:01. | :13:05.
particularly cold behind as it is July, but feeling fresh into the | :13:06. | :13:10.
weekend. Breezy, variable often, some sunny info rules, and some | :13:11. | :13:15.
scattered showers at times as well. That's it for now, our next BBC | :13:16. | :13:19.
newsline is at 6:25am in the morning. You can also keep | :13:20. | :13:24.
up-to-date with news online. From everyone on the BBC newsline team, | :13:25. | :13:26.
thanks for watching. Bye-bye. | :13:27. | :13:28. |
