People from here caught up in the horrific events in Nice last | :00:07. | :00:10.
night have been speaking of their terror and panic. | :00:11. | :00:12.
The attack on the city's Bastille Day celebrations left 84 | :00:13. | :00:17.
dead and scores injured, including an Irish man who is said | :00:18. | :00:20.
Fireworks on a sunny summer evening in Nice. This couple were running | :00:21. | :00:41.
for their lives, with thousands of others. I look up the street and the | :00:42. | :00:47.
next thing I saw was this lorry coming down. The promenade was | :00:48. | :00:53.
jam-packed with people. This lorry just mounted the curb, across the | :00:54. | :01:00.
street from us. And the next thing, all you could hear was crying and | :01:01. | :01:05.
shouting and screaming. I have never seen fear like it in all my life and | :01:06. | :01:11.
probably never will again. It was the softest of targets for an attack | :01:12. | :01:16.
- families with children, locals and tourists, packed tightly together | :01:17. | :01:21.
along the promenade, as a man drove a 20 tonne lorry directly at the | :01:22. | :01:26.
crowd, killing indiscriminately. This Belfast business person was | :01:27. | :01:32.
eating in a hotel restaurant nearby. People were jumping all over the | :01:33. | :01:36.
place, pandemonium, people running up and down. People were not sure | :01:37. | :01:41.
what was going on, until a few minutes later, when we were led to | :01:42. | :01:45.
believe it was a terrorist attack holeable with direct flights from | :01:46. | :01:48.
Belfast and Dublin, Nice is a popular destination for families | :01:49. | :01:53.
like this one from Ballyclare. They were leaving the beach after the | :01:54. | :01:56.
fireworks when they realised something was terribly wrong. We | :01:57. | :02:00.
crossed the road and all of a sudden we heard, everybody started | :02:01. | :02:05.
shouting, running, screaming, people will hold their children and crying. | :02:06. | :02:10.
Basically I grabbed our children and we just started running, following | :02:11. | :02:15.
the crowd. We were all terrified. The death toll now stands at 84. The | :02:16. | :02:19.
Irish government says it is concerned that an Irishman has been | :02:20. | :02:24.
caught up in the attack. One British national has also been injured. | :02:25. | :02:28.
Airlines have urged any holiday-makers who want to change | :02:29. | :02:32.
their plans to contact them. But one woman from Belfast who was on the | :02:33. | :02:35.
beach last night when the attack happened says the city is safe. It | :02:36. | :02:41.
has not put me off staying here. We are here until Tuesday and I am not | :02:42. | :02:46.
making any plans to go home early. I would say for anyone coming out | :02:47. | :02:52.
here, don't let it put you off. There is a strong police presence | :02:53. | :02:55.
and they are taking every precaution they can. Franz Hazlett tired three | :02:56. | :02:59.
days of national mourning, as police and security services begin the task | :03:00. | :03:04.
of working out how and why this attack was able to take place. -- | :03:05. | :03:06.
France has declared. Well, this evening, | :03:07. | :03:08.
Belfast City Hall is lit up in the colours of the French flag | :03:09. | :03:11.
as a mark of solidarity. And some of those who witnessed | :03:12. | :03:13.
the terrible scenes on the French Riviera last night | :03:14. | :03:16.
have been returning home to Ireland. For this man and his family, it was | :03:17. | :03:29.
a huge relief to be back in Dublin. He had been close to the attack as | :03:30. | :03:34.
it happened. We were in a cafe, my wife and two kids had come back from | :03:35. | :03:40.
the promenade. I saw the white truck driver straight past. It was mowing | :03:41. | :03:46.
people down. It was chaos, people started running left, right and | :03:47. | :03:51.
centre, ducking for cover, trying to get down, people going into the | :03:52. | :03:54.
backs of cafes, just devastation. The devastation he described was too | :03:55. | :04:00.
horrific to broadcast. He is just relieved his children did not see | :04:01. | :04:06.
it. Also on the flight from Nice this afternoon was James Brown, | :04:07. | :04:09.
another Irishman who was also close to the attack. He said it all | :04:10. | :04:13.
happened in a matter of minutes. The truck flew by. I said to my wife, | :04:14. | :04:19.
God, that's travelling at a terrible speed. There was thousands of | :04:20. | :04:23.
people. And then I look and there were just bodies, a trail of bodies. | :04:24. | :04:31.
Young, old... So we ran in that direction, to runaway. And as we | :04:32. | :04:36.
started to run, we heard the gunshots. It was crystal clear that | :04:37. | :04:40.
they were gunshots. The fireworks had finished. James cut his holiday | :04:41. | :04:46.
short, and like so many of those on today's flight, was just glad to be | :04:47. | :04:49.
back. This evening, City Hall in Belfast is lit up in the colours of | :04:50. | :04:55.
the French flag to show solidarity. A book of condolence will open on | :04:56. | :04:57.
Monday. On his first full day | :04:58. | :04:59.
as the new Secretary of State, James Brokenshire has been talking | :05:00. | :05:02.
about his priorities. He says he plans to get the best | :05:03. | :05:04.
deal possible for Northern Ireland in the Brexit negotiations | :05:05. | :05:07.
and he hopes there won't be I have already had conversations | :05:08. | :05:25.
with Frances Fitzgerald, the Irish Interior Minister, to really | :05:26. | :05:28.
emphasise the need for good close collaboration and working, so that | :05:29. | :05:32.
we can ensure that we are not seeing the return of borders coming into | :05:33. | :05:35.
place. I believe there is a really strong commit and from both | :05:36. | :05:38.
governments to achieve that. Clearly that is one of the priority items | :05:39. | :05:40.
that I will be taking forward. Police are treating the death | :05:41. | :05:43.
of a woman in Newtownards as suspicious, and are | :05:44. | :05:45.
appealing for information. The body of 33-year-old | :05:46. | :05:47.
Joanne Thompson, a mother of four, was found at her home | :05:48. | :05:49.
in Old Mill Court by a family member The police want to hear from anyone | :05:50. | :05:53.
who witnessed any disturbance or altercation at the 11th night | :05:54. | :05:56.
bonfire in the West Winds estate, or saw activity around her home | :05:57. | :05:59.
on Tuesday night. It has been a challenging day | :06:00. | :06:08.
for the world's best golfers at the Open Championship | :06:09. | :06:10.
at Royal Troon. Ireland's four major champions | :06:11. | :06:12.
Rory McIlroy, Darren Clarke, Graeme McDowell and Padraig | :06:13. | :06:14.
Harrington all made the halfway cut, but as Stephen Watson reports, | :06:15. | :06:18.
they are all well off the pace. On the tee, from Northern Ireland, | :06:19. | :06:32.
Rory McIlory! Broomstick began the day with much expectation, and in | :06:33. | :06:37.
wet and windy conditions, got off to a fine start. He produced three | :06:38. | :06:41.
excellent birdies in his first seven holes. But mistakes crept in as the | :06:42. | :06:49.
round progressed. Kilroy's Potter started to let him down. Though he | :06:50. | :06:55.
did rally and bounce back with another birdie. -- McIlory's putter. | :06:56. | :07:02.
He is still eight shots off the lead. It is the open championship. | :07:03. | :07:09.
The last one I played I got the good end of the draw, and good things | :07:10. | :07:12.
happened. This year it is not so much, but I'm not going to let being | :07:13. | :07:16.
on the wrong side ruin my week. I feel like I have played very well, | :07:17. | :07:21.
and that gives me optimism going into the weekend. I have played the | :07:22. | :07:25.
front nine well, especially. If I can get off to summon the start | :07:26. | :07:28.
tomorrow, get a bit closer to the leaders, play the back nine a little | :07:29. | :07:33.
bit better, you never know. Darren Clarke had this brilliant shot at | :07:34. | :07:38.
the 18th hole to set up a birdie and secure his place for the weekend. He | :07:39. | :07:44.
is 11 shots off the pace. Graeme McDowell just made the cut, three | :07:45. | :07:51.
shots further back. So, Northern Ireland's Major champions with a lot | :07:52. | :07:54.
of work to do if they are to have any chance of mounting an Open | :07:55. | :08:02.
challenge over the weekend. In the League of Ireland Premier division | :08:03. | :08:05.
tonight, Derry City were in action, and they beat Longford town 4-0. It | :08:06. | :08:10.
is a result which leaves them third in the league table. | :08:11. | :08:14.
Now with the weekend weather forecast, here's Angie Philips. | :08:15. | :08:21.
We had some very humid air over us today. | :08:22. | :08:24.
25 Celsius at one point in County Down. | :08:25. | :08:28.
It will be turning a little bit fresher through the weekend. | :08:29. | :08:35.
There will be patchy rain here and there, | :08:36. | :08:37.
There will be a good deal of dry weather. | :08:38. | :08:40.
It will turn drier through the second half | :08:41. | :08:42.
And less humid, with lows around 9 or 10 degrees. | :08:43. | :08:46.
Tomorrow, patchy rain for some parts, mainly later in the day. | :08:47. | :08:53.
Lots of dry weather in the morning, with bright intervals. | :08:54. | :08:56.
This dry slot extends into southern and eastern Scotland. | :08:57. | :09:01.
That band of rain this evening edges south into the Republic of Ireland, | :09:02. | :09:04.
To the south of that, some very warm and humid air, | :09:05. | :09:11.
To the north of that band, it is fresher air | :09:12. | :09:16.
Showers in Scotland, and also possibly affecting northern | :09:17. | :09:20.
parts of Northern Ireland later in the afternoon. | :09:21. | :09:30.
But mainly patchy. Elsewhere, especially towards the south, it | :09:31. | :09:37.
stays dry. Not as warm as today. First to average, and it should feel | :09:38. | :09:42.
fairly present. It is likely that the rain will linger tomorrow night | :09:43. | :09:45.
in the north. It clears away on Sunday morning. Sunday should be | :09:46. | :09:51.
mainly dry for many of us. Warmer into next week. | :09:52. | :09:53.
