Good evening.

0:00:060:00:08

A man in his 20s is being treated in hospital after being seriously

0:00:080:00:11

assaulted in West Belfast in the early hours of yesterday.

0:00:110:00:14

The police say he was at a house party in Wauchope Court off

0:00:140:00:18

Roden Street before the attack.

0:00:180:00:21

Sinn Fein's National Chairperson has accused the First Minister

0:00:210:00:24

of unvarnished arrogance regarding the significance

0:00:240:00:27

of the political crisis over the renewable heat scandal.

0:00:270:00:32

Declan Kearney said the political process is being dragged

0:00:320:00:35

towards an unprecedented tipping point as a result of

0:00:350:00:38

the DUP's behaviour.

0:00:380:00:42

He has called for Arlene Foster to step aside to allow

0:00:420:00:45

an independent investigation to be held into the controversial scheme.

0:00:450:00:52

Three vehicles have been destroyed and a house damaged in a series

0:00:520:00:55

of arson attacks in Holywood.

0:00:550:00:57

The attacks were in East Link, Abbey Ring and Abbey Place

0:00:570:00:59

in the early hours of New Year's Day.

0:00:590:01:03

A van, a people carrier and a car were set alight

0:01:030:01:05

between 3:15am and 4am.

0:01:050:01:08

The police say they are investigating a link

0:01:080:01:10

between all of the incidents.

0:01:100:01:14

Two men arrested in connection with an attack in Portrush

0:01:140:01:18

in the early hours of yesterday morning have been released on bail.

0:01:180:01:20

A 44-year-old man suffered a suspected broken arm

0:01:200:01:23

in the assault in the Dhu Varren Park area.

0:01:230:01:26

A 69-year-old man was treated in hospital for cuts to his head.

0:01:260:01:31

Windows of a house and a car were also damaged.

0:01:310:01:35

The Tyrone Gaelic Football manager Mickey Harte has said the GAA

0:01:350:01:38

could stop playing the Irish national anthem and flying

0:01:380:01:43

the tricolour at matches when, as he put it, "the time is right."

0:01:430:01:47

The GAA's president has said changes could come in the future as part

0:01:470:01:51

of an "agreed Ireland."

0:01:510:01:53

Mickey Harte was speaking to the BBCs Talkback programme.

0:01:530:01:57

Life changes, things move on.

0:01:570:02:01

There was a time in the '70s when you were not allowed to play,

0:02:010:02:04

in adverted commas, foreign games and play in the GAA,

0:02:040:02:07

so that has changed.

0:02:070:02:11

There were times when the police force from this part of the world

0:02:110:02:14

were not allowed to play.

0:02:140:02:15

These things changed over time, but they have to change

0:02:150:02:18

when the time is right.

0:02:180:02:20

Five students from Zambia have received diplomas in computing

0:02:200:02:25

with the help of tutors who were thousands of miles away

0:02:250:02:28

at South West College in Omagh.

0:02:280:02:31

The students used a video link with the college

0:02:310:02:34

to do their studies, but made the journey

0:02:340:02:37

to County Tyrone to collect their diplomas in person,

0:02:370:02:39

as our South West Reporter Julian Fowler reports.

0:02:390:02:43

A graduation photo to cherish.

0:02:430:02:45

These five students from Zambia had been studying IT for the last four

0:02:450:02:49

years and have achieved their Level 4 Diploma in Computing

0:02:490:02:51

and Systems Development.

0:02:510:02:56

This is where they study - a classroom at Fatima

0:02:560:02:58

Girls Secondary School, in Ndola in northern Zambia.

0:02:580:03:03

Meanwhile, their tutors are 5000 miles away in the Virtual

0:03:030:03:05

Learning Centre in Omagh.

0:03:050:03:08

Everybody told us at the start that this would never work,

0:03:080:03:11

that the challenges were too great and that we couldn't do it.

0:03:110:03:14

But we have done it.

0:03:140:03:15

The students have persevered through significant challenges -

0:03:150:03:17

drought, lack of electricity, walking through the rainy season,

0:03:170:03:23

and they have achieved so much and we are so proud of them.

0:03:230:03:29

20 students began the course four years ago, and though only

0:03:290:03:33

five have graduated, it has given them new life skills.

0:03:330:03:38

They appreciate this opportunity that has been given to them.

0:03:380:03:42

This is a big achievement, because by their education

0:03:420:03:45

and even this graduation they are going to

0:03:450:03:47

touch so many lives.

0:03:470:03:48

The computer equipment and internet connection in Zambia

0:03:480:03:51

was provided by a charity.

0:03:510:03:54

They will earn their living and they will keep their families,

0:03:540:03:57

and that's the key to the whole thing.

0:03:570:03:59

And they'll influence an awful lot of people to do something similar

0:03:590:04:01

to what they have done themselves, and that's the benefit.

0:04:010:04:04

It may be small in numbers, five, but this will multiply.

0:04:040:04:09

It can be difficult for students in Zambia to fund further studies

0:04:090:04:11

after leaving school.

0:04:110:04:15

These graduates hope to teach or get jobs in industry.

0:04:150:04:18

I really never imagined it.

0:04:180:04:23

It's so unreal, I can say.

0:04:230:04:24

We are just really, really proud and happy to be here.

0:04:240:04:29

It's a wonderful moment.

0:04:290:04:31

Patrick Chingaipe.

0:04:310:04:32

APPLAUSE.

0:04:320:04:35

As they collected their diplomas, they were given loud applause

0:04:350:04:38

from the other graduates.

0:04:380:04:41

The five Zambian students have been on a long journey

0:04:410:04:44

to get to this ceremony, and there is a great sense of pride

0:04:440:04:47

in their achievement.

0:04:470:04:56

The National Museum of Ireland has appealed to whoever anonymously sent

0:04:560:04:58

in archaeological discoveries to come forward.

0:04:580:05:08

This is one of the National Museum's four sites.

0:05:080:05:12

It is next to the Dail.

0:05:120:05:16

People visit each week to look at the collections,

0:05:160:05:20

covering different ages, including the Bronze Age

0:05:200:05:23

and the Viking periods.

0:05:230:05:28

Recently, they received four items sent anonymously with these

0:05:280:05:33

letters without a postmark, addressed to the History Museum

0:05:330:05:35

rather than the National Museum.

0:05:350:05:38

It gives rise to a suspicion that the sender may not have been

0:05:380:05:41

living in Ireland for very long.

0:05:410:05:45

The items include two Bronze Age axes, a Viking strap end that

0:05:450:05:55

originated in Scandinavia, probably Norway, and very rare

0:05:590:06:01

in Ireland, and a small, twisted ring which may be linked

0:06:010:06:03

to the strap end.

0:06:030:06:06

The museum believes the items were probably discovered in at least

0:06:060:06:10

three different sites.

0:06:100:06:13

There is also a suspicion that the artefacts were found

0:06:130:06:17

using a metal detector, even though it is illegal

0:06:170:06:19

to excavate items with a metal detector without a licence.

0:06:190:06:23

The finder may not have known that, especially

0:06:230:06:27

if he or she is from abroad.

0:06:270:06:30

But staff would like whoever discover the artefacts to come

0:06:300:06:33

forward, to let them know the circumstances and whereabouts

0:06:330:06:37

of the finds in order to help them build up the picture of Irish

0:06:370:06:40

history and prehistory.

0:06:400:06:46

Road conditions in some parts earlier today were described

0:06:460:06:49

as "treacherous" by the police and there were six crashes

0:06:490:06:51

in the Ballymena area.

0:06:510:06:54

Let's hear if the cold weather is set to continue

0:06:540:06:56

with Angie Phillips.

0:06:560:06:58

Hello, good evening.

0:06:580:07:00

It's been a fairly settled start to the new year so far,

0:07:000:07:03

if not a bit on the cold side with some wintry showers.

0:07:030:07:06

Not so much wintry showers in the forecast this week.

0:07:060:07:08

Some rain, not an awful lot of it though until we get

0:07:080:07:11

to the end of the week.

0:07:110:07:12

Variable cloud, so some bright or sunny spells.

0:07:120:07:14

It will continue to feel quite chilly though for a good part

0:07:140:07:17

of the week as well.

0:07:170:07:18

And certainly quite cold in places for a time this evening.

0:07:180:07:21

Clear spells inland and towards the south.

0:07:210:07:23

The temperatures here dropping close to freezing,

0:07:230:07:24

even slightly below.

0:07:240:07:26

That will lead to some frost.

0:07:260:07:28

Where we have a few showers, maybe some icy patches as well.

0:07:280:07:31

But only temporarily.

0:07:310:07:33

We have more cloud edging its way in through the night.

0:07:330:07:35

As it does so, the temperatures will start to rise a little,

0:07:350:07:38

but we will also get more in the way of rain or drizzle

0:07:380:07:41

pushing in as well.

0:07:410:07:42

Into tomorrow, if you are heading back to work it's a cloudy day.

0:07:420:07:45

You will get some patchy rain around, particularly but not

0:07:450:07:48

exclusively across parts of the North and West.

0:07:480:07:50

A bit more breeze bringing a few spots further inland.

0:07:500:07:52

But for parts of Scotland, particularly the north

0:07:520:07:54

and North West, it's a wet and a windy day tomorrow.

0:07:540:07:57

Elsewhere a few spots moving into northern England, North Wales.

0:07:570:07:59

Other than that the rest of England and Wales and the Republic

0:07:590:08:02

of Ireland largely dry after a frosty start.

0:08:020:08:06

The best sunshine though towards the south and perhaps more

0:08:060:08:09

sheltered parts of the East.

0:08:090:08:12

For Northern Ireland, plenty of cloud around

0:08:120:08:14

I think come the afternoon.

0:08:140:08:16

And as I mentioned still some bits and pieces and rain running

0:08:160:08:18

through on the breeze.

0:08:180:08:20

But mainly light and patchy, so there will be dry spells,

0:08:200:08:22

the best of those likely towards the south east.

0:08:220:08:25

Temperatures a little bit better than today.

0:08:250:08:26

Seven or eight Celsius, but with more of a breeze,

0:08:260:08:29

particularly around the coast, it will continue to feel quite cold.

0:08:290:08:31

Into tomorrow night, we still have the cloud,

0:08:310:08:34

patchy drizzle, the breeze, so it should be frost free.

0:08:340:08:36

We also have a fairly weak weather front moving in from the North.

0:08:360:08:39

That will bring a narrow band of rain south-westwards

0:08:390:08:42

through tomorrow night.

0:08:420:08:44

That then clears away the south-west on Wednesday,

0:08:440:08:48

so a mainly dry and bright day following in behind that,

0:08:480:08:51

with highs of around seven or eight Celsius.

0:08:510:08:53

The breeze easing down as well.

0:08:530:08:55

There is off to a frosty start, mainly dry, but some rain on the way

0:08:550:08:59

for Thursday night into Friday, but a little bit milder.

0:08:590:09:03

Our next television news is at 10:20pm tonight.

0:09:030:09:07

Good evening.
