A jury at the inquest into the death
of five members of a Londonderry | 0:01:35 | 0:01:40
family in Buncrana last year has
returned findings of | 0:01:40 | 0:01:42
death by misadventure. | 0:01:42 | 0:01:45
Louise James lost her husband Sean
and two young sons Mark and Evan | 0:01:45 | 0:01:48
as well as her mother Ruth
and sister Jodie Lee when their car | 0:01:48 | 0:01:52
slid off a slipway into the water. | 0:01:52 | 0:01:54
Yesterday, the inquest heard that
Sean McGrotty was more than three | 0:01:54 | 0:01:58
times over the Republic's
drink drive limit. | 0:01:58 | 0:02:01
The coroner said while people
could sympathise and empathise | 0:02:01 | 0:02:03
with the family, no one
could imagine or contemplate | 0:02:03 | 0:02:06
how they feel. | 0:02:06 | 0:02:08
Our north west reporter
Keiron Tourish reports | 0:02:08 | 0:02:10
from the inquest in Buncrana. | 0:02:10 | 0:02:16
It was always going to be a highly
emotive inquest. But little did | 0:02:16 | 0:02:21
anyone realise the sheer scale and
distress of the Buncrana tragedy. | 0:02:21 | 0:02:27
Five lost their lives after the car
driven by Sean McGrotty slid off the | 0:02:27 | 0:02:32
slipway and entered the water on
March 20 2016. No witnesses saw the | 0:02:32 | 0:02:39
car going in. But the coroner's
court had the algae on the surface | 0:02:39 | 0:02:43
was very slippery and just like ice.
The inquest heard Sean McGrotty was | 0:02:43 | 0:02:48
more than three times the
drink-driving limit, a pathologist | 0:02:48 | 0:02:52
said she could not say what
impairment a driver with that amount | 0:02:52 | 0:02:56
of alcohol would have as each person
is different. His two sons, Mark | 0:02:56 | 0:03:01
aged 12 and over and he was eight as
well as his partner's mother Ruth | 0:03:01 | 0:03:06
Daniels and her 14-year-old daughter
also drowned. In his evidence, they | 0:03:06 | 0:03:14
received a telephone call at 715 to
the Garda station that a car had | 0:03:14 | 0:03:20
gone off the pier with persons on
board. He arrived there within one | 0:03:20 | 0:03:25
minute. He saw a young baby being
cared for and was told four or five | 0:03:25 | 0:03:31
others were missing. He said the
baby was taken to hospital by | 0:03:31 | 0:03:35
ambulance, he said CPI was being
performed on Ruth Daniels. He added | 0:03:35 | 0:03:39
that the pier was extremely slippery
with thick algae. He then cleared | 0:03:39 | 0:03:44
the pier and sealed it off. Garda
Callaghan said four others were | 0:03:44 | 0:03:49
taken from the water and they had
all died. He placed a blanket over | 0:03:49 | 0:03:54
them and a local priest said prayers
over each of the bodies. The jury of | 0:03:54 | 0:03:59
five men and four women found that
all five victims died due to | 0:03:59 | 0:04:04
drowning. The verdict was death due
to misadventure. I firmly believe | 0:04:04 | 0:04:09
the slipway should have been closed
to the general public or else proper | 0:04:09 | 0:04:13
warning signs displayed. As it was
an accident waiting to happen. | 0:04:13 | 0:04:21
Hopefully, lessons will be learnt
and the recommendations made | 0:04:21 | 0:04:25
following this inquest will be
implemented. The jury said this had | 0:04:25 | 0:04:29
been a heartbreaking tragedy. They
said Irish water safety should now | 0:04:29 | 0:04:34
take a prominent role in liaising
with all the relevant agencies to | 0:04:34 | 0:04:39
promote safety. | 0:04:39 | 0:04:45
The niece of a man who was once
accused of being a serial killer | 0:04:49 | 0:04:52
says her uncle was a monster
who abused her. | 0:04:52 | 0:04:55
Debbie Ross, who now lives
in the US, has waived her right | 0:04:55 | 0:04:58
to anonymity to tell her story. | 0:04:58 | 0:05:01
Her uncle, Leslie Ross from Dromore,
died earlier this month while facing | 0:05:01 | 0:05:04
44 sex abuse charges. | 0:05:04 | 0:05:07
Our investigations correspondent
Kevin Magee reports from New York. | 0:05:07 | 0:05:16
Debbie Ross wants her voice heard
from across the Atlantic. As a child | 0:05:16 | 0:05:20
growing up in County Down she says
she was sexually abused by her uncle | 0:05:20 | 0:05:24
Leslie between the ages of six and
ten. He would later become a | 0:05:24 | 0:05:28
suspected serial killer he abused
his knees when she visited her | 0:05:28 | 0:05:32
grandparents pub. A monster, an
absolute monster. To have done what | 0:05:32 | 0:05:42
he did to me is very disturbing but
I was also very afraid of him. The | 0:05:42 | 0:05:49
last time I was around him I was 18
and he would come into the bar at | 0:05:49 | 0:05:55
that point, have a piece of wood
with four inch nails sticking out | 0:05:55 | 0:06:01
and he was terrifying. The abuse had
a huge impact on her what she was | 0:06:01 | 0:06:04
growing up in Northern Ireland. I
acted out really badly. I would say | 0:06:04 | 0:06:16
I was self-destructive. I was
promiscuous, I drank a lot, I | 0:06:16 | 0:06:21
smoked, I did every racket there was
going. Determined to turn her life | 0:06:21 | 0:06:26
around she did her A-levels as a
mature student and went to Queens | 0:06:26 | 0:06:30
University finally graduating with a
doctorate in science. By becoming | 0:06:30 | 0:06:35
immersed in education was at a way
of coping with what happens to you | 0:06:35 | 0:06:39
in your earlier life? Absolutely.
When you're in science it is what | 0:06:39 | 0:06:44
you say and think that matters, it
is not what you have been through, | 0:06:44 | 0:06:50
it is nothing, it is purely your
mind that you can be judged on. | 0:06:50 | 0:06:55
Looking for a clean break she
emigrated to the USA in 2005 washes | 0:06:55 | 0:07:00
now a successful research scientist.
In 2015 uncle Leslie was acquitted | 0:07:00 | 0:07:04
of killing three former girlfriends.
He had been facing 44 abuse charges | 0:07:04 | 0:07:13
when he died earlier this month, his
death meant Debbie's accusations | 0:07:13 | 0:07:18
could no longer be tested in court.
The outcome would have been outed | 0:07:18 | 0:07:24
out conviction, no doubt. The PSNI
agree. | 0:07:24 | 0:07:30
Why have you decided to waive your
right to anonymity and speak to me | 0:07:39 | 0:07:43
today? I would like to appeal to
other people who are victims to | 0:07:43 | 0:07:49
speak up, it is never too late to
decide to take back your own life | 0:07:49 | 0:07:55
and to reach your own goals again,
to realise that they damaged you as | 0:07:55 | 0:08:01
a person but you ultimately can
heal, the damage can be minimised. | 0:08:01 | 0:08:06
It will not be removed but it can be
dealt with, it does not lead to | 0:08:06 | 0:08:10
impact your life for two years the
weight has done mine, speak up, get | 0:08:10 | 0:08:14
help. By going public, Debbie Ross
hopes she is sending out a clear | 0:08:14 | 0:08:21
message that it is never too late
for victims of abuse to come forward | 0:08:21 | 0:08:25
no matter hammered the years have
passed or how many minds they have | 0:08:25 | 0:08:30
put behind them. | 0:08:30 | 0:08:32
The joint bid by Belfast,
Derry and Strabane Councils to win | 0:08:32 | 0:08:35
the title of European Capital
of Culture 2023 appears to be over. | 0:08:35 | 0:08:41
The European Commission has now
decided no UK city can | 0:08:41 | 0:08:44
now apply for the role. | 0:08:44 | 0:08:46
They said Brexit means British
cities are no longer eligible. | 0:08:46 | 0:08:49
BBC Newsline's Mark Simpson reports. | 0:08:49 | 0:08:56
It was billed as a chance to shine.
On the European stage. Belfast City | 0:08:56 | 0:09:03
Council, together with Derry and
Strabane council trying to become | 0:09:03 | 0:09:07
European capital of culture 2023.
But not any more. A letter sent to | 0:09:07 | 0:09:14
the UK government from Brussels this
week was blunt and to the point. | 0:09:14 | 0:09:18
The political blame game has begun.
It is a terrible story today to | 0:09:27 | 0:09:33
learn that Brexit has had another
casualty and those who argue that | 0:09:33 | 0:09:38
Brexit should be hanging their heads
in shame today. The DUP are blaming | 0:09:38 | 0:09:42
Brussels. This is part of a bigger
game, you have seen over a few days | 0:09:42 | 0:09:48
a series of stories and the EU was
well aware for months if not years | 0:09:48 | 0:09:53
and they allowed us to proceed but
only now at the last minute have | 0:09:53 | 0:09:56
they raise this issue so they are
playing a big game which is not | 0:09:56 | 0:10:00
appropriate for something people
have invested time and money. Around | 0:10:00 | 0:10:05
£350,000 has been spent locally and
they are not the only city is now | 0:10:05 | 0:10:10
out of pocket. A number of English
and Scottish cities have also been | 0:10:10 | 0:10:14
bidding for the capital of culture
title, Leeds, Nottingham, Milton | 0:10:14 | 0:10:20
Keynes and Dundee. Today, they too
have been left shocked, angry and | 0:10:20 | 0:10:25
disappointed. Belfast has been to
this before. A previous bid also | 0:10:25 | 0:10:29
failed. It is bad news for us. But
city councillors have not given up | 0:10:29 | 0:10:36
hope of reviving the latest bid.
Definitely not giving up, in the | 0:10:36 | 0:10:42
context of Brexit looking a special
status, we are keen to see this | 0:10:42 | 0:10:48
realised. But what started as a
culture competition has now become | 0:10:48 | 0:10:52
more of a political contest. | 0:10:52 | 0:10:55
Our arts correspondent
Robbie Meredith is with me now. | 0:10:55 | 0:10:57
Robbie, there had been high hopes
for this bid hadn't there? | 0:10:57 | 0:11:01
There have, we broke the news at BBC
Newsline in February that Belfast | 0:11:01 | 0:11:06
and Derry were considering a joint
bid and nine months ago they have | 0:11:06 | 0:11:11
been gathering support pulling
together a big bid book which | 0:11:11 | 0:11:13
outlined what they wanted to do in
2023 and lobbying and promoting that | 0:11:13 | 0:11:18
across Northern Ireland and also
Brussels and New York. In five days | 0:11:18 | 0:11:22
from now the bid team were due in
London to give a presentation to get | 0:11:22 | 0:11:29
them short listed so timing wise the
announcement from the European | 0:11:29 | 0:11:31
commission has come out of the blue. | 0:11:31 | 0:11:33
What about the cost
to the public purse? | 0:11:33 | 0:11:38
Both councils set aside £800,000 for
the bid process, around half of that | 0:11:38 | 0:11:43
money has been spent. Should the
bids have gone ahead and the money | 0:11:43 | 0:11:46
been spent there was a previous
warning from the UK government that | 0:11:46 | 0:11:51
Brexit might affect the UK being
awarded title in 2023 but until | 0:11:51 | 0:11:54
today the government, five competing
cities were competing as normal so | 0:11:54 | 0:11:59
it's difficult bit too critical of
them to continue with the process | 0:11:59 | 0:12:04
but until today there was no strong
indication the plug would be Paul | 0:12:04 | 0:12:06
Dunne. | 0:12:06 | 0:12:08
A document leaked to RTE in Brussels
says the UK government's | 0:12:08 | 0:12:11
Brexit talks have been
'chaotic and incoherent'. | 0:12:11 | 0:12:15
The internal Irish government
paper gives scathing | 0:12:15 | 0:12:18
assessments of key members
of the British Brexit | 0:12:18 | 0:12:20
negotiating team. | 0:12:20 | 0:12:21
Let's speak to our Dublin
correspondent, Shane Harrison. | 0:12:21 | 0:12:23
What have the Irish
government said in response? | 0:12:23 | 0:12:30
The leaked document is based on
reports back to Dublin by senior | 0:12:30 | 0:12:34
Irish diplomats on their very recent
and extensive round of meetings with | 0:12:34 | 0:12:39
government ministers and various EU
member states and officials in | 0:12:39 | 0:12:43
different European capitals. If
there is a common thread it is the | 0:12:43 | 0:12:47
alarm being expressed by named
ministers and officials about what | 0:12:47 | 0:12:52
they see as the lack of coherence
from British ministers and officials | 0:12:52 | 0:12:56
about what Brexit means and what
they see as chaos at the heart of | 0:12:56 | 0:13:01
the British Tory cabinet. Such is
their concern and alarm there is a | 0:13:01 | 0:13:05
fear expressed by some that next
month at the EU summit in Brussels | 0:13:05 | 0:13:09
they may not be able to move on to
phase two of the negotiations which | 0:13:09 | 0:13:13
is when the future relationship
between the two sides including | 0:13:13 | 0:13:16
trade will be discussed. The UK is
keen for that to happen but the EU | 0:13:16 | 0:13:21
27 so we want to get there too but
first there has to be sufficient | 0:13:21 | 0:13:27
progress in the ongoing divorce
negotiations on three key areas, the | 0:13:27 | 0:13:30
Irish border, citizens rights and
the UK continuing contribution to | 0:13:30 | 0:13:33
the EU budget. And have the Irish
government said anything? Sources | 0:13:33 | 0:13:40
concede the document is genuine but
say they are adamant it was not | 0:13:40 | 0:13:45
deliberately leaked to put pressure
on the British ahead of next month | 0:13:45 | 0:13:49
summit. Some privately say it is
more embarrassing to Dublin because | 0:13:49 | 0:13:54
private comments by named
individuals are suddenly getting a | 0:13:54 | 0:13:58
lot of publicity, ten Downing St
says it will not comment on the leak | 0:13:58 | 0:14:01
but it does have a good and
constructive relationship with | 0:14:01 | 0:14:04
Dublin. | 0:14:04 | 0:14:09
Ice hockey fans are ready to welcome
American teams to the friendship or | 0:14:09 | 0:14:14
tournament this weekend. | 0:14:14 | 0:14:19
A 78 year old woman whose son
was murdered by loyalists 19 years | 0:14:19 | 0:14:22
ago has appealed to the Secretary
of State to make sure her son | 0:14:22 | 0:14:25
doesn't become a forgotten victim. | 0:14:25 | 0:14:28
35 year old Brian Service
was walking home in Ardoyne in | 0:14:28 | 0:14:31
North Belfast when he was shot dead. | 0:14:31 | 0:14:33
No-one has been
convicted of his murder. | 0:14:33 | 0:14:36
His mother Ann, is calling
for proposed legacy institutions | 0:14:36 | 0:14:39
from the Stormont House Agreement
from 2014 to be put in place | 0:14:39 | 0:14:42
while she's still alive. | 0:14:42 | 0:14:49
As I get older I'm getting angrier
and I am not mellowing. I think I | 0:14:49 | 0:14:54
owe it to my son, I owe it to my son
to do whatever has to be done and if | 0:14:54 | 0:15:03
anyone asks me to do something, I
will do it because he wasn't | 0:15:03 | 0:15:08
involved in anything. He was great
not to hate. They played together in | 0:15:08 | 0:15:17
the streets, they mixed. There was
no hate enough family. I want to | 0:15:17 | 0:15:21
know when they are taking my son's
Case up and say this is what | 0:15:21 | 0:15:26
happened. It is not about
punishment, it is about doing the | 0:15:26 | 0:15:31
right thing. | 0:15:31 | 0:15:32
Work has begun on a controversial
wind turbine beside a protected | 0:15:32 | 0:15:35
ancient monument in Co Down. | 0:15:35 | 0:15:37
Planners put a temporary stop
to the work last month. | 0:15:37 | 0:15:41
But now that order has expired
and the turbine is going up. | 0:15:41 | 0:15:45
Locals say it's being left
to them to try and halt it. | 0:15:45 | 0:15:48
Here's our Agriculture
and Environment | 0:15:48 | 0:15:49
Correspondent Conor Macauley | 0:15:49 | 0:15:55
Two days after the temporary ban
expired and a huge crane begins | 0:15:55 | 0:15:58
lifting sections of the wind turbine
into position. It is controversial | 0:15:58 | 0:16:03
because it is 100m from a protected
state monument a 5000 -year-old | 0:16:03 | 0:16:08
Neolithic burial cairn. Back in 2013
when it was approved, Planas did not | 0:16:08 | 0:16:14
consult archaeologists. Experts have
since said the turbine should not | 0:16:14 | 0:16:17
have got the go-ahead. Opponents say
if they want to get a temporary | 0:16:17 | 0:16:22
injunction to stop this work it will
cost them £2000 to do it and it will | 0:16:22 | 0:16:27
commit them to taking a full legal
challenge. They say it should not be | 0:16:27 | 0:16:31
go up to them to go down the legal
challenge to fix a problem created | 0:16:31 | 0:16:36
by the planners. This footage taken
before the turbine went in clearly | 0:16:36 | 0:16:39
shows the ancient burial mound. The
planners took the turbine decision | 0:16:39 | 0:16:49
that has been left to Armagh Council
which now has the planning powers to | 0:16:49 | 0:16:53
do with the fallout. If they revoke
planning, it could late ratepayers | 0:16:53 | 0:16:59
with a build three quarters of £1
million in compensation to the | 0:16:59 | 0:17:02
developer. We can understand that
and every day that goes past the | 0:17:02 | 0:17:07
bill will be getting higher and
author turbine goes up, the more the | 0:17:07 | 0:17:11
bill will increase. There were
opportunities where this could be | 0:17:11 | 0:17:13
stopped before and we don't
understand what is continuing. The | 0:17:13 | 0:17:19
council investigated technical
breaches of the turbine permission | 0:17:19 | 0:17:21
but the wider issue of whether to
revoke it is still being considered. | 0:17:21 | 0:17:26
Opponents are worried that by the
time the council makes up its mind, | 0:17:26 | 0:17:29
the turbine will be up and the price
of taking it down will be considered | 0:17:29 | 0:17:34
too high to pay. | 0:17:34 | 0:17:37
The Electoral Commission has
welcomed the government's decision | 0:17:37 | 0:17:41
to open the way for the details
of people who make donations | 0:17:41 | 0:17:44
to political parties here to be
published but says it's disappointed | 0:17:44 | 0:17:46
it didn't happen sooner. | 0:17:46 | 0:17:49
This morning the body said
it was extremely disappointed | 0:17:49 | 0:17:51
it was unable to publish the details
of donations made to parties | 0:17:51 | 0:17:56
in Northern Ireland today
because the government had not yet | 0:17:56 | 0:17:58
laid the necessary legislation. | 0:17:58 | 0:17:59
Here's our political
correspondent Gareth Gordon. | 0:17:59 | 0:18:07
Northern Ireland is the only part of
the UK for large political donations | 0:18:07 | 0:18:10
can be made in secret. In July the
Secretary of State said he would | 0:18:10 | 0:18:16
bring forward legislation that would
lead to the publication of all | 0:18:16 | 0:18:20
payments over seven and a half
thousand pounds from the 1st of | 0:18:20 | 0:18:24
July. But this morning the election
commission said or though it had | 0:18:24 | 0:18:27
expected to publish the first set of
figures today, it couldn't as the | 0:18:27 | 0:18:31
legislation had not been laid before
Parliament. We are extremely | 0:18:31 | 0:18:36
disappointed the information is not
in the public domain, win over | 0:18:36 | 0:18:40
voters in Northern Ireland want to
know who is funding political | 0:18:40 | 0:18:43
parties here and it is a real
disappointment it is not possible | 0:18:43 | 0:18:46
for us to publish the data yet. But
then came a surprise development. | 0:18:46 | 0:18:52
The government said it was bringing
legislation this afternoon, the | 0:18:52 | 0:18:55
commission welcomed the move but
said it should have come sooner. I | 0:18:55 | 0:18:59
can't speculate on what is going on,
I am pleased to hear the legislation | 0:18:59 | 0:19:03
has been tabled, that is good news
because once it has gone through | 0:19:03 | 0:19:07
Parliament will be able to publish
the first set of data on donations | 0:19:07 | 0:19:13
to political parties. We are
disappointed we were not able to | 0:19:13 | 0:19:16
publish the data today as planned
but I am pleased the government has | 0:19:16 | 0:19:21
brought forward legislation and to
look forward to bring brought into | 0:19:21 | 0:19:24
force. The commission says it is
still not happy about the way this | 0:19:24 | 0:19:27
has been handled instead of the
figures being published today, we | 0:19:27 | 0:19:31
may not see them until January. | 0:19:31 | 0:19:35
A lorry driver who crashed
into a bridge near Bangor, | 0:19:35 | 0:19:38
causing structural damage,
has been cautioned by police. | 0:19:38 | 0:19:42
The collision last night caused
large cracks and stones to fall | 0:19:42 | 0:19:46
from the Old Railway Bridge
on the Ballysallagh Road. | 0:19:46 | 0:19:49
Police say it needs to be assessed
by structural engineers and the road | 0:19:49 | 0:19:53
is expected to remain closed
for a number of weeks, | 0:19:53 | 0:19:55
causing disruption to commuters
and local businesses. | 0:19:55 | 0:19:58
It's understood to be
the latest in a series | 0:19:58 | 0:20:00
of crashes at the bridge. | 0:20:00 | 0:20:05
It is very disappointing this
happens again. It has a major impact | 0:20:05 | 0:20:09
on commuter traffic in the morning,
congested is going to see further | 0:20:09 | 0:20:14
traffic arriving and it has an
impact. We have put up diversion | 0:20:14 | 0:20:22
signs which is result in our guests
doing a two to three minute detour | 0:20:22 | 0:20:29
and our hope is that this will be
resolved between the Department for | 0:20:29 | 0:20:33
infrastructure of the local council
and the estate. | 0:20:33 | 0:20:37
Imagine seeing one of these
creatures in your garden. | 0:20:37 | 0:20:39
Would you know what it was? | 0:20:39 | 0:20:40
Our reporter Julie McCullough didn't
know right away but she took some | 0:20:40 | 0:20:43
footage on her phone and then called
in the experts. | 0:20:43 | 0:20:49
It looks like a bird but don't be
fooled. This is actually a moth. A | 0:20:49 | 0:20:56
hummingbird hawk moths to be exact.
It is a moth that defies all the | 0:20:56 | 0:21:03
moth myths, it flies by day and
people like it which makes it out of | 0:21:03 | 0:21:09
kilter. It's an amazing creature,
does not live here normally, does | 0:21:09 | 0:21:12
not breed here throughout the year
but it comes to visit us in quite | 0:21:12 | 0:21:17
large numbers throughout the year
from continental Europe. Is it rare? | 0:21:17 | 0:21:21
It is not something people are
expecting to see, it can turn up | 0:21:21 | 0:21:26
absolutely anywhere so it is not a
rare kitchen -- creature but it does | 0:21:26 | 0:21:32
not turn up with enormous numbers so
seeing, I have seen one once in my | 0:21:32 | 0:21:39
life in Ireland. Although not
something would see every day, this | 0:21:39 | 0:21:43
year there have been more recorded
sightings than any other recently. | 0:21:43 | 0:21:47
That could be because we had a
pretty decent summer. The | 0:21:47 | 0:21:52
hummingbird hawk moth loves a bit of
nectar so if you are interested in | 0:21:52 | 0:21:56
attracting them to your garden, you
could try planting some rosemary or | 0:21:56 | 0:22:03
something like this. The important
thing is to choose a variety of | 0:22:03 | 0:22:08
plants flower at different times
throughout whole year. This little | 0:22:08 | 0:22:12
creature can turn up at any time in
your garden, even during winter if | 0:22:12 | 0:22:16
there is a period of settled warm
weather. So keep your eyes peeled, | 0:22:16 | 0:22:20
there has been recorded sighting in
January in the past. | 0:22:20 | 0:22:27
Now, sport with Gavin Andrews. | 0:22:27 | 0:22:29
After Joe Schmidt gave his fringe
players a run against Fiji last | 0:22:29 | 0:22:34
weekend, Ireland will revert
to the tried and tested | 0:22:34 | 0:22:37
for Saturday's final
Autumn International with Argentina. | 0:22:37 | 0:22:42
But there's a first cap on the wing
for Adam Byrne of Leinster. | 0:22:42 | 0:22:45
Chris Farrell, the former Ulster
centre, retains his place | 0:22:45 | 0:22:47
as Robbie Henshaw is injured. | 0:22:47 | 0:22:50
And in the pack , Devin Toner makes
way for James Ryan who lines up | 0:22:50 | 0:22:54
alongside Ulster's Iain Henderson. | 0:22:54 | 0:22:59
To start I was one of the younger
guys and it was a changing of the | 0:22:59 | 0:23:06
guard. Interesting to see it happen
but I think having trained and | 0:23:06 | 0:23:10
played with players you learn so
much from them and you try to pass | 0:23:10 | 0:23:15
on bits and pieces I continue
learning yourself and hopefully I | 0:23:15 | 0:23:18
have been able to do that and we
will see how James comes out the | 0:23:18 | 0:23:22
other side Saturday afternoon. | 0:23:22 | 0:23:23
Wasps prop Marty Moore
will join Ulster next summer | 0:23:23 | 0:23:26
on a two-year deal. | 0:23:26 | 0:23:27
The Wasps man has won
10 caps for Ireland. | 0:23:27 | 0:23:29
Several of Ulster's young players
will feature against Benetton | 0:23:29 | 0:23:31
in tomorrow's PRO 14
game in Belfast. | 0:23:31 | 0:23:34
There's a debut for 19 year
old Aaron Hall while Paul Marshall | 0:23:34 | 0:23:37
could become only the 5th Ulster
player to notch up 200 appearances. | 0:23:37 | 0:23:41
He's on the replacements bench. | 0:23:41 | 0:23:46
That is great, that is what this is
all about. An academy working | 0:23:46 | 0:23:50
extremely well, making giant strides
in that area and to see a couple of | 0:23:50 | 0:23:56
the boys run out this weekend would
be fantastic. We are looking at an | 0:23:56 | 0:24:00
opportunity, I do not have the
injuries we have put every team is | 0:24:00 | 0:24:04
managing those and we have to come
through. | 0:24:04 | 0:24:08
Mark Allen is out of
the Northern Ireland Open | 0:24:08 | 0:24:10
after losing four frames to three
last night to Tian Pengfay of China. | 0:24:10 | 0:24:13
Despite leading three times
in the match, the Antrim man lost | 0:24:13 | 0:24:16
a final frame decider when Pengfay
produced a break of 109 to clinch | 0:24:16 | 0:24:19
victory and knock the home
favourite out in the second | 0:24:19 | 0:24:21
round of the tournament. | 0:24:21 | 0:24:24
Four American College Ice Hockey
teams are in Belfast this | 0:24:24 | 0:24:27
week for the third ever
Friendship Four tournament. | 0:24:27 | 0:24:30
And this year sees a visit
from one of the top-ranked | 0:24:30 | 0:24:33
sides in the States. | 0:24:33 | 0:24:34
Nigel Ringland reports. | 0:24:34 | 0:24:42
Now a regular fixture on the ice at
calendar, this years friendship for | 0:24:42 | 0:24:47
tournament sees teams from New York
State, Rhode Island and Maine. | 0:24:47 | 0:24:51
They'll play conference match ups
tomorrow with the winners of the two | 0:24:51 | 0:24:54
games progress into the final on
Saturday. Favourites are the | 0:24:54 | 0:24:58
Clarkson Golden Knights ranked fifth
overall in the US. It was an | 0:24:58 | 0:25:03
exciting opportunity for us and we
travelled our road trip has been | 0:25:03 | 0:25:08
long back home have not practised
Monday is that this year so this is | 0:25:08 | 0:25:13
in our routine and we appreciate
your having us. Every school that | 0:25:13 | 0:25:18
has attended previously has raved
about the entire experience so I | 0:25:18 | 0:25:24
couldn't be more delighted to be
here. Wanna get into the rink it is | 0:25:24 | 0:25:28
hockey time. As long as they know
one gets the rink it is hockey time, | 0:25:28 | 0:25:35
we have to make sure our focus is
here. As past tournaments have | 0:25:35 | 0:25:41
shown, winning it means something to
these American visitors. | 0:25:41 | 0:25:45
And we have live coverage
of the Friendship Four the BBC sport | 0:25:45 | 0:25:48
NI website from 3 o'clock tomorrow. | 0:25:48 | 0:25:49
Tara. | 0:25:49 | 0:25:52 | |
Let's get the weather now. Today has
been a day when I have been | 0:25:52 | 0:26:00
Let's get the weather now. Today has
been a day when I have been glad to | 0:26:00 | 0:26:01
have a job that is inside. It has
been freezing out. These wonderful | 0:26:01 | 0:26:13
pictures of pine Martins, you can
send us your pictures. I suspect | 0:26:13 | 0:26:22
over the next few days I will be
getting sent pictures with snow in | 0:26:22 | 0:26:26
them because it is a really cold
nights tonight, temperatures dipping | 0:26:26 | 0:26:30
down to -3 in spots and the Met
office has a yellow severe weather | 0:26:30 | 0:26:34
warning in place for ice overnight
because with wintry showers and | 0:26:34 | 0:26:38
subzero temperatures ice is a risk.
As we head into tomorrow, it will be | 0:26:38 | 0:26:43
another day one we are drawn this
cold air out of the North West, a | 0:26:43 | 0:26:48
day of wintry showers on the hills.
There will be a bit of brightness | 0:26:48 | 0:26:53
around in between the showers but
you will need to wrap up and top | 0:26:53 | 0:26:59
temperatures four, 5 degrees, really
very chilly. Another day with clear | 0:26:59 | 0:27:06
skies and cold air, overnight
temperatures dropping away, another | 0:27:06 | 0:27:11
night when a frost is going to be
possible as we head into the | 0:27:11 | 0:27:16
weekend, temperatures down below
freezing in many spots with wintry | 0:27:16 | 0:27:19
showers continuing. You know the
theme by the weekend, polar maritime | 0:27:19 | 0:27:25
air, cold wet air out of the
north-west feeding in showers, on | 0:27:25 | 0:27:29
Saturday there will be a bit more in
the way of brightness around and by | 0:27:29 | 0:27:34
Sunday it will be a slightly drier
day, through the first half of the | 0:27:34 | 0:27:39
day by Sunday afternoon and evening
we are starting to see the approach | 0:27:39 | 0:27:43
of another weather system working in
from the west but as we go to the | 0:27:43 | 0:27:48
next few days, it is going to be
pretty chilly. Wrap up if you're | 0:27:48 | 0:27:55
heading out and about. It will be a
cold one. I love the back with the | 0:27:55 | 0:28:00
late news at 10:30pm. See. | 0:28:00 | 0:28:05 |
