Emergency Services at Daisy Hill Hospital in Newry may | :00:00. | :00:00.
have to be suspended due to a shortage of permanent | :00:07. | :00:09.
The BBC understands that the department | :00:10. | :00:12.
Staff working in Daisy Hill's emergency department were only told | :00:13. | :00:22.
A staff shortage could lead to services being | :00:23. | :00:25.
Last year more than 53,000 people attended the emergency department. | :00:26. | :00:35.
In a statement, the Trust said, the service currently remains | :00:36. | :00:37.
vulnerable to the short notice withdrawal of senior medical staff. | :00:38. | :00:53.
As of today, the department is working well, it is fully staffed | :00:54. | :00:56.
But over the last few years we've been experiencing | :00:57. | :01:04.
recruitment challenges, and as we enter the summer period it | :01:05. | :01:08.
becomes more difficult to maintain and recruit staff to the level | :01:09. | :01:12.
we need to maintain the department as a safe place to attend. | :01:13. | :01:16.
What may happen is similar to what happened at Belfast's City | :01:17. | :01:19.
It could also not staff its emergency department, | :01:20. | :01:23.
Over the years, Daisy Hill has been gradually undermined, | :01:24. | :01:35.
which may be a reason why many young doctors are not being posted | :01:36. | :01:38.
there, because maybe some feel they could have more experience | :01:39. | :01:41.
This is where patients will come if emergency services are suspended. | :01:42. | :01:45.
Back in Newry, the mention of temporary closure has people | :01:46. | :02:03.
I was here last week with my daughter, and if it wasn't for them, | :02:04. | :02:12.
While the Trust is at pains to point out it is a last resort, | :02:13. | :02:24.
it is cold comfort to those who may have to travel to Craigavon | :02:25. | :02:27.
Meanwhile it's also emerged that a quarter of all radiologists' posts | :02:28. | :02:30.
It's understood that's impacting on how quickly cancer patients | :02:31. | :02:34.
New cancer waiting time figures show all targets have again been missed. | :02:35. | :02:40.
Our health correspondent Marie-Louise Connolly has the story. | :02:41. | :02:44.
Last December, Paul Hutchinson had surgery for brain cancer. | :02:45. | :02:48.
But it took a further three weeks before he was called back | :02:49. | :02:51.
for a scan, to reveal just how successful the surgery had been | :02:52. | :02:54.
After surgery, you should know whether they've got it all. | :02:55. | :03:02.
And the wait is really, really frustrating. | :03:03. | :03:09.
It is a standard procedure, it is something that should be done, | :03:10. | :03:13.
a couple of days' recovery and you are checked out. | :03:14. | :03:19.
While cancer patients rely heavily on surgeons to remove the cancer, | :03:20. | :03:22.
they depend on radiologists to detect it. | :03:23. | :03:25.
At the moment though those specialists are in short supply | :03:26. | :03:27.
In fact the BBC has learned that approximately 40 | :03:28. | :03:32.
posts remain unfilled across the five health trusts. | :03:33. | :03:35.
According to the Health and Social Care board, | :03:36. | :03:39.
this is despite multiple attempts to recruit doctors. | :03:40. | :04:07.
Radiology is a very important area for the diagnosis | :04:08. | :04:09.
And if there are delays in the radiologists' workload, | :04:10. | :04:20.
then we are causing a backlog of patients to be treated. | :04:21. | :04:27.
The latest cancer waiting times show some improvement, | :04:28. | :04:28.
but the targets continue to be missed. | :04:29. | :04:32.
And all of this is compounded by Northern Ireland, | :04:33. | :04:35.
unlike the rest of the UK, failing to introduce | :04:36. | :04:37.
Now here's Mark Carruthers with details of what's coming up | :04:38. | :04:49.

we'll hear from the former First Minister of Scotland, Alex | :04:55. | :04:56.
Salmond, who says we should be deeply worried about | :04:57. | :04:58.
and Sinn Fein's John O Dowd make of that. | :04:59. | :05:04.

Know that I have got to sort things out for the kids and the family with | :07:31. | :07:46.
the move, only a few games left, it is sad. I would have liked to finish | :07:47. | :07:55.
my career with Ulster. Hopefully my next move, I might come back here, I | :07:56. | :08:00.
would love to come back in some way possible. | :08:01. | :08:03.
Now, with the weather forecast, here's Angie Phillips. | :08:04. | :08:10.
Still quite mild at the moment. Some parts of the north and West saw 16 | :08:11. | :08:17.
degrees. That sparked off showers in places. They will fade away for a | :08:18. | :08:22.
time but it is still unsettled tonight with another batch of rain | :08:23. | :08:26.
moving in later tonight across parts of the South and East. With the | :08:27. | :08:30.
cloud cover mild temperatures generally. Tomorrow something | :08:31. | :08:38.
brighter. Not a great start however. Grey, lots of cloud. Pretty wet in | :08:39. | :08:43.
places particularly for Central and Eastern areas. The persistence of | :08:44. | :08:48.
that rain is likely to read to surface water and spray that things | :08:49. | :08:53.
will lighten up, late morning into early afternoon. In the meantime | :08:54. | :08:58.
that rain moves off to affect Scotland. For England and Wales it | :08:59. | :09:02.
is a show at the picture. Cloudy to begin with. That's quite beating up | :09:03. | :09:10.
to give spills of sunshine. Towards the West and other batch of cloud | :09:11. | :09:14.
and rain moving in across the Republic of Ireland. After a drier | :09:15. | :09:18.
and brighter start it will be a cloudier and wetter end to the day. | :09:19. | :09:22.
This time the West sees the bulk of that rain moving in. A wet end to | :09:23. | :09:27.
the day in the West after a wet start to the day in the East. Still | :09:28. | :09:32.
miles. Surely conditions carry on through tomorrow night until the | :09:33. | :09:36.
start of Saturday at least. Becomes cooler on Saturday night. Not | :09:37. | :09:38.
looking too bad on Sunday. Our next BBC Newsline | :09:39. | :09:39.
