A woman has died after falling off a boat on Lough Erne | :00:10. | :00:13.
She had just arrived for a holiday with her husband and two | :00:14. | :00:17.
children, travelling from their home in Donegal. | :00:18. | :00:18.
It's thought she'd gone to check their hired cruiser | :00:19. | :00:21.
was moored securely to a jetty on Devenish Island | :00:22. | :00:22.
Our south west reporter Julian Fowler reports. | :00:23. | :00:25.
A scene of tranquillity but also of tragedy. | :00:26. | :00:30.
They had hired a cruiser for the weekend. | :00:31. | :00:39.
Last night, they moored at a jetty on Devenish | :00:40. | :00:41.
It was just after 1am and the children were asleep on board | :00:42. | :00:49.
when their 35-year-old mother fell into the water. | :00:50. | :00:51.
Her husband tried desperately to save her, | :00:52. | :00:56.
before he made a frantic call to the police for help. | :00:57. | :00:58.
We believe that she went to check the | :00:59. | :01:02.
securing of the ropes against the jetty before | :01:03. | :01:05.
and at that time she slipped and fell off | :01:06. | :01:08.
Her husband then jumped in after to try to retrieve her | :01:09. | :01:18.
but unfortunately was not able to do so. | :01:19. | :01:20.
The woman was found after about 45 minutes in the water, despite | :01:21. | :01:23.
attempts to resuscitate her, she was pronounced dead in hospital. | :01:24. | :01:25.
We are here to save lives and it is very | :01:26. | :01:28.
tragic when we are unable to do that. | :01:29. | :01:30.
And certainly the crew are affected by that. | :01:31. | :01:32.
Easter is the start of the boating season on Lough | :01:33. | :01:34.
Local politicians have expressed their shock at what should | :01:35. | :01:37.
have been a happy family holiday turned so quickly into tragedy. | :01:38. | :01:40.
That shock is shared in Donegal by those | :01:41. | :01:42.
The deceased was originally from China and the | :01:43. | :01:46.
husband was originally from Strabane. | :01:47. | :01:53.
The kids would have been going to local schools here and the | :01:54. | :01:56.
local businesses and shops, they would have known the family. | :01:57. | :02:06.
Both tourists and experienced boat users are being | :02:07. | :02:15.
urged to think about their safety while out on the water. | :02:16. | :02:17.
Please do come and enjoy the beautiful lakes | :02:18. | :02:19.
and waterways of Fermanagh, but at all times, obey the rules | :02:20. | :02:22.
of the water and most importantly, always, | :02:23. | :02:24.
Do we know if she was wearing a life jacket? | :02:25. | :02:28.
At the moment, we believe she was not wearing a life jacket. | :02:29. | :02:30.
A tragic reminder that this area of natural beauty is not without its | :02:31. | :02:33.
A preliminary report on the fatal crash of the Irish Coast Guard | :02:34. | :02:45.
Rescue Helicopter 116 has found that an onboard warning system | :02:46. | :02:49.
on the aircraft did not include data relating to Blackrock Island. | :02:50. | :02:54.
The helicopter crashed into the island off the coast | :02:55. | :02:56.
of Co Mayo on 14 March, with the loss of all four | :02:57. | :03:02.
The report also contains data from the voice recorder on R116, | :03:03. | :03:06.
and the final words of the crew before impact. | :03:07. | :03:08.
Rescue 116 went missing early in the morning of the 14th of March. It had | :03:09. | :03:21.
been providing cover for another helicopter on a rescue mission. It | :03:22. | :03:25.
crashed into first Mack approximately 12 miles of the bay in | :03:26. | :03:30.
County Mayo. All four crew members on board were killed. Captain Dara | :03:31. | :03:35.
Fitzpatrick was recovered from the seat but died shortly afterwards. | :03:36. | :03:38.
The body of Captain Mark Duffy was later recovered and funerals have | :03:39. | :03:44.
been held. But to others, the winchman, remain lost at sea. This | :03:45. | :03:50.
preliminary report from the air accident investigation unit Ireland | :03:51. | :03:54.
discusses the aircraft was my early ground position and warning system | :03:55. | :03:56.
and says the systems manufacturer has told it first Mack was not in | :03:57. | :04:02.
the obstacle database and the two reign of the island was not in the | :04:03. | :04:06.
terrain database. From transcripts of the crew is not final few words, | :04:07. | :04:10.
it appears they became aware the island was ahead of them and may | :04:11. | :04:13.
have attempted to pull up and steer around it at the last moment. But | :04:14. | :04:18.
this is a preliminary report and the investigations are continuing. | :04:19. | :04:19.
Four retired police officers are considering legal action | :04:20. | :04:22.
against the Police Ombudsman after their personal | :04:23. | :04:25.
The leak came to light following the arrest of a former | :04:26. | :04:31.
ombudsman investigator over an alleged theft of sensitive | :04:32. | :04:33.
A lawyer for the officers said the Police Ombudsman had | :04:34. | :04:38.
confirmed personal details were unlawfully disclosed. | :04:39. | :04:41.
Police have begun a criminal investigation. | :04:42. | :04:46.
Sinn Fein have welcomed a move by Arlene Foster | :04:47. | :04:50.
to meet Irish speakers to, as she put it, better understand | :04:51. | :04:53.
The DUP leader said yesterday she wanted to engage with people | :04:54. | :04:57.
who don't want to use Irish as a political weapon. | :04:58. | :05:00.
This report from our political correspondent Gareth Gordon. | :05:01. | :05:06.
If you feed a crocodile, they are going to | :05:07. | :05:14.
I do intend to listen and to engage with those from the Gaelic | :05:15. | :05:27.
Irish background, those without party political baggage or indeed | :05:28. | :05:30.
It is not such a long way from Stormont to West Belfast. | :05:31. | :05:34.
In areas like this, you could not avoid | :05:35. | :05:36.
the Irish language, even if you tried. | :05:37. | :05:41.
Which, politically speaking, may be just about where Arlene | :05:42. | :05:43.
Her Irish language olive branch already seems | :05:44. | :05:59.
Anything which encourages dialogue and | :06:00. | :06:02.
conversation, which encourages increased understanding of our | :06:03. | :06:04.
shared heritage has to be positive, so as we move | :06:05. | :06:07.
should take this initiative from Arlene Foster positively. | :06:08. | :06:23.
Fresh from meeting a representative of the government this morning, | :06:24. | :06:26.
this language activist says he would like to do the same | :06:27. | :06:29.
Hopefully it is a move towards the right direction, but | :06:30. | :06:34.
what we would be asking Arlene Foster also to do would | :06:35. | :06:37.
be to scratch below the | :06:38. | :06:38.
surface, to meet with parents and schools | :06:39. | :06:40.
and go out to see what the | :06:41. | :06:42.
Irish language community is really about. | :06:43. | :06:43.
There have been a number of invitations across the sector to | :06:44. | :06:46.
Arlene Foster and I really hope she needs the right | :06:47. | :06:48.
The apparent change of tune has also chimed with the groups to | :06:49. | :06:52.
use the Irish language Centre in Derry. | :06:53. | :06:54.
It has now issued an invitation to Arlene Foster. | :06:55. | :07:02.
I thought by inviting Arlene or her representative that we would be | :07:03. | :07:05.
able to demonstrate that our work is positive. | :07:06. | :07:06.
It is in no way political and it is in no way a threat. | :07:07. | :07:10.
I think there needs to be a better understanding of the Irish | :07:11. | :07:14.
And the people involved in it, that it is not all political. | :07:15. | :07:19.
This man describes himself as an Ulster Scots writer. | :07:20. | :07:22.
He started to learn Irish after hearing it spoken | :07:23. | :07:24.
If I were speaking to Arlene, I would say why | :07:25. | :07:30.
don't you join me and learn some lessons and find out for yourself | :07:31. | :07:34.
because I think that she would be surprised at the reception that | :07:35. | :07:37.
Things could be changing at Stormont, but maybe not that much. | :07:38. | :07:44.
Polio was once a serious viral infection in the western world, | :07:45. | :07:47.
causing serious disability in its victims. | :07:48. | :07:51.
Fortunately the disease is rarely heard of here today. | :07:52. | :07:56.
But a half a century on, some local people are still trying | :07:57. | :07:59.
Our health Correspondent Marie-Louise Connolly reports. | :08:00. | :08:03.
As a young lad growing up in south Belfast in the 1950s, Bobby Docherty | :08:04. | :08:06.
Now 73, he is still coping with the illness as | :08:07. | :08:14.
They are a nuisance but they are vital. | :08:15. | :08:20.
They allow me to get about but they are heavy. | :08:21. | :08:22.
Eddie grew up in Belfast Short Strand. | :08:23. | :08:29.
He was five when polio struck, triggering a long | :08:30. | :08:31.
A wasp got into the ward and the other three | :08:32. | :08:44.
were not as bad because they were not affected | :08:45. | :08:49.
as I was and they pulled the sheets above their heads and I | :08:50. | :08:52.
had to lie there and I was petrified. | :08:53. | :08:54.
At its peak in the 1940s and 1950s, polio would paralyse or | :08:55. | :08:57.
kill over half a million people worldwide every year. | :08:58. | :09:06.
A virus that affects the muscles, here in the 1970s, | :09:07. | :09:09.
locals took part in vaccination programme. | :09:10. | :09:13.
There were two reasons for the scare. | :09:14. | :09:16.
There was the lady who was a contact and had the disease, | :09:17. | :09:19.
although she did not show symptoms and there was also a child from | :09:20. | :09:23.
Belfast who was in one of the caravan sites last week | :09:24. | :09:25.
and I think both of these cases frightened the | :09:26. | :09:27.
And more than half a century later, around 160 survivors | :09:28. | :09:31.
meet up weekly to continue the support. | :09:32. | :09:35.
In Musgrave, I was put in a plaster cast from my ankles to the | :09:36. | :09:45.
If I could comment on it, I think that was the exact | :09:46. | :09:52.
opposite of what they should have done because once the fever stage | :09:53. | :09:55.
was over they should have exercised me to get | :09:56. | :09:57.
The weekly Belfast meeting is organised by the Northern Ireland | :09:58. | :10:08.
polio Fellowship, established in 1939. | :10:09. | :10:16.
Now, in 2017, they are dealing with post polio syndrome. | :10:17. | :10:22.
I can say awful pain, but aches in parts were I thought I didn't | :10:23. | :10:25.
My left arm which was always very strong will get sore and | :10:26. | :10:29.
From my knees down now it will be like blocks of | :10:30. | :10:34.
The syndrome was recognised by professionals in the | :10:35. | :10:41.
1980s, but ad the disease has been eradicated in the West, it is not | :10:42. | :10:44.
The symptoms associated would be a general fatigue, so a | :10:45. | :10:53.
mental fatigue and a physical fatigue and also fatigue associated | :10:54. | :10:56.
with muscle wasting, weaknesses, muscle skeletal pain associated with | :10:57. | :10:58.
it and in some people you will have respiratory problems and | :10:59. | :11:00.
While there are no longer any new cases of polio in the UK, these | :11:01. | :11:07.
people are a stark reminder that the disease | :11:08. | :11:09.
is hardly gone and it is | :11:10. | :11:10.
We love spotting entertainment royalty when they pay us a visit | :11:11. | :11:20.
and and many people got a big surprise in Belfast today! | :11:21. | :11:23.
Social Media has been buzzing with an appearance | :11:24. | :11:27.
in the city by the actor Morgan Freeman. | :11:28. | :11:29.
The star of movies like The Shawshank Redemption | :11:30. | :11:31.
and Driving Miss Daisy was sighted having a stroll in the city centre. | :11:32. | :11:34.
He was also spotted in the Short Strand area, | :11:35. | :11:37.
where he was filming for a new television series. | :11:38. | :11:43.
The weather next, with Angie Philips. | :11:44. | :11:48.
Hello. Good evening. Cloud has been working into the course of today, | :11:49. | :11:55.
bringing some light showers. Through the night, it continues to close in. | :11:56. | :11:59.
It will bring more in the way of drizzly or showery rain, almost any | :12:00. | :12:03.
word. They will be some dry gaps and it is not particularly cold, with | :12:04. | :12:05.
temperatures settling between 5-7 C. temperatures settling between 5-7 C. | :12:06. | :12:10.
Tomorrow, things will brighten through the second half of Good | :12:11. | :12:13.
Friday but it is not a great start. It will still be wet. A weather | :12:14. | :12:21.
front sliding slowly west to east throughout the morning hours, | :12:22. | :12:24.
keeping it dull and dreary and quite wet for a time. Eventually, this | :12:25. | :12:26.
band of rain starts to work south into the Republic of Ireland and the | :12:27. | :12:29.
South of Scotland and England and Wales. To the south, it is mainly | :12:30. | :12:34.
dry. A breeze here. May give some bright intervals and temperatures of | :12:35. | :12:39.
16 Celsius. Cooler to the north of the rain band. Bright spells and | :12:40. | :12:44.
showers. Fairly frequent across Scotland and also over the Scottish | :12:45. | :12:49.
mountains. For Northern Ireland, it feels pressure with a north-westerly | :12:50. | :12:51.
breeze but it is also brighter. There will be some scattered showers | :12:52. | :12:54.
and many places will avoid them and there will be gaps in between. | :12:55. | :13:01.
Temperatures of 10-11 C. A chilly start on Saturday, but this could be | :13:02. | :13:04.
the best day of the eastern weekend. There will be some showers around | :13:05. | :13:07.
but dry and bright and the next weather front comes in on eastern | :13:08. | :13:12.
Sunday, bringing more cloud and the potential for some mainly patchy, | :13:13. | :13:15.
light rain and drizzle. Things become a little bit quieter again | :13:16. | :13:16.
hopefully on eastern Monday. Our next BBC Newsline | :13:17. | :13:17.
is at 6.25am in the morning You can also keep updated | :13:18. | :13:20.
