Last month, in an unprecedented move, over 40 primary is -- primary

school principals brought to parents and the department saying they were

prepared to go into budget deficit -- deficit rather than make cuts

they said would affect their pupils. The other alternative is to lose a

single classroom teaching assistant, and that will mean we cannot deliver

an education that will meet the needs of every child in our school.

That is simply intolerable, and we cannot go ahead with it. But now the

department has responded. The top finance official has written to

schools saying that deficits must be avoided, and that any actions that

can be taken are taken, to make sure that does not happen.

And that puts the focus firmly back on the school principals and the

board of governors, to decide their next move. But with absolutely no

sign of any big boost to the money schools get, it is difficult to see

how this stand-off will be resolved. Around 50 people attended a public

meeting last night in Dunmurry, to discuss the rise in the number

of drug-related deaths It was organised by families

whose children have died from taking prescription drugs

in the last month. It's the first day of this

year's Balmoral Show. Tens of thousands of people

are expected to travel to the site just outside Lisburn over

the next four days. Michael, the sun is out. Everyone is

very relaxed here at the Balmoral Show. Which for the first time in a

long time has been extended to four days, Wednesday through to Saturday.

We've already had some fantastic show jumping here, and now we are

enjoying the acrobatics of the Kangaroo kid. People have been

arriving since early morning, there has been livestock judging, people

have been looking around the fantastic machinery, there are food

stalls, plenty of delights to eight, in fact it is a perfect fun day out

for adults and children alike. With me is wander from the organisers.

What difference practically it 's four days this year mean to your?

We'll have a lot more -- we have a lot more things to put together,

we've had to redo our wholesale Joel and add more classes. We've moved

our championships to the Saturday. Why did you extend it to four days?

Really responding to people post might demand that they wanted it to

be here if they haven't had time to take time off for the show. In

previous years, we've had problems with traffic queues, and people have

complained a lot about that. Rubel wrote -- roads in and I rolled --

rural roads in and around the park. We're working very hard -- very

closely with the other agencies, with the police and the transport

companies to help us get in and out -- help them get in and out of the

park as quickly as possible, and encouraging people to take the train

to Lisburn and the shuttle bus adhere to the park. I will be here

at 6:30pm this evening, when we are getting a little bit more serious.

We are talking about the state of the farming industry, present and

future. Prince Charles and the Duchess

of Cornwall have been visiting PSNI headquarters in East Belfast

during day two of their visit. Later they'll head to the Republic,

where they'll meet the Irish Prince Charles and the Duchess of

Cornwall make their way through the PSNI memorial Garden. They stopped

to talk to families. It is their day, and the Prince is there to

officially open the garden, in memory of 13 members of the PSNI,

two of whom were killed by dissident republicans. The widow of one was

among the families attending the event. It's been a very fitting day,

a very touching day, and tinged with sadness and gladness as well. 13

names on the memorial wall. The Chief Constable is mindful of the

ongoing security threat. It is 13 to many, and we would hope that we are

still dealing in a very volatile policing environment at times, but

thankfully things have moved on. Policing is a dangerous occupation,

so we don't want to see any more names on that ball. The royal couple

have a number of other engagements in Northern Ireland, but -- before

they make their way to the Republic. -- any more names on that wall.

Rugby, and Ireland will face Scotland and the hosts

Japan in the group stage of the Rugby World Cup in 2019.

After the draw, Ireland's Jamie Heaslip said avoiding South Africa,

France and Wales was a big thing for the team.

Institute and Carrick Rangers will go into the second leg

of the promotion-relegation play-off, tied on 1-1

A place in the top tier is up for grabs.

Having finished runners-up in the Championship, it was Institute who

struck first at home. They took the lead five minutes before half-time.

But the advantage didn't take -- last long. This cross was thought --

found to be -- found to have been handled. Carrick drew level. Both

sides did push for a winner. Michael McDermott's header was cleared off

the line, while Carrick substitute's effort was ruled out for offside. It

is all to play for in Friday's second leg.

Hello there. Another day of sunshine for many parts of the UK and

Ireland. Slight change in wind direction, though, has brought this

bank of cloud close to the north coast, so there will be a little bit

of cloud flirting with the North coast at times, but this is how it

looked from Ruslan on the family earlier. Beautiful bare at the

Balmoral Show, but there is the risk of a few showers on Friday. --

beautiful there. But it is dry everywhere across Northern Ireland

today. The light onshore breeze will mean it is a little bit cooler and

cloudy at times on the north coast, with highest temperatures across

Belfast, parts of south Fermanagh 17 or 18 degrees. And of course it --

it is strong sunshine, so if you are spending long time outside perhaps

the Balmoral Show, you will need some cream. Still bits of cloud on

the north coast, but otherwise temperatures tonight could get very

low again, and there could be a touch of frost first thing in parts

of the countryside. But first looks like another fine day with plenty of

sunshine; probably the last day of unbroken sunshine. Kumar on the east

coast, but warmer tomorrow up on the north coast. Some showers around

though on Thursday night and on Friday.

Schools have been told by the Department for Education

that they must avoid planning to go into budget deficit.

The warning is in response to plans by some principals in the Belfast

area to go into the red, rather than make cuts to staff.
