That's all from the BBC News at One
- so it's goodbye from me - | 0:00:00 | 0:00:01
and on BBC One we now join the BBC's
news teams where you are. | 0:00:01 | 0:00:01
Good afternoon. | 0:00:09 | 0:00:10
A special service has been held
in Enniskillen to mark the 30th | 0:00:10 | 0:00:13
anniversary of the bombing that
claims the lives of 12 people | 0:00:13 | 0:00:17
and injured dozens more. | 0:00:17 | 0:00:19
The IRA attack was on Remembrance
Sunday as people gathered | 0:00:19 | 0:00:22
at the Cenotaph in the town
to remember the war dead. | 0:00:22 | 0:00:26
Our south-west reporter,
Louise Cullen, is in | 0:00:26 | 0:00:29
Enniskillen for us now. | 0:00:29 | 0:00:37
Today, as on every 8th of | 0:00:37 | 0:00:39
Today, as on every 8th of November
since 1987, families have adhered to | 0:00:39 | 0:00:42
remember those they had lost. 11
people were killed on the day, 12th | 0:00:42 | 0:00:47
died 13 years later, and more than
60 were injured when the bomb | 0:00:47 | 0:00:54
exploded here. Today some of those
survivors gathered here as a | 0:00:54 | 0:00:58
memorial to those killed was
unveiled. It bears all 12 names, but | 0:00:58 | 0:01:05
today Bosman unveiling the
temporary. Agreement has yet to be | 0:01:05 | 0:01:09
reached about where the memorial
will be placed. The Queen sent a | 0:01:09 | 0:01:13
message to the families, she said
the memorial was a poignant reminder | 0:01:13 | 0:01:15
of a terrible event, that she was
aware of the irreplaceable loss and | 0:01:15 | 0:01:20
profound sadness so many of the
families had suffered and she | 0:01:20 | 0:01:24
renewed her St Evita the families.
After the unveiling, -- her sympathy | 0:01:24 | 0:01:30
for the families. After the
unveiling, the families attended a | 0:01:30 | 0:01:34
memorial service and the memories
remain fresh for them. You don't | 0:01:34 | 0:01:37
think about it on a daily basis but
you know that pain is there at the | 0:01:37 | 0:01:41
back of your rain. -- back of your
mind. You learn to get through day | 0:01:41 | 0:01:50
by day. Someone just said to me, the
last year, that grief is the price | 0:01:50 | 0:01:56
of a laugh. I never thought of that
until I heard that. It truly is. -- | 0:01:56 | 0:02:02
grief is the price of love. We will
have more of the services in the | 0:02:02 | 0:02:10
news programme tonight as we reflect
on how the bomb affected Northern | 0:02:10 | 0:02:14
Ireland widely. | 0:02:14 | 0:02:16
An 18-year-old man has died
following a road crash in Portadown. | 0:02:16 | 0:02:18
The police have appealed
for information about the single | 0:02:18 | 0:02:20
vehicle collision on Dungannon Road
shortly after midnight. | 0:02:20 | 0:02:23
The police in Londonderry
are investigating an attack | 0:02:23 | 0:02:26
by masked gunmen last night. | 0:02:26 | 0:02:29
It happened at a flat
in the Altcar Park area. | 0:02:29 | 0:02:31
The man living there was unharmed. | 0:02:31 | 0:02:33
Our north-west reporter,
Keiron Tourish, went | 0:02:33 | 0:02:34
to the scene this morning. | 0:02:34 | 0:02:41
A PSNI team carried out an extensive
search of the area of Altcar Park | 0:02:41 | 0:02:44
where this incident took based last
night. The police say there were | 0:02:44 | 0:02:49
reports of a masked gang, one of
whom is believed to be armed with a | 0:02:49 | 0:02:53
gun, forcing their way inside at
10pm. Damage was caused inside. A | 0:02:53 | 0:02:58
number of windows were smashed by
the men. A man who lives in the | 0:02:58 | 0:03:02
property, who is understood to be in
his 20s and was in the flat at the | 0:03:02 | 0:03:06
time, was not injured. I also think
that the people who are carrying out | 0:03:06 | 0:03:11
these acts need to explain to the
community how they think they have | 0:03:11 | 0:03:14
the right to do these types of
attacks, they have never worked in | 0:03:14 | 0:03:18
the past and they will not work now.
This is a tight-knit community, we | 0:03:18 | 0:03:21
will come together and we have told
these people time and time again | 0:03:21 | 0:03:25
that these attacks are not welcome.
I am shocked, absolute shack, it's a | 0:03:25 | 0:03:31
nice quiet area. I grew up not far
from here and we didn't have too | 0:03:31 | 0:03:34
much bother. It's a disgrace that
people in this quiet community have | 0:03:34 | 0:03:39
to put up with this kind of
behaviour. Detectives investigating | 0:03:39 | 0:03:42
this incident have issued an appeal
for information. They want to hear | 0:03:42 | 0:03:47
from anyone who noticed any
suspicious activity in or around | 0:03:47 | 0:03:50
Altcar Park last night, to come
forward. | 0:03:50 | 0:03:53
Belfast has slipped further down
a league table of where's best | 0:03:53 | 0:03:56
to live and work among UK cities. | 0:03:56 | 0:03:59
Low wages are part of the issue
and the authors also say | 0:03:59 | 0:04:02
the collapse of the Executive
at Stormont hasn't helped. | 0:04:02 | 0:04:04
Our business correspondent
Julian O'Neill is here. | 0:04:04 | 0:04:10
Tell us more. This is an annual
index of 42 UK cities issued through | 0:04:10 | 0:04:19
the professional services firm
PricewaterhouseCoopers. It is a | 0:04:19 | 0:04:21
survey of the working population,
asking them things about income, | 0:04:21 | 0:04:27
housing affordability, and worklife
balance. Just two years ago, Belfast | 0:04:27 | 0:04:30
was ranked as high as five out of
42, last year, it slipped to 25, | 0:04:30 | 0:04:36
this year its descent has continued
and it is now ranked at number 30. | 0:04:36 | 0:04:40
The report says while it has been
good at things like job creation, | 0:04:40 | 0:04:44
low wages and poor productivity are
some of the factors behind its fall | 0:04:44 | 0:04:49
in the rankings. There is a separate
section looking at 12 cities in the | 0:04:49 | 0:04:53
three devolved regions, and that
makes even worse reading because it | 0:04:53 | 0:04:57
ranks on a Londonderry as 12 out of
12. Any real surprises in this? I | 0:04:57 | 0:05:04
don't think so. It's always good to
see where Belfast and Derry rank | 0:05:04 | 0:05:10
alongside other UK cities but
fundamentally this report reinforces | 0:05:10 | 0:05:13
the fact that Northern Ireland is
coming out of recession at a much | 0:05:13 | 0:05:17
slower rate than other parts of the
UK. We've always known things like | 0:05:17 | 0:05:24
our unemployment rate like the rest
of the UK, our economic inactivity | 0:05:24 | 0:05:28
is higher. That's not really a
surprise that we don't compare well. | 0:05:28 | 0:05:32
A couple of things worth pointing
out, the authors say that Brexit | 0:05:32 | 0:05:37
will have a profound impact on
Northern Ireland and it also says | 0:05:37 | 0:05:40
the absence of an executive has not
helped the situation. | 0:05:40 | 0:05:44
Consultants who'd accepted
they were to blame for flaws | 0:05:44 | 0:05:46
in the Renewable Heat Incentive
scheme have now told the public | 0:05:46 | 0:05:49
inquiry they went too far
in accepting responsibility. | 0:05:49 | 0:05:56
Cambridge Economic Policy
Associates, which helped design RHI | 0:05:56 | 0:06:02
and set the tariff. | 0:06:02 | 0:06:12
The legal counsel said
the Department of Trade | 0:06:12 | 0:06:14
and Investment should have spotted
that the subsidy rate was higher | 0:06:14 | 0:06:16
than the cost of the fuel. | 0:06:16 | 0:06:18
Northern Ireland had a light
work-out at Windsor park this | 0:06:18 | 0:06:20
lunchtime ahead of the home leg
of the World Cup play offs | 0:06:20 | 0:06:23
against Switzerland. | 0:06:23 | 0:06:24
Here's Stephen Watson. | 0:06:24 | 0:06:26
A final training session for
Northern Ireland ahead of what is | 0:06:26 | 0:06:29
going to be an intensive four days.
They have two games against | 0:06:29 | 0:06:34
Switzerland to try and earn a place
in the World Cup finals for the | 0:06:34 | 0:06:37
first time since 1986. And a clean
bill of health for the Northern | 0:06:37 | 0:06:42
Ireland squad today, including
defender Aaron Hughes who was | 0:06:42 | 0:06:46
originally rated doubtful. On
tonight's programme, we will hear | 0:06:46 | 0:06:48
the final thoughts of the manager
Michael O'Neill and we will have a | 0:06:48 | 0:06:53
special feature with the Evans
brothers. | 0:06:53 | 0:06:56
Now let's have a look at the weather
forecast, here's Barra Best. | 0:06:56 | 0:06:58
We had a very frosty start to the
day thanks to clear skies last night | 0:07:01 | 0:07:05
but those clear skies gave us a
cracking view of the Northern | 0:07:05 | 0:07:09
lights, particularly over County
Antrim. This was not too far away, | 0:07:09 | 0:07:16
and thank you for your photographs,
keep them coming in. No sign of that | 0:07:16 | 0:07:22
tonight, too much cloud around. That
gives us some patchy light rain and | 0:07:22 | 0:07:26
drizzle, temperatures struggling to
seven or 8 degrees in the | 0:07:26 | 0:07:29
south-westerly wind. The best of the
dry and brighter weather will | 0:07:29 | 0:07:33
probably be towards the south-east
of corner. The rest of the day sees | 0:07:33 | 0:07:38
the cloud thickening up, bringing
the odd spot of light rain and | 0:07:38 | 0:07:41
drizzle but it will become more
patchy in nature through the | 0:07:41 | 0:07:44
evening, lots of places having some
good try gaps but there will be some | 0:07:44 | 0:07:48
drizzle coming this way through the
early hours of tomorrow morning. | 0:07:48 | 0:07:52
Behind it will be colder,
temperatures into the single | 0:07:52 | 0:07:55
figures. No frost for most of us
into tomorrow morning. Tomorrow is | 0:07:55 | 0:08:01
going to get off to a dry start,
some sunshine to enjoy, a bit of a | 0:08:01 | 0:08:06
brisk westerly wind which could make
it feel fresh. Temperatures | 0:08:06 | 0:08:10
generally reaching ten or 11
degrees. Feeling a little bit cooler | 0:08:10 | 0:08:13
when you factor in the wind. A lot
of the day will be dry but towards | 0:08:13 | 0:08:17
tomorrow evening, the cloud thickens
from the west, and with the cloud | 0:08:17 | 0:08:21
there will be rain. Into the
weekend, scattered showers in the | 0:08:21 | 0:08:25
forecast, turning colder into the
wind coming in from the south-west. | 0:08:25 | 0:08:31
