Hello and welcome to South Today. A multi`million pound scam involving

:00:08.:00:15.

wine. Please arrest a woman and two men. Detectives said 200 people were

:00:16.:00:20.

conned into spending money on wind it did not exist. Also, jailed for

:00:21.:00:31.

life, the man who murdered his former landlord. And later on: Top

:00:32.:00:38.

of the Pops, the girls aiming for number one as they raise money for

:00:39.:00:51.

the Poppy appeal. Hundreds of people have been conned into investing in

:00:52.:00:55.

what police are calling a wine scam operating out of the Thames Valley.

:00:56.:00:59.

BBC South can reveal that a police investigation has been taking place

:01:00.:01:03.

into a firm based in Milton Keynes. It claimed to be a high end Bordeaux

:01:04.:01:06.

wine company, but police say the firm made three million pounds out

:01:07.:01:10.

of selling wine that didn't exist. Some elderly people had invested

:01:11.:01:15.

their life savings. Emma Vardy has this exclusive report. Raids were

:01:16.:01:18.

carried out by Thames Valley Police early today, at two properties in

:01:19.:01:21.

Essex. Officers arrested a 22`year`old man, a 23`year`old

:01:22.:01:24.

women, and a 47`year`old man on suspicion of fraud and money

:01:25.:01:27.

laundering. Police say a company called 'World Wide Wine Investments'

:01:28.:01:30.

based in Milton Keynes, claimed to have been offering customers the

:01:31.:01:32.

opportunity to invest in fine wine from Bordeax. The firm marketed

:01:33.:01:35.

itself nationally, with advertisements in the the Telegraph,

:01:36.:01:38.

and had printed brochures and a website. Investigating officers say

:01:39.:01:50.

the company had been carrying out its business from rented space in

:01:51.:01:53.

this office block in Milton Keynes. They say many victims were elderly,

:01:54.:01:57.

and had been cold`called by the firm and persuaded to invest. It was

:01:58.:02:08.

sophisticated in that they set up a scheme whereby the wine was being

:02:09.:02:14.

imported from France and people invested in it before it was

:02:15.:02:18.

bottled, which meant people had a long wait before they realised their

:02:19.:02:22.

investment, and in that time the money was shipped out of the country

:02:23.:02:28.

and they left the premises. In total, police say victims have lost

:02:29.:02:31.

more than three million pounds, some paid out large sums from their

:02:32.:02:36.

pension funds. The arrests are the first in what the police are calling

:02:37.:02:43.

a serious financial fraud. Officers say they're now trying to trace the

:02:44.:02:46.

large sums of money they believe World Wide Wine Investments made in

:02:47.:02:50.

profits and suspect much of this has been transferred abroad. Officers

:02:51.:02:53.

say the victims of this scam are spread all over the country, and

:02:54.:02:58.

that more may yet come forward. A man wanted for evading millions of

:02:59.:03:01.

pounds of tax in Germany has been arrested by a police community

:03:02.:03:04.

support officer near Swindon. The PCSO stopped him in Cricklade

:03:05.:03:07.

because he was suspicious of his car. Police then discovered a

:03:08.:03:10.

European Arrest warrant had been issued for him. He's alleged to have

:03:11.:03:16.

avoided paying more than four million pounds in tax. He will now

:03:17.:03:25.

be deported. A man from Aylesbury has been sentenced to life in jail `

:03:26.:03:35.

after shooting his former landlord with a crossbow. The Crown

:03:36.:03:38.

Prosecution Service said Russell Gill carried out a clinical

:03:39.:03:40.

execution when he killed Darrell Farnham at point`blank range at his

:03:41.:03:44.

home in June. The two men were in dispute over a drugs debt. Peter

:03:45.:03:47.

Cooke reports from Reading Crown Court. Described as a cold,

:03:48.:03:50.

dangerous and evil man Russell Gill showed no emotion today as he was

:03:51.:03:53.

found guilty of murdering Darrell Farnham. The victims family said

:03:54.:03:57.

Gill had carried out the attack with calculation and precision leaving no

:03:58.:03:59.

opportunity for self defence. The prosecution said he was an extremely

:04:00.:04:03.

dangerous man who had come to hate Mr Farnham. Darrell Farnham bled to

:04:04.:04:07.

death on his doorstep after being shot in the chest with a crossbow at

:04:08.:04:13.

his home in Aylesbury in June. His killer, 42`year`old Russell Gill,

:04:14.:04:16.

was a client, an amphetamine addict who owed Darrell Farnham ?6,000 for

:04:17.:04:20.

drugs. He claimed the death was an accident, saying he'd only gone to

:04:21.:04:23.

Farham's house on Belgrave Road to scare him. During the trial the jury

:04:24.:04:27.

heard Gill feared being attacked by Farnham over the drugs debt. He

:04:28.:04:30.

showed his nephew the crossbow saying he would get to Farnham

:04:31.:04:33.

first. He has always maintained that he killed Mr Farnham, but he has

:04:34.:04:35.

maintained that the crossbow went off accidentally, and that was

:04:36.:04:38.

clearly not the case. The evidence showed that that did not happen, and

:04:39.:04:50.

the jury saw through that. That night armed with the weapon, similar

:04:51.:04:54.

to this one, he shot Farham at point blank range. Th 44`year`old victim

:04:55.:05:00.

managed to pull the bolt out of his body and was found holding it in his

:05:01.:05:03.

outstretched hand. Sentencing Russell Gill to life with a minimum

:05:04.:05:06.

term of 24 years, the judge revealed Gill had two previous convictions

:05:07.:05:09.

for possessing offensive weapons. He said regardless of any threats made

:05:10.:05:12.

against him, Gill had no justification for the drastic steps

:05:13.:05:16.

he took to end a life. He added 'you took that lethal weapon, pointed it

:05:17.:05:33.

at his chest and killed him' . The campaign against a development of

:05:34.:05:36.

student flats in Oxford has been told it can't challenge the plans in

:05:37.:05:39.

court. Oxford University has built the flats opposite Port Meadow, but

:05:40.:05:43.

today the Campaign to Protect Rural England asked the High Court for a

:05:44.:05:45.

judicial review. That's been refused, but the university has

:05:46.:05:48.

offered to do a voluntary environmental impact assessment. An

:05:49.:05:54.

attempt is being made this evening to block the sale of an Oxford

:05:55.:05:58.

shopping centre. The West Way centre in Botley is due to be sold to a

:05:59.:06:02.

developer ` who wants to build a cinema, supermarket and student

:06:03.:06:05.

accommodation. But opponents say the scheme is too large and out of

:06:06.:06:08.

keeping with the area. Tonight the Vale of White Horse council will be

:06:09.:06:12.

asked to stop the sale. Five tower blocks in Oxford have been earmarked

:06:13.:06:15.

for multi`million pound improvements. The buildings haven't

:06:16.:06:18.

had any major work done since they were built forty years ago.

:06:19.:06:21.

Engineers have been surveying the buildings, and have needed some

:06:22.:06:23.

special skills, as Charlotte Stacey reports. This really is life on the

:06:24.:06:37.

edge. These specialist surveyors have been surveying this tower in

:06:38.:06:42.

Cowley today to see what condition it is in. It is one of several tower

:06:43.:06:45.

blocks being assessed for renovations. These ad sailors will

:06:46.:06:52.

hopefully find out what the building facades are made of, how much

:06:53.:06:58.

insulation is there and what we can do to improve the buildings for the

:06:59.:07:03.

residents. `` at sailors. As well as this tower, they will be assessing

:07:04.:07:15.

other towers. These buildings have not had a major refurbishment since

:07:16.:07:19.

they were built in the 1960s, but now Oxford City Council has

:07:20.:07:23.

allocated ?15 million to help improve them. More than 700 people

:07:24.:07:27.

live in these buildings, and it is hoped the work will give these

:07:28.:07:31.

buildings are a longer life span and make them a nicer place to live when

:07:32.:07:39.

the refurbishment start in 2015. I feel light`headed looking at that. A

:07:40.:07:42.

four`year old boy from Milton Keynes has become one of the first people

:07:43.:07:46.

in the world to undergo a pioneering bone`marrow transplant technique at

:07:47.:07:48.

Great Ormond Street Hospital. Doctors have said that the method

:07:49.:07:51.

should help with donor shortages since it does not require a perfect

:07:52.:07:54.

cell match. Helen Drew reports. Four year Mohammed Ahmed has waited four

:07:55.:07:57.

years for a bone transplant. He has a weak immune system, as did his

:07:58.:08:02.

sister who died before he was born. This is his only hope, otherwise he

:08:03.:08:11.

will die. We haven't got a chance. The treatment was carried out as

:08:12.:08:15.

part of the study at the great Ormond Street hospital. The key to

:08:16.:08:18.

the new technique is that it allows use of cells that are not a perfect

:08:19.:08:24.

match. That has applications beyond this study for other types of

:08:25.:08:32.

leukaemia that are not treated with normal chemotherapy. For Mohammed

:08:33.:08:38.

and his family, it has been a success. The hope is that this

:08:39.:08:43.

technique will help with donor shortages so that children will not

:08:44.:08:46.

have too wait years for life`saving operations. Football. All three of

:08:47.:08:52.

our regions league sides were in action last night ` but Oxford

:08:53.:08:55.

United were the only team to avoid defeat, as Swindon and MK Dons

:08:56.:08:58.

slipped up at home. Ross Heaton rounds up the action. Undefeated at

:08:59.:09:06.

the County ground since February, Swindon's home record is now over

:09:07.:09:10.

after they came unstuck against Walsall. Goals either side of

:09:11.:09:17.

half`time put the visitors on course for their win in Wiltshire. The

:09:18.:09:22.

match was over as a contest when the second goal came with 12 minutes to

:09:23.:09:27.

go. A late effort could not prevent stinging criticism from the boss.

:09:28.:09:37.

The MK Dons tasted defeat on home soil for the first time this season

:09:38.:09:40.

thanks to one of their former players. The only role of the game

:09:41.:09:50.

came from him. In League Two Oxford United were held to a goalless draw

:09:51.:09:56.

by Exeter. They failed to find a breakthrough but the major talking

:09:57.:10:01.

point was the late dismissal of this man. Two of the stars of this

:10:02.:10:10.

year's Strictly Come Dancing have been practising hard Swindon. ``

:10:11.:10:20.

near Swindon. Former Bond girl, Fiona Fullerton, and her dance

:10:21.:10:26.

parter, and one do Beck have been training at a dance studio near the

:10:27.:10:35.

M4. It was fair because I did goof up, and I did not perform it as well

:10:36.:10:41.

as I knew I could. I think the thing is, because I have been out of the

:10:42.:10:45.

business for so long, the whole performing thing I find terrifying.

:10:46.:10:49.

Fingers crossed she stays in the show. That's all from me for the

:10:50.:10:53.

moment. More from me at 10.25. Now I'll hand you over to Sally Taylor.

:10:54.:11:04.

it too fine. His defence team said the tanker was travelling too fast.

:11:05.:11:07.

They said it was an accident in which no`one was seriously hurt, and

:11:08.:11:10.

a prosecution was not proportionate. Still to come in this evening's

:11:11.:11:13.

South Today: A miracle recovery for the former Saints footballer who was

:11:14.:11:16.

fighting for his life just weeks ago. I was very close to dying.

:11:17.:11:23.

There were decisions that had to be made which I cannot comprehend.

:11:24.:11:29.

Former patients, distinguished surgeons from across the world and

:11:30.:11:32.

hospital staff gathered at Romsey Abbey today to pay tribute to a true

:11:33.:11:38.

unsung hero. Outside the medical profession, James Monro was little

:11:39.:11:44.

known. Yet his skills as a heart surgeon saved the lives of

:11:45.:11:48.

thousands, including many children. He was one of the key figures behind

:11:49.:11:51.

the world`renowned children's heart unit at Southampton General

:11:52.:12:03.

Hospital. Briony Leyland reports. The crowds were not for a

:12:04.:12:14.

celebrity. " EU 's James Monro built a pioneering reputation. `` N 30

:12:15.:12:35.

years James Monro. He did not just treat the problem or

:12:36.:12:39.

the issue. He supported you in leading a completely normal life. He

:12:40.:12:44.

helped me get into university. He also came to my wedding they see me

:12:45.:12:53.

and was extremely supportive to my family. People will not appreciate

:12:54.:13:06.

now that children's heart surgery was in its infancy when James Monro

:13:07.:13:14.

started. To get all children through these complex operations and for

:13:15.:13:17.

them to live was a remarkable achievement. The service heard how

:13:18.:13:26.

he was totally dedicated to his job. You was also a devoted father

:13:27.:13:51.

to his children. He was an amazing technician. He was

:13:52.:14:05.

an important man. Everybody loved him. We were fortunate to have him.

:14:06.:14:19.

James Monro died of prostate cancer in August. He had retired in 2004

:14:20.:14:27.

able to look back on a career that had saved and changed thousands of

:14:28.:14:38.

lives. I asked him did he miss it. He said he did not. He puts down his

:14:39.:14:44.

scalpel on his 65th birthday. He felt he had done enough.

:14:45.:15:06.

Portsmouth's game never made it to the second half thanks to the

:15:07.:15:16.

extraordinary storm at Fratton Park. This was the scene pre match as the

:15:17.:15:23.

game kicked off in dry conditions. By the time Wycombe took the lead

:15:24.:15:26.

the rain was falling, and already the pitch was very wet. Billy Knott

:15:27.:15:34.

with the goal and the slide. Portsmouth equalised right on half

:15:35.:15:37.

time, Patrick Agyemang pouncing from close range. With the conditions

:15:38.:15:41.

worsening the referee Lee Collins consulted both managers, but play

:15:42.:15:52.

continued for another few minutes. But it was apparent from these

:15:53.:15:55.

pictures just before the whistle for half time went that the conditions

:15:56.:15:58.

were unplayable. Just after the players went off for half time more

:15:59.:16:02.

lightning was seen in the sky, and then Fratton Park was subjected to

:16:03.:16:05.

sweeping wind and rain as the match was officially postponed.

:16:06.:16:17.

England's cricketers fly out later for this winter's tour of Australia

:16:18.:16:20.

and the Ashes series. Hampshire batsman Michael Carberry will be

:16:21.:16:22.

among the party. Another fine season with the bat has earned the opener

:16:23.:16:26.

his place. Also on the plane former Hampshire team mates Chris Tremlett,

:16:27.:16:29.

now with Surrey, and Kevin Pietersen.

:16:30.:16:31.

Now to the remarkable story of the former Southampton academy player

:16:32.:16:34.

who grew up playing alongside the likes of Gareth Bale and Theo

:16:35.:16:37.

Walcott but whose recovery from a life threatening illness is being

:16:38.:16:40.

described as a miracle by doctors. In August, Kyle Critchell who was

:16:41.:16:43.

playing for Weymouth Football Club, was diagnosed with a condition known

:16:44.:16:48.

as Severe Sepsis. Months of rehabilitation lie ahead, but Kyle

:16:49.:16:51.

is on the road to recovery and he's given his first interviews to the

:16:52.:17:04.

BBC's Laurence Herdman. In 2005 precautions can sign up to

:17:05.:17:12.

the youth team. But eight years later he faced his darkest hour. I

:17:13.:17:22.

went to a training game. I had a sore back. The pain was terrible. We

:17:23.:17:29.

called the paramedics. They gave me a lot of pain relief. Sepsis is

:17:30.:17:49.

accounts for 37,000 deaths in the UK every year.

:17:50.:17:58.

Very quickly he became dangerously ill. I asked my partner and brother

:17:59.:18:04.

a few questions regarding am I dying? Doctors prepared his family

:18:05.:18:16.

for the worst. He was in hiding tendency unit. It was a case of

:18:17.:18:28.

whether he should go into life support. They tried three different

:18:29.:18:43.

believing machines. `` believing. They were not expecting me to make a

:18:44.:18:48.

full recovery. It has to be a minor miracle. I am so happy to see I have

:18:49.:18:56.

come through it and hopefully I can live my life normally. Football

:18:57.:19:01.

means everything to Kyle but whether he resumes at playing spell remains

:19:02.:19:12.

to be seen. Now the focus is to get well and raise awareness of sepsis.

:19:13.:19:27.

It is our wonderful story. As a teenager he kept an appeal out of

:19:28.:19:36.

the academy team. `` Gareth Bale. Two Hampshire schoolgirls have been

:19:37.:19:39.

chosen to perform on the British Legion's first ever charity single `

:19:40.:19:43.

and it means they'll be singing in front of the Queen at the Festival

:19:44.:19:47.

of Remembrance in November. Alice Milburn from Southsea, and Florence

:19:48.:19:49.

Ransom from Petersfield competed against 1,000 other young hopefuls

:19:50.:19:52.

to become part of a five`strong girl band. Their single will go on

:19:53.:19:59.

general sale on November the 10th, but let's hear some of it for the

:20:00.:20:07.

first time. They sing in the hope we will

:20:08.:20:22.

remember them. It reminds you of them. You are singing for them.

:20:23.:20:29.

Florence is the daughter of navy officer from Petersfield. But she's

:20:30.:20:33.

also part of a five girl band, has a record deal and will sing in front

:20:34.:20:36.

of royalty at the Festival of Remembrance. I do say to myself, I

:20:37.:20:46.

am ten years old and I am recording an album and I am going to sing in

:20:47.:20:53.

front of the Queen. Not many people get to do that.

:20:54.:20:59.

She'll also be joined by 13`year`old Alice from Southsea. Like Florence,

:21:00.:21:03.

she was chosen after an X Factor`style talent`spotting

:21:04.:21:05.

competition by the Royal British Legion.

:21:06.:21:17.

Every word the girls sing is personal, because only children

:21:18.:21:20.

whose parents or siblings are in the Armed Forces could enter the

:21:21.:21:34.

competition. Military children are part of the military culture. They

:21:35.:21:44.

do not ask to be. They support people who have served four hours.

:21:45.:21:55.

`` people who have served for all of us.

:21:56.:22:00.

And on the day Alice and Florence stand up to sing in front of the

:22:01.:22:04.

Queen, millions of people will be supporting, watching and

:22:05.:22:12.

remembering. The single is called The Call (No

:22:13.:22:20.

Need To Say Goodbye). You can hear it on the one show immediately after

:22:21.:22:27.

this. Here is the weather.

:22:28.:22:34.

Not uncommon to have a thunderstorm at this time of year.

:22:35.:22:41.

It was an active band of thunderstorms. It was similar to the

:22:42.:23:00.

storm we had on Saturday and Sunday. Is there more of this to come?

:23:01.:23:07.

On Sunday night we could have more storms.

:23:08.:23:11.

Fork lightning captured by Will Evans from Mudeford Quay in Dorset.

:23:12.:23:15.

This shot of the lightning over Ryde on the Isle of Wight was taken by

:23:16.:23:19.

Steve Wright. And Charlotte Sloman who is aged 14 took this photo as

:23:20.:23:27.

the sky lit up in Hedge End. One or two showers. Most places

:23:28.:23:36.

stayed dry. The winds will stay dry tonight. Still the possibility that

:23:37.:23:53.

temperatures will fall away. I called start to the day tomorrow.

:23:54.:23:59.

Winds will increase from the Southeast. Most places will stay

:24:00.:24:12.

dry. Still a pleasant day. I dry start tomorrow night. A band of rain

:24:13.:24:22.

pushing up from the South. Temperatures stay miles despite the

:24:23.:24:29.

cloud and the rain. A wet start to the day on Friday. The front will

:24:30.:24:38.

move North and East words. Strong south`westerly winds. Some showers

:24:39.:24:50.

hit and miss. We will see sunny spells for the rest of the week.

:24:51.:24:59.

Through the course of the week it will stay and settled. We are

:25:00.:25:08.

expecting rain at times. Friday and very wet start to the day. The

:25:09.:25:24.

Southwest. Wet and windy on Sunday. Now, what can you do with a pumpkin?

:25:25.:25:35.

But what you might not think of doing is using it as a boat. But

:25:36.:25:39.

that's just what Dmitri Galitzine, who's an artist, did in Portsmouth

:25:40.:25:42.

today in one of the most bizarre world record attempts you're ever

:25:43.:25:45.

likely to see. And tomorrow, he's hoping a pumpkin will carry him even

:25:46.:25:49.

further ` all the way across the Solent in fact. Sean Killick watched

:25:50.:25:52.

his record attempt. This giant pumpkin is not our goal.

:25:53.:25:59.

This giant pumpkin is about. `` is a brought. This man wants to set a new

:26:00.:26:10.

world record. It is impressive. He set of two beat

:26:11.:26:26.

this three`minute target time. He paddled his pumpkin as if he were

:26:27.:26:35.

being chased I ghosts. He soon crossed the line but was less than

:26:36.:26:43.

three minutes? Two minutes .3 seconds. It was great. Pretty

:26:44.:26:54.

tiring. I practised yesterday. We went on a straight line this time. I

:26:55.:27:15.

am worried about ten. Tomorrow he will attempt his next

:27:16.:27:24.
