Hello and welcome to South Today from Oxford. In tonight's programme:

:00:00.:00:08.

A new generation for Mini, as the Mk3 model is launched in Oxford and

:00:09.:00:13.

secures thousands of jobs. Taking a risk behind the wheel ` why

:00:14.:00:17.

some drivers in the South are still ignoring laws about using mobile

:00:18.:00:20.

phones. And later on, we'll look ahead to a

:00:21.:00:25.

big game for Brackley Town in their first round FA Cup replay. Plus, an

:00:26.:00:28.

unforgettable moment for Oxford United's James Constable who scored

:00:29.:00:29.

his 100th goal at the weekend. It's been launched today, with much

:00:30.:00:47.

fanfare, to motoring journalists who'd gathered from around the

:00:48.:00:51.

world. But here in Oxford, the brand new Mini represents far more than

:00:52.:00:56.

simply a new take on an iconic car. BMW has invested ?500 million in its

:00:57.:01:02.

production line at Cowley. That, in turn, secures close to 4,000

:01:03.:01:05.

manufacturing and other related jobs in Oxfordshire. On top of that,

:01:06.:01:09.

today's launch is an unmistakeable sign of confidence in the Mini brand

:01:10.:01:13.

` effectively securing the future of the factory for years to come.

:01:14.:01:20.

Jessica Cooper reports. The car of the swinging 60s. Mini went on to

:01:21.:01:25.

become an iconic British brand. Today, its new look was revealed to

:01:26.:01:29.

the world. The new version is slighter longer and more fuel

:01:30.:01:39.

efficient. When you design a new car it is about getting the balance

:01:40.:01:45.

right. There is an emotional involvement with customers. One of

:01:46.:01:52.

the features that we have been working on is the design of the

:01:53.:01:56.

interior. The plant at Oxford has been home to car production for more

:01:57.:01:59.

than 100 years. During that time, the processes have changed ` 1,000

:02:00.:02:02.

robots will help to weld together the new Mini in this multi`million

:02:03.:02:09.

pound body shop. Today's announcement is very exciting. Our

:02:10.:02:17.

investment is great news. It is a very clear statement about our hopes

:02:18.:02:23.

for the future. And the new car is a great product. With car production

:02:24.:02:27.

on the rise in the UK, and more people buying new cars, the

:02:28.:02:30.

government is backing manufacturing in Oxford. I think it is incredibly

:02:31.:02:39.

good news for Oxford. I think it is incredibly good news for the

:02:40.:02:45.

workforce. It sends a message to young people about how engineering

:02:46.:02:51.

has a good future in the country. They could have invested anywhere,

:02:52.:02:55.

but they have chosen the United Kingdom. It shows that this plant

:02:56.:03:01.

has a great future. Production will start later this week, to mark what

:03:02.:03:05.

would've been the 107th birthday of Sir Alec Issigonis ` the man behind

:03:06.:03:09.

the original design. When the new Minis hit the road next year, the

:03:10.:03:13.

people behind this car believe it'll secure work in Oxford for years to

:03:14.:03:24.

come. A short time ago I spoke to motor industry expert Professor

:03:25.:03:26.

Kevin Morley ` the former MD of Rover Cars ` and asked how

:03:27.:03:29.

significant today's announcement really is. It is very significant.

:03:30.:03:43.

It is the launch of a new Mini. Hundreds of journalists come up from

:03:44.:03:46.

over the world. It was an international launch. It is built

:03:47.:03:55.

entirely. It is a classic rant. How much of a impact does it have

:03:56.:04:06.

worldwide. `` brand. It is a success because it is sold all over the

:04:07.:04:12.

world. It is very popular. Cars have been built at this plant for over

:04:13.:04:17.

100 years. Other places have come and gone but why has this place

:04:18.:04:23.

managed to keep going? I was at the centenary celebrations. It has kept

:04:24.:04:30.

up`to`date with technology. There are over 1000 brand`new robots. As

:04:31.:04:35.

it has kept up to date with technology, it has improved. The car

:04:36.:04:42.

industry has its ups and downs. Is this a good time to be thinking

:04:43.:04:49.

about buying a car? They are doing fine in the UK. The rest of Europe

:04:50.:04:58.

is doing Pooley. `` poorly. It is always a good time to buy a car in

:04:59.:05:07.

my view. But in terms of the Mini, dealers will have plenty of stock.

:05:08.:05:16.

They may be available at a discount. A court's heard how a former

:05:17.:05:19.

Oxfordshire teacher abused his pupils ` under the pretence of

:05:20.:05:22.

giving them photography lessons. Jonathan O'Brien ` seen here

:05:23.:05:25.

arriving at Chichester Crown Court ` allegedly abused children at the

:05:26.:05:27.

Oratory School near Goring during the 1980s. He denies 23 counts of

:05:28.:05:32.

indecent assault and five of gross indecency. The court heard how Mr

:05:33.:05:35.

O'Brien would give boys beer, spirits and cigarettes ` then

:05:36.:05:39.

blackmail them to remain silent. The trial continues.

:05:40.:05:47.

It's illegal ` and dangerous ` yet far too many of us seem to ignore

:05:48.:05:51.

the laws against using a mobile phone while behind the wheel. New

:05:52.:05:54.

research gathered by road safety campaign group Brake has shown

:05:55.:05:57.

thousands of people in the South have been issued with penalty

:05:58.:06:01.

points. As well as mobile phones, drivers have been stopped and

:06:02.:06:03.

charged for eating, putting on make`up and a host of other

:06:04.:06:06.

distractions while driving. Brake is highlighting the new figures to try

:06:07.:06:09.

to persuade motorists to consider what could happen, before running

:06:10.:06:13.

the risk. It was supposed to be just another bike ride, but in May last

:06:14.:06:17.

year it turned out to be Joe Wilkins's last. He was killed when a

:06:18.:06:20.

driver hit him whilst eating a sandwich at the wheel. It doesn't

:06:21.:06:25.

matter how many friends you have. It is not the same as having that

:06:26.:06:33.

person with you. Whether it be eating, drinking or using a phone,

:06:34.:06:35.

failing to concentrate whilst driving doesn't appear to be

:06:36.:06:40.

uncommon. In fact, new research by the charity Brake shows there are

:06:41.:06:43.

almost 55,000 people in our region who've got points on their licence

:06:44.:06:46.

for allowing themselves to be distracted whilst driving. When you

:06:47.:06:58.

are driving you are in control of a big chunk of metal. Even if you lose

:06:59.:07:05.

a second of attention, it can have devastating consequences. It's

:07:06.:07:09.

almost a decade since using your mobile phone whilst driving without

:07:10.:07:13.

a hands free kit became illegal. But studies show motorists who drive

:07:14.:07:16.

whilst doing something else at the wheel are up to three times as

:07:17.:07:25.

likely to crash. I had an accident when I was 23. I have been careful

:07:26.:07:33.

since. Would you drive and use your hands free? Yes. But whether you're

:07:34.:07:49.

male or female ` making or taking a call ` the message from the

:07:50.:07:54.

authorities is clear. Oxford's cycle hire scheme ` a

:07:55.:07:57.

version of London's Boris' Bikes initiative ` has been suspended

:07:58.:08:00.

after the company running it went into liquidation. It's just five

:08:01.:08:03.

months since the scheme was launched. It had been hoped that

:08:04.:08:06.

Oxonbike would be rolled out to other parts of the city if the pilot

:08:07.:08:10.

scheme was a success. Angela Walker has been at one of the main docking

:08:11.:08:13.

stations in Headington. Thornhill Park and Ride is one of the main

:08:14.:08:17.

docking stations for the Oxonbikes. The idea was to cut congestion in

:08:18.:08:21.

the area by enabling people to cycle from here to various hospital and

:08:22.:08:28.

university sites. It launched with a real fanfare in June. It's been a

:08:29.:08:32.

success. Around 500 people are registered users. But now the

:08:33.:08:38.

service has been suspended after the company Grand Scheme went into

:08:39.:08:40.

liquidation on Friday. Oxfordshire County Council say they're trying to

:08:41.:08:44.

find a replacement and that no council money has been lost because

:08:45.:08:47.

it was funded by a government grant. The Department for Transport told me

:08:48.:08:50.

that the responsibility for managing these contracts sits with the local

:08:51.:09:00.

authority. The County Council say it's too early to say when the

:09:01.:09:04.

scheme will be up and running again. Meanwhile, those who rely on it will

:09:05.:09:08.

have to find another way to get to work.

:09:09.:09:11.

A Greenpeace activist from Chipping Norton could remain in a Russian

:09:12.:09:15.

jail until at least February. Phil Ball was among a group of 30

:09:16.:09:19.

campaigners and journalists ` six of them British ` arrested following a

:09:20.:09:22.

demonstration against oil drilling in the Arctic two months ago. A

:09:23.:09:27.

court in St Petersburg today approved extending their detention

:09:28.:09:31.

while investigations continue. Greenpeace has called the legal case

:09:32.:09:34.

a "circus", and says it will leave "no stone unturned" in its attempts

:09:35.:09:40.

to have the detainees freed. Stay with us for the sport in a few

:09:41.:09:44.

minutes. We'll be reflecting a landmark for one Oxford player, and

:09:45.:09:47.

look ahead to an exciting FA cup replay for Brackley Town. With more

:09:48.:09:51.

of today's stories, here's Sally Taylor.

:09:52.:10:01.

classical composition and was twice nominated for the Mercury Music

:10:02.:10:03.

Prize. Still to come in this evening's

:10:04.:10:07.

South Today... The invasion of Portsmouth ` did

:10:08.:10:10.

anyone call a doctor to repel the aliens?

:10:11.:10:16.

It's approaching the most dangerous time for survivors of Typhoon

:10:17.:10:20.

Haiyan, according to the World Health Organisation. The peak danger

:10:21.:10:26.

period is between ten days to a month after a natural disaster.

:10:27.:10:29.

Without access to safe drinking water, the threat of disease

:10:30.:10:33.

escalates. One company in Farnham may be able to help reduce these

:10:34.:10:37.

risks, with the invention of a water purification system. We can join

:10:38.:10:42.

Georgina Windsor where the production line is busier than ever,

:10:43.:10:46.

after the WHO approached the company for help.

:10:47.:10:55.

It is all too easy to take a glass of drinking water for granted but in

:10:56.:11:00.

the Philippines now is the most critical time. In Farnham, Pure

:11:01.:11:06.

Hydration have developed a new technology that can help to improve

:11:07.:11:11.

and make water safe. This is the first aid station and here is its

:11:12.:11:16.

developer, Jon Grant. It looks like a simple bag of tricks but what does

:11:17.:11:23.

it do? Basically you have a pre`filter that will take out a

:11:24.:11:28.

larger part of sticks and stones and suchlike. The water passes down the

:11:29.:11:35.

tube into the purification module, which is a technology that is very

:11:36.:11:40.

modern and will remove bacteria, viruses and other waterborne

:11:41.:11:45.

diseases. Let's have a look to see exactly how it works. The technology

:11:46.:11:52.

happens right here. Murky water is going in. These are the water

:11:53.:11:57.

quality problems they will have in the Philippines right now. It goes

:11:58.:12:02.

into the first aid station. You pour the contaminated water in and very

:12:03.:12:09.

simply just turn on the Euro fire at the bottom and outcomes crystal

:12:10.:12:17.

clear safe drinking water. `` the purification knob at the bottom. It

:12:18.:12:25.

is tested by the London School of tropical medicine and hygiene and

:12:26.:12:34.

other schools. Thousands of these are going out this week alone but

:12:35.:12:39.

the rescuers will benefit, not just the people in the Philippines. If we

:12:40.:12:43.

take this black water out of here, show us what it does. International

:12:44.:12:50.

rescue services use this product. You can take water like this and

:12:51.:12:59.

simply by popping on the cap and squeezing the water through what

:13:00.:13:02.

comes out is fresh, clean, clear drinking water. Sadly, this

:13:03.:13:10.

technology is going out to the Philippines this week and let's hope

:13:11.:13:15.

many lives are saved. Thank you very much, Georgina.

:13:16.:13:18.

Absolutely fascinating. A council leader has said she'll

:13:19.:13:21.

write again to the Prime Minister asking for a national debate on

:13:22.:13:24.

fracking, following a meeting with protestors who've camped outside her

:13:25.:13:26.

offices. Louise Goldsmith has asked

:13:27.:13:28.

campaigners to leave West Sussex County Council's headquarters but

:13:29.:13:32.

the group Frack Free Sussex says it will stay until tomorrow at the

:13:33.:13:35.

earliest. It wants councils to reject applications by energy

:13:36.:13:45.

companies pursuing fracking. Dennis Wilson took part in what many

:13:46.:13:49.

still believe is the greatest invasion of all time, the D`day

:13:50.:13:55.

landings in June of 1944. He put pen to paper and wrote poetry. Now, all

:13:56.:14:01.

of these years later, his work has been published and he is due to go

:14:02.:14:05.

to Buckingham Palace tomorrow, invited their as a contemporary

:14:06.:14:14.

poet. What has wore down to the youth of

:14:15.:14:24.

the world? `` what has wore down. Many soldiers return from the war

:14:25.:14:27.

and never think about `` talk about what they have seen. But Dennis

:14:28.:14:33.

Wilson would sometimes exchange his rifle for a pen. He wrote poetry

:14:34.:14:41.

about the tragedies of war. It surprises me that I was able to read

:14:42.:14:48.

it without a lump in my throat, really. Ie used to write in a lull

:14:49.:15:02.

in the battle. `` are used to. He was 16 when he wrote his first poem

:15:03.:15:08.

and 22 when he was sent to Normandy. When I completed one page I posted

:15:09.:15:15.

it home to my mother in case I didn't get back. It was actually...

:15:16.:15:26.

It was one of the happiest moments of my life because I took one look

:15:27.:15:31.

at my right arm and I thought I was probably going to lose it but I was

:15:32.:15:35.

very happy because I knew I was out of it. When he got home his poem was

:15:36.:15:40.

waiting for him but it was almost 70 years before they were published.

:15:41.:15:44.

Now his work has been recognised with an invite from the palace. It

:15:45.:15:54.

is very gratifying to find that the reception is for contemporary poets

:15:55.:16:01.

and it is nice to know that is how I am regarded. What Dennis saw on the

:16:02.:16:07.

front line moved him to write. He has lived not only to tell the tale

:16:08.:16:11.

but to see it in black and white as well.

:16:12.:16:19.

Denny Wilson, finally published and off to Buckingham Palace tomorrow.

:16:20.:16:24.

He has recovered from the till June in need macro, back to the day job.

:16:25.:16:29.

We are talking about the international football.

:16:30.:16:34.

Yes, not great, the game against Chile yesterday.

:16:35.:16:43.

Lallana will start tomorrow night but Jay Rodriguez will be among the

:16:44.:16:46.

substitutes. Both players featured from the start in Friday night's 2`0

:16:47.:16:49.

defeat by Chile, with Lallana generally given good reviews on a

:16:50.:16:52.

tough night for Roy Hodgson's men. Rickie Lambert was back in training

:16:53.:16:55.

today and could feature at Wembley tomorrow night. He is recovering

:16:56.:16:58.

from a muscle strain. ? The Premier League and Championship had the

:16:59.:17:02.

weekend off, so here's the best of the rest across the Southern

:17:03.:17:04.

counties this weekend, starting with another bad day for Portsmouth.

:17:05.:17:10.

We might learn a bit about Portsmouth's character now.

:17:11.:17:16.

Therefore`0 defeat at Wimbledon came as they were slumping in the league.

:17:17.:17:22.

Andy Bartram went close to an equaliser but then it all went

:17:23.:17:25.

wrong. Three Wimbledon goals in the final 16 minutes. It was victory and

:17:26.:17:32.

a moment of history for Oxford United at Mansfield. And by the ``

:17:33.:17:40.

action packed first half saw an opening goal followed by a red card.

:17:41.:17:46.

The Stags remained in the hunt. Least Evenson fired into put the

:17:47.:17:51.

home side on level terms. James Constable, on as a substitute and he

:17:52.:17:58.

did what he does best. His 100th goal for the club. After the break

:17:59.:18:05.

Aussie winger Ryan Williams added a third, but the day belonged to the

:18:06.:18:08.

Centurion who now is only seven short of Oxford all`time scorers

:18:09.:18:11.

record. Swindon Town's promotion hopes also received a boost this

:18:12.:18:14.

weekend as they eased to victory in Essex. Goals either side of

:18:15.:18:17.

half`time from Nicky Ajose and Danny N'Guessan put Town in control

:18:18.:18:20.

against Colchester. The home side scored a late consolation, but it

:18:21.:18:23.

wasn't enough to stop Swindon moving back into the League One playoff

:18:24.:18:25.

places. Brackley town face their FA Cup

:18:26.:18:30.

replay tonight against Gillingham. They were just seconds away from an

:18:31.:18:34.

upset nine days ago in Kent, only to be denied by an equaliser deep into

:18:35.:18:38.

stoppage time. A crowd ten times its normal size is expected for the

:18:39.:18:42.

replay at St James's Park and Brackley say the revenue

:18:43.:18:50.

`` the revenue will set them up for the next three to four macro years.

:18:51.:19:13.

After seven events over three continents it came down to the final

:19:14.:19:18.

series in Brazil. Leigh McMillan and his wave Musket team were defending

:19:19.:19:22.

champions but their path to the top of the podium could hardly have been

:19:23.:19:28.

tighter. They led the season going into the final act but they were

:19:29.:19:34.

pipped to the top spot. The two teams finished level on points for

:19:35.:19:40.

the season but the Wave had won more races over the full year, giving

:19:41.:19:46.

them victory. It was such a fight and we had to be squeaky`clean today

:19:47.:19:51.

to pull it off. They were gunning for us whenever they had a chance.

:19:52.:20:02.

It was a follow`on day. This has been the seventh season of extreme

:20:03.:20:06.

sailing. The aim was to bring the sport close to the shore and

:20:07.:20:14.

spectator numbers hit 325,000. We'll McMillan and his team be back for

:20:15.:20:18.

more next year? They were thrilled with the result and they love the

:20:19.:20:23.

racing and the competition and hopefully we will all be back next

:20:24.:20:25.

year and defending for the third time. Very well done, some

:20:26.:20:33.

spectacular pictures. He is consistently one of our top

:20:34.:20:37.

performers in sailing. Great recognition for him.

:20:38.:20:44.

Did you ever hide behind the city when you heard this?

:20:45.:21:04.

DOCTOR WHO THEME PLAYS. Down the years the South has seen

:21:05.:21:09.

its share of filming action. The Sea Devils came ashore at

:21:10.:21:17.

Portsmouth Naval base. We met two men closely involved with

:21:18.:21:21.

making that episode. For Jon Pertwee, being in Portsmouth

:21:22.:21:26.

was like coming home. He had been based here in the Second World War.

:21:27.:21:32.

The story being filmed was the Sea Devils. There aim was to take over

:21:33.:21:39.

the world, starting in Portsmouth. They filmed the Sea Devils coming

:21:40.:21:42.

out of the sea so they were sort of emerging slowly out of the water

:21:43.:21:49.

onto the beach. On the sure they borrowed a whole load of sailors for

:21:50.:21:53.

this, we put up a fight and effectively got beaten. The Sea

:21:54.:22:00.

Devils is one of the most memorable stories in the 50 year history of

:22:01.:22:08.

Doctor Who. These pictures filmed in 1971 have never been broadcast. It

:22:09.:22:11.

sees them in battle with Pompey troops. The special effects

:22:12.:22:18.

department have laid on various little explosions. There is a brief

:22:19.:22:25.

clip in one of the episodes of me and the sailors walking with our

:22:26.:22:30.

hands up, surrendering to them. From the sailors' point of view it was

:22:31.:22:34.

great fun, took them out of their day`to`day routine. When the cameras

:22:35.:22:41.

stopped rolling, the sailors took the opportunity to mingle with the

:22:42.:22:46.

TV star. The filming took them from the stony beaches of Portsmouth to

:22:47.:22:48.

the sandy beaches of the Isle of Wight and straight into battle with

:22:49.:22:53.

the creatures from the deep. Inside one of the scary suits is a stuntman

:22:54.:23:02.

who laid many monsters over the years, but none as challenging as

:23:03.:23:10.

the Sea Devils. We were filming with water so we came out of the water

:23:11.:23:14.

with these loose costumes, the feet hanging off, our heads full of

:23:15.:23:22.

water, waves knocking us over, out of breath, a lot of coughing and

:23:23.:23:28.

spluttering. It was great fun. And hard work too. With his background

:23:29.:23:33.

in gymnastics, Stewart developed a special way to die, a big athletic

thought they could cut to me halfway through the backflip so all I am

doing is being shot and landing. If ever you watch the episode, they

only use half of the backflip. Ultimately, of course, the Sea

The most scary part was that it ended with the monster's head and

:24:22.:24:28.

then you popped up. All this week we have the people and

places in Doctor Who history on radio Solent. Pictures on the

:24:37.:24:38.

website. A change in the weather. We had a

:24:39.:24:55.

mild day today, the temperatures tomorrow will be half what they are

:24:56.:25:04.

today. It may have been a day in Swanage but that did not stop this

photograph. We are expecting a band of rain to

:25:16.:25:20.

push through. The colder air will sink southwards through the course

:25:21.:25:23.

of the night and through tomorrow morning. Feeling bitterly cold

:25:24.:25:27.

during the day tomorrow. Through the course of the night tonight we have

:25:28.:25:31.

a band of rain, which will eventually clear the southeastern

:25:32.:25:36.

corner of the country. Frost more likely the further north and west

:25:37.:25:42.

you are. A few showers drifting about to the South West but

:25:43.:25:46.

otherwise a dry night with temperatures in some areas down to

:25:47.:25:50.

freezing or just below. A frosty, chilly start tomorrow but the good

:25:51.:25:55.

news is lots of sunshine despite the freezing temperatures. We expect

:25:56.:26:02.

highs between four to seven Celsius tomorrow afternoon. That is half

:26:03.:26:06.

what they were today. Maybe some rain, sleet or even the odd snow

flurry. They will be few and far between. Through the course of

:26:14.:26:17.

tomorrow the winds will pick up so the northerly wind will be a key

:26:18.:26:20.

feature, taking the edge of the temperatures even more. A hard frost

:26:21.:26:28.

through the night into Wednesday, temperatures dropping to minus three

:26:29.:26:36.

Celsius. Increasing cloud from the north and west is working its way in

:26:37.:26:40.

and that will mean Wednesday will be slightly milder. A bit of a soggy

:26:41.:26:46.

day with increasing winds. You can see them coming in from the North

:26:47.:26:50.

West. This weather front drifting further southwards. A wet and pretty

:26:51.:26:58.

windy day all in all. This is the outlook for the rest of the week, a

:26:59.:27:04.

lovely day tomorrow but very chilly, and a strong north`westerly wind.

:27:05.:27:09.

Some rain by Wednesday, with gusty winds. Slightly milder but turning

:27:10.:27:14.

cooler Thursday or Friday. Thursday and Friday mainly dry.
