Louise, thank you. That's all from the BBC | :00:00. | :00:09.
In tonight's programme, second woman's body is discovered in a | :00:10. | :00:14.
house, a week since a woman in her 50s was found dead in the same | :00:15. | :00:17.
property. They thought to be mother daughter. Also tonight, the smoke | :00:18. | :00:22.
that has affected large part of Swindon. | :00:23. | :00:24.
How a fire on an industrial estate could take days to be fully | :00:25. | :00:30.
extinguished. Later, a childhood shaped by war. | :00:31. | :00:33.
The reunion of evacuees packed off to new families. | :00:34. | :00:45.
Good evening. Police carrying out investigations at a house in Oxford | :00:46. | :00:49.
after a woman was found dead there a week ago have found a second body. | :00:50. | :00:52.
They say it's that of another woman, aged in her seventies. The body of | :00:53. | :00:56.
the first woman was found in the house in Littlemore last Thursday. A | :00:57. | :00:59.
postmortem examination was unable to establish how she died. Jessica | :01:00. | :01:03.
Cooper has been following the story. More than 50 | :01:04. | :01:09.
police first came to this house on Cowley Road in Littlemore last | :01:10. | :01:13.
Friday after receiving a call from environmental health teams about the | :01:14. | :01:16.
safety of the structure of the building, and complaints from | :01:17. | :01:20.
members of the public. After searching the property, they found | :01:21. | :01:25.
the body of a woman, believed to be 52 years old. After they | :01:26. | :01:28.
investigated further, they have returned to the property earlier | :01:29. | :01:31.
today to search again. They could get inside `` because it had been | :01:32. | :01:37.
made structurally safe. They found the body of a second woman, believed | :01:38. | :01:42.
to be 78 years old, and understood to be the mother of the woman who | :01:43. | :01:45.
was found last week. Police are keen to stress that these deaths are not | :01:46. | :01:51.
being treated as suspicious. It is unexplained because we do not know | :01:52. | :01:54.
the cause of death. It appears the bodies have been dead for some | :01:55. | :01:59.
time, and the police will be carrying out an investigation. I | :02:00. | :02:01.
would like to say to the public in the area that we are not looking for | :02:02. | :02:06.
anybody else in relation to this investigation. The house is now | :02:07. | :02:09.
structurally sound and is not a risk to anybody who may be walking past. | :02:10. | :02:13.
Police believe these women may have been dead for some time. A | :02:14. | :02:17.
postmortem carried out on the body of the 52`year`old woman was unable | :02:18. | :02:22.
to determine how she died. They say they will continue investigating and | :02:23. | :02:28.
further tests will be carried out to find out what caused their deaths. | :02:29. | :02:35.
More than 50 firefighters have been tackling a blaze at an industrial | :02:36. | :02:37.
site in Swindon. 750 tonnes of recycling material is still alight | :02:38. | :02:41.
this evening. Victoria Cook reports. It started at around eight o'clock | :02:42. | :02:45.
last night. The smoke rose so high it could be seen for miles across | :02:46. | :02:48.
Swindon. Inside, mountains of builders' waste burned. Nearly 24 | :02:49. | :02:55.
hours later, it's still burning. In fact, it's so fierce, fire crews | :02:56. | :02:58.
have decided to turn off the pumps and allow it to burn itself out. We | :02:59. | :03:08.
are stopping it getting to any more material, stopping it from feeding | :03:09. | :03:11.
itself, and we are protecting surrounding areas. Over time, it | :03:12. | :03:17.
will self extinguish. This will probably be just as quick as if we | :03:18. | :03:20.
try to pour lots and lots and lots and lots of water on it. What caused | :03:21. | :03:25.
this fire isn't known yet. It hasn't caused any injuries, but it has | :03:26. | :03:28.
caused disruption. The fire is burning just metres from the railway | :03:29. | :03:31.
line into Swindon. Smoke is currently forcing drivers to pass | :03:32. | :03:39.
through the area slowly. Last night, when the fire started, all trains | :03:40. | :03:42.
were stopped, and we hope we don't have to do that again, but we might | :03:43. | :03:46.
well have do, in which case, we have the cooperation of the train company | :03:47. | :03:49.
for that. Smoke from the fire can be smelt right across the town centre. | :03:50. | :03:53.
The Environment Agency have been on site assessing the risk to health. | :03:54. | :03:56.
They've advised locals keep windows shut. Fire crews say this fire is so | :03:57. | :04:04.
big, they are going to be here for a least another 48 hours, but probably | :04:05. | :04:07.
they will be here over the weekend to. | :04:08. | :04:10.
The group of doctors that's responsible for buying most of | :04:11. | :04:13.
Oxfordshire's health care has confirmed it will bust its budget | :04:14. | :04:16.
this year. The Clinical Commissioning Group says it's likely | :04:17. | :04:19.
to be ?6 million overspent by the end of the financial year, because | :04:20. | :04:22.
too many of its patients are being treated in our hospitals. Our | :04:23. | :04:27.
political reporter Helen Catt has been looking at the figures. Thank | :04:28. | :04:33.
you. Just two months ago, the CCG had | :04:34. | :04:36.
thought it could see out the financial year with ?65,000 left. | :04:37. | :04:40.
Now, in the best case, it's looking at a ?2.5 million pound overspend ` | :04:41. | :04:43.
and at the worst, ?13.8 million. The reason is that many more people are | :04:44. | :04:46.
being treated in Oxfordshire's hospitals than it had budgeted for. | :04:47. | :04:51.
The CCG says coming clean now to NHS England about the possible overspend | :04:52. | :04:54.
means it won't have to take any drastic measures like cancelling | :04:55. | :05:03.
operations. By declaring this deficit position, it means that we | :05:04. | :05:07.
have two a degree bought some time to work with the money we've got to | :05:08. | :05:13.
really deliver the best care we can. The downside is, we will carry that | :05:14. | :05:20.
deficit, that ?6 million, 1% of what we have, into next year, which means | :05:21. | :05:23.
that next year, we will have even bigger challenges than it might have | :05:24. | :05:27.
done otherwise. We're now approaching what's traditionally the | :05:28. | :05:29.
busiest time of the year for health care. The government has given | :05:30. | :05:32.
Oxfordshire ?10.2 million to deal with extra "winter pressures". To | :05:33. | :05:36.
make sure it doesn't overspend even more, the CCG will have to hope | :05:37. | :05:39.
that's enough to cover increased demand. If its budget overspend | :05:40. | :05:43.
starts creeping up towards 2%, it's possible that NHS England will | :05:44. | :05:46.
decide to step in. In extreme cases, that can mean sacking senior | :05:47. | :05:49.
executives and even taking over the running itself. Geraldine. | :05:50. | :05:58.
Thank you. People being caught drink driving in | :05:59. | :06:00.
Oxfordshire are, on average, almost double the drink drive limit. The | :06:01. | :06:04.
figures show over the last three years, those who were caught scored | :06:05. | :06:07.
an average of 69 on a breathalyser when the limit is 35. Tom Turrell | :06:08. | :06:12.
reports. A fatal road accident in 2010. One | :06:13. | :06:16.
woman lost her life. The driver was drunk and was sent to prison for | :06:17. | :06:20.
more than six years. Recently, our police force ` Thames Valley ` have | :06:21. | :06:23.
been catching around 2,000 to 2,500 drink drivers every year. But the | :06:24. | :06:27.
BBC has uncovered some new statistics. Thankfully, my reading | :06:28. | :06:33.
was zero, but of all the people caught drink driving in the Thames | :06:34. | :06:36.
Valley area, the average person was found to be almost double the drink | :06:37. | :06:41.
drive limit. The charity Drink Driver Education is based near | :06:42. | :06:46.
Henley. So why are people simply knocking back too much? Some people | :06:47. | :06:52.
just couldn't care less. They get in their car after three, fall five | :06:53. | :06:58.
points, they just don't care, and they drive. At the other end of the | :06:59. | :07:01.
spectrum, there are people who don't realise they are over. They think | :07:02. | :07:05.
they are OK. If you ask them on a normal day, do you drink drive, they | :07:06. | :07:08.
would say no, of course not! And yet, the end of been caught. So what | :07:09. | :07:12.
is too much? Well, an alcopop like this contains just over a unit of | :07:13. | :07:16.
alcohol, a large glass of wine 3.5 units and a pint of lager more than | :07:17. | :07:20.
2.5 how should units. So what do people consider an acceptable amount | :07:21. | :07:26.
before getting behind the wheel? A pint and a half of low alcohol beer. | :07:27. | :07:32.
Maybe a pint of stellar, or a glass of wine. I would never have more | :07:33. | :07:37.
than a small white wine, and if I had my grandchild with me, I would | :07:38. | :07:40.
drink nothing at all. Thames Valley Police will soon launch their | :07:41. | :07:43.
Christmas drink drive campaign and they'll be hoping for a quiet | :07:44. | :07:50.
Christmas. The former Gloucestershire coroner Alan Crick | :07:51. | :07:55.
Moore has been jailed for two years the stealing almost ?2 million from | :07:56. | :07:59.
clients at his solicitor practice. In many cases, the money was taken | :08:00. | :08:02.
from the dead after he was given control of their estates. The | :08:03. | :08:05.
57`year`old spent it funding a luxury lifestyle, expensive | :08:06. | :08:09.
holidays, fine wine and food. He didn't work of the coroner during a | :08:10. | :08:13.
police investigation, and resigned after admitting his guilt. | :08:14. | :08:16.
The MP of a Swindon man who died after taking a so`called legal high | :08:17. | :08:19.
says he will fight to have it banned. 23`year`old Christopher | :08:20. | :08:22.
Scott took tablets of AMT on a night out. He died days later. On Tuesday | :08:23. | :08:26.
the Coroner said he would be writing to the government asking for a ban. | :08:27. | :08:30.
Mr Scott's family are meeting their MP tonight to discuss the issue | :08:31. | :08:39.
further. The message is clear ` legal does not mean safe. Very | :08:40. | :08:43.
often, these are dangerous drugs, and they are mixed with other | :08:44. | :08:47.
illegal drugs, and as we have seen, in this tragic case, they can cause | :08:48. | :08:48.
death. More than 100 campaigners angry at | :08:49. | :08:52.
proposals to close up to 37 of Oxfordshire's children's centres | :08:53. | :08:54.
have demonstrated outside County Hall. They handed in a | :08:55. | :08:57.
15,000`signature petition, which has been signed by David Cameron, to the | :08:58. | :09:02.
council leader. Ian Hudspeth said no final decision has been made. No | :09:03. | :09:12.
decisions have been taken. There was a map that came out with a worst | :09:13. | :09:15.
case scenario, but no decisions have been taken yet. Obviously, listening | :09:16. | :09:19.
to people, we must be very careful to make sure we don't just flipped | :09:20. | :09:23.
one decision. We have to make ?60 million worth of savings in the next | :09:24. | :09:29.
four years. People feel hugely strongly about children's centres. | :09:30. | :09:32.
The other centre of communities for many people. They provide community | :09:33. | :09:35.
can even, everybody comes together in a way they might not somewhere | :09:36. | :09:39.
else, and they are a place where you can get help and support from a | :09:40. | :09:41.
number of different agencies with everyone working together. If you | :09:42. | :09:46.

That's all from me for the moment. I'll have the headlines at eight and | :09:59. | :10:02.
a full bulletin at 10.25. Now more of today's stories with Sally | :10:03. | :10:03.
Taylor. suffering depression and anxiety and | :10:04. | :10:05.
more are in the pipeline. There'll soon be apps patients can use on the | :10:06. | :10:10.
move too. Still to come in this evening's | :10:11. | :10:13.
South Today: You can't avoid it ` Christmas is coming. Tonight, | :10:14. | :10:16.
children shine a light as they parade through Winchester with their | :10:17. | :10:23.
lanterns. Last week, we reported on child | :10:24. | :10:26.
poverty in Reading and a conference to discuss ways of tackling the | :10:27. | :10:30.
issue. One measure to emerge was a move by the council to ban adverts | :10:31. | :10:33.
from payday loan companies, along with other products deemed | :10:34. | :10:37.
unethical. But will it make a difference? Tonight, there's | :10:38. | :10:40.
uncertainty about whether the council has any say over the adverts | :10:41. | :10:44.
on the side of bus stops it owns. Joe Campbell reports. | :10:45. | :10:56.
The characters are instantly recognisable, the adverts seemingly | :10:57. | :11:00.
everywhere. But not here, if the council has its way. Reading is not | :11:01. | :11:06.
short of those offering a little extra cash at a higher interest | :11:07. | :11:11.
rate. But the council wants to ban these adverts, . I think it's a good | :11:12. | :11:21.
thing that you can't advertise people like wonder, because you stop | :11:22. | :11:28.
people being tempted. I don't think it was good to advertise these | :11:29. | :11:35.
things. It stops encouraging people to do these things. Not much sign of | :11:36. | :11:41.
the adverts on these buses today. They have already told Wrangler the | :11:42. | :11:50.
business is not wanted. `` Wrangler. So how easy will it be for the | :11:51. | :11:53.
council to call time on some ads like these? This past may belong to | :11:54. | :11:59.
the council, but it doesn't own the shelter. That was put up by a | :12:00. | :12:03.
private contractor in return for the advertising space. But the council | :12:04. | :12:08.
is able to do to restrict who can advertise on sites like this, that | :12:09. | :12:13.
remains open for debate. One of the town's Conservative MPs has warned | :12:14. | :12:19.
Harding advertisers could mean higher travel fears. They have | :12:20. | :12:22.
already been questions as to whether the council should be interviewing | :12:23. | :12:28.
into what has been a free market. I think local authorities have a wider | :12:29. | :12:31.
role in terms of the health and well`being of the people who live in | :12:32. | :12:35.
their areas, I think we have a different dream it from other | :12:36. | :12:39.
people. I hope the government might follow suit nationally with this as | :12:40. | :12:46.
well. We have had bans on tobacco advertising is for the many years, | :12:47. | :12:50.
so I don't see why this is different. This will be decided next | :12:51. | :12:58.
week. A Havant man has been charged with | :12:59. | :13:01.
assisting an offender following the murder of a 27`year`old father last | :13:02. | :13:05.
year. Simon Warton was stabbed after a disturbance at a party in | :13:06. | :13:07.
Waterlooville. In December, Sean Bailey was jailed for life for his | :13:08. | :13:10.
murder. Today, 24`year`old Robert Cahill was charged for assisting an | :13:11. | :13:14.
offender, after he hid Bailey in his flat in Havant and bought him food | :13:15. | :13:17.
and clothing to avoid his arrest. The trial continues. | :13:18. | :13:23.
A Dorset prison is to become a resettlement facility ` allowing | :13:24. | :13:26.
offenders to be housed in a familiar area before they're released. The | :13:27. | :13:29.
decision to make HMP Portland the resettlement centre for Dorset | :13:30. | :13:31.
follows an earlier move to close Dorchester prison. Many offenders | :13:32. | :13:34.
are moved to resettlement prisons close to the area where they live, | :13:35. | :13:38.
three months before the end of their sentence. | :13:39. | :13:41.
There's two key things that stop offending. One is family support and | :13:42. | :13:47.
the other is services that myself and others provide being put into | :13:48. | :13:50.
prisons before they are released to make sure that people have something | :13:51. | :13:55.
to come out to, a pathway. And by giving us Portland Prison as a | :13:56. | :13:58.
resettlement prison, we've got Dorset prisoners coming out into | :13:59. | :14:06.
Dorset. The developers behind plans for 1400 | :14:07. | :14:09.
new homes near Botley in Hampshire have been given the official green | :14:10. | :14:12.
light. Eastleigh Borough Council today issued a decision notice | :14:13. | :14:14.
permitting the development at Boorley Green. The new homes and | :14:15. | :14:18.
community facilities, including a new primary school, will be built on | :14:19. | :14:22.
a green field site. It's been the subject of fierce opposition. | :14:23. | :14:24.
Campaigners now have six weeks in which to challenge the decision. | :14:25. | :14:30.
A mother from Horsham has attracted 13,000 signatures for a petition | :14:31. | :14:33.
calling for better public toilets for severely disabled children in | :14:34. | :14:39.
the West Sussex town. Parents say ordinary disabled toilets don't have | :14:40. | :14:42.
a bench and hoist, so children and adults with severe disabilities | :14:43. | :14:45.
usually end up being changed on the floor. The local council says it's | :14:46. | :14:48.
trying to find a suitable town centre location for the sort of | :14:49. | :14:55.
facility the parents want. Sean Killick reports. | :14:56. | :15:02.
Parents of children with severe disabilities meeting for coffee. | :15:03. | :15:06.
They seem no in the town centre is there a disabled lavatory suitable | :15:07. | :15:12.
to take their children to change them. This mother posted on the | :15:13. | :15:18.
internet a photograph of her husband changing their son in a local | :15:19. | :15:22.
disabled toilet, and in three days, a campaign was at and running and | :15:23. | :15:31.
has attracted 13,000 signatures. Usually, disabled children are | :15:32. | :15:36.
high`risk for catching infections, and might be hospitalised. | :15:37. | :15:40.
Obviously, if your child is touching the floor in a toilet, and germs are | :15:41. | :15:46.
all over you, and they are at a very high risk of becoming ill. It can be | :15:47. | :15:53.
very life`threatening. Parents and a lack of facilities in Horesham is | :15:54. | :15:59.
causing them to shop elsewhere. Michael to Bluewater, because they | :16:00. | :16:04.
have facilities. We have maps of the locations that allow us to change | :16:05. | :16:10.
our children in suitable facilities. Kerry showed me a toilet in a | :16:11. | :16:17.
leisure centre which the parents they became the facility they need | :16:18. | :16:21.
in the town centre. The hoist is the main feature, because this saves the | :16:22. | :16:29.
caregiver's back primarily. Horsham District Council told us that there | :16:30. | :16:35.
is another toilet in a local leisure centre, and we're planning a third, | :16:36. | :16:41.
but they accept that one in a more central location the desirable. They | :16:42. | :16:45.
say they are working with parents to find one. | :16:46. | :16:48.
You've been having your say on this issue ` so here are some comments | :16:49. | :16:52.
from our Facebook page. Allan Marsh says it's a great idea but the | :16:53. | :16:55.
increased expense will just see more toilets being closed and they are | :16:56. | :16:58.
slowly disappearing already. Toilets are a necessity not a luxury, | :16:59. | :17:01.
insists Joyce Salter. It sounds good in principle, says Annie | :17:02. | :17:04.
Christopher, but the campaigner should be asked to work out a way of | :17:05. | :17:10.
funding it. Think it through to its conclusion, not just banner`wave to | :17:11. | :17:12.
shame them into action. Very necessary measure, declares Pat | :17:13. | :17:16.
Ilsley. I wouldn't want to lay on a public toilet floor. Would you? And | :17:17. | :17:20.
if you've got a view on this or other stories, then you can add your | :17:21. | :17:24.
thoughts to the South Today Facebook page. Thank you very much for all | :17:25. | :17:29.
your comments. There's also a chance to catch up on some of our films ` | :17:30. | :17:33.
including last night's story about the dinosaur skeleton auction ` as | :17:34. | :17:36.
well as galleries of the weather pictures you send in. | :17:37. | :17:45.
More than half of all delays on the rail network are due to Network Rail | :17:46. | :17:49.
and not the train operators, according to new figures. In the | :17:50. | :17:52.
last week alone, there have been major signal failures through the | :17:53. | :17:55.
Thames Valley and on Southern services into London, leading to | :17:56. | :17:58.
long delays for tens of thousands of passengers. Although Network Rail is | :17:59. | :18:00.
currently renewing track between Salisbury and Andover, the Rail | :18:01. | :18:03.
Regulator says it is under`spending on maintenance and could face a | :18:04. | :18:06.
substantial fine. It's been revealed all Gatwick | :18:07. | :18:09.
Express services between the airport and London will be cancelled between | :18:10. | :18:16.
Christmas and New Year's Day. Essential engineering work is due to | :18:17. | :18:20.
take place on the line. The period following Christmas Day will also | :18:21. | :18:22.
see disruption on Cross Country trains, running between Reading and | :18:23. | :18:25.
Basingstoke. And many services through the Thames Valley will | :18:26. | :18:28.
switch to bus because the Western mainline will be closed between | :18:29. | :18:33.
Slough and Paddington. Now, there's a lot of choice when it | :18:34. | :18:37.
comes to coffee. Many drinkers choose Fairtrade varieties because | :18:38. | :18:39.
it gives extra help to producers, and one Hampshire coffee shop is run | :18:40. | :18:43.
as a charity to support slum children in Kenya. But the trustees | :18:44. | :18:47.
of Asante in Chandler's Ford say their work is being put at risk | :18:48. | :18:50.
because a neighbouring supermarket is giving away free hot drinks. Ena | :18:51. | :19:03.
Miller reports. Whatever happens in this skill in | :19:04. | :19:06.
Kenya is directly affected by what happens in this coffee shop. All the | :19:07. | :19:12.
profits go towards educating 300 children living in the slums of | :19:13. | :19:17.
Kenya. Last year, they released the scheme does and pains. This year, | :19:18. | :19:22.
they say they will be lucky to cover their overheads. They claim a local | :19:23. | :19:27.
supermarket is fishing the `` forcing them out of business. | :19:28. | :19:33.
Waitrose have been offering a deal which says that you can have a free | :19:34. | :19:38.
copy every day. We are now on to our contingency fund. Which loyalty card | :19:39. | :19:48.
holders can get a free hot drink. That is a charity place, isn't it? | :19:49. | :19:53.
Yes, that is not clear. Do you feel bad? A bit guilty, perhaps. I don't | :19:54. | :20:01.
feel strongly one way or another, really. Would you think about local | :20:02. | :20:07.
office shops that are suffering? I haven't thought about that, because | :20:08. | :20:12.
I shop at Waitrose. Waitrose say they are doing nothing new and | :20:13. | :20:16.
always raise money for charity. The branch gives ?1000 per month to | :20:17. | :20:21.
charity through their token scheme. A similar case was reported in | :20:22. | :20:26.
Buckinghamshire, where a coffee shop owner went to the Office of Fair | :20:27. | :20:30.
Trading, but they came back and said that Waitrose had not broken any | :20:31. | :20:34.
rules, and for not doing anything wrong. The thing is, what is | :20:35. | :20:40.
competition? If something is being given away free, that is not | :20:41. | :20:45.
competition. That is changing the market. I don't think Waitrose have | :20:46. | :20:49.
thought this through, that what they are doing is killing something that | :20:50. | :20:54.
is a community`based business. It is the power of coffee extends beyond | :20:55. | :21:05.
the cup. It affects lives too. Do I see it, Christmas is less than a | :21:06. | :21:09.
month away, and Christmas market are springing up all over the south, | :21:10. | :21:14.
including in Winchester. Children's Lantern Festival is happening | :21:15. | :21:21.
tonight. Sarah is amongst them. I am surrounded by beautiful | :21:22. | :21:28.
handmade lanterns, more than 150 at this year's Lantern Parade. It is | :21:29. | :21:33.
the sixth year, and this time around, they have given it its own | :21:34. | :21:38.
event which is a magnificent view. There are angels, snowmen, presents, | :21:39. | :21:45.
lots and lots of festive things. But whenever angels is Miranda Hart, the | :21:46. | :21:52.
comedian. Lots of hard work have gone into this. Let's chat to them. | :21:53. | :21:58.
Which one is your Lantern? I did that one. His name is Steve. That is | :21:59. | :22:04.
from a computer game? And is it echoed like this? Yes. Ladies, you | :22:05. | :22:11.
have a beautiful star. Tell me about this one. We chose it because it is | :22:12. | :22:16.
a simple design, and it looks beautiful. Whether any arguments | :22:17. | :22:23.
about this? Not really. We all like the same idea. Fantastic. And here | :22:24. | :22:30.
we have a beautiful cat. How long did that take to make? We took about | :22:31. | :22:37.
two hours each weekend, so about four hours in total. Very well done, | :22:38. | :22:43.
it looks fantastic. Things are starting to feel very festive here | :22:44. | :22:49.
indeed, and it is not even December! | :22:50. | :22:51.
Sailor, I understand there is a competition as to best Lantern? | :22:52. | :22:54.
That's going to be very tough, isn't it? | :22:55. | :22:57.
Yes, a tricky one to decide, there are so many wonderful lanterns. I | :22:58. | :23:05.
saw a champagne bottle, which was wonderful. | :23:06. | :23:09.
Yes, that's one that you would have picked out! Will come back to you | :23:10. | :23:15.
for the weather. Evacuees who were forced to leave | :23:16. | :23:18.
their homes in Southampton during the Second World War have come | :23:19. | :23:21.
together to share their experiences. More than three million children | :23:22. | :23:24.
were moved from cities in the UK under Operation Pied Piper. Its aim | :23:25. | :23:28.
was to keep them safe from bombing. And as James Ingham reports, those | :23:29. | :23:31.
memories of leaving their families behind remain as vivid as ever. | :23:32. | :23:34.
So, it's goodbye to the cities and danger areas. Labelled and loaded | :23:35. | :23:40.
and not forgetting their gas masks, the children head for the... In | :23:41. | :23:43.
cities across the country, these heartbreaking scenes were the same. | :23:44. | :23:45.
Bewildered and confused, children were packed off to an uncertain | :23:46. | :23:52.
future. I was chosen by this lady who turned out to be a very strict, | :23:53. | :23:59.
Victorian person. I can't remember ever being kissed or cuddled or | :24:00. | :24:04.
anything like that. Lucy remembers a difficult time living in Somerset, | :24:05. | :24:09.
and little contact with home. I was there for four years and I saw my | :24:10. | :24:13.
parents for one day every six months. What the children have got | :24:14. | :24:19.
today, you think, my goodness, they have no idea what homesickness is. | :24:20. | :24:27.
Everyone at this reunion had vivid memories of the evacuation. All told | :24:28. | :24:31.
me how painful it was leaving their families. But Jean was lucky ` | :24:32. | :24:34.
welcomed by her carer with open arms. Oh, poor little thing, she | :24:35. | :24:39.
said, come here! And she gathered us into her house. It was lovely. She | :24:40. | :24:46.
really, really looked after us. Alan and Beryl didn't know each other | :24:47. | :24:50.
then, but they were on the same boat to Canada, which was torpedoed and | :24:51. | :24:57.
which ended their brief evacuation. I had a sister who was four years | :24:58. | :25:02.
younger than me. I was 12 and she was eight. I said, what do you want | :25:03. | :25:07.
to do, go on the next boat? And she started crying and said, no, I want | :25:08. | :25:11.
to go home to mummy. And that... I was greatly relieved at that, so we | :25:12. | :25:14.
came home. So many memories shared from a childhood shaped by war. | :25:15. | :25:29.
Let's return to Winchester now and join Sarah. Let's get the latest | :25:30. | :25:36.
weather. The weather has been kind to the | :25:37. | :25:39.
parade today, and if you look at the satellite from earlier on, you can | :25:40. | :25:44.
see the thickest of the cloud eventually sink southwards, but all | :25:45. | :25:49.
of us have had a gloomy day. It looks like we stick with that cloud | :25:50. | :25:53.
coverage through tonight as well. We could see some patchy nest and maybe | :25:54. | :25:58.
some light drizzle, secular life through higher ground. Temperatures | :25:59. | :26:03.
will be relatively mild with six or seven degrees appearing. It looks | :26:04. | :26:09.
like a gloomy start for tomorrow morning as well, so we start on the | :26:10. | :26:14.
grey and misty theme, but the cloud will eventually start to break up. | :26:15. | :26:19.
Achieving both ease away, and into Friday, we'll start to see things | :26:20. | :26:24.
cheer up. In fact, we could see some brighter skies and sunny spells, but | :26:25. | :26:29.
feeling a little chilly in the north westerly wind. It will feel rather | :26:30. | :26:32.
fresh indeed. Temperatures probably will peak around ten degrees. So, | :26:33. | :26:42.
looking ahead to tomorrow, not a great deal changes, we may see some | :26:43. | :26:46.
showers in the East, but for the most part, clear spells overheads | :26:47. | :26:52.
with the breeze around, so temperatures of four or five | :26:53. | :26:56.
degrees. Probably not too much frost overnight. I chilly start to the | :26:57. | :27:04.
weekend, and fact `` in fact, some sunny and breezy days, and into | :27:05. | :27:13.
Saturday, cloud will increase and Sunday could be very chilly to start | :27:14. | :27:19.
with with perhaps even some frost. It's a cloudy start next week, with | :27:20. | :27:23.
the potential for colder conditions later in the | :27:24. | :27:27.
zero, enjoy the rest of the evening among the lanterns. Tomorrow, I have | :27:28. | :27:39.
been foraging, and we will find out the dos and don'ts with an expert. | :27:40. | :27:42.
That's all from us. Good night. | :27:43. | :27:48. |
