Hello, and welcome to South Today from Oxford. In tonight's programme: | :00:00. | :00:09.
The rising cost of rail travel. How the New Year will bring new prices ` | :00:10. | :00:13.
with some commuters paying ?140 more for their season tickets. | :00:14. | :00:19.
Also tonight ` hoping for the gift of life. The 3`year`old boy who | :00:20. | :00:21.
needs multiple organ transplants because his liver, pancreas and | :00:22. | :00:27.
bowel are failing. And later on, popping the question | :00:28. | :00:30.
whilst Christmas shopping, but does she say yes? | :00:31. | :00:45.
The news was widely expected, but an increase in rail fares from the | :00:46. | :00:51.
start of next year was never going to be welcomed by regular commuters | :00:52. | :00:54.
` many making their final journeys today before the Christmas break. | :00:55. | :00:57.
First Great Western and Chiltern Railways have confirmed their price | :00:58. | :01:00.
rises, and Cross Country is also expected to confirm an increase | :01:01. | :01:06.
shortly. But the fares are not rising as steeply as they might have | :01:07. | :01:09.
done, after the Government imposed new rules and a cap, linking future | :01:10. | :01:13.
increases to the rate of inflation. Adina Campbell reports. The trains | :01:14. | :01:23.
themselves might not always arrive on time, but the annual fee increase | :01:24. | :01:29.
does, much to the frustration of commuters who have little choice but | :01:30. | :01:33.
to pay more. With just two days until Christmas, the news that real | :01:34. | :01:38.
fears will increase in the New Year has come as unwelcome present. Many | :01:39. | :01:42.
commuters travelling from here to London on a regular basis, this | :01:43. | :01:48.
season ticket cost them thousands of pounds per year. Certainly, my | :01:49. | :01:54.
salary will not go up by 3%, so I will lose out in real terms over the | :01:55. | :01:58.
year. There comes a tipping point, doesn't there, when it becomes | :01:59. | :02:04.
cheaper to move to London and other banking it. I don't really think I | :02:05. | :02:10.
could complain too much about that. On the other hand, this is rep of | :02:11. | :02:17.
Britain. For 11 years running, commuters have dealt with the above | :02:18. | :02:25.
inflation rise. Just weeks ago, the government stepped in, rushing | :02:26. | :02:29.
through regulations to limit the train company's power to increase | :02:30. | :02:35.
fears. It has caused First Great Western abandon its plan to change | :02:36. | :02:43.
its fear structure. Changing the formula is something that will | :02:44. | :02:46.
likely encourage more people onto the railway and make the cost of | :02:47. | :02:53.
travelling by rail cheaper. That is a good thing. Next year's price rise | :02:54. | :02:59.
may be less than anticipated, but real users still say it will | :03:00. | :03:03.
disadvantage low to medium earners whose income does not rise in line | :03:04. | :03:14.
with inflation. An inquest into the death of Jayden | :03:15. | :03:17.
Parkinson has been opened ` and adjourned. It's still not clear how | :03:18. | :03:20.
the 17`year`old from Didcot died. Her body was discovered hidden | :03:21. | :03:23.
inside a grave at All Saints churchyard in the town last | :03:24. | :03:26.
Wednesday. An initial postmortem examination failed to establish the | :03:27. | :03:29.
cause of death. Detectives say further tests could take several | :03:30. | :03:31.
weeks to complete. Jayden's former boyfriend, 22`year`old Ben Blakeley | :03:32. | :03:34.
from Reading, has been charged with her murder. A 17`year`old boy from | :03:35. | :03:37.
Didcot has been charged with perverting the course of justice. | :03:38. | :03:40.
People out partying in Swindon over the Christmas period are being | :03:41. | :03:43.
warned to steer clear of drugs often called "legal highs," which police | :03:44. | :03:46.
believe are becoming more easily available. They're particularly | :03:47. | :03:48.
worried about three new substances which are said to be circulating in | :03:49. | :03:52.
the area. Back in July, 23`year`old Christopher Scott died after taking | :03:53. | :03:58.
AMT tablets in the town. Our reporter Jessica Cooper is here with | :03:59. | :04:01.
more details. What does this latest warning from the police say? They | :04:02. | :04:09.
say it is difficult to know what chemicals are in some of these | :04:10. | :04:15.
drugs, and they haven't been tested, whether they are illegal is also | :04:16. | :04:19.
question. The warning about three substances that they now are in use | :04:20. | :04:27.
in Swindon. They are MDVP, which is a class B stimulant drug, PVP, which | :04:28. | :04:33.
police say is being sold in crystal form, and another countries it is | :04:34. | :04:37.
actually a controlled drug after being linked to deaths. And also | :04:38. | :04:44.
Etizolam, which they say if mixed with other drugs or alcohol, could | :04:45. | :04:51.
increase the risk of overdose. MP Robert Buckland is working to ban a | :04:52. | :04:56.
particular legal high, isn't he? Yes, he is looking to ban EMT, which | :04:57. | :05:04.
is the drug that killed Christopher Scott. The government is reviewing | :05:05. | :05:10.
how it classifies legal highs and looking at making it easier to have | :05:11. | :05:15.
temporary bans. But the police in Swindon are advising, in the rush up | :05:16. | :05:22.
`` run`up to Christmas especially, to avoid legal highs and advise them | :05:23. | :05:25.
if they know where they are being sold. | :05:26. | :05:32.
Thames Valley Police have arrested 134 people on suspicion of | :05:33. | :05:34.
drink`driving in Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire since the start of | :05:35. | :05:37.
December. Police are targeting drivers on the way home from nights | :05:38. | :05:41.
out or the morning after as part of their 'Is It Worth The Risk?' | :05:42. | :05:44.
campaign. 114 people in the Thames Valley have been charged. | :05:45. | :05:47.
Making their Christmas wish come true would inevitably mean | :05:48. | :05:49.
heartbreak for another family. With growing numbers of people on the | :05:50. | :05:52.
register awaiting organ transplants, there's a fresh appeal for potential | :05:53. | :05:55.
donors to come forward ` people prepared to declare their | :05:56. | :05:58.
willingness to help others in the event of their own death. Angie | :05:59. | :06:01.
Walker's spent the day with a Buckinghamshire family whose | :06:02. | :06:04.
seriously ill son has come home for the holidays. | :06:05. | :06:07.
3`year`old Rocco Seagrove has spent much of his short life in hospital. | :06:08. | :06:12.
He desperately needs a new liver, pancreas and bowel. That means he | :06:13. | :06:20.
can't eat or go the toilet normally. His immune system is so low he can't | :06:21. | :06:24.
leave the house, and spends his life hooked up to machines. It's very, | :06:25. | :06:31.
very serious. If he gets any infections or bugs, he can die. | :06:32. | :06:37.
Unfortunately, he does suffer a lot of infections. So, really, the | :06:38. | :06:42.
sooner we get the donor, and the call... Fingers crossed... Without a | :06:43. | :06:49.
donor, unfortunately, he won't survive. The number of people | :06:50. | :06:57.
needing an organ transplant is going up all the time, but not enough | :06:58. | :07:01.
potential donors are making their wishes known, which means every | :07:02. | :07:05.
year, hundreds of life`saving organs are going to waste. We will always | :07:06. | :07:19.
check the organ donor register first, but because someone isn't | :07:20. | :07:22.
registered doesn't mean they didn't want to become a donor. So we go and | :07:23. | :07:26.
speak to those families and ask those families to make a decision | :07:27. | :07:29.
about organ donation, but we know only 31% of those families agree to | :07:30. | :07:33.
it going ahead. There are currently 598 people in our region waiting for | :07:34. | :07:36.
a transplant. 135 people's lives were saved in the past year, thanks | :07:37. | :07:42.
to a donor. But 16 people here died in the past year because of the | :07:43. | :07:49.
shortage of organs. It would just be a huge, life`saving relief for him. | :07:50. | :07:54.
He would eventually be able to eat and drink ` that's the aim. And have | :07:55. | :07:59.
a life ` he'd be able to go to nursery and to become a normal | :08:00. | :08:02.
little boy, which he's not at the moment, and which he deserves. | :08:03. | :08:10.
A man dressed in a Santa costume has carried out an armed robbery at a | :08:11. | :08:14.
branch of Next in Oxford. He threatened staff with a knife at the | :08:15. | :08:18.
store on the Oxford Retail Park in Cowley just after 9.30 this morning. | :08:19. | :08:21.
The branch was closed briefly, and police say one member of staff was | :08:22. | :08:24.
left badly shaken. The man who carried out the robbery is thought | :08:25. | :08:28.
to be his 30s. He escaped on a bike towards the Blackbird Leys Bridge. | :08:29. | :08:31.
It's crucial, life`changing work, but getting a wheelchair tweaked and | :08:32. | :08:34.
adjusted to the individual needs of its user can take time. In | :08:35. | :08:38.
Oxfordshire, there was a wait of up to 11 months. But the backlog's been | :08:39. | :08:41.
cut ` and it's making a huge difference to the lives of people | :08:42. | :08:44.
like Richard Payne, from Appleford near Didcot. As Helen Catt reports, | :08:45. | :08:48.
Richard's among the many to benefit from a turnaround time that's now | :08:49. | :08:51.
just five weeks. Richard Payne spends every waking | :08:52. | :08:56.
hour in his wheelchair. He has multiple sclerosis and the chair has | :08:57. | :08:58.
been customised to fit his individual needs. Deceit physics | :08:59. | :09:09.
ended `` this seat is extended, because I have long legs and need | :09:10. | :09:18.
support. I'm able to get closer to the table, which makes eating much | :09:19. | :09:23.
easier. When Richard got his first electric wheelchair five years ago | :09:24. | :09:27.
is, some patients were having to wait as long as 11 months, and | :09:28. | :09:30.
having the wrong chair can be difficult. If it is not designed for | :09:31. | :09:37.
your posture, your posture will deteriorate and you will be | :09:38. | :09:40.
uncomfortable, and get pressure sores, so it is essential that the | :09:41. | :09:47.
design of wheelchair specifically for your needs. | :09:48. | :09:51.
Oxford University hospitals trust was giving funding `` was given | :09:52. | :09:58.
funding to keep bring the waiting time down to five weeks. Staff have | :09:59. | :10:02.
agreed to work overtime to speed up procedures. If you have the capacity | :10:03. | :10:08.
right, then when you reduce the waiting list, you can maintain it. | :10:09. | :10:13.
That's what we've been able to do. We have got rid of the old, as it | :10:14. | :10:18.
were, of all the people who were awaiting longer than five weeks `` | :10:19. | :10:24.
got rid of the backlog. But at the same time, we are seeing some | :10:25. | :10:28.
changes as well, hopefully to improve things even further. Richard | :10:29. | :10:33.
benefited from the faster system when he had his chair of the place | :10:34. | :10:36.
this month. The hospital says it is confident it | :10:37. | :10:39.
can keep the waiting time down for patients like him. | :10:40. | :10:42.
That's all from me for the moment. The highlights of the weekend's | :10:43. | :10:45.
football from Oxford United, Swindon Town and the MK Dons is coming up. | :10:46. | :10:49.
I'll be back at 10.25pm. Now, here's Sally Taylor. | :10:50. | :11:03.
shoppers had tried to take advantage, the wind and rain had | :11:04. | :11:07.
kept most people away. Still to come on South Today: | :11:08. | :11:16.
Overtakes you didn't get to see this year. | :11:17. | :11:23.
Tony is here now. Moving on to sport. What is this about the | :11:24. | :11:30.
Royals? It has been going on for a few | :11:31. | :11:33.
weeks, one of those stories that goes under the radar. I thought it | :11:34. | :11:38.
worth looking at in more detail. There are a few question marks over | :11:39. | :11:45.
Redding. Reading chairman Sir John Madejski | :11:46. | :11:48.
acknowledged that the club is looking for new investment in an | :11:49. | :11:51.
interview with the BBC this weekend. It comes as Royals fans question the | :11:52. | :11:54.
whereabouts of their absent owner and talks continue behind the scenes | :11:55. | :11:58.
which could lead to a takeover. The long servants of Redding football | :11:59. | :12:00.
club were in the directors box on Saturday. Chairman Sir John Madejski | :12:01. | :12:01.
at the chairman... Chief Executive. BBC South has learned that the | :12:02. | :12:15.
Royals are talking to potential investors. Formal talks have been | :12:16. | :12:21.
going on for some weeks now. The current owner owns 51%, he should | :12:22. | :12:26.
have bought the remaining 49% from St John Madejski Stadium, but the | :12:27. | :12:31.
deal was not finalised. Now he may be ready to sell up. | :12:32. | :12:34.
We're looking for potential investors, and that never stops. | :12:35. | :12:44.
Are you making headway among? I think so, I think we are raking very | :12:45. | :12:47.
good progress indeed. On the field, they lost their second | :12:48. | :12:50.
consecutive home game, caught napping by Wigan who were to nil up | :12:51. | :12:57.
after only 12 minutes. They missed a penalty in the second | :12:58. | :13:03.
half, but then another Russian of the club headed one back. Delay to | :13:04. | :13:08.
hit the post, but Wigan held on. Is it fair to say you are a little in | :13:09. | :13:12.
the dark as to what the long`term plan can be? | :13:13. | :13:16.
A long`term plan is to get Redding football club into the Premier | :13:17. | :13:23.
League. It takes is a little bit of time to get it right. We'll get | :13:24. | :13:26.
there because we know what we want to achieve. | :13:27. | :13:30.
The games come thick and fast over Christmas. The names in the | :13:31. | :13:35.
directors box to be changing, too. Want to watch over 2014, and there's | :13:36. | :13:40.
more analysis on that on the BBC website. | :13:41. | :13:45.
After a blistering start to the Premier League season, Southampton | :13:46. | :13:48.
are now without a win in six games they led at home yesterday against | :13:49. | :13:51.
Spurs through Adam Lallana. Emmanuel Adebayor volleyed in the first of | :13:52. | :13:56.
his two goals on the day to level. Jos Hoiveld put through his own net, | :13:57. | :13:59.
but Saints bounced straight back, Lallana set up Lambert for 2`2. But | :14:00. | :14:06.
Adebayor got the winner. Southampton are ninth. | :14:07. | :14:11.
And so to something of an MK Dons revival to | :14:12. | :14:23.
report. Stephen Gleeson and a breathtaking opening goal. The | :14:24. | :14:32.
second goal came from Ben Rees. Having Patrick Bamford on loan from | :14:33. | :14:35.
Chelsea has been brilliant for the MK Dons, and he scored his 15th goal | :14:36. | :14:41.
of the season to make it 3`0. He could be heading back to London, so | :14:42. | :14:46.
enjoy him while he is here. At Swindon, it started well, with a | :14:47. | :14:59.
goal in the first half. Swindon hit back, and then a cool finish from | :15:00. | :15:04.
Michael story gave Town some festive cheer. Something has clicked with | :15:05. | :15:11.
Oxford United, the manager says some of his players | :15:12. | :15:14.
had ten days to save their careers. He criticised the culture of morning | :15:15. | :15:17.
and said he has to stop it quickly. Basingstoke Bison got the better of | :15:18. | :15:21.
Bracknell Bees in a Premier League ice hockey encounter decided by only | :15:22. | :15:24.
one goal on Saturday night. Joe Miller scored what turned out to be | :15:25. | :15:27.
the winner as Basingstoke secured second spot going into the festive | :15:28. | :15:31.
period. They won the second game of the double`header 5`0 on Sunday. | :15:32. | :15:34.
Just a point behind the Bison are the Guildford Flames. We look | :15:35. | :15:39.
forward to a busy period of sport over Christmas. Lots of goals, match | :15:40. | :15:45.
of the day, the football league show, and I'll be here on the 27th | :15:46. | :15:51.
with the full football round`up. The weather is full outside, and it | :15:52. | :15:56.
still making the headlines today. And if you look back over the year, | :15:57. | :15:59.
it has dominated the headlines this year on many occasions. | :16:00. | :16:04.
Snow in January and all sorts, didn't we? . Alexis Green has been | :16:05. | :16:11.
looking back at some of the weather extremes. | :16:12. | :16:16.
It really windy here on the Isle of Wight, but nowhere near as windy as | :16:17. | :16:23.
it was back in October. That brought winds of 99 mph. Across the | :16:24. | :16:28.
Atlantic, to weather systems merged and began to pick up speed as they | :16:29. | :16:32.
were swept along by the jet stream. On the 27th of October the storm hit | :16:33. | :16:38.
southern England, and it wasn't trees that bore the brunt. In | :16:39. | :16:42.
Christchurch a family was walking with a shock. Four o'clock in the | :16:43. | :16:47.
morning, my daughter started screaming saying a tree had come | :16:48. | :16:48.
down on the road. I looked out the window and there it | :16:49. | :16:55.
was. It has crushed three cars. When he starts to violently rotate a | :16:56. | :17:00.
tornado can form, and evidence suggests that is what happened | :17:01. | :17:02.
earlier this year on healing island. | :17:03. | :17:08.
I just heard and felt this howling wind and it felt like the roof was | :17:09. | :17:10.
going to come through the house. Then it was just gone in a blast. | :17:11. | :17:16.
On a smaller scale, rotation at their country this phenomenon, | :17:17. | :17:22.
commonly known as a duster. Mac they commonly car on sunny days, and this | :17:23. | :17:26.
one was filmed in Basingstoke in September. | :17:27. | :17:29.
I had my camera with me and I was about 40 feet away from it. I was | :17:30. | :17:33.
beginning to get covered by the falling debris, but it just tracked | :17:34. | :17:39.
diagonally and went through this gap with was a couple of hedges and that | :17:40. | :17:43.
was it, it was gone. Remember the long hot summer? | :17:44. | :17:47.
High`pressure settled over the UK in July, sending temperatures over 28 | :17:48. | :17:54.
Celsius for 19 consecutive days... It was nice to come out and get a | :17:55. | :17:59.
nice breeze. It's too hot for me, I can't do anything. | :18:00. | :18:03.
I need a siesta in the afternoon. And build services reported | :18:04. | :18:05.
increased call outs, but to resign was booming. | :18:06. | :18:11.
This year was all about the staycation. Do not wish you were in | :18:12. | :18:16.
Spain? Now. | :18:17. | :18:25.
Animals needed help to stay. Mac luckily she's not pink, lots of pink | :18:26. | :18:31.
pigs can get some/ . But before the warm summer, easterly | :18:32. | :18:34.
winds brought one of our coldest spring is on record. At the | :18:35. | :18:38.
beginning of the year, snow brought much of the South to the halt, or at | :18:39. | :18:45.
least two more leisurely pursuits. Extreme weather always produces some | :18:46. | :18:49.
great photos. Take a look at this lightning photographed by South | :18:50. | :18:51.
today viewers back in October. You look back on the weather and | :18:52. | :19:10.
think, I remember that, but looking back at that, I don't remember much | :19:11. | :19:16.
of it. I remember at the cricket at the role, cricketers were wearing | :19:17. | :19:20.
hats and gloves. As you know, every day we bring you | :19:21. | :19:24.
a high quality service. But sometimes it doesn't always go | :19:25. | :19:26.
according to plan. Here are our South Today bloopers | :19:27. | :19:32.
for this year. Enjoy! And join me later as we look at | :19:33. | :19:35.
boulders from Mars and rockets and vacuum cleaners. I'm going to bring | :19:36. | :19:43.
you an idiot's gate to space. Did I say vacuum cleaners? | :19:44. | :19:49.
Journey later in the programme when I'll get... Straight in the eye. | :19:50. | :19:58.
That's what we do, we make the budget up as we go along. No, no, | :19:59. | :20:04.
no, no. Will more people be getting the | :20:05. | :20:30.
centres? To To HE LAUGHS I'm so sorry. | :20:31. | :20:41.
What's it like, Chris? Or even Steve, his brother. | :20:42. | :20:47.
There's none need to get too close. That's fine. I'm going to back away | :20:48. | :20:52.
a little bit. I had a little funny turn there, it got all exciting. | :20:53. | :21:14.
Like this? SHE LAUGHS bloodlust. That made any environment much | :21:15. | :21:23.
easier to working. Is a big need for a local shop and | :21:24. | :21:27.
as part of Hampshire was mac I think so. | :21:28. | :21:31.
I think there is a big need for a local shop with local food a day | :21:32. | :21:38.
reasonable price. Rian Shropshire here? | :21:39. | :21:46.
We're in Berkshire, actually. And those are the ones we can show | :21:47. | :21:51.
you. I want to show you this. It's Christmas shopping that turned into | :21:52. | :21:54.
a wedding proposal for a one`woman on Saturday. If flash mob broke out | :21:55. | :22:06.
into a dance. The groom to be got up and joined in as he went into the | :22:07. | :22:11.
store with his girlfriend, Laura. Your tower there on the pretext of | :22:12. | :22:15.
doing some festive shopping. Guess what? At the end of the song, he | :22:16. | :22:20.
does this dash he gets down on one knee and pops the question. And it | :22:21. | :22:29.
was... It has got to be. Yes. Congratulations, Laura and Daniel. | :22:30. | :22:38.
Now the weather: yes, we saw costs of 90 mph. | :22:39. | :22:46.
We're going to experience very strong winds through the course of | :22:47. | :22:50.

rain. You can see the gusts coming in. Areas east of the Isle of Wight, | :22:55. | :23:00.
gusts wraps up to 85 miles per, and inland gusts of up to 60 mph. The | :23:01. | :23:05.
rain eventually clears, and the winds gradually ease by Don | :23:06. | :23:10.
tomorrow. Still very windy conditions. Winds increasing around | :23:11. | :23:17.

gusts on the south coast of up to 90 mph, inland up to 60 mph. Tomorrow | :23:21. | :23:27.
we can expect those of around four or five Celsius. Temperatures will | :23:28. | :23:32.
be above freezing Tom and we are expected some sunny spells but also | :23:33. | :23:36.
some heavy showers. If you catch a shower that could be a lot of fun or | :23:37. | :23:41.
he'll next in. Those will continue, most likely for the South East. | :23:42. | :23:48.
Temperatures will reach six up to nine Celsius. The winds brisk but | :23:49. | :23:54.
not as strong as today are tonight. Through the early hours of Christmas | :23:55. | :23:57.
day there will be a few showers, maybe the odd winter remix. There | :23:58. | :24:04.
could be sweet or hill, even the odd snow shower, but it should not | :24:05. | :24:09.
settle. Temperatures fall to one or two Celsius. A few showers on | :24:10. | :24:14.
Christmas Day, that will set the theme for the rest of the week. | :24:15. | :24:18.
There will be deals and heavy rain tonight. Stay tuned to your local | :24:19. | :24:22.
BBC radio station for the latest in the travel situation. And not just | :24:23. | :24:27.

we have another deep area of low pressure pushing in from the | :24:32. | :24:37.

station. It's a tradition on South Today that | :24:51. | :24:53.
we end the last full programme before Christmas with a carol. | :24:54. | :24:56.
This year, our choice is Silent Night performed by the Military | :24:57. | :24:58.
Wives Choir from Aldershot. Christmas is a time for families, | :24:59. | :25:02.
but many of the singers in the group have partners away on duty in | :25:03. | :25:06.
Afghanistan. So for them ` and you ` we wish you a safe and very happy | :25:07. | :25:10.
