colder. It could be short lived. That is all from the BBC's

:00:00.:00:00.

Hello and welcome to South Today from Oxford.

:00:00.:00:12.

In tonight's programme: Oxford United's Wilder days are over.

:00:13.:00:15.

One of the longest serving manager's in football has left with the club,

:00:16.:00:19.

we assess the impact he has made in his five`year reign and ask what

:00:20.:00:22.

next for United. It was a big decision. I Iain Percy

:00:23.:00:26.

enjoyed myself, the support was first class.

:00:27.:00:29.

Also, it's charged with smoothing out the economy so why is private

:00:30.:00:38.

sector employment is falling? And faster than anywhere else in the UK

:00:39.:00:42.

in one city in our region? Further frustration for businesses

:00:43.:00:45.

and travellers. As work on a bridge over the Thames is delayed.

:00:46.:00:48.

And later, on the buses, we're with the artist who has a ticket to ride

:00:49.:01:02.

for the sake of art. He was one of the longest serving

:01:03.:01:06.

managers in football but after five years at the helm with Oxford United

:01:07.:01:10.

Chris Wilder has gone. His rink included in messy circumstances with

:01:11.:01:15.

a claim and counterclaim for a settlement was reached. While he had

:01:16.:01:20.

already taken over at Northampton Town, United have been left

:01:21.:01:24.

searching for a replacement. The end of an era. By the time

:01:25.:01:28.

Saturday 's victory over Torquay was over Chris Wilder knew his time at

:01:29.:01:34.

Oxford United was as well. Within 48 hours he would be unveiled as the

:01:35.:01:37.

manager of the football the's bottom club, the security of the three and

:01:38.:01:42.

a half year contract going on the way to explain why he would leave

:01:43.:01:47.

United for a job at Northampton Town.

:01:48.:01:51.

I have got my own reasons, personal and professional. Maybe it is the

:01:52.:01:54.

right time. I have been there for five years. Maybe the car was

:01:55.:01:58.

driving itself is on its own, maybe I needed that new challenge. Oxford

:01:59.:02:04.

were pretty tough in their negotiation but we got there.

:02:05.:02:10.

Delighted it is finally done. Chris has done a fantastic job for

:02:11.:02:14.

the football club, no doubt. I see him now as a close friend. I wish

:02:15.:02:21.

him well. The ups and downs of the last 48

:02:22.:02:25.

hours or fitting giving his emotional time in charge of Oxford,

:02:26.:02:30.

beyond doubt the highlight Wembley win in 2010 that restored football

:02:31.:02:40.

league status. Long celebrated victories over local

:02:41.:02:44.

rivals Swindon also brought joy but in other ways progress was too slow

:02:45.:02:47.

for some fans, and his relationship with the owner group VAT is. Now

:02:48.:02:54.

Lenaghan faces his biggest football decision, appointing his successor.

:02:55.:03:00.

Joining me is the chairman of Oxford United's supporters group, was his

:03:01.:03:05.

leaving inevitable? I think it probably was, he wanted more

:03:06.:03:08.

stability, Oxford United wanted to see how the season was going before

:03:09.:03:12.

activating next year in his contract.

:03:13.:03:16.

We saw some memorable moments with him at the helm, how significant is

:03:17.:03:20.

his departure? It is a massive decision. I know a

:03:21.:03:25.

lot of firms working to see him go, a lot looking to see him stay. The

:03:26.:03:29.

key thing now is getting the next replacement right, not forgetting

:03:30.:03:32.

the great memories we had. He goes to the bottom club, Oxford

:03:33.:03:37.

United find themselves in the play`off places. Do you think Oxford

:03:38.:03:42.

United will be rocked by his departure?

:03:43.:03:47.

That depends on how quickly and who comes in. You got to look to the

:03:48.:03:50.

owner to get the decision right, it is a key decision. A great chance of

:03:51.:03:55.

promotion. The players we have got our good professionals. All we need

:03:56.:04:00.

is to get a guy that isn't a polarising character, can push is

:04:01.:04:02.

on. The betting for MK Dons manager,

:04:03.:04:08.

Martin Allen, the former Swindon manager, Paolo Di Canio. As a

:04:09.:04:12.

consensus about who should be the replacement? `` is there a

:04:13.:04:18.

consensus. I think you can write Di Canio off for a start. . Every fan

:04:19.:04:27.

has an opinion but the opinion that matters is the board. All eyes are

:04:28.:04:31.

upon making the decision and hopefully we can push on.

:04:32.:04:38.

We have heard much about how the economic recovery will be driven by

:04:39.:04:42.

the private sector creating new jobs which is why use of a dramatic fall

:04:43.:04:46.

in the number of those jobs in Oxford may come as a concern. It has

:04:47.:04:52.

seen the fastest drop of any major UK city down by 2000 between 2011

:04:53.:04:59.

and 2012, at the same time Swindon 11 is seeing that much`needed

:05:00.:05:01.

private sector investment. Why the difference?

:05:02.:05:05.

The construction industry has been hit hard by the recession but you

:05:06.:05:10.

would not know it here. In the last five years this Swindon firm has

:05:11.:05:16.

taken on an extra 50 staff. Even during the recession that has been a

:05:17.:05:18.

significant amount of building work going on. Over the last four or five

:05:19.:05:24.

years we have increased in size by about 50%. Last year our turnover

:05:25.:05:29.

was 77 million. According to a report out today for every five jobs

:05:30.:05:33.

in Swindon in 2012 four of them were in the private sector. But the same

:05:34.:05:38.

cannot be said for its neighbour Oxford. Here there has been a 4%

:05:39.:05:43.

fall in the number of private sector jobs. That is more than 2000 posts

:05:44.:05:48.

lost, and that is the worst for any UK city or major town. Would you put

:05:49.:05:53.

your head office in Oxford where you know your staff will take good,

:05:54.:06:00.

extra half hour to get into work? Where your customers cannot get in

:06:01.:06:05.

to see you, you will tend to locate somewhere with good transport links.

:06:06.:06:09.

When complete the Regent Circus Development in Swindon will be held

:06:10.:06:13.

to a cinema, restaurants and supermarkets creating in the

:06:14.:06:15.

process, it is claimed, to 1000 new jobs. Why is Swindon succeeding

:06:16.:06:24.

where Oxford isn't? The connectivity to London and other places, but also

:06:25.:06:30.

the availability of the skilled and adaptable workforce. The two main

:06:31.:06:33.

things we hear from the businesses we talk to as to why they are here.

:06:34.:06:38.

This report is by no means all bad news for Oxford, it showed its

:06:39.:06:42.

people are the second most highly qualified in the UK, and levels of

:06:43.:06:46.

inequality in the city are relatively low. But if business is

:06:47.:06:49.

going to boom, there is still plenty of work to be done.

:06:50.:06:58.

Next to night, nearly 25,000 people have signed an online petition

:06:59.:07:01.

demanding the resignation of the Henley councillor who claimed God

:07:02.:07:05.

sent the recent floods because of the government's stance on gay

:07:06.:07:09.

marriage. David Silvester has said he will not stand down from the town

:07:10.:07:14.

council even though he has been suspended by his party. Sarah

:07:15.:07:18.

Butcher, who started the petition, says in her view he isn't fit to

:07:19.:07:23.

represent the people of Henley. We are appealing to him to stand

:07:24.:07:27.

down, we have got nearly 25,000 votes, that should give him a good

:07:28.:07:34.

idea his views are not part of how we feel today. His views makes

:07:35.:07:38.

people feel uncomfortable. We don't want somebody like that are

:07:39.:07:43.

presenting us in Henley. The Templars Square shopping Centre

:07:44.:07:46.

in Cowley in two and had to be closed for a short time after part

:07:47.:07:49.

of its glass ceiling collapsed during heavy rain and strong wind.

:07:50.:07:53.

Nobody was injured in Saturday afternoon's incident and the centre

:07:54.:07:57.

was reopened a few minutes later. Temporary repairs have been carried

:07:58.:08:03.

out on the shops open as normal. 93 man has died following a house

:08:04.:08:06.

fire in Abingdon. Part of Preston Road had to be closed while five

:08:07.:08:12.

entered into the house at 6pm last night. The elderly occupant's death

:08:13.:08:17.

is currently being treated as not explained but it is not suspicious.

:08:18.:08:22.

Work to renovate the Whitchurch toll bridge over the River Thames will

:08:23.:08:26.

now take three months longer to complete than first thought. Drivers

:08:27.:08:28.

have been forced to make if retreating detour since it was

:08:29.:08:35.

closed `` frustrating detour. The work has been disrupted by bad

:08:36.:08:39.

weather and high and fast flowing river doubles.

:08:40.:08:46.

`` levels. Work ground to a halt before

:08:47.:08:50.

Christmas. The project is three months behind schedule. It is the

:08:51.:08:55.

three disappointing, because it is a ten mile trip by car extra if we

:08:56.:09:00.

want to go to Pangbourne. Going through Caversham is a nightmare.

:09:01.:09:05.

Going three touring is not too bad, but we are spending a lot more money

:09:06.:09:12.

on fuel. `` going through Goring. It will have an impact, local

:09:13.:09:14.

businesses are suffering. Another three months will not be what they

:09:15.:09:20.

want to hear. My customers have been really annoyed, it is hit trade

:09:21.:09:24.

quite hard, especially the food outlets. Frustrated, disappointed,

:09:25.:09:30.

but the weather being what it is, record flood levels, the flow is

:09:31.:09:34.

still very high, the contractor cannot go on the river while the

:09:35.:09:40.

River is red bordered by the Environment Agency. The project was

:09:41.:09:48.

aimed to be done in the summer months but the investment agency

:09:49.:09:50.

said no because it would have been too disruptive operators. The

:09:51.:09:55.

contractors say they are confident they are going to get the vertical

:09:56.:09:59.

columns installed in the riverbed by the end of March so this section of

:10:00.:10:05.

the river can be open to voters as planned before Easter. Drivers will

:10:06.:10:10.

have to wait until July. Friends and relatives of the

:10:11.:10:15.

murdered Didcot teenager Jayden Parkinson gathered at the weekend to

:10:16.:10:18.

remember her and give thanks for her life. A special service took place

:10:19.:10:21.

at the church where her body was found last month, hidden in the

:10:22.:10:25.

graveyard. It still isn't clear how she died, or when a funeral service

:10:26.:10:29.

could be held. There is talk of creating a lasting memorial for her

:10:30.:10:31.

in her hometown. They came to remember her, a special

:10:32.:10:46.

service to help the community here say goodbye to Jayden Parkinson. Her

:10:47.:10:51.

family were very aware people in Didcot would have a chance to

:10:52.:10:55.

remember Jayden and give thanks for her life. So they wanted to give

:10:56.:11:01.

them a opportunity to come together to celebrate her and put aside the

:11:02.:11:06.

terrible circumstances surrounding her death. It was the same

:11:07.:11:11.

churchyard where she was found in a disturbed grave. After she went

:11:12.:11:15.

missing more than 100 police officers were involved in the search

:11:16.:11:20.

to find her. Forensic experts combed sites in Didcot and the nearby

:11:21.:11:24.

village of opting until eventually she was found here at All Saints

:11:25.:11:29.

Church. Now those here want the images of the crime scene to be

:11:30.:11:32.

forgotten, and for the church to bring peace again.

:11:33.:11:38.

There is a kind of reclaiming of a space. What is wonderful about these

:11:39.:11:44.

old churches is they have known everything in their history, and

:11:45.:11:46.

they are still here, and they still places of prayer, supremely of hope.

:11:47.:11:54.

Her family have asked the media not to film inside during the service

:11:55.:11:56.

but of the next hour they will listen to some of her favourite

:11:57.:12:00.

songs. School friends are here to pay tribute and at the end her

:12:01.:12:09.

mother is go to thank the community to pay `` for their support. Herrick

:12:10.:12:13.

's boyfriend has been charged with her murder. A 17`year`old boy from

:12:14.:12:21.

Didcot has been charged with perverting the course of justice. A

:12:22.:12:25.

post`modern hasn't explained how she died but more tests are due to take

:12:26.:12:32.

place. You have seen the Oxford United

:12:33.:12:36.

action on and off the field, the rest of the sports including news of

:12:37.:12:39.

a victory for Swindon in a few minutes.

:12:40.:12:48.

cheaper to make that settlement. And you can see the full story on

:12:49.:12:50.

tonight's Inside Out starting in about 45 minutes here on BBC One.

:12:51.:12:54.

Still to come in this evening's South Today: battered by a tornado.

:12:55.:13:07.

That is what residents believe they witnessed.

:13:08.:13:10.

The Government calls small businesses the lifeblood of the

:13:11.:13:13.

economy. At a major conference today the Prime Minister was keen to show

:13:14.:13:17.

off what he's doing to help them grow. While the political focus has

:13:18.:13:20.

been about reducing red tape ` it's a more familiar problem that still

:13:21.:13:24.

seems to be holding back firms here in the South ` access to finance.

:13:25.:13:31.

Alastair Fee reports. Five Digital has been around for about two years.

:13:32.:13:38.

Their livelihood readily growing. The battle for businesses like them

:13:39.:13:44.

is underway. We focus quite strongly on new businesses, and

:13:45.:13:49.

entrepreneurs. Over the last 12 months, that has definitely changed

:13:50.:13:54.

and has been improving. In London today, the Prime Minister took

:13:55.:13:57.

centre stage at the National conference of the Federation of

:13:58.:14:01.

Small Businesses. The message, nicking things easier by cutting red

:14:02.:14:09.

tape. `` making things easier. Legislation is unbelievably own

:14:10.:14:13.

arrest. You almost would not employ people, you would use contractors.

:14:14.:14:20.

Very difficult for businesses of below ten people to engage. 18

:14:21.:14:28.

months ago, we caught up with Colin, an ex`banker who now advises new

:14:29.:14:33.

firms. The big issue was access to finance. As I improved? Lott will

:14:34.:14:39.

not go to the banks. They will try to get it from friends, family and

:14:40.:14:44.

other people. They feel they will get rejected do things are not

:14:45.:14:48.

comfortable with doing. The last budget contained a number of

:14:49.:14:52.

measures aimed at small firms. There was a ?300 million investment scheme

:14:53.:14:56.

to boost lending small businesses. They were given ?2000 cut in

:14:57.:14:59.

employers national contributions, and by Kevin as, benefited from the

:15:00.:15:07.

cancellation of the fuel duty rise in 2013. Removing the so`called

:15:08.:15:11.

barriers to growth is exactly what our Bournemouth `based production

:15:12.:15:15.

company needs. The announcement are welcome. I don't think it goes far

:15:16.:15:22.

enough, it is on the periphery. Small companies like is really need

:15:23.:15:33.

funding and proper funding. They employ three, and plan to take on

:15:34.:15:35.

more staff if the climate continues to improve. The message still hasn't

:15:36.:15:49.

changed. Free up money. On to sport an hour. Transfer

:15:50.:15:54.

window, end of the week? Yes. I think we will have a lot of

:15:55.:16:00.

gossip. Primarily about Southampton. Keep an eye on Redding and

:16:01.:16:04.

Bournemouth as well. As it gets closer to the wire, it is more

:16:05.:16:07.

exciting. Mauricio Pochetinno says he's not

:16:08.:16:10.

expecting Luke Shaw to go anywhere in the final days of the transfer

:16:11.:16:13.

window Pochettino reiterated Saints desire to keep their star players at

:16:14.:16:16.

the club during today's press conference ahead of their Premier

:16:17.:16:19.

League clash against Arsenal tomorrow night. He also refused to

:16:20.:16:25.

be drawn on Dani Osvaldo's future with the striker currently suspended

:16:26.:16:28.

following a training ground fight last week. But has he had an offer

:16:29.:16:46.

for Shaw? I focus on the match. When it happens, if it happens, I will be

:16:47.:16:50.

informed. Meanwhile Saints beat Yeovil at St Mary's to book their

:16:51.:16:54.

place in round five of the FA Cup. A first half penalty was converted by

:16:55.:16:57.

Guly do Prado, his first goal for more than two years. Yeovil refused

:16:58.:17:04.

to lie down, and Saints had to wait until the 69th minute to seal

:17:05.:17:08.

victory thanks to a first senior goal from Sam Gallagher.

:17:09.:17:10.

Confirmation then Southampton will play at Sunderland` their third

:17:11.:17:13.

visit to the stadium of light this season on the weekend of the 15th

:17:14.:17:16.

and 16th February. They've already lost there in the league cup and

:17:17.:17:20.

drawn in the league. Brighton are at home to Hull. Brendan Rodgers paid

:17:21.:17:24.

tribute to Eddie Howe and his Bournemouth side after Liverpool's

:17:25.:17:27.

victory at Dean Court. A sell`out crowd saw the likes of Luis Suarez

:17:28.:17:34.

in action. There was a rare glimpse too of Cherries owner Max Demin the

:17:35.:17:37.

man whose investment has helped turn the club around. Liverpool scored a

:17:38.:17:43.

goal in each half, Victor Moses's effort which beating Lee Camp at the

:17:44.:17:46.

near post. Then Daniel Sturridge finishing well in the second half to

:17:47.:17:55.

end any hope of an upset. While are very good and I would give credit to

:17:56.:18:04.

them. It is not easy when you are a manager, sticking your head out, but

:18:05.:18:14.

he certainly does that. They were excellent. There was Football League

:18:15.:18:17.

action this weekend too, Kris Temple's round`up starts after this

:18:18.:18:20.

town crier at Portman Road has finished. This fan will have gone

:18:21.:18:35.

home happy. It took into the second half for Ipswich to go in front.

:18:36.:18:41.

Redding had penalty appeals on the day and saw efforts go high and

:18:42.:18:52.

wide. They are still sixth in the table. Swindon lead against

:18:53.:18:58.

Shrewsbury. The goal of the game came from the visitors. Two late

:18:59.:19:12.

goals gave Swindon all three points. Portsmouth were left to rue a

:19:13.:19:24.

goalkeeping clanger. The scores were level, but then a second was

:19:25.:19:33.

grabbed. Trevor Carson let this effort slip through his fingers.

:19:34.:19:38.

Basingstoke Bison are still in the race for ice hockey's Premier League

:19:39.:19:40.

title they beat Sheffield Steeldogs 6`5 on Saturday night. The Bison

:19:41.:19:44.

stormed into a four goal lead, Thomas Karpov and Ciaron Long among

:19:45.:19:47.

the goals. The visitors threatened a comeback and got to within one goal

:19:48.:19:51.

of the bison before, Joe Rand made it 6`3. A late fightback didn't

:19:52.:19:57.

prevent a Bison win, they're second in the table, Guildford lost to

:19:58.:20:00.

Telford and are third. Reading Rockets basketball team are

:20:01.:20:02.

celebrating after national success this weekend. The Rockets beat

:20:03.:20:06.

Newnham Neptunes by 93 points to 72 in Worcester yesterday.

:20:07.:20:18.

If you've travelled anywhere by bus, you've probably found yourself

:20:19.:20:22.

gazing blankly out of the window. As the landscape passes by, you might

:20:23.:20:25.

not concentrate on that changing view. Not so for an artist in

:20:26.:20:28.

Bournemouth, who's been commissioned to record her journeys with pencil

:20:29.:20:31.

drawings. But this is conceptual art, which not everyone may

:20:32.:20:34.

immediately warm to. James Ingham has been to meet the artist at work.

:20:35.:20:38.

Boarding a bus not for anywhere in particular, but simply to enjoy the

:20:39.:20:43.

journey. Denise Poote is recording her view of a dozen routes around

:20:44.:20:47.

Bournemouth in a rather unusual way. Armed with just a pencil and paper,

:20:48.:20:58.

she's turning the trip into art. I draw whatever catches my eye as I go

:20:59.:21:03.

past. Part of the trees become part of the buildings and vice versa. It

:21:04.:21:07.

is a physical response of my hand on the paper.

:21:08.:21:12.

For someone who gets travel sick, this seems an unusual choice of

:21:13.:21:15.

studio, but it's that unpleasant feeling that first inspired her. You

:21:16.:21:22.

are looking out of the window into the distance when I am a passenger

:21:23.:21:27.

made me observe things I thought I could begin to capture without

:21:28.:21:31.

looking at the paper. I will end up with a record of those things, and I

:21:32.:21:35.

wanted to do locally. Bournemouth's Yellow Buses

:21:36.:21:38.

commissioned this work ` so do their regular passengers like it? Very

:21:39.:21:47.

interesting. Yes. Does it make any sense to you? I am trying to figure

:21:48.:21:55.

it out. No, not really. Sorry. What do you like it? It draws attention.

:21:56.:22:00.

It makes you want to find out what it could be. At a different things

:22:01.:22:04.

to all sorts of people. That is the beauty of this. There are all sorts

:22:05.:22:08.

of different styles out there. So, just looking now, what you make of

:22:09.:22:17.

it? There is a bit of Christchurch Priory somewhere in there. There is

:22:18.:22:22.

no way you could have predicted how it would come out before. That is

:22:23.:22:26.

right. It belongs to the journey, really. I am just making marks of a

:22:27.:22:31.

particular set of circumstances. Love it or hate it, this is a view

:22:32.:22:35.

from a bus you've probably never seen before. Fascinating.

:22:36.:22:43.

More bad weather over the weekend, and on Saturday there were reports

:22:44.:22:46.

of a mini tornado over parts of Hampshire and West Sussex. Alexis

:22:47.:22:50.

will be here in a moment to give us her take on that. Roofs were ripped

:22:51.:22:54.

off garden sheds and trees felled across roads and train tracks.

:22:55.:22:57.

Although there were no reports of any serious injuries, some had a

:22:58.:23:00.

lucky escape, as Chris Robinson reports. Nestled in this tree is

:23:01.:23:07.

part of the roof of Christina's garden shed. On Saturday afternoon,

:23:08.:23:12.

she watched a strong winds ripped it apart. Homes were battered across

:23:13.:23:19.

part of the South. Her prize vintage car survived with barely a scratch

:23:20.:23:28.

on it. There is debris everywhere. Luckily, none of the horses were

:23:29.:23:34.

hurt. I am from Michu can. The midwest is quite tornado prone. I

:23:35.:23:40.

really do think this was a mini tornado. Nothing drastic like we get

:23:41.:23:44.

in the state. It looks quite familiar. This was the scene outside

:23:45.:23:50.

and over the leisure centre. A mother and her children had been

:23:51.:23:54.

sheltering under this tree when it came down on top of them. They

:23:55.:23:59.

escaped with just minor injuries. South West Trains reported some

:24:00.:24:05.

trains blocking part of a network. The driver was treated for shock

:24:06.:24:10.

when his car was trapped between branches. A massive branch was

:24:11.:24:15.

ripped off a tree here, crushing a roof. Chris Robinson.

:24:16.:24:30.

Was at a tornado? The Met Office cannot confirm because they do not

:24:31.:24:39.

have the evidence. They've is an organisation looking into it. They

:24:40.:24:46.

always send someone to have a look. A tornado gives a clearly defined

:24:47.:24:50.

damaged track. There was quite a track for that.

:24:51.:24:56.

You never know. Moody skies but a splash of colour

:24:57.:24:59.

in Mudeford in Dorset captured by Alan Smith. George Andrews took this

:25:00.:25:02.

photo of Portsmouth from East Wittering this morning. And Stephen

:25:03.:25:05.

Michelle captured a Great Egret which is in temporary residence at

:25:06.:25:12.

Blashford Lakes near Ringwood. We did see some sunshine today but

:25:13.:25:15.

tonight, the risk of further heavy rain. The Met Office have a yellow

:25:16.:25:22.

warning in place. This week, we are looking at blustery showers. It will

:25:23.:25:27.

turn slightly colder, and maybe introduce Frost and ice on untreated

:25:28.:25:33.

surfaces. Through tonight, we will see the rain showers, they will

:25:34.:25:39.

merge into longer spells of rain at times. Quite heavy in a few places.

:25:40.:25:48.

Perhaps some hair and thunder. Potentially, we could see up to an

:25:49.:26:00.

inch of rain. Lows tonight of four, five Celsius. Frost free and ice

:26:01.:26:16.

free, but the winds are blustery. Ltd brightness. If you catch

:26:17.:26:21.

sunshine, you will be very lucky. Temperatures up to around eight

:26:22.:26:28.

Celsius. Showers will continue tomorrow. They will not be as heavy.

:26:29.:26:40.

More unwelcome rain. Temperatures similar to tonight. It will be a wet

:26:41.:26:49.

start to the day we are looking at a slowly dying out scenario. There is

:26:50.:27:04.

the risk we could have some snow showers through Thursday. The Met

:27:05.:27:11.

Office do have a warning for rain for tonight and tomorrow.

:27:12.:27:14.

Thank you. That is it from us.
