Good evening. Sewage that spilled onto properties near Henley during | :00:11. | :00:16.
the flooding is still there, six weeks after it first appeared. It's | :00:17. | :00:20.
been running through gardens and driveways in Mill End, near Henley | :00:21. | :00:23.
after a pumping station flooded. Thames Water says it's fixed the | :00:24. | :00:26.
pump, but with floodwaters still high the sewage isn't draining away. | :00:27. | :00:39.
Charlotte Stacey reports. This water is basically a massive puddle full | :00:40. | :00:43.
of sewage. I'm sure it does not take much to imagine the smell here. If | :00:44. | :00:46.
The pumping station down there has failed, the electrics have been | :00:47. | :00:49.
swamped with flood water and sewage is coming onto people's gardens and | :00:50. | :00:53.
affecting people who live here. We have not been able to use the drive | :00:54. | :00:57.
for six weeks. The smell outside and the fact that the manhole cover has | :00:58. | :01:01.
been raised with the sewage is most unpleasant. The problems we have at | :01:02. | :01:06.
the moment are minute compared to what is happening down the Thames at | :01:07. | :01:11.
Wraysbury and Datchet. But we are annoyed with Thames Water because | :01:12. | :01:14.
the pumping station is not clearing properly and we have sewage leaking | :01:15. | :01:18.
out and we have to drive and alter it every day, which is pretty nasty. | :01:19. | :01:27.
This cottage is next door to the pumping station and the cellar is | :01:28. | :01:31.
full of raw sewage. It was into the house a few weeks ago but that has | :01:32. | :01:35.
now started to drain away. Alex manages this property, which is in | :01:36. | :01:38.
the process of being renovated. They have had to stop the work. Tell us | :01:39. | :01:43.
about the problems. We accept the fact that water will come into the | :01:44. | :01:56.
property, we are by the river. We have ground water coming in from the | :01:57. | :02:01.
river. I do not accept the fact that we have sewage coming in for the | :02:02. | :02:05.
second time in a year. I want Thames Water to get down here, look at the | :02:06. | :02:09.
pumping station, look at why is water getting into their pumps. They | :02:10. | :02:19.
need is the problem out. It is a simple solution, all any to do is | :02:20. | :02:22.
invest properly and get the job done. Thames Water say the problem | :02:23. | :02:25.
is fixed and the electrics are working again. The system is | :02:26. | :02:28.
overwhelmed by the amount of flood water. For people living here, they | :02:29. | :02:32.
just want a solution. Thames Water says it needs to prioritise | :02:33. | :02:35.
customers who are most in need and will start assessing the situation | :02:36. | :02:37.
when water levels subside. Meanwhile, in Oxford, some | :02:38. | :02:40.
householders are still suffering from the effects of flooded sewers. | :02:41. | :02:43.
Ann Watts has been unable to use her bathroom for almost two weeks. She's | :02:44. | :02:47.
lived in the street since she was a child and claims back then, the | :02:48. | :02:50.
waterways and sewers were better maintained. Now she says the problem | :02:51. | :02:54.
is getting worse every year. We have never had to double sandbag before, | :02:55. | :02:58.
and it is all the way round the house. We have had to buy | :02:59. | :03:05.
dehumidifiers to keep the place dry inside. We have never had to do that | :03:06. | :03:13.
before. So, things are changing. Today, MPs and local councillors met | :03:14. | :03:17.
with Downing Street advisers to press for a permanent solution to | :03:18. | :03:20.
the flooding problems in and around Oxford. MP Nicola Blackwood was | :03:21. | :03:23.
among them ` and explained why they went. Clearly, for people living in | :03:24. | :03:31.
Oxford and Abingdon, the flooding has become a really uncomfortable | :03:32. | :03:34.
reality of the winter and even though we have had a good emergency | :03:35. | :03:37.
response from the emergency services, the Environment Agency and | :03:38. | :03:41.
councils, we need to recognise it is time for long`term solutions. The | :03:42. | :03:44.
Environment Agency has come up with an impressive proposal, the Western | :03:45. | :03:46.
Conveyance Channel, which will go around Oxford. It will take the | :03:47. | :03:57.
water down to the south of Oxford. It'll cost about ?123 million. It | :03:58. | :04:02.
will take about eight years to build. This is something we are | :04:03. | :04:05.
seeking government support for but we also looking to local authorities | :04:06. | :04:09.
and businesses. Today's meeting at number ten Downing St explained the | :04:10. | :04:13.
challenges that we are facing in Oxford, not just in terms of the | :04:14. | :04:16.
human cost but the economic cost. We have roads closed, we have had rail | :04:17. | :04:23.
services down, this is not something that a 21st`century City can | :04:24. | :04:28.
sustain. An inquest has been opened and adjourned into the death of a | :04:29. | :04:32.
teenager who was stabbed to death in Oxford. Police were called to | :04:33. | :04:35.
Fairacres Road last Thursday evening where they found 17`year`old Connor | :04:36. | :04:38.
Tremble. He died in hospital at the weekend. A 20`year`old`man from | :04:39. | :04:41.
Banbury has been remanded in custody accused of his | :04:42. | :04:43.
Researchers in Oxford are trying new techniques to reduce the number of | :04:44. | :04:47.
people needing knee replacement operations. Osteo`arthritis in the | :04:48. | :04:50.
knee affects around six million people in the UK and the number's | :04:51. | :04:53.
rising as we live longer. The team at the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre | :04:54. | :04:56.
is developing customised surgery which can be done at an early stage. | :04:57. | :05:02.
Jessica Cooper reports. Doing her daily exercises after just having | :05:03. | :05:08.
her knee replaced. For Sally, the operation was a last resort after | :05:09. | :05:11.
struggling with osteoarthritis for 20 years. When you are going through | :05:12. | :05:21.
the physio, you are going through the medications, you are hoping that | :05:22. | :05:24.
you will find something that will assist you. But there comes a point | :05:25. | :05:27.
where nothing helps and you either are told this is it, carry on, all | :05:28. | :05:32.
you need a total knee replacement. There is nothing else they can | :05:33. | :05:37.
offer. Now scientists in Oxford are trying to bridge the gap by offering | :05:38. | :05:40.
tailored treatment to people with the condition at an earlier stage. | :05:41. | :05:47.
One of the treatment is being trialled here is to cut into the | :05:48. | :05:50.
shin, which realigns the leg and reduces the pressure on the knee, | :05:51. | :05:53.
which makes it less painful for people with osteoarthritis. This | :05:54. | :05:58.
image shows a knee with osteoarthritis and how the red | :05:59. | :06:01.
pressure reduces after the shin surgery. We are really hoping to | :06:02. | :06:11.
have really clear guides at the end of this three years. Where we can | :06:12. | :06:16.
see who we should be applying these treatments to, which ones we should | :06:17. | :06:19.
be applying for each person and particularly at what stage we should | :06:20. | :06:23.
be applying them for each particular person. Sally's now looking forward | :06:24. | :06:25.
to a pain`free life. She's donated her tissue and bone to the team in | :06:26. | :06:29.
Oxford to help people affected by the disease in future. That's it | :06:30. | :06:44.
from us for now. We're back in BBC Breakfast tomorrow morning. With the | :06:45. | :06:52.
weather here's Alexis Green. We have rain tonight and strengthening | :06:53. | :06:56.
southerly winds, becoming south`westerly tomorrow morning. We | :06:57. | :07:00.
are expecting outbreaks of rain and very mild temperatures overnight, | :07:01. | :07:05.
with low temperatures of eight Celsius. These showers will continue | :07:06. | :07:11.
tomorrow morning first thing, before a band of rain rattles in from the | :07:12. | :07:16.
south`west. Some strengthening winds, in particular, for the | :07:17. | :07:23.
morning rush hour. In the afternoon, sunny spells and scattered, thundery | :07:24. | :07:27.
showers, with some hailstones and high temperatures of themselves is. | :07:28. | :07:31.
We're looking at a measure of sunny spells and scattered showers. Stay | :07:32. | :07:32.
tuned, because Friday, a fine day. For the weekend, | :07:33. | :07:41.
here is the BBC National weather. We have got rain and wind in the | :07:42. | :07:48.
forecast, but the good news is that it is not severe. Over the next 24 | :07:49. | :07:53.
hours, some of us will get rain and the winds will be strengthening Not | :07:54. | :07:59.
stormy at this stage. This is the satellite picture, you can see the | :08:00. | :08:02.
low pressure in the North Atlantic shunting | :08:03. | :08:04. |
