Good evening. The Swindon Town footballer Nile Ranger has been

cleared of rape. The striker had told the jury at Newcastle Crown

Court that he was "not a rapist and he was shocked to be charged by

police and tonight that jurx found him not guilty. Our reporter Adrian

Pitches is in Newcastle for us tonight.

The allegation against Nile Ranger was made in January last ye`r. He'd

spent the night with a woman aged 23 at a hotel in Jesmond in Newcastle.

After the event, two days after the event, she made a complaint to

police and said that the sex they'd had had been non`consensual and she

had no recollection of it. She had woken up in bed with Nile R`nger the

following morning and claimdd she was so drunk she wouldn't h`ve been

able to give consent. During the course of the trial, it was revealed

that they had exchanged text messages more than 1,000 tiles over

a five`day period concerning this particular allegation. And the

defence made play of the fact that these texts were friendly,

flirtatious and, indeed, thdy seem to show some form of relationship

forming. However the woman denied that she wanted a physical

relationship with Ranger, and she was shocked by what happened. Ranger

also had mobile phones, the evidence for which was taken by police. On

one of them, he'd actually taken a picture of the bed in which the sex

act had taken place, a picttre he hastily deleted when he was

arrested. His own barrister admitted that did not actually portr`y the

actions of a gentleman. It was, if you like, a trophy photo. R`ngers

suffered as a result of these charges being brought. A move to

Hull City fell through and he moved eventually from Newcastle United to

League One Swindon Town. After the verdict was announced by thd jury

after just an hour's deliberation, Rangers said, "Thank God."

It's been confirmed teenager Jayden Parkinson died from pressurd to the

neck. She went missing in Ddcember, her body was found after a two week

search. Tonight that search has become the subject of an

investigation by the Independent Police Complaints Commission. Tom

Turrell reports. In terms of resources and m`n power,

it was one of the biggest operations Thames Valley Police has evdr

conducted. 17`year`old Jayddn Parkinson disappeared in early

December, prompting dozens of officers to begin searching for her.

Two weeks later, they found her body in a grave here at Great Western

Cemetery in Didcot. But questions are now being asked about the police

themselves. Did they follow procedure as they should have?

During the investigation, they referred themselves to the police

watchdog, the Independent Police Complaints Commission, who have

since said they're investig`ting how Thames Valley handled the c`se at

the highest level. In a statement they said...

As that investigation continues her family's grief goes on and today we

learn from officers how Jayden died. It was from pressure that w`s

applied to her neck. Her ex`boyfriend, 22`year`old Bdn

Blakely, has been charged whth her murder, whilst a 17`year`old from

Didcot has been charged with perverting the course of justice.

Both are due to appear in court later this month.

A coroner has returned an open verdict at the inquest into the

death of a 22`month`old babx from Banbury. Tayler Mason died from a

serious head injury a week `fter being admitted to hospital. His

father was jailed after admhtting neglecting his son.

A former Oxfordshire MoD base is being turned into a site for people

to build their own homes. The Graven Hill site near Bicester has been

bought by Cherwell District Council. 2,000 homes will be built there in

the largest scale self`build project in the UK. Permission is behng

sought to build a school and businesses to provide around two

thousand jobs. Construction begins next year.

There's been a big rise in the number of people being treated in

hospital for anxiety and stress in the Thames Valley. That's according

to one of the latest governlent health reports. It comes as mental

health charities in Oxfordshire say they're helping a growing ntmber of

people with these kinds of problems. Adina Campbell reports.

desperate and need help. Mental health problems can affect `ll areas

of your life. Relationships starts to break down, they can affdct your

work. Louise still enjoys cooking but says it is unlikely to dver be a

job again. More than 5,500 secondary school

children in Oxfordshire havd been offered a place at the school of

their first choice. There w`s a rise of 300 applications this ye`r but

more than 90% were given thdir first preference. Swindon also saw an

increase in applicants with a slight drop being matched with thehr first

choice. In Buckinghamshire, 78% of children got their first school up

on last year when only 54% got their preference.

A woman from Tring has recehved an OBE today from Prince Willi`m for

services to families. Catherine Court is the co`founder of
