early 1990s. That's all from the BBC News at Six. It's goodbye from me. | :00:00. | :00:00.
Hello and welcome to South Today On | :00:00. | :00:07.
Hello and welcome to South Today from Oxford. In tonight's programme: | :00:08. | :00:13.
An extra lorry every 13 seconds Concerns about congestion on the A43 | :00:14. | :00:17.
and other roads when work to build HS2 begins. | :00:18. | :00:18.
Meanwhile construction is underway to create a new rail line bdtween | :00:19. | :00:23.
Oxford and London Marylebond. Also tonight: From The Clash to | :00:24. | :00:27.
David Bowie. How Aylesbury's Friars Club is bringing its past into the | :00:28. | :00:31.
present. And later on: a major commuter route | :00:32. | :00:38.
closed during the floods reopens. Temporary repairs have been carried | :00:39. | :00:41.
out at Sonning Bridge ` but major improvements are needed. | :00:42. | :00:52.
Good evening. Construction work on the controversial high speed rail | :00:53. | :00:54.
line through Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire will bring thousands | :00:55. | :00:57.
of extra lorries to our reghon every day. Banbury, Aylesbury and | :00:58. | :01:00.
Buckingham are being out by HS2 Limited as places which will suffer | :01:01. | :01:05.
more jams over several years. Helen Catt has this report. | :01:06. | :01:10.
Before this, will come a lot more of this. | :01:11. | :01:15.
Thousands of lorries will nded to use the roads of Oxfordshird and | :01:16. | :01:18.
Buckinghamshire each day to build vital elements of the HS2 lhne, like | :01:19. | :01:29.
bridges and cuttings. According to HS2 Limited estimates | :01:30. | :01:36.
an average of one extra lorry will be going along this road evdry 3 | :01:37. | :01:39.
seconds. A few miles away is the farl which | :01:40. | :01:43.
Rachel Halverson's family h`s worked for a century. She'll lose land to | :01:44. | :01:46.
construction ` but now worrhes the extra traffic will affect hdr daily | :01:47. | :01:52.
life and her shop too. It is school brands. It is my husband getting to | :01:53. | :02:00.
this nation. People will not bother coming. It will be one more hurdle. | :02:01. | :02:05.
Major jams are also predictdd at Banbury, two junctions of the M 0, | :02:06. | :02:07.
Aylesbury and Buckingham. And around Calvert the busidst | :02:08. | :02:10.
months will see 3,000 extra lorries and the same number of cars. | :02:11. | :02:16.
For people living in rural villages between these routes, the lorries | :02:17. | :02:19.
operated by HS2 may not be the biggest problem. They can bd | :02:20. | :02:30.
constrained by agreement, btt other traffic cannot. We are concdrned | :02:31. | :02:33.
that other traffic will seek to use the roads through our village. | :02:34. | :02:39.
HS2 Limited says it will put controls on what vehicles are used | :02:40. | :02:42.
and will work with local authorities to minimise disruption. | :02:43. | :02:44.
Meanwhile Cherwell District Council intends to petition MPs on the | :02:45. | :02:49.
issue. James Abbott is from Modern Railways | :02:50. | :02:54.
Magazine. A short time ago H asked him if the disruption reallx would | :02:55. | :03:00.
be that bad. This is a major construction project so we lust | :03:01. | :03:04.
expect some disruption. It hs going to be done by large building | :03:05. | :03:07.
companies who are used to this sort of thing so hopefully it will be | :03:08. | :03:13.
kept to a minimum. When the previous high speed rail | :03:14. | :03:16.
project was being built how much impact did it have? It was carefully | :03:17. | :03:21.
organised to minimise the disruption. A large real yard was | :03:22. | :03:32.
built to receive materials. That has now been returned to farmland. The | :03:33. | :03:37.
concern here is about lorrids. There will be some lorry traffic. That is | :03:38. | :03:43.
unavoidable on a construction project of this size. There is | :03:44. | :03:49.
planning going on to minimise the disruption. The difficulty for | :03:50. | :03:54.
people affected by HS2 is that they get all of the pain without any of | :03:55. | :04:02.
the direct gain. It is a problem. In Kent they were intermediate stations | :04:03. | :04:06.
that were served by the high`speed line. There is nothing like that | :04:07. | :04:11.
plan for HS2. But he must look at it from the point of view of the entire | :04:12. | :04:15.
country. For the cities of the North it is important that their | :04:16. | :04:21.
connections to the rest of the country be improved. For thdir | :04:22. | :04:26.
country as a whole it is important. Are you saying that the disruption | :04:27. | :04:32.
is worth it? It will regenerate the north. It will help our competitive | :04:33. | :04:40.
position. France, Germany, Htaly, Spain have high`speed lines. We need | :04:41. | :04:52.
that to compete in the 21st`century. Meanwhile, the Transport Secretary | :04:53. | :04:55.
has been to see work begin on the new rail line between Oxford and | :04:56. | :04:58.
London Marylebone. The ?300 million Evergreen project will conndct | :04:59. | :05:01.
Oxford to the capital, via `n upgraded station in Bicester. It's | :05:02. | :05:04.
the first rail project of its kind, linking London to a British city, in | :05:05. | :05:12.
100 years. Victoria Cook reports. By next summer this will be a fully | :05:13. | :05:16.
functioning really lying. Trains will come through at 100 mph. `` | :05:17. | :05:33.
fully functioning railway lhne. We are seeing the start of the first | :05:34. | :05:39.
new line between London and a British city for 100 years. This | :05:40. | :05:47.
will link Oxford and London by rail. Not only this, but the ?130 million | :05:48. | :05:51.
investment will see new stations being constructed. This 1940s | :05:52. | :05:53.
eyesore in Water Eaton was demolished last year to makd way for | :05:54. | :05:58.
the new Oxford Parkway stathon. Currently most commuters who live in | :05:59. | :06:01.
Oxford and work in London, tse the First Great Western line vi` Didcot | :06:02. | :06:07.
into London Paddington. Frol 20 6 they'll have the option of taking | :06:08. | :06:09.
the Chiltern Railways train via Bicester into London Marylebone | :06:10. | :06:19.
People living north of Oxford will be able to get on board at Oxford | :06:20. | :06:22.
Parkway. Today the Secretarx of State for Transport, Patrick | :06:23. | :06:25.
McLoughlin, was on site herd to see the start of work in Bicestdr. It | :06:26. | :06:32.
shows that we are investing in a modern railway. Passenger ntmbers | :06:33. | :06:41.
have gone from 750 million to 1 5 Ilion passengers per year. That | :06:42. | :06:45.
requires a huge light of investment and we are doing that. `` 1.5 | :06:46. | :06:53.
billion. Although this is good news for | :06:54. | :06:56.
commuters, you won't be abld to get to London any faster. Travel time | :06:57. | :07:00.
from Oxford to Marylebone whll still be around 55 minutes. The ftll line | :07:01. | :07:04.
to Oxford will open in the summer of 2016. | :07:05. | :07:06.
Police are hunting two men who held up a bookmakers in Headington this | :07:07. | :07:09.
morning with what's believed to have been a gun. It happened at the Stan | :07:10. | :07:13.
James shop in Roundway at around 11.30 this morning. The men | :07:14. | :07:16.
threatened a member of staff and then left with money in a sports | :07:17. | :07:18.
bag. A Conservative peer who worked on | :07:19. | :07:21.
code`breaking intelligence `t Bletchley Park during World War Two, | :07:22. | :07:24.
has expressed concern over the future of the site. Speaking at a | :07:25. | :07:27.
debate in the House of Lords, Baroness Trumpington said she hoped | :07:28. | :07:30.
the historic visitor centre wouldn't be turned into a "Disney thdme | :07:31. | :07:33.
park." The centre is currently the subject of a dispute between the two | :07:34. | :07:37.
charities which manage the site the National Museum of Computing and the | :07:38. | :07:47.
Bletchley Park Trust. I hopd that those involved will avoid creating a | :07:48. | :07:53.
theme park experience for the visitor. Currently the Hollxwood | :07:54. | :08:04.
films that are being made their little resemblance to the Bletchley | :08:05. | :08:11.
I recall. An Oxford company has developed a | :08:12. | :08:14.
new system that lets companhes find out how safe their vehicles are just | :08:15. | :08:18.
by rolling over a special p`d. Wheel Right is based in Begbroke. They say | :08:19. | :08:21.
they've designed the world's first machine that weighs trucks `nd | :08:22. | :08:24.
checks tyre pressure and temperature. Every year hundreds of | :08:25. | :08:28.
accidents on our roads are caused by drivers not keeping an eye on the | :08:29. | :08:35.
condition of their tyres. Now it may not be as famous as the | :08:36. | :08:39.
Cavern Club in Liverpool but it helped launch the careers of some of | :08:40. | :08:42.
rock music's most iconic st`rs. The Friars Club in Aylesbury is | :08:43. | :08:45.
45`year`old ` and to commemorate, some of its famous memorabilia is | :08:46. | :08:49.
going on display for the public to enjoy. Peter Cooke went to have a | :08:50. | :08:55.
look. Rock music is not necessarily my | :08:56. | :09:00.
first choice, but for thous`nds of fans it was a firm favouritd. The | :09:01. | :09:08.
man behind this exhibition hs here. We have been trying to put on this | :09:09. | :09:13.
exhibition for 20 years. We started the club in 1969. We are sthll going | :09:14. | :09:21.
strong. We were heavily involved with people like David Bowid, | :09:22. | :09:30.
Genesis, Lou Reed. It is all here for people to see. You have some | :09:31. | :09:39.
great items on display. We have Mike Rutherford's twin necked guhtar We | :09:40. | :09:48.
got a text from the David Bowie We are very excited about that. We have | :09:49. | :10:06.
Pink Floyd's junket. `` drul kit. Tell me why this bit of cloth means | :10:07. | :10:15.
so much? It was from the David Bowie Gate in July 1972. We were right at | :10:16. | :10:22.
the front of the stage. Tow`rds the end of the gate David Bowie was | :10:23. | :10:29.
doing an encore, he took his shirt off, and threw it out. I cale away | :10:30. | :10:34.
with it and I have had it for 4 years. | :10:35. | :10:42.
This venue gave us the opportunity to see groups that we would not have | :10:43. | :10:47.
had the opportunity to see. If you want to see some of this am`zing | :10:48. | :11:01.
exhibition it is on until Jtly. Tomorrow night the Ashmolean museum | :11:02. | :11:04.
will be joining Oxford Brookes university its 150th anniversary | :11:05. | :11:07.
with an event called Wisdom, Wonders and Widgets. This robot ` c`lled | :11:08. | :11:10.
Artie ` will be one of the attractions on display. He will be | :11:11. | :11:13.
showing off his singing abilities, thespian skills ` and even guessing | :11:14. | :11:17.
people's ages. Although he tried to guess mine this week when hd visited | :11:18. | :11:20.
BBC Radio Oxford and wasn't quite on the money. You are a 32`year`old | :11:21. | :11:36.
man. Look into my eyes. You are ` | :11:37. | :11:49.
32`year`old man. Your face hs happy. At least he was right about my face. | :11:50. | :11:54.
And we'll have more with Artie in our programme tomorrow evenhng. | :11:55. | :11:57.
That's all from me for the loment. I'll have the headlines at 8pm and a | :11:58. | :12:01.
full bulletin at 10.25. Now more of today's stories with Sally Taylor. | :12:02. | :12:13.
getting better themselves. Still to come: Drama on the ice brings the | :12:14. | :12:16.
Bisons their first silverware in 14 years. A new system for dealing with | :12:17. | :12:23.
bullying and abuse cases in the Armed Forces has been descrhbed as a | :12:24. | :12:26.
whitewash by the campaign group Liberty. It helped represent the | :12:27. | :12:28.
family of Bournemouth soldidr Anne`Marie Ellement who comlitted | :12:29. | :12:31.
suicide at Bulford Barracks after bullying and the mental imp`ct of an | :12:32. | :12:36.
alleged rape. However, the Linistry of Defence says under the ndw | :12:37. | :12:39.
ombudsman system complaints will be handled fairly and effectivdly. | :12:40. | :12:48.
Heavy machinery rolled into the little Hampshire village of | :12:49. | :12:50.
Hambledon today to start reloving thousands of soggy sandbags. With | :12:51. | :12:54.
124 homes flooded in the winter storms, it was among the worst hit | :12:55. | :12:57.
communities in the south. The cost of ten long weeks of pumping, | :12:58. | :13:00.
defending homes and road closures is thought to have added up to a | :13:01. | :13:07.
whopping ?4million pounds. Chrissy Sturt reports. It is a serious | :13:08. | :13:17.
clean`up job. Dozens of workmen moved into the picture postcard | :13:18. | :13:21.
village today to start the clearance. We have deployed 70, 00 | :13:22. | :13:24.
sandbags in the past few months and sandbags in the past few months and | :13:25. | :13:29.
put simply, we want them back. We want to take them away for | :13:30. | :13:36.
recycling. This woman had mdters of pipework and six pumps moving water | :13:37. | :13:42.
from her house. There is a lassive clean`up going on now, the removal | :13:43. | :13:47.
of thousands of sandbags, trying to put their homes back togethdr, | :13:48. | :13:54.
carpets and furniture being removed. This is just one of the homds where | :13:55. | :13:58.
the dehumidifiers are still working hard. They had sewage water coming | :13:59. | :14:03.
in here and it has very badly affected the house. They had to take | :14:04. | :14:08.
up carpets in several of thd rooms. This houses thousands of ye`rs old | :14:09. | :14:13.
meaning they will have to ptt plaster on these walls, the bill is | :14:14. | :14:20.
likely to cost ?10,000. There is a ?3 million pipe required. Btt areas | :14:21. | :14:29.
do not qualify for flood defence money. After eight trip to | :14:30. | :14:37.
Westminster they are still positive. We cannot have half the pipd, it has | :14:38. | :14:41.
got to be all pipe running through the length of the village. H remain | :14:42. | :14:46.
confident that later this ydar the bulldozers will move in and start | :14:47. | :14:52.
doing the work. Despite the efforts to return to normal here and there | :14:53. | :14:56.
are still several road clostres in place and there has been water in | :14:57. | :14:59.
the streets for so long that there is no algae growing all the way down | :15:00. | :15:04.
the sides of the pavements. After months of traffic chaos and long | :15:05. | :15:06.
queues through Reading, a m`jor commuter route over the Rivdr Thames | :15:07. | :15:10.
has reopened this afternoon. It follows temporary repairs to the | :15:11. | :15:12.
flood damaged road at Sonning Bridge. The council needs to carry | :15:13. | :15:16.
out work, but has come under intense criticism from drivers and | :15:17. | :15:18.
politicians for not acting puickly enough. Nikki Mitchell reports. | :15:19. | :15:31.
Emergency repairs began this morning saw one carriageway at least could | :15:32. | :15:34.
be reopened with temporary traffic lights. It is better late than never | :15:35. | :15:39.
for this president who is isolated from her friends and family across | :15:40. | :15:45.
the river. She says complaints fell on deaf ears. I got the highways, it | :15:46. | :15:50.
is nothing to do with fuzz was the attitude I got. You can unddrstand | :15:51. | :15:55.
why we are frustrated, they just did not seem to care. Hopefully after | :15:56. | :15:59.
this weekend I shall be abld to get out easier. There has been huge | :16:00. | :16:05.
political pressure to get this busy commuter route open again. LPs have | :16:06. | :16:11.
been inundated by complaints from commuting constituents, frol | :16:12. | :16:16.
businesses and residents. They, in turn, have been urging Oxfordshire | :16:17. | :16:19.
County Council to react mord quickly. By the floodwaters have | :16:20. | :16:25.
dropped engineers have concdded a temporary fixes adequate for now. | :16:26. | :16:30.
There are hopes the governmdnt will pay for more permanent repahrs so | :16:31. | :16:34.
the route will have to be closed again soon. We need to sit down and | :16:35. | :16:40.
work out the proper plan for when the road could have permanent | :16:41. | :16:44.
repairs to load normal servhce to resume. We have to balance when the | :16:45. | :16:50.
best time for that is, do wd wait for school holidays or crack on with | :16:51. | :16:56.
that now? The long`term mord expensive plan is to raise the road | :16:57. | :17:00.
significantly saw it does not get involved with floodwater ag`in. | :17:01. | :17:12.
Residents on the Isle of Wight are fighting plans for new houshng. A | :17:13. | :17:18.
developer tried for a second time for a new application with fewer | :17:19. | :17:22.
properties on the original site which was rejected. Our reporter has | :17:23. | :17:27.
more. The Isle of Wight Council wants to build more homes in places | :17:28. | :17:32.
that already have good facilities like a post office and school. | :17:33. | :17:39.
Here, one landowner applied to build 89 houses on his land, expanding the | :17:40. | :17:45.
village by over 50%. That plan was rejected so he has applied `gain for | :17:46. | :17:50.
40 homes on the same site. He quickly launched an appeal for a | :17:51. | :17:56.
smaller number of homes on the same site. I think we should contribute | :17:57. | :18:05.
along with everyone else, if there is a identified local need the | :18:06. | :18:10.
majority of the residents hdre think five or ten houses would be ample | :18:11. | :18:14.
over the next five years, it needs to be organic and sustainable, | :18:15. | :18:18.
neither of which comes with this planning application. Like lacro the | :18:19. | :18:24.
council admit houses have to be built but location is critical. We | :18:25. | :18:30.
need appropriate development in the right places with the right | :18:31. | :18:35.
infrastructure. If the proposed developments do not meet thhs | :18:36. | :18:39.
criteria they should not go ahead. The landowner would not spe`k to us, | :18:40. | :18:43.
it is now going to the council to decide whether his visions for the | :18:44. | :18:53.
future or this field become reality. The decision to approve a 175 acre | :18:54. | :19:00.
solar farm has faced the judicial review. The solar farm in m`pper | :19:01. | :19:08.
turn was agreed by the local council in November but local residdnts will | :19:09. | :19:12.
appeal the decision at a medting in May. Now on to sport. This lan knows | :19:13. | :19:24.
how to live the high life! Ht has been a busy week, let's just say | :19:25. | :19:33.
that. We will start on the hce. 14 years without a trophy, last night | :19:34. | :19:36.
Basingstoke Bison ended thehr drought, by lifting ice hockey's | :19:37. | :19:39.
English Premier League Cup. They did it on a dramatic night at Planet Ice | :19:40. | :19:42.
in Basingstoke. Tony Husband watched the action unfold. The waithng was | :19:43. | :19:50.
finally over. Beating/bisons have some silverware. It seemed destined | :19:51. | :19:59.
to have an exciting night. The aggregate score became 5`1 `nd it | :20:00. | :20:06.
seemed like this should be ` victory parade from the start. As the night | :20:07. | :20:11.
went on that aggregate lead fell away. Their opponents had the 4`2 | :20:12. | :20:23.
lead on the night. This goal restored the 2`goal aggregate lead | :20:24. | :20:31.
which was enough. We just ndeded that last goal and we got it, the | :20:32. | :20:38.
places rocking. I would not be any rebels tonight, absolutely | :20:39. | :20:46.
brilliant. The fans deserved it tonight, we did it the right way. | :20:47. | :20:54.
More than 14,000 fans packed into planet ice. Let's hope it is not | :20:55. | :21:03.
another On to football, and Bournemouth moved into the top half | :21:04. | :21:06.

huge result at the Madejski Stadium, as they knocked mighty Liverpool out | :21:32. | :21:34.

in extra time. But in the l`st seconds, George McLennan levelled at | :21:39. | :21:43.

Reading's Taylor Crossdale held his nerve, as the Royals reached the | :21:47. | :21:49.
youth cup semi`finals for the first time in the club's history. They'll | :21:50. | :21:55.

commentary! Gosport Borough's Wembley date is now just ovdr a week | :21:59. | :22:02.
away. As part of the build`tp, managers and players from both | :22:03. | :22:04.
Borough, and opponents Cambridge, got a first glimpse of the FA | :22:05. | :22:08.
Trophy, as they took a tour down the Thames to publicise the Fin`l. Lewis | :22:09. | :22:14.
Coombes joined them. Cruising along the Thames in the London sunshine, | :22:15. | :22:18.
Gosport Borough already feel like they have one. Players have been | :22:19. | :22:25.
left pinching themselves. The prospect of policing the falous | :22:26. | :22:31.

footballers at the top level for as it is incredible to get that chance. | :22:37. | :22:44.
Being from the league above, Cambridge are undoubtedly | :22:45. | :22:48.
favourites. What an enormous task it will be to play Cambridge btt I have | :22:49. | :22:54.
labelled it the David versus Goliath game and we all know that D`vid can | :22:55. | :23:02.
Goliath. Bike macro they ard no hoping to become the lowest ranked | :23:03. | :23:10.
team to win it in 20 years. I have done a best man speech and H did all | :23:11. | :23:18.
right. The gaffer is the motivator in the team, a few of us will see | :23:19. | :23:23.
our things and we will let our football do the talking. It is the | :23:24. | :23:32.
biggest game in Gosport's hhstory. It will put us on the footb`ll match | :23:33. | :23:37.
nationally. I am very proud of the town. Sport will be hoping the | :23:38. | :23:43.
sunshine is on them again come the final. Lots more about that next | :23:44. | :23:51.
week, that is the week on Stnday. I will be at Wembley for that one | :23:52. | :23:58.
Talking of commentary, that guy from the reading youth team was | :23:59. | :24:01.
fabulous. Sometimes passion just comes out. Sometimes you have to let | :24:02. | :24:07.
the passion just go. It is fantastic. Now onto the weather It | :24:08. | :24:13.
has been glorious today, ond of the warmest days of the week? Wd peeked | :24:14. | :24:20.
at 17 today in some parts of the region. Basking. And what a | :24:21. | :24:27.
beautiful selection of photographs again today. A glorious scene from | :24:28. | :24:30.
Andy Lyons as the sun rose hn Swanage this morning. Hazy skies as | :24:31. | :24:34.
the mist cleared over Didcot. Thank you to Becca Collacott for that one. | :24:35. | :24:37.
And this photo really captures the springtime feel ` it was taken by Ed | :24:38. | :24:45.
Inman at Poole Park. Not all of buyers seeing that beautiful | :24:46. | :24:49.
sunshine today. Some of us were stuck with fog for much of the day. | :24:50. | :24:54.
That is rolling back in know and we are seeing delays already on the | :24:55. | :25:02.
services over to the island. Stay tuned to your local BBC Radho | :25:03. | :25:07.
station for travel updates. Tonight the fog will roll in across much of | :25:08. | :25:13.
the region. We are expecting some quite dense patches once ag`in. Not | :25:14. | :25:18.
everybody seeing the really thick stuff but where we do see it this | :25:19. | :25:23.
ability could be reduced to 100 metres or less. Through the morning | :25:24. | :25:27.
rush hour we do have a yellow weather warning in place once again. | :25:28. | :25:35.
That is valid until 11pm. Bx then most of ours will start to see an | :25:36. | :25:39.
improving picture. There will be brighter skies and sunny spdlls into | :25:40. | :25:46.
the afternoon. Coastal areas and the Isle of White could see somd of that | :25:47. | :25:50.
fog lingering through the d`y tomorrow but elsewhere we are hoping | :25:51. | :25:55.
much of it will lift away. Overnight tonight we will gradually CBeebies | :25:56. | :26:00.
pick`up. On Friday night th`t will happen and we will see less in the | :26:01. | :26:06.
way of fog. Generally cloudx with six or seven Celsius the ovdrnight | :26:07. | :26:12.
close. For the weekend we h`ve this area of high pressure so thhngs are | :26:13. | :26:17.
staying settled once again. We will see a little more cloud arotnd, | :26:18. | :26:22.
breezy as well but generallx some good brightness on both days and we | :26:23. | :26:27.
will see some sunny spells `t some point with more in the week of | :26:28. | :26:32.
sunshine into Sunday. Gener`lly a dry weekend with warm sunny spells | :26:33. | :26:40.
and a little breezy. Brightdning up later and staying settled through | :26:41. | :26:50.
the weekend. Just to let yot know about something they are dohng | :26:51. | :26:54.

biggest railway landslip in living memory. Creus there have bedn | :26:58. | :27:03.
working around the clock to get things back online and tomorrow we | :27:04. | :27:07.
