Good evening. The number of people killed or seriously injured in road | :00:09. | :00:13.
accidents has fallen by just over a third since speed cameras wdre | :00:14. | :00:16.
introduced in Oxfordshire. The figure are from Thames Valldy | :00:17. | :00:20.
Police. Road safety campaigners say it's evidence the cameras s`ve | :00:21. | :00:23.
lives, but critics have questioned whether other factors may h`ve | :00:24. | :00:26.
played a part. Stuart Tinworth's been investigating. | :00:27. | :00:29.
Well, supporters say finallx this is conclusive prove that speed cameras | :00:30. | :00:33.
really do make our roads safer. The first cameras were installed in | :00:34. | :00:38.
Oxfordshire in 1993. Since then an average of 23 people have bden | :00:39. | :00:41.
killed or seriously injured each year on the roads compared to an | :00:42. | :00:45.
average of 35 before they wdre put in. The biggest difference has been | :00:46. | :00:50.
recorded on the A338 in East Hanney ` four people were seriouslx killed | :00:51. | :00:58.
or injured between 1990 and 199 . But with the arrival of a speed | :00:59. | :01:01.
camera there were no recorddd injuries in the next 18 years. This | :01:02. | :01:07.
is one of the first studies that have been done into Oxfordshire | :01:08. | :01:10.
speed cameras in the last fdw years. It's great that it is posithve. It | :01:11. | :01:17.
shows speed cameras have a big impact on casualties on the road. Of | :01:18. | :01:24.
course, a lot has changed in 20 years. Cars have become safdr and | :01:25. | :01:27.
some critics have questioned whether the numbers are really simply down | :01:28. | :01:32.
to cameras. Only 6% of all `ccidents has speed as a factor and not a | :01:33. | :01:42.
cause. The most cameras do hs reduce the effect of and accident. In | :01:43. | :01:49.
Swindon the council turned off its cameras in 2009 and says thd overall | :01:50. | :01:52.
number of accidents has dropped since then, but people we spoke to | :01:53. | :02:01.
largely supported them. People are wary of them. Police don't dnforce | :02:02. | :02:25.
the speed limit. They are ddfinitely affectiives, definitely in trban | :02:26. | :02:27.
areas. Oxfordshire alone has 68 fixed cameras across the cotnty but | :02:28. | :02:31.
the debate as to whether thdy really do make a difference isn't over yet. | :02:32. | :02:34.
A former soldier from Swindon has told the BBC his family is being | :02:35. | :02:38.
torn apart by new rules on immigration. Trev Rungasarmx served | :02:39. | :02:41.
ten years in the army, incltding tours of Afghanistan and Ir`q. But | :02:42. | :02:44.
his wife is being denied entry to the UK because he doesn't e`rn | :02:45. | :02:49.
enough. Trev Rungasamy has served his country. He was born in South | :02:50. | :02:55.
Africa and was in the British Army for ten years, serving in | :02:56. | :03:00.
Afghanistan and Iraq. He has lived in Swindon and is now a UK citizen | :03:01. | :03:04.
but cannot ring his wife and children to the UK because he does | :03:05. | :03:10.
not earn enough. The first tour was a war fighting tour in Afgh`nistan. | :03:11. | :03:15.
The second one was in Iraqi. I nearly lost my life. I was shocked | :03:16. | :03:24.
by a sniper. My wife stood by me. Trev Rungasamy has moved to London | :03:25. | :03:30.
in search of a job paying over ?18,600. That is the level of the | :03:31. | :03:35.
government threshold introdtced three years ago. I live for my | :03:36. | :03:42.
children and my wife. It is just a sad situation I am in right now It | :03:43. | :03:46.
is breaking me emotionally `nd I feel so let down by the system. The | :03:47. | :03:51.
Home Office did not want to be interviewed, partly because they are | :03:52. | :03:56.
subject to a legal challengd. But in a statement they said: | :03:57. | :04:10.
it is Conservative Party policy to reduce net migration to the UK to be | :04:11. | :04:17.
tens of thousands, but the latest figures show that immigration is | :04:18. | :04:21.
rising. If the High Court does decide the new income rules are too | :04:22. | :04:26.
strict, it will make meeting that commitment even harder. | :04:27. | :04:30.
Concerns are being raised about the number of vacant posts at South | :04:31. | :04:33.
Central Ambulance Service, which covers Oxfordshire and | :04:34. | :04:35.
Buckinghamshire. The Unite tnion's worried that 265 vacancies need to | :04:36. | :04:39.
be filled while demand for their service is increasing. The @mbulance | :04:40. | :04:43.
Service says there's a national shortage of paramedics and ht's | :04:44. | :04:46.
looking to recruit both expdrienced and newly qualified staff. | :04:47. | :04:52.
A public inquiry will be held into plans to build one of the bhggest | :04:53. | :04:55.
solar farms in the country near Swindon. The borough council's | :04:56. | :04:58.
approved the project, which involves installing more than 150,000 solar | :04:59. | :05:01.
panels on the former RAF Wroughton airfield. There's been opposition to | :05:02. | :05:05.
the plan from evironmental groups and the government has decided a | :05:06. | :05:09.
public inquiry is necessary. There'll be fewer dragonflids in | :05:10. | :05:12.
Oxfordshire this summer bec`use of the wet winter. And one | :05:13. | :05:15.
environmental group says thdre could be more mosquitoes because the | :05:16. | :05:18.
dragon flies won't be around to feed on them. Sinead Carroll's bden to | :05:19. | :05:22.
the Oxford Canal in Kidlington to investigate. | :05:23. | :05:26.
A dragonfly's life is brief. It mates, lays eggs and dies all within | :05:27. | :05:31.
a few months. But dragonfly lavae can live for three years. Now the | :05:32. | :05:36.
lava is not just underwater, it s under threat. Bankside visitation | :05:37. | :05:42.
like this is where the lavad comes to hatch, but much of it has been | :05:43. | :05:47.
damaged during the recent floods. However, we have found some. This | :05:48. | :05:57.
lava was inside the pond. Once the lava are ready to hatch the | :05:58. | :06:00.
dragonflies cling to reeds like this. But many dragonfly won't hatch | :06:01. | :06:06.
this Summer ` the lavae has already been washed away by fast currents. | :06:07. | :06:11.
Dragonflies and damselflies indicate good water quality. A dragonfly can | :06:12. | :06:20.
eat it their body weight in mosquitoes and midges in just 3 | :06:21. | :06:24.
minutes. They help to maint`in the environment. So fewer dragonflies | :06:25. | :06:28.
could mean more of their prdy, like mosquitoes, survive. The Canal and | :06:29. | :06:31.
River Trust want us to monitor the weather's impact on wildlifd. You | :06:32. | :06:34.
don't have to pond dip, just recording the species found nearby | :06:35. | :06:46.
rivers, canals and ponds ponds. That is it from now. The regional weather | :06:47. | :06:52.
forecast is coming up now. @ lot of Crown during the course of the | :06:53. | :06:56.
weekend. Saturday will be bd drier of the two days. On Sunday there | :06:57. | :07:01.
will be heavy rain. Temperatures tonight going down to six or seven | :07:02. | :07:05.
Celsius. In the second half of the night there will be a lot of cloud | :07:06. | :07:10.
and he'll fork. That is how things will be set up through Saturday | :07:11. | :07:18.
Lots of low cloud around. Occasionally, some patches of light | :07:19. | :07:23.
or showery rain across the region. But many of you will have a largely | :07:24. | :07:29.
dry day. Temperatures tomorrow about 13 degrees. Similar temperatures for | :07:30. | :07:33.
Sunday, | :07:34. | :07:35. |
