Good evening. An inquest into the by Boko Haram, but now on BBC | :00:00. | :00:12.
Good evening. An inquest into the death of a man from Witney has | :00:13. | :00:16.
concluded he was unlawfully killed. Melvin Hillier, who was 52, was | :00:17. | :00:19.
found at The Tower Centre in Carterton last year. Three people | :00:20. | :00:22.
were arrested at the time on suspicion of murder, but no charges | :00:23. | :00:28.
followed. Peter Cooke has more. Larger than life and a successful | :00:29. | :00:32.
businessman. All seemed well for Oxford`born Melvin Hillier until a | :00:33. | :00:35.
serious traffic accident in 2003 left him with mobility problems. He | :00:36. | :00:40.
struggled to find work and began drinking heavily, quickly becoming | :00:41. | :00:52.
an alcoholic. His house was used as a base for other drinkers and his | :00:53. | :00:55.
family, seen here arriving at court, said because he was so generous, | :00:56. | :00:58.
many would take advantage. The night before he died he went to stay with | :00:59. | :01:02.
a friend in Alvescot Road in Carterton. That evening he suffered | :01:03. | :01:06.
a broken nose, black eye and a head injury. He was found dead the | :01:07. | :01:08.
following morning. Three other people were in the house at the time | :01:09. | :01:13.
` two men, aged 49 and 59, and a woman, aged 28. All were arrested on | :01:14. | :01:16.
suspicion of murder but later released without charge. A | :01:17. | :01:19.
postmortem showed he died from blunt impact to the head. Coroner Darren | :01:20. | :01:22.
Salter said he was confident Mr Hillier was punched and that's what | :01:23. | :01:26.
caused his death. The police say they're keeping the investigation | :01:27. | :01:30.
under review. The president of the Oxford Union | :01:31. | :01:34.
has been released on bail, after being arrested on suspicion of rape | :01:35. | :01:38.
and attempted rape. It's thought Benjamin Sullivan, who's 21, is a | :01:39. | :01:43.
student at Christ Church College. He was elected head of the debating | :01:44. | :01:47.
society in December. Oxford University has declined to comment. | :01:48. | :01:52.
A controversial hostel for young people in Oxford is to be wound down | :01:53. | :01:56.
and possibly closed. One Foot Forward on Iffley Road offers | :01:57. | :02:01.
housing for 16 to 25`year`olds. But some people who live near the hostel | :02:02. | :02:04.
have complained about anti`social behaviour for the last decade. Now | :02:05. | :02:07.
the County Council's planning a number of smaller units instead. | :02:08. | :02:16.
Katharine da Costa reports. And five Iffley Road, home to around | :02:17. | :02:23.
20 homeless and vulnerable young adults. For many, though, they are | :02:24. | :02:28.
unwanted neighbours. People are concerned about the behaviour | :02:29. | :02:30.
outside the entrance to the building, they have been robberies | :02:31. | :02:40.
of passers`by, abusing, fights. This altercation was recorded by our own | :02:41. | :02:43.
camera crew back in November. But there are those who support the | :02:44. | :02:47.
hostel and the work it does here. One neighbour told me she brought | :02:48. | :02:52.
the making of chocolates at Christmas. I have spoken to some of | :02:53. | :02:55.
the young people themselves, who didn't want to appear on camera, and | :02:56. | :02:59.
they say they have been misunderstood and unfairly judged. | :03:00. | :03:04.
It is easy to understand why. They all have very different needs, | :03:05. | :03:07.
ranging from mental health problems to criminal convictions. I think | :03:08. | :03:14.
it's a lethal cocktail of the perpetrators of crimes and people | :03:15. | :03:17.
who are just victims, a combination of those two is a dangerous mix. | :03:18. | :03:23.
That is why we have been asking for smaller units, more secure units. | :03:24. | :03:29.
This woman lived before she was murdered in December last year. | :03:30. | :03:34.
Councillor Williams thinks her death printed a serious rethink into how | :03:35. | :03:40.
services are run. They can to cancel says plans for smaller homes have | :03:41. | :03:43.
been on the cards for a while. The first is expected to open later this | :03:44. | :03:47.
year. Up to a thousand jobs are at risk at | :03:48. | :03:51.
the Kenco coffee factory in Banbury because of restructuring plans. The | :03:52. | :03:54.
owner, Mondelez International, is selling half of its coffee business | :03:55. | :03:58.
to create a new company. The factory has been the main employer in | :03:59. | :04:01.
Banbury for 50 years and produces 100 million jars of instant coffee | :04:02. | :04:06.
every year. The Unite Union has called the move highly unsettling. | :04:07. | :04:13.
Children at a nursery in Bicester have been stopped from playing | :04:14. | :04:15.
outside, since a footbridge was built over the railway line. It was | :04:16. | :04:20.
put up over the bank holiday weekend, and even though the nursery | :04:21. | :04:24.
was told about it, staff there say they had no idea how big it would | :04:25. | :04:28.
be. Now they claim it's not safe for children to be in the garden. The | :04:29. | :04:37.
gardens where we grow one hour of fruit and vegetables but | :04:38. | :04:39.
unfortunately, at the moment, the garden is unsafe. Even when the | :04:40. | :04:45.
footbridge opens, the children will be put immediately at risk by | :04:46. | :04:48.
passers`by and people being able to access our children. Network Rail | :04:49. | :04:51.
and Chiltern Railways say they're working to find a solution. | :04:52. | :04:56.
Around 25,000 people in the Thames Valley are thought to be living with | :04:57. | :04:59.
dementia. With that number growing, people are now being recruited to | :05:00. | :05:02.
become "Dementia Friends". Victoria Cook has more. | :05:03. | :05:07.
Jan and Ralph Burridge have been married for 59 years. He was | :05:08. | :05:11.
diagnosed with vascular dementia three years ago. Now his wife is his | :05:12. | :05:18.
full time carer. Something she says can be soul destroying. Very often | :05:19. | :05:28.
don't know what you're saying, but your member afterwards, don't you? | :05:29. | :05:37.
He does apologise. `` you remember afterwards. He has a sense of | :05:38. | :05:41.
humour. Around 25,000 people in the Thames Valley area live with | :05:42. | :05:52.
dementia. Leading charities now want more of us to understand the | :05:53. | :05:55.
condition and in doing so become what they're calling a "dementia | :05:56. | :06:03.
friend". The idea is that people can discover the small ` but significant | :06:04. | :06:06.
` things they can do for those affected. For the first time | :06:07. | :06:09.
tonight, this advert for the campaign will be shown in full. It | :06:10. | :06:13.
includes all of all the celebrities backing the new idea. If you know | :06:14. | :06:21.
three people over the age of 65, the chart is one of them will develop | :06:22. | :06:24.
dementia so it is important we do something about it as a society, and | :06:25. | :06:29.
make sure we have the resources and services to help those people. For | :06:30. | :06:32.
Jan and Ralph Burridge, it's something they see as vital. | :06:33. | :06:39.
Now if you'd like to get in touch with us, to tell us about stories | :06:40. | :06:42.
you think we should be covering ` you can e`mail us. | :06:43. | :06:52.
A lot of cloud not, perhaps the odd shower, band of rain working its way | :06:53. | :06:59.
in from the West, that could be under heavy side tomorrow. A mild | :07:00. | :07:03.
night tonight, down into double digits. It will be a wet start for | :07:04. | :07:10.
some tomorrow, a band of very heavy, persistent rainfall work its way | :07:11. | :07:14.
through southern areas to the rush hour, following that, drier period, | :07:15. | :07:20.
some showers to follow, which will band in a line. Highest tomorrow of | :07:21. | :07:27.
14 Celsius. It stays unsettled for the rest of the week, thundery | :07:28. | :07:31.
showers are possible Friday and Saturday. | :07:32. | :07:32.
looks right as we look into Friday. But more rain for the weekend. Now | :07:33. | :07:41.
we have the UK outlook. Spring last year might have been the | :07:42. | :07:46.
coldest in years, but we have already had the highest temperature | :07:47. | :07:48.
so far. But we're nowhere near | :07:49. | :07:49. |
