Hello and welcome to South Today from Oxford. In tonight's programme: | :00:00. | :00:07.
The toll on his physical and mental health. We hear from a man who has | :00:08. | :00:11.
been in prison in the Philippines for five years without a trial. | :00:12. | :00:17.
Also tonight: Living with lupus. The man on a mission to make people | :00:18. | :00:20.
aware of the debilitating illness so they can spot the symptoms and get | :00:21. | :00:25.
help. How this giant screw will provide | :00:26. | :00:28.
enough energy to make Blenheim Palace greener. | :00:29. | :00:34.
And later on ` from the brink. The success story of breeding peregrine | :00:35. | :00:48.
falcons in the South. Good evening. A man from Swindon who | :00:49. | :00:52.
is being held in a Filipino jail has spoken publicly for the first time | :00:53. | :00:56.
about the toll it is taking on his mental health. 48`year`old Kevin | :00:57. | :00:59.
Taylor has been in prison for five years but is still waiting for a | :01:00. | :01:03.
trial. He is accused of being involved in illegal immigration with | :01:04. | :01:07.
his Filipino wife. His parents have spent ?18,000 fighting his case. | :01:08. | :01:13.
Sarah Jane Bungay has the story. Kevin Taylor in happier times. He | :01:14. | :01:17.
had made a life for himself in the Philippines ` a wife, three young | :01:18. | :01:20.
children, and his own business. But then everything changed. Kevin's | :01:21. | :01:23.
wife, Charlene, has detailed his arrest on her blog. She says it was | :01:24. | :01:28.
in May 2009 that he was taken on suspicion of illegal recruitment. | :01:29. | :01:32.
Kevin has always claimed that it was disgruntled former employees of his | :01:33. | :01:36.
company who brought the accusations. He completely denies them. But his | :01:37. | :01:41.
wife is now also under arrest. He has been speaking to the BBC about | :01:42. | :01:46.
their time behind bars. I sleep on the floor, on a mat. I have done | :01:47. | :01:52.
that for the last five years now. I suffer from boils a lot and skin | :01:53. | :01:56.
rashes. So I get some depression tablets every day ` that helps. For | :01:57. | :02:03.
Kevin's parents, from Swindon, it has meant a huge financial toll. | :02:04. | :02:06.
?18,000 of savings have gone on trying to resolve the situation. We | :02:07. | :02:12.
have always said that if he has done what they say he did, then they have | :02:13. | :02:17.
to put him on trial and he has to take his chances on whatever | :02:18. | :02:24.
sentence he gets. But do not do it this way. This is not right. This is | :02:25. | :02:34.
the way that the legal system works in the Philippines. We have built | :02:35. | :02:42.
our hopes up but then either because the prosecution or the defence or a | :02:43. | :02:47.
witness does not turn up the whole case falls. Today the Foreign and | :02:48. | :02:50.
Commonwealth Office told us it remains in direct contact with Kevin | :02:51. | :02:53.
by letters or telephone but adds that it is unable to interfere in | :02:54. | :02:56.
the judicial process of another country and must respect its legal | :02:57. | :03:00.
system. I have not seen my daughters for 18 months. It is heartbreaking | :03:01. | :03:07.
really. You miss them so much. Kevin is now pinning his hopes of the 3rd | :03:08. | :03:11.
of July when his case will, once again, come before a judge in the | :03:12. | :03:15.
Philippines. Sarah Jane Bungay, BBC Points West. | :03:16. | :03:17.
Laura Bevan is from Prisoners Abroad, a charity which helps people | :03:18. | :03:21.
like Kevin financially. They provide food and medical aid. Laura spoke to | :03:22. | :03:26.
me a little earlier and I asked her what the conditions were like in | :03:27. | :03:30.
prison there. I believe they are almost the most | :03:31. | :03:33.
overcrowded prisons in that area of Asia. This can mean that disease can | :03:34. | :03:39.
spread very quickly and the unsanitary conditions can really | :03:40. | :03:41.
exacerbate any health conditions that people have. Also, being in | :03:42. | :03:46.
prison overseas can really make your mental health deteriorate. It can be | :03:47. | :03:53.
very difficult being far from home. Five years seems like a long time to | :03:54. | :03:57.
be imprisoned without a trial. How common is that kind of situation? | :03:58. | :04:02.
Prisoners Abroad does not get involved in the legal process, but | :04:03. | :04:05.
certainly we are supporting people through very long periods of | :04:06. | :04:08.
detention and we are there to help people right from their period of | :04:09. | :04:11.
arrest through to their time of release, which can be any number of | :04:12. | :04:15.
years. We will help them with whatever they need help with during | :04:16. | :04:18.
that time. Those kinds of conditions sound like they would take a big | :04:19. | :04:21.
toll on someone physically and mentally. That is right. People have | :04:22. | :04:30.
told us that even if they didn't go into prison with a health condition, | :04:31. | :04:33.
one can develop while they are there. They are not getting the | :04:34. | :04:37.
right diet, clean water to drink, and the medical care that they need. | :04:38. | :04:40.
That is why people need the services of Prisoners Abroad. They need our | :04:41. | :04:44.
grants regularly just to help them survive what would otherwise be | :04:45. | :04:46.
dire, and often life`threatening, conditions in prison. Laura Bevan, | :04:47. | :04:50.
thank you. Thank you. The treasurer of the Oxford Union | :04:51. | :04:53.
has resigned from his post following an allegation of rape against the | :04:54. | :04:56.
society's president. 21`year`old Benjamin Sullivan was arrested and | :04:57. | :04:58.
bailed last week after being questioned over accusations of rape | :04:59. | :05:03.
and attempted rape. Charles Malton, a student at Christ Church college, | :05:04. | :05:06.
said he was leaving his role over the way the debating society had | :05:07. | :05:14.
handled the allegations. A man has appeared in court after | :05:15. | :05:18.
being arrested by police who raided a pub in Oxford in a major drugs | :05:19. | :05:21.
operation. Thames Valley Police carried out the operation at the | :05:22. | :05:25.
Nelson Pub on Between Towns Road in Cowley on Friday night. Kenston | :05:26. | :05:28.
McIntosh, who is 55 and from Freeland Road in Oxford, was | :05:29. | :05:31.
arrested on suspicion of possession of Class A drugs with intent to | :05:32. | :05:34.
supply. The force said a large amount of cash was seized from | :05:35. | :05:37.
another man. Honda has confirmed it will be | :05:38. | :05:40.
making ninety`nine compulsory redundancies at its Swindon plant | :05:41. | :05:43.
before the end of the month. The firm had been appealing for workers | :05:44. | :05:46.
to volunteer for redundancy, after announcing more than 300 positions | :05:47. | :05:50.
had to go. Honda has blamed continuing poor sales in Europe for | :05:51. | :05:54.
its decision to close one of its two plants in South Marston. | :05:55. | :06:02.
The health condition lupus can be very debilitating, even life | :06:03. | :06:05.
threatening, but it is also very difficult to diagnose. A man from | :06:06. | :06:08.
Wantage in Oxfordshire has made it his mission to highlight the | :06:09. | :06:11.
symptoms in the hope that more people will recognise the signs and | :06:12. | :06:15.
go to their GPs. Caroline Richardson reports. | :06:16. | :06:21.
By his own admission, Jon Kingdon is the oldest teenager in town. At 61, | :06:22. | :06:28.
he does not drive a sensible family hatchback. He likes to attract | :06:29. | :06:31.
attention with his souped`up Mercedes and banging sound system | :06:32. | :06:38.
because he has a message. Lupus can affect anyone, but 90 per cent of | :06:39. | :06:43.
the sufferers are women. It can affect your skin, muscles, joints, | :06:44. | :06:49.
and internal organs. Jon's symptoms started with fatigue and joint pain. | :06:50. | :06:52.
Doctors thought it was rheumatoid arthritis. Then serious heart | :06:53. | :06:57.
problems led to open`heart surgery and the eventual diagnosis of lupus. | :06:58. | :07:02.
It is very hard to diagnose. I know people who have been misdiagnosed | :07:03. | :07:06.
for 17 years, or not diagnosed at all. I was lucky because I had a | :07:07. | :07:12.
doctor who knew about lupus. Combining his twin loves of cars and | :07:13. | :07:16.
1970s soul and funk, Jon is a familiar sight at car shows raising | :07:17. | :07:21.
money and awareness for Lupus UK. My car has now been transformed into | :07:22. | :07:25.
the Lupus Mercedes and it is well known around the circuits. I play an | :07:26. | :07:31.
Internet radio station and I also play 1970s soul in the car. It is | :07:32. | :07:38.
all that is allowed. An Oxfordshire cricket club that was | :07:39. | :07:41.
severely damaged after being struck by lightning has been demolished. | :07:42. | :07:44.
Banbury Twenty Cricket Club, on Ermont Way, caught fire in March | :07:45. | :07:48.
during a thunder storm. The club has been run from the same site since | :07:49. | :07:51.
the 1930s and all its memorabilia was destroyed. | :07:52. | :08:03.
It is a move designed to make Blenheim Palace one of the cleanest | :08:04. | :08:06.
stately homes in the country. Today, a giant screw has been installed | :08:07. | :08:10.
inside the palace grounds to harness power from a river on the estate. | :08:11. | :08:13.
The project, which has cost nearly ?200,000, aims to cut carbon | :08:14. | :08:16.
emissions at one of Oxfordshire's biggest tourist attractions. | :08:17. | :08:18.
Katharine DaCosta has been to find out more. | :08:19. | :08:21.
It has taken four years of painstaking design and planning, but | :08:22. | :08:24.
today a giant corkscrew was very carefully manoeuvred into place on | :08:25. | :08:27.
the River Glyme in the heart of the Blenheim estate. The Archimedean | :08:28. | :08:30.
screw is designed to harness the water's natural energy. The screw | :08:31. | :08:34.
sits on a 22 degree angle and as the water falls with gravity from the | :08:35. | :08:37.
top of the screw down to the bottom, the weight of the water trying to | :08:38. | :08:41.
get to the bottom pushes on the screw and causes it to rotate. At | :08:42. | :08:45.
the top, we have a generator, which catches that rotational movement and | :08:46. | :08:48.
turns it into electricity. Over in South Oxfordshire, this scheme in | :08:49. | :08:51.
Maple Durham is already generating electricity. This turbine was | :08:52. | :08:54.
installed at the last working water mill on the River Thames in 2011. | :08:55. | :08:57.
And there are dozens more pioneering projects being planned along the | :08:58. | :09:01.
Thames. The Blenheim Project is relatively small in comparison, but | :09:02. | :09:04.
it is part of the estate's mission to become the country's greenest | :09:05. | :09:07.
stately home. It has already installed solar panels and a ground | :09:08. | :09:12.
source heat pump. This hydropower scheme should save a further ?5,500 | :09:13. | :09:19.
from its energy bills. Unlike wind and solar, hydro power does not rely | :09:20. | :09:23.
on the weather so it can operate all year around. This particular scheme | :09:24. | :09:27.
is designed to generate 15 kilowatts of electricity. That is enough to | :09:28. | :09:34.
power the equivalent of 20 homes. And any surplus energy generated can | :09:35. | :09:40.
be sold to the National Grid. With a 40`60 year life span, this giant | :09:41. | :09:43.
turbine has provided a modern twist to this historic estate. Katharine | :09:44. | :09:56.
DaCosta, BBC South Today. That is all from me for the moment. | :09:57. | :10:00.
I will have the headlines at 8PM and a full bulletin at 10.25PM. Now, | :10:01. | :10:04.
more of today's stories with Sally Taylor. | :10:05. | :10:27.
It sounds like a scene from a cold war movie, but it is happening | :10:28. | :10:40.
regularly just now. She is Russia's biggest warship. As she came up the | :10:41. | :10:49.
channel, another was sent out to do what is now in a naval circles as a | :10:50. | :10:55.
meet and greet. We are fellow professionals. We tend to exchange | :10:56. | :11:01.
niceties. We have a look to see what they have in place. It was the | :11:02. | :11:06.
second monitoring mission in several months. In April, she was of | :11:07. | :11:15.
Scotland. Jets have also been used to intercept Russian surveillance | :11:16. | :11:19.
aircraft. The Ministry of Defence says a frigate or a destroyer is | :11:20. | :11:24.
always ready to respond quickly to any incidents. The Navy captain | :11:25. | :11:32.
described a squirt in Russian ships to international waters as routine | :11:33. | :11:37.
business. Defence analysts say that cuts mean that the UK had less | :11:38. | :11:44.
crafts and jets to monitor the Russians. If we're going to cover | :11:45. | :11:49.
the Russians every time we will have to more ships or have a maritime | :11:50. | :11:53.
patrol aircraft. ourselves a maritime capability, | :11:54. | :11:57.
which was act when we lost the nimrods. | :11:58. | :12:33.
HMS alliance before and after it was refitted. Prince William last saw | :12:34. | :12:41.
the submarine in 2008 when it was on its last legs. Six years later, the | :12:42. | :12:52.
Prince saw her in good form. As Commodore in chief of submarines it | :12:53. | :12:56.
was appropriate that William was there as he attended a rededication | :12:57. | :13:03.
service for the boat. He was any good spirits. It was made to look as | :13:04. | :13:10.
if it was operational. He met veteran mariners. There is nothing | :13:11. | :13:20.
to break here. He said, you say that. He was easy to talk to. It was | :13:21. | :13:26.
a pleasure and a privilege. It was fantastic that the prince came. It | :13:27. | :13:29.
brings great attention and attraction. Prince William was given | :13:30. | :13:36.
a top of run and presented with a badge. There is no doubt that this | :13:37. | :13:42.
vessel has come a long way. It's ?7 million face`lift means its | :13:43. | :13:49.
existence has been extended, allowing visitors to enjoy her in | :13:50. | :13:50.
the years to come. falcons disappeared from the south. | :13:51. | :14:20.
But now there are about 40 pairs across the south of England. | :14:21. | :14:28.
It is a secret mission to help a rare bird. These birds have been | :14:29. | :14:35.
persecuted for a number of years. People will take the eggs because | :14:36. | :14:37.
they are collectors or they will take the checks for topping three | :14:38. | :14:39.
will stop. the youngest member of the squad. | :14:40. | :16:36.
Southampton fans heard there were major offers for two of that trio. | :16:37. | :16:44.
The Saints players had a lap of honour yesterday. Today, some of the | :16:45. | :16:50.
players got the call ups they had dreams. They deserved it. It is | :16:51. | :17:00.
unbelievable for the club. It is an amazing time for all Saints fans. I | :17:01. | :17:06.
think it is great that they have made it. Look sharp, what can you | :17:07. | :17:18.
say. `` Luke Shaw. The guys have performed outstandingly the season. | :17:19. | :17:23.
They have been spoken about at an international level. It is well | :17:24. | :17:30.
deserved. Southampton finished the season eight in the table. | :17:31. | :17:36.
Yesterday, they drew with Manchester United. The reward for Saints, | :17:37. | :17:49.
considerable money. Shaw Is now being targeted by United. One player | :17:50. | :17:55.
spoke to the BBC this afternoon. We have done well. We have got a | :17:56. | :18:12.
great blend of players. There are younger players as well. It is | :18:13. | :18:21.
exciting. They were preparing to lay a new pitch at St Mary 's. The fans | :18:22. | :18:26.
will hope that the players will be back in August. | :18:27. | :18:35.
Well done to everyone. Brighton have announced that they have accepted | :18:36. | :18:41.
the resignation of the boss. They lost 4`1 last night. They ended any | :18:42. | :18:53.
hopes of reaching Wembley. Garcia was that the club for a year. | :18:54. | :19:01.
We have a special guest. Congratulations. They performed | :19:02. | :19:09.
brilliantly on the day. It was a tremendous atmosphere. It is a small | :19:10. | :19:14.
crowd for a Wembley final, but they made noise. The celebrations have | :19:15. | :19:22.
been going on all weekend. Let us see what they did this afternoon at | :19:23. | :19:28.
the City Hall. They were still on a high 48 hours after the match. This | :19:29. | :19:35.
was Wembley. Here is the most important goal in the club's | :19:36. | :19:42.
history. All the fans enjoyed it and they celebrated on the pitch and | :19:43. | :19:46.
through the night. It was the best moment of my life. Brilliant. They | :19:47. | :20:00.
did their job, I did my job. We did not want to make a mistake on the | :20:01. | :20:05.
big stage. I am still on the ceiling to be honest. My dreams have come | :20:06. | :20:23.
true. Picking up the trophy was something that really affected me | :20:24. | :20:30.
inside. It will stay in my memories. That was his last game as the | :20:31. | :20:36.
manager. Well done. A lot of people have been asking what happened to | :20:37. | :20:48.
the drone. It seems to have hit the water. I think it is at the bottom | :20:49. | :20:57.
of the sea. It is such a disappointment for the boys from | :20:58. | :21:01.
Southampton University. It was the wind. Here are some pictures. | :21:02. | :21:18.
There are showers with Hill today. `` hail. Temperatures, 5`6 Celsius. | :21:19. | :21:37.
Showers through the night. Temperatures tonight, 6`7 Celsius. | :21:38. | :21:47.
Tomorrow, showers. They will disappear, but will return in the | :21:48. | :21:51.
afternoon. There could be some thunder. Temperatures tomorrow, | :21:52. | :22:06.
15`16 Celsius. The wind is like. `` The winds will be light. The showers | :22:07. | :22:13.
will ease tomorrow night. Similar temperatures to today. Up to around | :22:14. | :22:21.
10 degrees in the towns and the cities. High pressure is building | :22:22. | :22:30.
and through Wednesday, Thursday, and even the weekend, the high`pressure | :22:31. | :22:36.
will remain. It will be settled. There will be some sunshine. There | :22:37. | :22:46.
is warm air coming our way. By the end of the week it will be lovely | :22:47. | :22:56.
and warm. Temperatures, 19`20dC. Looking pleasant towards the end of | :22:57. | :23:02.
the week. Some showers in the next few days. Some rest of showers on | :23:03. | :23:08.
Wednesday, but it will be dry on Thursday and Friday. | :23:09. | :23:18.
A challenge for the starters of hearts `` boat . He is looking to | :23:19. | :23:30.
break the world mile `` the world record by covering 200 miles in a | :23:31. | :23:36.
day. For this man, Goodwood was the scene | :23:37. | :23:42.
for the moment that changed his life. Now he hopes it will see his | :23:43. | :23:49.
triumph. It was 14 years ago that Steve lost his leg when a car | :23:50. | :23:56.
collided with him at 100 miles an hour. But his love of motorsports | :23:57. | :24:02.
have endured. He still marshals at international events. Today he was | :24:03. | :24:10.
at a practice session for his own 24 hour into this challenge. The tyres | :24:11. | :24:17.
are holding up well. Next weekend, Steve plans to travel 200 miles | :24:18. | :24:24.
around a special circuit in a mobility scooter. I was lucky that I | :24:25. | :24:31.
had 40 years as an able`bodied person. I was sadly involved in an | :24:32. | :24:37.
accident and I have had to rediscover who I am. Part of this is | :24:38. | :24:46.
this challenge. 53`year`old Steve attempted the record two years ago | :24:47. | :24:50.
but was aborted by the weather and since then an American has claimed | :24:51. | :24:55.
the title. I know that I can stay awake for 24 hours and ride. It is | :24:56. | :25:00.
down to making it happen and we claiming the record for England. | :25:01. | :25:05.
Hopefully it will also be a personal victory for Steve when the flag | :25:06. | :25:14.
falls. What a great attitude. Very positive. Good luck. That is all | :25:15. | :25:26.
