And Good evening. The Deputy Prime Minister has been in Oxford this | :00:27. | :00:29.
afternoon. Nick Clegg had offered more than 100 local people the rare | :00:30. | :00:33.
chance to quiz him face to face on any issue they liked. But his visit | :00:34. | :00:37.
was controversial with some students in the city who feel that his party | :00:38. | :00:41.
has let them down. This from our Political reporter Helen Catt. It | :00:42. | :00:48.
was a direct line for the people of Oxford to the big man himself. Nick | :00:49. | :00:52.
Clegg offered a no holds barred question session this lunchtime with | :00:53. | :01:11.
no topic apparently off the table. In 40 minutes of questioning, Mr | :01:12. | :01:14.
Clegg answered questions on whistle`blowing and the Ukraine. | :01:15. | :01:16.
Surprisingly little, though, considering it's two days till the | :01:17. | :01:19.
local elections, on Oxfordshire. I thought it was really good and | :01:20. | :01:22.
interesting to meet a politician that you see almost every week. He | :01:23. | :01:27.
was surprisingly human, actually. As always, like a politician, he's | :01:28. | :01:30.
always going to give see`saw answers, not really making a mark, | :01:31. | :01:33.
but I thought he definitely made a new statement about tuition fees. A | :01:34. | :01:37.
few streets away and a few hours later, some Oxford students were | :01:38. | :01:39.
giving their own statements about tuition fees. They are angry that | :01:40. | :01:43.
the Liberal Democrats went back on a pledge not to increase them. We | :01:44. | :01:46.
don't think the Nick Clegg should be able to come onto our campus when he | :01:47. | :01:51.
ran on a platform of free education and when he got into power, we | :01:52. | :01:54.
suddenly have fees of 9000. And Nick Clegg's answer today? I am not Prime | :01:55. | :01:58.
Minister, we did not win. People can't think we came third at | :01:59. | :02:01.
election and have a right to implement our manifesto. It's called | :02:02. | :02:04.
democracy. Away from Oxford, in West Oxfordshire and Cherwell, the Lib | :02:05. | :02:07.
Dems are putting up fewer candidates in Thursday's local elections than | :02:08. | :02:12.
any other party. We are putting forward nationally more candidates | :02:13. | :02:15.
this time than last year but of course I accept that we are fighting | :02:16. | :02:19.
the selections in quite a different context to the context in which they | :02:20. | :02:23.
were last fought. It is voters though we will have the final say on | :02:24. | :02:27.
all of our politicians this Thursday. You can find a full list | :02:28. | :02:32.
of people standing in the local elections on the BBC website. A pond | :02:33. | :02:35.
near Swindon where the boots of a murdered woman were found last week | :02:36. | :02:39.
is due to be completely drained by police tomorrow. Sian o'Callaghan ` | :02:40. | :02:42.
who was also from the town ` was killed by taxi driver, Christopher | :02:43. | :02:46.
Halliwell. Her boots and a shotgun were found in the pond last week. A | :02:47. | :02:49.
woman from Swindon jailed for stealing more than 900 designer | :02:50. | :02:52.
handbags has been ordered to pay back more than ?117,000 ` the | :02:53. | :02:55.
profits she made from selling the bags online. Jayne Rand carried out | :02:56. | :02:58.
a nationwide campaign of shoplifting over three years. If she doesn't pay | :02:59. | :03:02.
the money back in six months she will face further jail time. BBC | :03:03. | :03:05.
South Today has seen figures which show nearly 4000 people in our | :03:06. | :03:08.
region have complained about noisy neighbours in the last year. Oxford | :03:09. | :03:11.
City Council received almost 1500 complaints. But the largest increase | :03:12. | :03:14.
was in West Oxfordshire. Adina Campbell has more. We've discovered | :03:15. | :03:18.
thousands of people across our area could be experiencing excessive | :03:19. | :03:24.
noise. The reports include complaints about loud music, car | :03:25. | :03:29.
alarms or drinkers leaving the pub. Some places do seem to be worse than | :03:30. | :03:35.
others. For example, last year in West Oxfordshire, there was a 31% | :03:36. | :03:38.
increase in the number of complaints on the year before ` up to more than | :03:39. | :03:42.
500. There has been a rise in reported complaints in Cherwell too | :03:43. | :03:46.
` a 10% increase to more than 750 complaints. But for those living in | :03:47. | :03:52.
the Vale of White Horse things are getting better. There they saw a 33% | :03:53. | :03:58.
drop in the number of complaints reported. But one environmental | :03:59. | :04:05.
charity says no one should have to put up with noisy neighbours. Has | :04:06. | :04:10.
been affected by a noisy party at some point or somebody doing some | :04:11. | :04:15.
noisy do`it`yourself job that goes on for weeks so it is a widespread | :04:16. | :04:21.
problem of whether it be the country. Whether the noise is a | :04:22. | :04:32.
problem depends on where you live. Swindon and Oxford saw the most | :04:33. | :04:35.
complaints in the whole of our region. But your council does have | :04:36. | :04:39.
the power to do something ` they can confiscate equipment and fine | :04:40. | :04:41.
people. Cherwell District Council say it's up to us to act, though. We | :04:42. | :04:46.
need to be a bit more proactive in making people aware of what we can | :04:47. | :04:57.
do and promoting responsible behaviour and preserving our formal | :04:58. | :05:02.
powers for cases that really warranted. `` warrant it.. The | :05:03. | :05:12.
reality is most cases don't end up in court. A soft Humpty Dumpty toy, | :05:13. | :05:16.
used in the BBC series Playschool, has been sold for more than ?6000 at | :05:17. | :05:20.
an auctioneers in Oxfordshire. When Sinead Carroll was a little girl she | :05:21. | :05:25.
was a big fan. For her report we travel through ` the arched | :05:26. | :05:39.
window... Hello, Humpty, hello! He was one of Play School's most | :05:40. | :05:42.
recognisable stars, featuring on the first ever programme to be aired on | :05:43. | :05:50.
BBC Two. If you were a child anytime between 1964 and 1988, l then | :05:51. | :05:54.
chances are you were fairly well acquainted with this chap. It is the | :05:55. | :05:58.
first time an example of Humpty has come up for auction. I think Humpty, | :05:59. | :06:01.
out of all thecharacters on Play School, was the one that you | :06:02. | :06:07.
iconically remember most of all. This Humpty is one of around 20 of | :06:08. | :06:11.
the original television toys... And he's seen better days, with a | :06:12. | :06:14.
missing button and a small tear on his collar. But I guess that's what | :06:15. | :06:19.
comes from being an egg sitting on a wall. Humpty, from BBC's Play School | :06:20. | :06:23.
series... The winning bid of ?5000 was actually a sale of 6250` | :06:24. | :06:34.
including a premium. At that price Humpty's new owner` a telephone | :06:35. | :06:36.
bidder and private collector` will no doubt keep this toy somewhere | :06:37. | :06:40.
safe` and on ground level. The little hand is edging towards the | :06:41. | :06:43.
number 11 ` that's means it time for us to go. The weather is next ` | :06:44. | :06:47.
starting with the regional forecast with Sarah Farmer. Goodnight. | :06:48. | :06:55.
The skies were clear overnight tonight and we may see some patchy | :06:56. | :07:07.
mist for rural locations. Clear spells overhead for a time and | :07:08. | :07:10.
temperatures down to a degree and temperatures down to eight degrees | :07:11. | :07:13.
nine degrees. Tomorrow starts on a bright note with quite a fine | :07:14. | :07:16.
morning but we will see the cloud built with a lunchtime period and | :07:17. | :07:20.
through the afternoon sea water to showers drift our way. Top | :07:21. | :07:25.
temperatures around 18 or 19 degrees. It will turn to Risley | :07:26. | :07:29.
through tomorrow evening and then we have a weather warning for some wet | :07:30. | :07:30.
weather going into Thursday. heavy showers but also sunny spells. | :07:31. | :07:32.
Maybe some showers for the weekend. Good evening, yet again we are | :07:33. | :07:42.
finishing the day with some thunderstorms clustered across parts | :07:43. | :07:46.
of Cumbria, some torrential downpours at the moment, and flashes | :07:47. | :07:51.
of lightning. Along the front of this weather system, showers have | :07:52. | :07:57.
developed. They are pushing their way northwards, and will continue to | :07:58. | :08:03.
do so, taking the downpours into Scotland. Behind that, clearer skies | :08:04. | :08:09.
with temperatures dipping down into single | :08:10. | :08:10. |
