Hello and welcome. Tonight, is it a sign of what is to come? The | :00:00. | :00:14.
Conservatives win in Swindon, the town seen as a barometer for the | :00:15. | :00:19.
general election. In West Oxford, UKIP failed to gain the place on the | :00:20. | :00:23.
council they were looking for. A jobs fair is laid on by Honda as the | :00:24. | :00:29.
company drives out 450 workers because of falling car sales. And | :00:30. | :00:34.
later, a shortage of teachers at this school because they cannot | :00:35. | :00:35.
afford to buy homes in the area. Good evening. Politicians, parties | :00:36. | :00:52.
and pundits have had their eyes on our region today, on the town that | :00:53. | :00:57.
seems to predict the outcome of the next general election, Swindon. The | :00:58. | :01:01.
Conservatives have kept control and won seed from Labour. So far the | :01:02. | :01:05.
councils have remained in control of the same political party. Oxford has | :01:06. | :01:11.
remained under Labour control. The Conservatives have held onto | :01:12. | :01:16.
chervil. They have also retained control of West Oxfordshire. In | :01:17. | :01:21.
Swindon, Labour hoped to win seats but the Tories have held on. Votes | :01:22. | :01:25.
in Milton Keynes Dons still being counted. In a moment, I will be | :01:26. | :01:32.
joined by our political reporter, but first this report. Another Tory | :01:33. | :01:41.
win in West Oxfordshire. Of the Conservatives may have been fearing | :01:42. | :01:44.
the UKIP factor, they need not have worried. They gained two seats and | :01:45. | :01:52.
strengthened their position in Cameron's own constituency. Vote | :01:53. | :01:58.
share went up compared to last year. We held councils like Swindon and | :01:59. | :02:02.
Tamworth, which were Labour for many years before. I am confident that in | :02:03. | :02:06.
spite of the difficulties, this is a base from which we can go forward | :02:07. | :02:10.
and win. Labour were celebrating, too. Absolutely thrilled. I cannot | :02:11. | :02:18.
believe it. I did not know which way it would go. I am absolutely | :02:19. | :02:22.
honoured that people have put their faith in me. I am really touched and | :02:23. | :02:30.
excited. They also gained two seats in Cherwell. Swindon is often seen | :02:31. | :02:36.
as a barometer for the country. So Tory relief here, to, as the council | :02:37. | :02:43.
stayed blue. This is probably the best night we have had in the 14 | :02:44. | :02:47.
years I have been coming here. We have racked up record wins. It was | :02:48. | :02:52.
generally a plague on all your houses. We lost seats to UKIP and | :02:53. | :02:59.
that has cost us. Better news for Labour in Oxford. They hold control | :03:00. | :03:04.
of the City Council, finishing with 17 seats. The Lib Dems got five, the | :03:05. | :03:11.
Greens, three. The UKIP vote is essentially a protest vote about | :03:12. | :03:16.
posterity. We understand that. It is something that people feel very | :03:17. | :03:20.
deeply, that this government is not listening and it has caused the cost | :03:21. | :03:24.
of living crisis. We have policies to deal with that. We will deal with | :03:25. | :03:31.
UKIP by doing positive things. No seats for UKIP in Oxfordshire or | :03:32. | :03:36.
Swindon but they did get plenty of votes. We are up with the big boys | :03:37. | :03:43.
and we are sowing the seeds for the next time. Things can look | :03:44. | :03:47.
completely different next time. If that is true, next year's general | :03:48. | :03:51.
election could be hard to predict. I'm joined by Helen CAT. Any news on | :03:52. | :04:01.
Milton Keynes Dons Still not yet. They have been counting all | :04:02. | :04:04.
afternoon. We checked before we came on air and they are still counting. | :04:05. | :04:08.
We will bring you the result as soon as we have it. A good day for the | :04:09. | :04:17.
Conservatives? Yes. Possibly more so than there were expecting. They | :04:18. | :04:21.
would be particularly cheered they did not lose any seats to UKIP in | :04:22. | :04:27.
Oxfordshire, particularly as Nigel Farage was on radio Oxford a few | :04:28. | :04:30.
days ago saying that Oxfordshire was the fastest growing area of support | :04:31. | :04:35.
for his party. David Cameron will also be sweeping a little `` | :04:36. | :04:38.
sleeping a little more soundly tonight knowing that he has held | :04:39. | :04:42.
onto Sweden. That has got to be good news. Labour would be raising a | :04:43. | :04:48.
glass to having taken another seat in his backyard, Chipping Norton, | :04:49. | :04:51.
and in strengthening their position in Oxford. Despite losses, the Lib | :04:52. | :04:56.
Dems do have some comfort. They have held onto several of the seats that | :04:57. | :05:02.
would be in their key target seat of Oxford West and Abingdon in the | :05:03. | :05:06.
general election. Why have we not heard the European results? They | :05:07. | :05:13.
will not be counted until Sunday. Many countries in Europe have not | :05:14. | :05:20.
voted yet. Thank you. Swindon's troubled car factory said goodbye to | :05:21. | :05:25.
450 workers today. Honda is struggling to sell its cars in | :05:26. | :05:28.
Europe and has cut production dramatically. The plant has been | :05:29. | :05:33.
mothballed and the total workforce has fallen from 5000 to 3000. A | :05:34. | :05:39.
special jobs fair was held this morning. There were 200 jobs on | :05:40. | :05:44.
offer in the room and more companies who could not come but can hire. It | :05:45. | :05:49.
was a day to look forward for Honda workers. I have already got an | :05:50. | :05:53.
interview for them `` with them. I am looking forward to that. A new | :05:54. | :05:58.
company that is coming to Swindon. The job I fancy is to work for Aston | :05:59. | :06:05.
Marton. It sounds a good job to me. There were fewer volunteers this | :06:06. | :06:10.
time around. Some 100 people have left jobs at Honda against their | :06:11. | :06:14.
wishes. The unions say that number could have been reduced. More people | :06:15. | :06:27.
could have been kept on but Honda decided to employ contract workers. | :06:28. | :06:32.
They pay them less than Honda workers. As a result we have seen | :06:33. | :06:35.
nearly 100 Honda workers being forced out of their jobs and | :06:36. | :06:39.
contract is staying in their jobs that previously Honda workers were | :06:40. | :06:43.
doing. The company would not talk today, insisting they must remain | :06:44. | :06:48.
flexible. They are doing all they can to safeguard jobs at the plant. | :06:49. | :06:53.
While production slows down here, other car firms are going flat out. | :06:54. | :07:02.
We cannot get hold of some of the cars. Honda was always in the middle | :07:03. | :07:06.
of the range. You are finding that BMW and Audi have brought prices | :07:07. | :07:11.
down, and that is nipping at the top end of Honda. Their main products | :07:12. | :07:18.
are getting squeezed in the middle. Will be `` will this be the last | :07:19. | :07:23.
jobs fair for workers leaving Honda? That depends on Japan. Not the swing | :07:24. | :07:32.
Dhoni and to make the cars that might not the Swindon workers. A | :07:33. | :07:42.
demonstration has been held in Witney. Many of the protestors | :07:43. | :07:46.
suffer from bleeding disorders and claim they were infected after | :07:47. | :07:51.
receiving blood transfusions in the 1970s and 1980s. The Government is | :07:52. | :07:56.
looking into the situation. People feel so frustrated with what has | :07:57. | :07:59.
gone on over the years and the continued procrastination. They have | :08:00. | :08:04.
had enough. We are dying at least one a month now. Over a thousand | :08:05. | :08:11.
people have died. We're running of time. I feel very passionate, very | :08:12. | :08:19.
passionate. It has ruined my life. Take aways are on the increase but | :08:20. | :08:28.
restaurants are falling numbers. Last year saw a rising bakers but a | :08:29. | :08:33.
fall in shoe shops. The Federation of Small Businesses has launched its | :08:34. | :08:37.
keep trade local campaign in Buckinghamshire. | :08:38. | :08:46.
Independent, local and thriving. This shop is keeping a presence on | :08:47. | :08:50.
the high Street because most of the businesses taking place online. We | :08:51. | :08:58.
will never get passing trade back in the high Street again. The way | :08:59. | :09:03.
people shop has changed. There is no regular trade any more on the | :09:04. | :09:08.
high`street. That is what brought the speaker and booking MMP John | :09:09. | :09:12.
Bercow to Winslow today, together with the Federation of Small | :09:13. | :09:15.
Businesses, to highlight the plight of the small independent shop. We | :09:16. | :09:20.
would like a broader mix across the board, rather than ten charity | :09:21. | :09:29.
shops. It would be better to have a butcher and a baker and a hardware | :09:30. | :09:36.
store. Selling pet food has put his business among the winners. We | :09:37. | :09:42.
opened a second shop and got eight freezers. Two and a half years on we | :09:43. | :09:48.
were overwhelmed with the support from the local community and the | :09:49. | :09:53.
Aylesbury community. Last year more independent shops closed than open. | :09:54. | :09:59.
The economy and cost of living will continue to be the political battle | :10:00. | :10:02.
ground between now and polling day next year. All the evidence of | :10:03. | :10:08.
decades of general elections is that they have tended to turn, not | :10:09. | :10:12.
exclusively, but very significantly on how people are doing, how they | :10:13. | :10:17.
think they are going in 12 months to be doing and how they think the | :10:18. | :10:25.
country is doing. And for the speaker, a spot of spontaneous | :10:26. | :10:30.
shopping in the form of pet food. I think he will enjoy his feast. Order | :10:31. | :10:37.
is the name of his cat. There are positive signs of a resurgence in | :10:38. | :10:44.
this sector, but the secret to success is offering a service the | :10:45. | :10:50.
big players cannot compete with. A four`year`old boy from Oxford has | :10:51. | :10:55.
been rescued from the roof of a house in Haddington by firefighters. | :10:56. | :11:01.
George Groves climbed out of a window from the third floor of a | :11:02. | :11:05.
family friend's house and ended up sitting in the covering before being | :11:06. | :11:13.
rescued. I cannot describe how scared I was. I was speechless. My | :11:14. | :11:18.
mind is blank. I don't know what to do. I cannot describe how scared I | :11:19. | :11:23.
was. Any second he could slip off and that is the end of the world. | :11:24. | :11:29.
That is all from me for the moment. I will be back at 10:25pm when we | :11:30. | :11:35.
should know more election results. More on the Sunday Politics. | :11:36. | :11:58.
The work of Cecil Beaton goes on show in Salisbury. Armed police in | :11:59. | :12:09.
Dorset have shot at a vehicle outside a branch of Nationwide | :12:10. | :12:13.
Building Society in Poole. It happened at about eight o'clock last | :12:14. | :12:18.
night in Broadstone. Police had to shoot tyre deflation rounds into the | :12:19. | :12:21.
vehicle to disable it. Three men have been arrested on suspicion of | :12:22. | :12:27.
conspiracy to commit robbery. The families of four British sailors | :12:28. | :12:30.
missing in the Atlantic say they are saddened by news that a US Coast | :12:31. | :12:34.
Guard search could be suspended later tonight if nothing is found. | :12:35. | :12:38.
James Male, from Romsey, and Andrew Bridge from Farnham, have been | :12:39. | :12:43.
missing for the last week. They were part of the crew on the Cheeki | :12:44. | :12:46.
Rafiki, which was sailing back into Southampton when it got into trouble | :12:47. | :12:50.
last week. An RAF Hercules plane will continue searching tomorrow. A | :12:51. | :12:59.
new rail franchise promises new trains, better seats and better | :13:00. | :13:09.
services. The `` it merges the current Thames Link and Southern | :13:10. | :13:19.
roots. Paul Clifton reports. The new company will carry one in | :13:20. | :13:23.
five of all Britain's rail passengers. It will get 1400 new | :13:24. | :13:30.
carriages. Overall it will run 500 more than there are today. That is a | :13:31. | :13:35.
huge increase in capacity. 10,000 more rush`hour seeds each day. Most | :13:36. | :13:42.
of this was already known. But a complete new fleet of Gatwick | :13:43. | :13:45.
Express trains to replace these old ones, that is a surprise. They will | :13:46. | :13:52.
be running just two years from now. The passenger, quite rightly, will | :13:53. | :13:57.
say this is good news because we are going to see a better chance of | :13:58. | :14:02.
getting a seat, more capacity, more rolling stock and an infrastructure | :14:03. | :14:07.
being put in place which is now capable of delivering for the 21st | :14:08. | :14:10.
century. 100 stations will get free Wi`Fi. No mention though of what | :14:11. | :14:17.
passengers would prefer. That is free Wi`Fi on`board the trains. | :14:18. | :14:24.
Today's deal makes this the biggest train operator. A joint venture | :14:25. | :14:28.
between go ahead and part of the French state`owned railway. The | :14:29. | :14:32.
changeover starts in September. Here is a little context. This company | :14:33. | :14:38.
will carry 273 million passenger journeys a year. Nationwide that as | :14:39. | :14:42.
more people than at every airline at every airport, and every traveller | :14:43. | :14:48.
on every ferry combined. It is a big deal. | :14:49. | :14:59.
Two men have been charged today with keeping three people in slavery and | :15:00. | :15:03.
the car wash in Southampton. The group work kept as forced labour. | :15:04. | :15:09.
Emma Vardy is in our newsroom. At this stage, what do we know? Police | :15:10. | :15:18.
and immigration officers visited a car wash on Monday and they found | :15:19. | :15:22.
ten men, all from Romania, who they believe may have been the victim of | :15:23. | :15:25.
trafficking, exploitation and possible slavery. What modern`day | :15:26. | :15:31.
slavery actually means in reality is not so much that people are being | :15:32. | :15:35.
locked away, but that they may be being subjected to some form of | :15:36. | :15:39.
intimidation or macro control. The two men involved are both from | :15:40. | :15:47.
Southampton. They were charged with ten counts of slavery. How our | :15:48. | :15:52.
authorities being made aware of this? Trafficking and exploitation | :15:53. | :15:58.
is an issue authorities are increasingly taking seriously. | :15:59. | :16:01.
Police are being encouraged to spot the signs, perhaps were somebody is | :16:02. | :16:05.
allowed to legally live and work in this country but may be vulnerable | :16:06. | :16:09.
and the victim of exportation. The Government is also introducing new | :16:10. | :16:12.
measures to tackle modern`day slavery. There is a bill going | :16:13. | :16:17.
through Parliament. We have also had some other similar operations to | :16:18. | :16:22.
this in the south. In March, six men were rescued after a police raid on | :16:23. | :16:26.
a garage in Bournemouth, were men were living in a caravan on site. | :16:27. | :16:30.
Hampshire Police say there is something of a national picture | :16:31. | :16:33.
building up which shows that some car washes are linked with organised | :16:34. | :16:38.
crime. Police have urged people who use car washes to consider whether | :16:39. | :16:42.
they are above board. The ten men rescued from the car wash are being | :16:43. | :16:47.
supported and looked after. The two men charged with slavery will return | :16:48. | :16:52.
to court next month. Last night we reported on the | :16:53. | :16:55.
problems of first time buyers being forced out of the housing market. | :16:56. | :16:59.
Whether you are buying or renting, the South has some of the highest | :17:00. | :17:05.
living costs. That is having an impact on employers. We have been to | :17:06. | :17:08.
a school in North Hampshire looking to recruit teachers. This is | :17:09. | :17:16.
Avril's first teaching job. She can only afford to work here because she | :17:17. | :17:19.
has been able to move back in with her parents. The compromise I made | :17:20. | :17:26.
to get a good school was to move back home, unfortunately! It is not | :17:27. | :17:33.
ideal at my age. I make a 40 minute commute to work every day. Still | :17:34. | :17:41.
this junior school is struggling to find stuff. A few years ago it would | :17:42. | :17:44.
get as many as 20 applicants per vacancy. Now it is only getting one | :17:45. | :17:50.
or two. We have a few vacancies left to fail and it is a real difficulty. | :17:51. | :17:53.
We are very picky about the quality of the candidate we want. It is very | :17:54. | :17:59.
difficult for people to live here with the cost of housing. Last year | :18:00. | :18:04.
a recruitment crisis prompted pupils in Winchester to make this video in | :18:05. | :18:08.
an attempt to find a new headteacher. Westfield has resorted | :18:09. | :18:17.
to nationwide Twitter appeals. I have only just started looking for a | :18:18. | :18:21.
house. It is a bit more expensive than I had anticipated. I would love | :18:22. | :18:27.
to apply here. But looking cost wise of renting, trying to find somewhere | :18:28. | :18:31.
to live, the area is far too expensive. This school is not alone | :18:32. | :18:35.
in its struggle to attract the right candidates. There are 346 teaching | :18:36. | :18:42.
vacancies in state schools in Hampshire alone. | :18:43. | :18:49.
I'll disport, Lewis is here. Shall we talk cricket? All day it has been | :18:50. | :18:58.
torrential. Apparently now there is glorious sunshine. Shall we talk | :18:59. | :19:02.
Hampshire? They have started really well, haven't they? They had a great | :19:03. | :19:07.
win during the week against Leicestershire. They lost in the T | :19:08. | :19:11.
20. They have a great chance to finish it tonight. They are back to | :19:12. | :19:16.
the G20 blast competition against Sussex. The match begins at Hove at | :19:17. | :19:23.
seven o'clock. Sussex have won both of their opening games. Chris Wood | :19:24. | :19:30.
could be included for the first time this season after injury. | :19:31. | :19:35.
Meanwhile, Sussex cricketer Chris Jordan starred for England in their | :19:36. | :19:40.
one`day international wing over Sri Lanka. He smashed 38 runs of 14 | :19:41. | :19:46.
deliveries to help England reach 347`6. With the ball, he took three | :19:47. | :19:53.
wickets. England won by 81 runs. Staying with cricket, the England | :19:54. | :19:57.
and Wales Cricket board have referred the Guardian newspaper to | :19:58. | :19:59.
the Press Complaints Commission regarding an interview with | :20:00. | :20:04.
Hampshire batsmen Michael Carberry. In the interview, he claimed he had | :20:05. | :20:07.
been the victim of unfair treatment by the England managing. `` | :20:08. | :20:15.
Management. The board feels the tone of the article was on balance. Last | :20:16. | :20:20.
night, Keegan Bradley from the Isle of Wight won the PDC world youth | :20:21. | :20:24.
championship title in darts, in front of a sell`out crowd at the O2 | :20:25. | :20:31.
Arena. He came from 3`1 down to defeat his Austrian opponent. It | :20:32. | :20:36.
included a one to one finish on his way to the ?10,000 first prize. `` | :20:37. | :20:42.
121. When he was 3`1 ahead, I thought, Ho, no. You have practised | :20:43. | :20:56.
hard. He got back to 5`4. It should not have been a deciding leg. | :20:57. | :21:01.
Thankfully, touch wood, it has gone my way. It is great to see it means | :21:02. | :21:05.
so much to him. In golf at Wentworth, Justin Rose finish that | :21:06. | :21:12.
one over par. It leaves the U.S. Open champion at one under at the | :21:13. | :21:17.
halfway stage. Nine shots behind Thomas Bjorn. Rainey and Wentworth, | :21:18. | :21:29.
sunny and Hove. A mixed bag. We will have the weather in a moment. First | :21:30. | :21:33.
though, Sir Cecil Beaton was renowned for his fashion and | :21:34. | :21:41.
portrait photography, but also for having a number of notorious love | :21:42. | :21:44.
affairs. Now an exhibition containing most 200 Sotheby's | :21:45. | :21:49.
photographs has opened at the Salisbury Museum. Our reporter went | :21:50. | :21:58.
