Bedblocking continues to be one of the biggest healthcare problems

The number of people staying in the county's hospitals longer than they

need to is higher than virtually anywhere else in the country.

Now the County Council is dedicating more funding into

a scheme to tackle delays in getting patients moved on from hospital.

I asked our Political Reporter Helen Catt to explain how it would work.

It's to get people who are ready to leave hospital out and either back

in their own home with carers or into a care home within 72 hours.

And it does that by paying the care company an incentive.

The Council ran a trial of this which it said was successful.

It particularly wants to get more people placed at weekends though

so it's offering even more money, up to ?200 per person for Saturday

and Sundays. It's also opening it up to

care homes, all of that will cost roughly ?100,000 a year.

The council says getting people home quicker will save money

and benefit patients too. you know you are on the road to

recovery and in familiar surroundings. I see it as an

advantage. and benefit patients too.

What do care providers think of it? I spoke to an organisation

which represents care homes in Oxfordshire earlier

and they hadn't actually heard about this but there are four providers

quoted in the Council's report. They said this extra money could be

a good idea but the decision on whether or not to admit somebody

over the weekend would depend on safety.

Will this scheme solve the bed`blocking problem?

It's not a magic cure. Oxfordshire has been

the worst place in the country pretty much continuously

over the last couple of years. If we look at the latest published

figures for March there were 144 people in hospital unnecessarily.

Only half were there because of delays in setting up care and not

all of those would be going into council`funded placements anyway.

Others were waiting for more NHS treatment and 28 were actually

choosing to stay in hospital because they didn't want to take up

the options being offered to them. Motorists in Oxford are facing

months of disruption as a major transformation of the

road network is set to get started. A new hamburger style roundabout is

being built at Kennington, and the Hinksey Hill interchange

with also undergo development. A familiar sight for motorists

in Oxford. The south of the city often bearing

the brunt with six months of roadworks starting next Monday,

we are being told some small pain will bring big gains.

I am aware of the inconvenience there will be

in getting the work done. I am confident that by Christmas

time this year, the road network around here will be much improved.

What will it look like once it is finished?

A new carriageway for eastbound traffic will be cut

through the roundabout meaning a more direct route to the junction.

For those going westbound, the roundabout will be widened.

Meanwhile at the Hinckley Hill Interchange, there will be

a free flow slip road onto the A34 oremoving the need for motorists to

stop at the traffic lights. At a cost of ?6 million,

is it worth it? They will improve it for a month

or two and then it will get worse. They should be thinking

about how do we stop using cars. If they do it in summer, it will be

best for commuters because in autumn, everyone will drive to work.

By the time this project is finished,

10 million cars will have travelled through this area of Oxford.

It is set to increase their capacity by 30% and

the council hopes the network will be able to deal with the increasing

population of the county. The 70th anniversary of the

D`Day Landings is almost upon us. Among the thousands of troops that

He became the first allied servicemen to be

killed in action on D`Day. He led 25 platoon across the bridge.
