fresher Hello and welcome to South Today | :00:00. | :00:00.
from Oxford. Tonight: A teenage boy drowns in a river. His | :00:00. | :00:00.
friends are devastated. He'd been trying to retrieve a ball from this | :00:00. | :00:08.
stretch of the Thames. No one had a bad word to say about | :00:09. | :00:22.
him. He will be truly missed. Also tonight: the health and safety | :00:23. | :00:27.
mistakes that led the death of a construction worker ` the company | :00:28. | :00:31.
Costain is fined ?500,000. And later on: | :00:32. | :00:34.
Popping up everywhere ` Bracknell's tribute to those who | :00:35. | :00:36.
fought in the First World War. Good evening. A teenage boy has | :00:37. | :00:48.
drowned in the River Thames in Buckinghamshire after playing with | :00:49. | :00:50.
friends near the water. It's thought Kyrece Marshall`Francis was | :00:51. | :00:53.
retrieving a ball when he was swept into deep water. Police are warning | :00:54. | :00:55.
people to beware of going into rivers. Last year, 45 people were | :00:56. | :00:58.
killed from swimming or jumping into rivers, lakes and quarries. Adina | :00:59. | :01:01.
Campbell reports. A tragic start to their summer | :01:02. | :01:08.
holiday ` these friends today paying their respects to a boy described as | :01:09. | :01:12.
charming, friendly and sociable. Kyrece Marshall`Francis had only | :01:13. | :01:15.
been a pupil here at Great Marlow School for nine months. But | :01:16. | :01:19.
he'd made a wide circle of friends. I was one of the first to know. It | :01:20. | :01:39.
was such a shock to us. I have been closed to Kyrece. He was always | :01:40. | :01:47.
really nice. He was a fun loving guy, always smiling. I was | :01:48. | :01:54.
gobsmacked. One of my best friends has gone and I don't see him again. | :01:55. | :02:07.
One of Kyrece's friends then called the emergency services for help ` | :02:08. | :02:11.
his body was later found by local search rescue teams. | :02:12. | :02:19.
At this time of year as tempting as it may be, there are unseen hazard | :02:20. | :02:27.
in rivers, especially following floods this year. There is a lot of | :02:28. | :02:33.
dairy on the river. They can be dangerous places, unfortunately. | :02:34. | :02:35.
Earlier, those who knew Kyrece's went on a special group walk to the | :02:36. | :02:38.
area where he died. His school say the teenager's death has left the | :02:39. | :02:41.
A former headteacher who now lives in Oxford has denied a number of | :02:42. | :02:53.
sexual assaults on a school pupil forty years ago. David Tuohy is | :02:54. | :02:56.
accused of assaulting the boy who was a pupil at the old Eccles Hall | :02:57. | :02:59.
School in Norfolk in the mid`seventies when he was the | :03:00. | :03:01.
headmaster. It's alleged the attacks started when the boy was ten or | :03:02. | :03:04.
eleven years old. Mr Tuohy is expected to face a trial in | :03:05. | :03:07.
A new machine has hit the roads in Wiltshire. It's mission? To help | :03:08. | :03:17.
fill in some of the county's 5,000 potholes. It's called the Velocity | :03:18. | :03:19.
Patcher, and as the name suggests, it can patch up the holes at a much | :03:20. | :03:23.
higher speed than traditional methods. Will Glennon has the story. | :03:24. | :03:25.
If potholes are the problem, then how about this for a solution? | :03:26. | :03:28.
Velocity by name and by nature too. It makes swift work of holes and | :03:29. | :03:33.
cracks in the tarmac thanks to a high powered jet hose. It blasts the | :03:34. | :03:37.
rubbish out then blasts in the mix of chippings and tarmac to make the | :03:38. | :03:41.
repair. It's fast, efficient and it's cheaper too. While an average | :03:42. | :03:46.
pothole repair costs up to ?55, a velocity repair is a third of that | :03:47. | :03:50.
at just ?18. The road doesn't need to be closed as the machine is | :03:51. | :03:58.
mobile and repairs which are ready straight away are actually designed | :03:59. | :04:02.
It is capable of taking 40 tonne lorries within seconds of being | :04:03. | :04:23.
late. I am able to lean on it here today. | :04:24. | :04:23.
The Velocity isn't the complete solution though. It's only designed | :04:24. | :04:27.
for rural roads.Main roads like A and B roads need different types of | :04:28. | :04:30.
repair. And at the moment this machine is still on trial. | :04:31. | :04:38.
our job is to repair them as quickly our job is to repair them as quickly | :04:39. | :04:46.
as we can and this gives us the tool in our armoury so we can wage war | :04:47. | :04:50.
against them. This is the first year of using them. We will evaluate the | :04:51. | :04:54.
impact after a few weeks. It is looking good so far. | :04:55. | :04:55.
Wiltshire has over 2,700 miles of roads. The cost to completely | :04:56. | :04:59.
resurface them would run into the hundreds of millions. But with | :05:00. | :05:01.
systems like the Velocity ` the council at least hopes to stay on | :05:02. | :05:04.
top of pothole repairs and keep road users moving safely on. | :05:05. | :05:15.
People in Banbury are being offered cheaper rent if they do some of the | :05:16. | :05:18.
work to renovate derelict houses. These four storey properties on | :05:19. | :05:21.
Broughton Road had been empty for several years. But the housing | :05:22. | :05:23.
project run by Cherwell District Council ` has led to their | :05:24. | :05:26.
refurbishment. The scheme is part of their wider plans to provide more | :05:27. | :05:29.
It gives people a chance who cannot afford to go into private, so it is | :05:30. | :05:48.
a good way of supplying houses for our residents. I am on low`wage, so | :05:49. | :05:55.
this is good for me. We are very happy. | :05:56. | :06:02.
The developer Costain has been fined more than ?500,000 after the death | :06:03. | :06:05.
of a man from Oxfordshire on one of its building sites. Mark Williams | :06:06. | :06:08.
from Nuneham Courtenay was crushed by a forklift truck which fell on | :06:09. | :06:11.
him three years ago. Earlier this year, Costain, was found guilty of | :06:12. | :06:14.
breaching health and safety regulations. Charlotte Stacey | :06:15. | :06:16.
Last Sunday, family and friends gathered to remember Mark Williams | :06:17. | :06:25.
on the third anniversary of his death. This morning, after a lengthy | :06:26. | :06:30.
trial, the developer of the site he had been working on when he died | :06:31. | :06:35.
were found ?500,000 for health and safety breaches. I just hope it does | :06:36. | :06:44.
not happen to anyone else. The fine to me is irrelevant, really. Because | :06:45. | :06:49.
Mark will never walk through the door again. It is as simple as that. | :06:50. | :06:58.
Mark had been working on the site at this shopping centre in Newbury. In | :06:59. | :07:04.
sentencing today, the judge described Mark Williams as a loving | :07:05. | :07:08.
son, partner and father to two children. He said Costain fell short | :07:09. | :07:12.
of its obligations and that lessons have not been learned from two | :07:13. | :07:17.
previous incidents in the company had been warned about lifting | :07:18. | :07:20.
equipment. She said the amount not reflect the value of Mark | :07:21. | :07:24.
Williams's life, but rather reflected the breaches in health and | :07:25. | :07:30.
safety. We asked the company for a statement but they refused to | :07:31. | :07:32.
comment. We would hope that as the | :07:33. | :07:37.
construction industry continues to improve, that contractors realise | :07:38. | :07:48.
they must manage the risks that go alongside that this hopefully | :07:49. | :07:51.
reinforces that message. The family will not receive any of the money, | :07:52. | :07:57.
it will go to the Treasury. They see that they intend to claim for | :07:58. | :08:03.
compensation for his doctors. `` his daughters. | :08:04. | :08:07.
It was one of the most significant archaeological discoveries of the | :08:08. | :08:10.
20th century ` the excavation of the tomb of Tutankhamun. Now a new | :08:11. | :08:13.
exhibition with previously unseen artefacts has opened at Oxford's | :08:14. | :08:15.
Ashmolean museum. It charts the search for the hidden tomb and the | :08:16. | :08:24.
It's 1922, in the Valley of the Kings near Luxor in Egypt. After 16 | :08:25. | :08:27.
'tutmania' that followed. Katharine Da Costa reports. | :08:28. | :08:30.
It's 1922, in the Valley of the Kings near Luxor in Egypt. After 16 | :08:31. | :08:33.
years of extensive excavation work, Lord Carnarvon and archaeologist | :08:34. | :08:35.
Howard Carter's persistence pays off ` they've just discovered the | :08:36. | :08:37.
undisturbed tomb of the boy king ` Tutankhamun. | :08:38. | :08:45.
When they found the rock steps down to the tomb, they discovered | :08:46. | :08:51.
something that had lain untouched for such a long time and it was a | :08:52. | :08:53.
wind`up great significance. Soon photographs of the tomb and its | :08:54. | :08:55.
spectacular contents appeared around the world. Some of those objects | :08:56. | :08:57.
have been brought together in the Ashmolean's exhibition in Oxford ` | :08:58. | :09:00.
including Harry Burton's iconic photographs and Carter's | :09:01. | :09:02.
hand`written diaries. Their discovery caused a sensation | :09:03. | :09:04.
throughout the 1920s, it became known as Tutmania ` there was even a | :09:05. | :09:06.
dance named after him ` the It is wonderful that the museum has | :09:07. | :09:26.
become this exhibition to explain the background of people involved, | :09:27. | :09:30.
my great`grandfather and how it impacted on the world, in fashion, | :09:31. | :09:33.
art and design. The tale of Tutankhamun and the | :09:34. | :09:34.
mystery surrounding his death continues to fascinate both the | :09:35. | :09:38.
public and scholars alike. I'll be here again at around 11:30 ` | :09:39. | :09:43.
later because of the Commonwealth Games opening ceremony. Now more of | :09:44. | :09:46.
today's stories with Sally Taylor. It's hoped | :09:47. | :10:01.
the school will open to year seven Still to come | :10:02. | :10:03.
in this evening's South Today: Let the Games begin ` | :10:04. | :10:06.
the region's athletes get ready for a mouth`watering | :10:07. | :10:08.

Mars bars yet! Bournemouth Council has joined | :10:20. | :10:24.
the chorus of disapproval for It says that if the proposals are | :10:25. | :10:26.
approved, hundreds of thousands of potential visitors will be put | :10:27. | :10:32.
off travelling to the town. The plans are currently being | :10:33. | :10:37.
considered for approval They've received 2,700 interested | :10:38. | :10:39.
representations ` the highest ever But just last week plans for the | :10:40. | :10:44.
Rampion wind farm off the Sussex coast ` one of the world's largest ` | :10:45. | :10:51.
were approved with little objection. It was the power | :10:52. | :10:54.
of the sun that attracted people to Bournemouth today, the council wants | :10:55. | :11:03.
to keep it that way. Today, | :11:04. | :11:07.
the cabinet opposed a plan for 194 They say it would devastate the | :11:08. | :11:09.
tourism economy driving away tens of millions of pounds of holiday | :11:10. | :11:16.
spending making businesses bankrupt. It would be a novelty | :11:17. | :11:23.
at first to see it but it isn't I come here because it is a tranquil | :11:24. | :11:29.
area and I hope it stays that way. Some people say it would spoil | :11:30. | :11:42.
the view. Would it put you off? The government gave | :11:43. | :11:45.
the go`ahead to Rampion wind farm, Why does Bournemouth think it | :11:46. | :11:52.
should be treated differently? Brighton and Hove council did not | :11:53. | :12:01.
oppose Rampion because the offer they had to the tourists | :12:02. | :12:05.
is different to what we have here. We have an area | :12:06. | :12:10.
of outstanding natural beauty, we have the only world Heritage | :12:11. | :12:12.
site around the corner, that is why people come here cover the beauty | :12:13. | :12:15.
of the natural environment. People perceive change, | :12:16. | :12:21.
but the reality is different. A case in point is the neighbouring | :12:22. | :12:25.
authority on the Isle of Wight say we are underplaying | :12:26. | :12:27.
the benefits of wind farms. You can see how different regions | :12:28. | :12:34.
and communities are different. Some environmentalists think | :12:35. | :12:40.
the offshore wind farms will be more We believe the impact | :12:41. | :12:42.
of climate change will ever greater negative effect | :12:43. | :12:49.
on Dorset coast this offshore wind farms it has been proven and we have | :12:50. | :12:53.
had erosion and rising sea levels. The decision by Bournemouth council | :12:54. | :12:59.
isn't the end of the matter. The final decision will be taken | :13:00. | :13:02.
by the Secretary of State Keeping up to date with | :13:03. | :13:05.
the latest headlines, being able to post pictures instantly online ` | :13:06. | :13:19.
all with a mobile phone. A new study says half | :13:20. | :13:23.
of us access the internet that way. But it's not so easy if you live | :13:24. | :13:27.
in the countryside. While work's under way to improve | :13:28. | :13:30.
signals in rural areas ` Vodafone has begun its own trials ` | :13:31. | :13:32.
starting in a Dorset village. In the heart or rural Dorset there's | :13:33. | :13:39.
one sound you don't expect to hear. Cranbourne has never had a | :13:40. | :13:45.
mobile phone signal. It's basically affected my bottom | :13:46. | :14:09.
line where people would choose someone else to stay because I | :14:10. | :14:14.
didn't have a mobile signal. Now, we can promise we have a mobile signal | :14:15. | :14:18.
for Vodafone users for the guests that stay here and as we No, more | :14:19. | :14:25.
and more, people do not like to be out of touch with their loved ones | :14:26. | :14:27.
and friends and colleagues. Cranbourne lies in an area | :14:28. | :14:29.
of outstanding natural beauty The signal comes | :14:30. | :14:32.
from a transmitter that's connected The boxes are part of a new trial, | :14:33. | :14:47.
they work just like a big Wi`Fi box in your home. They turn whole | :14:48. | :14:51.
villages from no spots into hotspots. | :14:52. | :14:53.
The trial is part of a 1 billion pound network upgrade | :14:54. | :14:56.
Cranbourne is one of 12 rural areas testing a scheme | :14:57. | :14:59.
that could bring phone signal to 10,000 people. | :15:00. | :15:01.
Not suitable for everywhere. 10% will not have broadband at all. | :15:02. | :15:08.
This is not suitable for those places but for those that do and | :15:09. | :15:11.
are on Vodafone this is a good really good | :15:12. | :15:14.
If successful the 3G system will stay in place. | :15:15. | :15:24.
So the old village phone box may well be worried ` | :15:25. | :15:27.
On to the sport. Chris is here. Just over an hour to go. 8pm it kicks | :15:28. | :15:54.
off, Commonwealth Games. We have been meeting many of the | :15:55. | :15:55.
personalities. Over the last few weeks we've been | :15:56. | :15:57.
meeting some of the sporting personalities | :15:58. | :15:59.

of the village is the dining hall. Around 4,500 athletes | :17:00. | :17:07.

and makes them happen. Additionally, she is raising money | :20:54. | :20:56.
for charity which is extraordinary. The first day | :20:57. | :21:01.
of the challenge is to sail from Cowes to Poole with longer daily | :21:02. | :21:03.
stretches more than 60 miles each. Spending 12 hours | :21:04. | :21:09.
on the water is tough. I have followed her progress | :21:10. | :21:13.
for over two years. A lot of planning, preparation, | :21:14. | :21:21.
a lot of work. A tremendous young woman. Good luck, | :21:22. | :21:29.
Natasha. Giant poppies have been springing up | :21:30. | :21:50.
across Bracknell They're the work | :21:51. | :21:52.
of a local business, and they're being made to mark the centenary | :21:53. | :21:55.
of the outbreak of World War I. The town decided that | :21:56. | :21:58.
as their tribute to those who fell, they couldn't better what's been | :21:59. | :22:01.
a symbol of remembrance almost At six feet tall, this is larger | :22:02. | :22:03.
than the poppy worn by generations but the design is identical to the | :22:04. | :22:14.
current version of the flower first chosen as a symbol of remembrance | :22:15. | :22:19.
in the wake of the Great War. An alternative to the jingoistic | :22:20. | :22:24.
emblems that rallied a generation to the flag and led them to the death | :22:25. | :22:28.
and destruction of the trenches. It is a symbol of remembrance | :22:29. | :22:33.
and hope. The poppies were growing | :22:34. | :22:36.
on the battlefield so such destruction and something | :22:37. | :22:39.
beautiful was growing and it was unexpected and that is something we | :22:40. | :22:43.
focus on, the hope things will 25 poppies are going up in prominent | :22:44. | :22:47.
positions around Bracknell. Many on roundabouts or overlooking | :22:48. | :22:58.
a major junction. Everyone uses cars | :22:59. | :23:04.
so everybody goes around the roundabout and will see the | :23:05. | :23:08.
poppy so the message has got home. The poppies have been made by this | :23:09. | :23:15.
local firm ` more used to making models to help firms visualise new | :23:16. | :23:18.
products, this is one design that This one has been | :23:19. | :23:21.
an iconic symbol for a long time so I suppose it is down to us to | :23:22. | :23:29.
recreate it as well as we can. I live in the local area | :23:30. | :23:34.
so I will see them every day! All of the poppies should be in | :23:35. | :23:39.
place for the centenary next month. They will not come down again | :23:40. | :23:58.
until November, the annual And to let you know we have a | :23:59. | :24:16.
special programme planned for August the 4th which is the 100 years to | :24:17. | :24:23.

rising nicely, humid and dry tonight, very like recent nights, | :25:19. | :25:22.

dry weather across the board and becoming dry everywhere through the | :25:27. | :25:34.

dry and settled thanks to high pressure into the weekend and next | :26:27. | :26:30.
week. We expect settled weather because of high pressure, tomorrow | :26:31. | :26:37.
we could top 28 or 30 Celsius in some parts. A dry day on Friday, 12 | :26:38. | :26:43.
showers for eastern areas, most places escape and the showers are | :26:44. | :26:48.
hit miss. Most places stay dry. Sunday, the risk of showers, for | :26:49. | :26:56.
eastern areas, the West is best in terms of dryness and sunshine. | :26:57. | :27:00.
