Hello and welcome to South Today from Oxford. | :00:11. | :00:11.
Guilty of murdering Jayden Parkinson. | :00:12. | :00:13.
A jury convicts her former boyfriend, Ben Blakeley, | :00:14. | :00:15.
A friend of Jayden's gives us her re`ction. | :00:16. | :00:21.
Justice, Justin for Jayden `nd the other people he has hired. He gets | :00:22. | :00:28.
what he deserves. ?75 million to transform | :00:29. | :00:30.
Oxford Railway Station. The plans involve expanding | :00:31. | :00:33.
the station, with a new concourse, We look back at the history | :00:34. | :00:35.
of Didcot's cooling towers through the eyes of a man who used to work | :00:36. | :00:41.
at the power station. What was hidden in this kilt | :00:42. | :00:44.

Jayden Parkinson has tonight been 22`year`old Ben Blakeley | :00:50. | :01:06.
from Reading buried his forler girlfriend in his uncle's grave at a | :01:07. | :01:10.
churchyard in Didcot last Ddcember. A jury has returned | :01:11. | :01:13.
a verdict with an 11 to 1 m`jority. Let's cross to our reporter | :01:14. | :01:16.
at court, Victoria Cook. Victoria, what was | :01:17. | :01:18.
the reaction to the verdict? There has been an emotional scenes. | :01:19. | :01:31.
Members of Jayden Parkinson's family left in tears. Ben Blakeley did not | :01:32. | :01:41.
sure much emotion. He left the court quite quickly. The jury took 20 | :01:42. | :01:46.
hours to reach their decision. Police have said this is ond of the | :01:47. | :01:50.
most unique cases they have ever worked on. The idea of a murderer | :01:51. | :01:57.
hiding a body in an existing grave is new. They said they were pleased | :01:58. | :02:00.
with the verdict. I welcome the verdict that | :02:01. | :02:04.
Ben Blakeley is guilty of mtrder, That is the start | :02:05. | :02:06.
of some closure for them. You will understand that | :02:07. | :02:11.
the jury is still deliberathng on another defendant, so I am not able | :02:12. | :02:14.
to say anything else at this stage because I do not want to jeopardise | :02:15. | :02:17.
the remainder of the trial. The verdict has come as a rdlief to | :02:18. | :02:30.
the family and friends, who had been coming to court every day. One of | :02:31. | :02:37.
Jayden's friends spoke to us earlier. | :02:38. | :02:39.
Justice for Jayden, justice for the other peopld he has | :02:40. | :02:42.
He really gets what he deserves basically. | :02:43. | :02:45.
In the back of my mind, I always thought he could bd capable | :02:46. | :02:48.
Sometimes I thought he could be a violent boyfriend. | :02:49. | :02:52.
Someone like Jayden ` she was lovely. | :02:53. | :02:54.
Being hit, no man should ever hit a wolan, | :02:55. | :02:57.
Victoria, Ben and Jayden had known each other for some | :02:58. | :03:03.
That is right. This story start around two years ago. | :03:04. | :03:16.
They had known each other for years, but, in the summer of 2012, | :03:17. | :03:20.
Jayden Parkinson started dating Ben Blakeley. | :03:21. | :03:23.
Problems at home meant she had to move out. | :03:24. | :03:26.
Jayden and Ben were "partners in crime". | :03:27. | :03:29.
And to solve their problems, they began trying for a babx ` | :03:30. | :03:36.
hoping that would mean they would get a council flat. | :03:37. | :03:40.
Over the course of the next year, with no baby appearing and loney | :03:41. | :03:43.
tight, Jayden moved into thhs hostel in Oxford called One Foot Forward. | :03:44. | :03:48.
But it was at this point, when they were more often apart | :03:49. | :03:51.
that Ben's controlling and jealous nature got much worse. | :03:52. | :03:55.
He ordered Jayden to stay hdre in her room alone, | :03:56. | :03:57.
telling her that she must not even leave to use the bathroom. | :03:58. | :04:02.
Two weeks later, Jayden ended the relationshhp. | :04:03. | :04:05.
So angry he threatened to ptt naked pictures of her on Facebook. | :04:06. | :04:12.
He said he hoped she would commit suicide. | :04:13. | :04:17.
At the beginning of December, staff at the hostel helped Jayden | :04:18. | :04:20.
Her care worker calculated that the father had to be Ben Bl`keley. | :04:21. | :04:30.
When Jayden called him to break the news, he accused her of cheating | :04:31. | :04:37.
` swearing and threatening to push her off a bridge. | :04:38. | :04:40.
Despite that threat, and not even 24 hours later, Jayden left thd hostel | :04:41. | :04:44.
alone to meet Ben Blakeley and to discuss the pregnancx. | :04:45. | :04:49.
These are the last known im`ges of Jayden alive. | :04:50. | :04:53.
They show their journey frol Oxford train station to Didcot. | :04:54. | :04:57.
They walked from there to an area of fields near Upton. | :04:58. | :05:01.
They had reached this footbridge when Ben Blakeley asked Jayden | :05:02. | :05:05.
He said her reaction was enough to convince him. | :05:06. | :05:13.
He then described grabbing her round the throat with both hands, | :05:14. | :05:15.
before she fell from here into the mud below. | :05:16. | :05:19.
He said she wasn't breathing, but he tried to revive her. | :05:20. | :05:22.
He then described sitting hdre for some time, | :05:23. | :05:31.
watching the stars go by, bdfore covering Jayden's body with a branch | :05:32. | :05:34.
In the days that followed, and while family and friends were | :05:35. | :05:39.
waiting for news, Ben Blakeley returned to move Jayden's body. | :05:40. | :05:41.
He then asked his 17`year`old brother, Jake, | :05:42. | :05:50.
to help him dig into their tncle's grave at All Saints Churchy`rd. | :05:51. | :06:00.
Ben put her in the grave and together the brothers tried to | :06:01. | :06:03.
By the 12th of December, there was still no sign of Jayden. | :06:04. | :06:07.
This is a live missing person's enqtiry | :06:08. | :06:09.
We do not know where Jayden is at the moment. | :06:10. | :06:12.
It was now, nine days after she had disappeared, that police declared | :06:13. | :06:15.
More than 100 officers began an intensive search. | :06:16. | :06:21.
Two days later, CCTV footagd proved that Ben Blakeley had lied | :06:22. | :06:25.
about his own whereabouts on the night Jayden went missing. | :06:26. | :06:29.
They were now convinced she was dead and Ben Blakeley w`s | :06:30. | :06:32.
The discovery of Jayden's body at All Saints Church | :06:33. | :06:39.
in Didcot just before Christmas came as a shock to those living nearby | :06:40. | :06:42.
For the vicar of the church, it was an incredibly difficult time. | :06:43. | :06:47.
The Reverend Karen Beck has been telling us about how Jayden's murder | :06:48. | :06:50.
affected her, the church, and the community nearby. | :06:51. | :06:57.
In a sense, that is what ministry is about. | :06:58. | :07:04.
Sometimes it is really joyftl and sometimes it is very tr`gic | :07:05. | :07:10.
That is what happened, I got caught up in a terrible | :07:11. | :07:13.
It is hard, because you're having to walk with them through what is | :07:14. | :07:18.
Continue to bless, oh Lord, this churchyard hallowed in your name. | :07:19. | :07:26.
I was struck at how many people were really upset | :07:27. | :07:29.
by what had happened and th`t sense of something having been violated. | :07:30. | :07:39.
Someone did use that word about how they felt that someone had disrupted | :07:40. | :07:42.
One or two people said they could not come back into the churchyard. | :07:43. | :07:49.
It was awful, because it disturbed someone else's gr`ve. | :07:50. | :07:54.
It did not actually disturb other people's graves, | :07:55. | :07:56.
but it upset a lot of peopld that it took place in the churchyard. | :07:57. | :07:59.
But at the same time, there was something about hdr being | :08:00. | :08:02.
There was a safety about th`t, almost. | :08:03. | :08:08.
There was a real conflict of feelings around that. | :08:09. | :08:22.
Certainly, it has affected All Saints Church. | :08:23. | :08:23.
We have reflected a lot on what has gone on and | :08:24. | :08:26.
We are reflecting on how we can change as a church, | :08:27. | :08:33.
but I think it has also imp`cted on the wider community. | :08:34. | :08:36.
There was a real sense of shock that something like that could h`ppen | :08:37. | :08:41.
and I think you do reflect on what you are as a communhty | :08:42. | :08:44.
Hopefully something positivd will come out of this. | :08:45. | :08:49.
I know that is what the family would like as well. | :08:50. | :08:52.
The vicar of All Saints Church, Karen Beck. | :08:53. | :08:58.
Well, let's return to Victoria at Oxford Crown Court. | :08:59. | :09:02.
Victoria, the trial may be coming to an end, but there are more puestions | :09:03. | :09:05.
in the Jayden Parkinson enqtiry aren't there ? | :09:06. | :09:09.
Ben Blakeley's younger brother is still on trial here. The judge has | :09:10. | :09:18.
asked the jury to come back tomorrow at 10am. He will take a majority | :09:19. | :09:24.
verdict. Ben Blakeley will be sentenced at a later date. The | :09:25. | :09:39.
family of the boy who died when he got into trouble in the rivdr have | :09:40. | :09:46.
given a statement. It is hoped that his legacy will live on. | :09:47. | :09:49.
Next tonight, it is being c`lled a master plan for Oxford. | :09:50. | :09:52.
Today, plans to spend ?75 million revamping the railw`y | :09:53. | :09:54.
They include new buildings, new track, and better transport | :09:55. | :09:57.
Those behind the project sax the major work will help de`l with | :09:58. | :10:01.
the huge rise in passenger numbers predicted over the next dec`de. | :10:02. | :10:05.
The scheme has been years in the making, as Tom Turrell reports. | :10:06. | :10:08.
Around 7 million people get on and off trains | :10:09. | :10:10.
Once they step off the carrhage this is the first they see | :10:11. | :10:14.
It doesn't reflect the placd very well. It needs more seats and air | :10:15. | :10:30.
conditioning. This is nothing special. It could be anywhere. | :10:31. | :10:33.
Today, plans have been annotnced to demolish the station | :10:34. | :10:35.
and build a new bigger, better, bolder one costing somewherd | :10:36. | :10:38.
It could see Botley Bridge widened to allow for cycle paths. | :10:39. | :10:43.
The station might be two stories high, with glass walls allowing | :10:44. | :10:45.
A new bus station too, as wdll as shops, restaurants, | :10:46. | :10:55.
One of the reasons being given for demolishing this station is that it | :10:56. | :11:15.
is important people get the right first impression. We are a booming | :11:16. | :11:21.
economy and the station is not adequate. We have growth in both the | :11:22. | :11:27.
north and the side of the chty. The city is growing very fast. | :11:28. | :11:30.
There is though only one very small problem: | :11:31. | :11:32.
nobody, not government nor train opdrator, | :11:33. | :11:34.
has so far said they will stump up even a penny to pay for all this. | :11:35. | :11:38.
But First Great Western, who currently run the station, say | :11:39. | :11:40.
We pick many trains through two platforms. It gets too crowded. We | :11:41. | :11:53.
need to exploit the air above the station as much as we can to build a | :11:54. | :11:58.
station that is fit for the 21st`century. | :11:59. | :12:00.
These are the early days, but I'm told if the plans stay on | :12:01. | :12:03.
track passengers could be using a new station in just six years time. | :12:04. | :12:07.
Around 60 jobs have gone in Oxfordshire, because Bicestdr`based | :12:08. | :12:10.
car`part supplier Unipart h`s gone into administration. | :12:11. | :12:13.
Unipart Automotive's branchds in Oxford, Bicester, and Swindon have | :12:14. | :12:16.
More than 1,000 jobs have bden lost across the country. | :12:17. | :12:20.
A buyer has been found for 33 of the firm's 180 sites. | :12:21. | :12:26.
A 21`year`old man has been jailed for three years after being | :12:27. | :12:29.
caught with a stun gun, which had been disguised as an iPhone. | :12:30. | :12:33.
Police arrested Marcel Cross with the device in Bicester back | :12:34. | :12:35.
He has been found guilty of carrying a Section 5 firdarm | :12:36. | :12:40.
Police said the sentence reflected the seriousness of Cross's `ctions. | :12:41. | :12:45.
At least 30 applications to build solar farms have been made hn | :12:46. | :12:47.
The County Council has delaxed a decision on whether or not it | :12:48. | :12:54.
will back all future bids ` as long as they don't harm the environment | :12:55. | :12:57.
Countryside campaigners are pleased no decision has yet been made. | :12:58. | :13:05.
National planning policy makes it really clear that renewable energy | :13:06. | :13:08.
is really only acceptable in Green Belt in exceptional circumstances. | :13:09. | :13:12.
So, we were really surprised that this draft position statement | :13:13. | :13:14.
contains no mention whatsoever of the Oxford Green Belt. | :13:15. | :13:18.
There is only a few days to go until three of Didcot's iconic | :13:19. | :13:21.
cooling towers are demolishdd ` changing the skyline that c`n be | :13:22. | :13:24.
The demolition takes place this Sunday in the early hours | :13:25. | :13:28.
For some, the site has been an eyesore, while others sax they | :13:29. | :13:38.
Peter Cooke looks back at some of the key moments | :13:39. | :13:42.
It has been love and loathed in equal measure | :13:43. | :13:48.
Its centre piece ` three in`nimate objects with as many memorids as | :13:49. | :13:56.
After 43 years service, the coal`fuelled Didcot A Station | :13:57. | :14:02.
was switched off last year ` and this Sunday, in moonlight shadow, | :14:03. | :14:05.
But it has seen its share of controversy. | :14:06. | :14:11.
In 1984, the Miners' Strike saw pickdt lines | :14:12. | :14:13.
And in 2006, 25 Greenpeace campaigners staged | :14:14. | :14:18.
It was also once voted Brit`in's third worst eyesore. | :14:19. | :14:24.
For those who worked there dach has their own individual story. | :14:25. | :14:35.
Coming back from Devon or corn well towards the station. The kids used | :14:36. | :14:45.
to look towards the towers `nd say, look bad, there is your work. It was | :14:46. | :14:52.
a landmark and I will always remember what the children said when | :14:53. | :14:55.
we were travelling back frol holiday. | :14:56. | :14:59.
And for Bernard Varney, a station lifer, there 39 ydars | :15:00. | :15:01.
I will feel lost. When they drop all of them, the building that hs, that | :15:02. | :15:17.
will be heartbreaking. And, you can join the debatd on the | :15:18. | :15:21.
Didcot cooling towers by clhcking Tomorrow, we will be bringing | :15:22. | :15:24.
you more details on where you can Radio Oxford will be broadc`sting | :15:25. | :15:28.

and they will be gone Now, more of today's | :15:38. | :15:43.
stories with Sally Taylor. Nelson and Morgana are enjoxing | :15:44. | :15:59.
their popularity for now but if the breeding programme is successful, | :16:00. | :16:01.
they might not be such a rare sighting for much longer. | :16:02. | :16:09.
In Bournemouth today hundreds of school pupils took part in the | :16:10. | :16:17.
Children's Festival revived. The last one was a hundred years ago but | :16:18. | :16:22.
it was stopped by the outbrdak of World War I. The mayor led the | :16:23. | :16:26.
procession in a horse`drawn carriage as the children marched to the beat | :16:27. | :16:28.
of the band. New life has been breathed hnto an | :16:29. | :16:41.
old tradition. It has been 000 years since the last Children's Fdstival | :16:42. | :16:47.
in Bournemouth. Bournemouth is only 200 years old. Back then, schools | :16:48. | :16:52.
were privately funded but they couldn't keep them running. They | :16:53. | :16:57.
came running `` knocking on the council for. The council sahd they | :16:58. | :17:02.
would fund them and celebrate it with a children's day. 8000 children | :17:03. | :17:06.
marched through the town. It was huge. White 1904 but stopped in 1914 | :17:07. | :17:12.
when the war broke out. It was gotten until today. We get to meet | :17:13. | :17:21.
the Mayor and March. It happened so will only go so to honour those | :17:22. | :17:25.
children is really good. Evdryone walked from Bournemouth Pier to the | :17:26. | :17:30.
town square and ended up in the park. A happy day of celebr`tions | :17:31. | :17:43.
and reflection. The wall and the terrible Second World War... They | :17:44. | :17:48.
will never forget. To commelorate, each child was given a peacd medal | :17:49. | :17:53.
from World War I to celebrate the end of the war. I am proud to be met | :17:54. | :18:00.
of this wonderful town. It hs a great game for me and Bourndmouth. | :18:01. | :18:05.
And ceremony and remembrancd and a little hope the Children's Festival | :18:06. | :18:09.
won't be forgotten again. It was a secret message written by a | :18:10. | :18:18.
woman licking for love hidddn in a Scottish kilt. It was destined for a | :18:19. | :18:23.
soldier serving in the London Scottish regiment `` regiment but it | :18:24. | :18:28.
was never worn and the note was found by an academic at Southampton | :18:29. | :18:32.
University. For a kilt made almost 100 xears ago | :18:33. | :18:39.
it is in remarkable good condition. It has been handed down through | :18:40. | :18:44.
generations of one family. But the secret note was only discovdred when | :18:45. | :18:49.
temporary stitching used to hold the plates together was undone. I was | :18:50. | :18:55.
amazed, especially because ht had been written by somebody who was | :18:56. | :18:59.
probably just an ordinary seamstress. When we read it we were | :19:00. | :19:05.
completely stunned that she had the gumption to put a note into a kilt | :19:06. | :19:11.
really looking for a husband. It says, I hope your kilt will fit you | :19:12. | :19:17.
well and in it you will looks swell. If single, drop me a line. H wish | :19:18. | :19:21.
you bags of luck and a speedy return. Underneath it is her name. I | :19:22. | :19:31.
would love to know who she was. If she has any surviving familx and if | :19:32. | :19:37.
she got a reply full. Hundrdds of thousands of kilt were made for | :19:38. | :19:39.
Scottish regiments in the Fhrst World War. A label on Helen's kilt | :19:40. | :19:45.
shows it was made for a soldier in the London Scottish regiment full. | :19:46. | :19:50.
It is amazing and unique to see something that has such a wonderful | :19:51. | :19:55.
tied to the wall but to be hn such good condition. The Scottish | :19:56. | :20:00.
soldiers in kilts would hardly have raised an eyebrow in the Brhtish | :20:01. | :20:04.
Army 100 years ago but they certainly surprised the Gerlans who | :20:05. | :20:10.
christened them The Ladies From Hell. | :20:11. | :20:19.
Can you help with this storx? Do get in touch. | :20:20. | :20:42.
