Hello and welcome to South Today from Oxford. | :00:00. | :00:00.
Ben Blakely is told he'll serve at last 20 years | :00:07. | :00:12.
for murdering his pregnant ex`girlfriend, Jayden Parkinson. | :00:13. | :00:14.
We will never get to see her grow up, get married and have children. | :00:15. | :00:27.
This is our life sentence, it is time for him to start his. | :00:28. | :00:30.
A mother of four is sent to prison for her part in an arson | :00:31. | :00:33.
Fiaz Munchi has been sentenced to 13 years for manslaughter. | :00:34. | :00:37.
Will crowds see something similar on Sunday? | :00:38. | :00:39.
We'll tell you where you can and can't go to watch Didcot's | :00:40. | :00:42.
The ban on wartime bathing, 70 years today, holiday`makers celebrated the | :00:43. | :00:54.
end of the ban in Bournemouth. Police have described it as | :00:55. | :01:06.
"one of the most disturbing cases in This afternoon, Ben Blakely, | :01:07. | :01:10.
the man found guilty of murdering Jayden Parkingson, | :01:11. | :01:12.
has been given a life sentence. He's been told he'll spend | :01:13. | :01:15.
at least 20 years in prison. Blakeley killed Jayden, | :01:16. | :01:17.
who was pregnant, last December, and buried her body | :01:18. | :01:19.
in his uncle's grave in Didcot. Today, a jury failed to reach | :01:20. | :01:21.
a verdict on Ben's younger brother Jake who faced a charge | :01:22. | :01:24.
of unlawfully burying a body. Victoria Cook is at | :01:25. | :01:27.
Oxford Crown Court. Victoria, | :01:28. | :01:31.
what's the reaction been there? An incredibly difficult afternoon | :01:32. | :01:42.
for the family and friends of Jayden Parkinson. The judge passed his | :01:43. | :01:48.
sentence. There were sounds of crying across the court room as he | :01:49. | :01:55.
said, passing the sentence, saying Ben Blakely had created a web of | :01:56. | :01:59.
lies to the police and it would require a heart of stone to keep up | :02:00. | :02:03.
that pretence and to deal with the body in the way you did. Outside | :02:04. | :02:08.
court, the family bed at a statement saying they were pleased they had | :02:09. | :02:12.
seen justice. They wanted to thank people from Didcot and around the | :02:13. | :02:15.
world for their support for the family. | :02:16. | :02:20.
For this, we will always be grateful from the bottom of our hearts. We | :02:21. | :02:27.
found strength from the messages of support from strangers worldwide. We | :02:28. | :02:36.
will never be able to thank them. Or to forgive Ben Blakely for the evil | :02:37. | :02:47.
that murdered Jayden and concealed her body with such a cold, | :02:48. | :02:52.
calculated and callous manner. We will never get to see her grow up, | :02:53. | :02:57.
get married and have children. This is our life sentence, it is time for | :02:58. | :03:05.
Ben Blakely to start his. There are two unique features. The | :03:06. | :03:08.
first is we charged someone with murder before we found the body, | :03:09. | :03:14.
which is always going to make the situation more complicated. | :03:15. | :03:17.
The second unique feature which was not overlooked by the judge is he | :03:18. | :03:23.
buried her in a pre`existing grave, and we are satisfied that has not | :03:24. | :03:28.
ever happened in the UK before. This afternoon, the judge also | :03:29. | :03:33.
commented on the domestic abuse element, and said to Ben Blakely, | :03:34. | :03:38.
that's the many victims of domestic violence, Jayden was infatuated by | :03:39. | :03:45.
you. You deliberately and selfishly encouraged her emotional dependence | :03:46. | :03:49.
on you by manipulating her feelings through fear. This raises questions | :03:50. | :03:54.
as to what more could have been done to save Jayden and what lessons can | :03:55. | :03:56.
be learned from this case. The murder of Jayden Parkinson was | :03:57. | :03:59.
shocking, not least because the 17`year`old was pregnant | :04:00. | :04:01.
with Ben Blakeley's baby. Such a violent act wasn't | :04:02. | :04:04.
unexpected by everyone. They used to say he was a bully, | :04:05. | :04:14.
controlling. In my mind I would | :04:15. | :04:32.
say he was a bully. Being hit, | :04:33. | :04:37.
no man should have hit a woman. This case has highlighted | :04:38. | :04:39.
the growing awareness of Police have called on victims to | :04:40. | :04:41.
come forward but campaigners say it difficult for women to escape once | :04:42. | :04:46.
they become involved with Lebanon. Most women | :04:47. | :04:54.
if they do leave a relationship, Women who do not have access to | :04:55. | :04:59.
specialist support to help them through that, | :05:00. | :05:06.
it can be incredibly dangerous. It is not | :05:07. | :05:10.
a simple to think she should go. This case leaves | :05:11. | :05:12.
questions unanswered. Now, a series of reviews will | :05:13. | :05:15.
look at what went wrong. Thames Valley Police's role is being | :05:16. | :05:17.
independently assessed, There's also This will look at the part social | :05:18. | :05:20.
services played, and the support The hostel where Jayden had | :05:21. | :05:24.
been staying before her death It's hoped the findings will help | :05:25. | :05:28.
protect vulnerable young people There is now going to be two | :05:29. | :05:42.
separate investigations into how the police and local authorities dealt | :05:43. | :05:47.
with Jayden Parkinson while she was alive and went missing. Both of | :05:48. | :05:51.
those will report next year. This trial is not completely over because | :05:52. | :05:56.
the jury failed to reach a verdict on Ben Blakely's younger brother who | :05:57. | :06:00.
was accused of preventing a lawful burial, burying Jayden. He denies | :06:01. | :06:09.
this. A decision about a retrial just for the younger brother will be | :06:10. | :06:10.
made next Friday. Meanwhile, a mother of four has been | :06:11. | :06:13.
sentenced to 13 years in prison for her part in an arson attack which | :06:14. | :06:16.
killed two children in Oxford. Fiaz Munshi had denied being | :06:17. | :06:19.
involved in the fire in 1997 but, earlier this week, | :06:20. | :06:22.
was found guilty of manslaughter. It's been 17 years since this | :06:23. | :06:24.
grieving mother's been able to visit Eight`year`old Anum, | :06:25. | :06:30.
and Majid who was 15. Until today, | :06:31. | :06:38.
a journey she says she's emotionally Her family say Mehfooz Akhtar's | :06:39. | :06:41.
life ended in the embers of her She attempted suicide, | :06:42. | :06:48.
and had to be sectioned as she These scenes, just minutes after | :06:49. | :06:52.
seeing the woman who helped plot Fiaz Munchi, a mother of four, | :06:53. | :06:58.
the final person convicted Fiaz Munchi is an evil | :06:59. | :07:05.
and sick woman. The driving force behind this | :07:06. | :07:15.
revenge attack and knew all along she was the motive for | :07:16. | :07:18.
revenge, not the drugs or affairs. She did nothing but lie | :07:19. | :07:21.
from day one. She went on to have four children | :07:22. | :07:23.
of her own, and I hope her family might have a semblance | :07:24. | :07:27.
of the pain she perpetrated on us. Five others and Fiaz's sister Riaz | :07:28. | :07:30.
were all previously jailed Fiaz was outcast by her family | :07:31. | :07:32.
after a secret romance with Amjad This led to her | :07:33. | :07:39.
and the others firebombing The police have apologised for | :07:40. | :07:45.
delays in bringing Fiaz to justice, I hope the severity of this sentence | :07:46. | :07:49.
shows to people how seriously the court took this case, how seriously | :07:50. | :08:08.
they felt, how fundamental they saw The Khan family invited us | :08:09. | :08:11.
here today to witness this most They say to show they're survivors, | :08:12. | :08:16.
united and defiant against those who In sentencing Fiaz to 13 years, | :08:17. | :08:20.
the judge said her day of reckoning has arrived, she cared | :08:21. | :08:27.
nothing for the most fundamental Hundreds of tonnes of waste has now | :08:28. | :08:29.
been removed from the Averies Recycling site in Swindon, following | :08:30. | :08:36.
a huge fire on Monday evening. 1,000 tonnes of waste went up | :08:37. | :08:38.
in flames, and fire fighters are still working | :08:39. | :08:40.
on the site to put out rubbish piles Crews are expected to be there | :08:41. | :08:44.

money. The coach company has gone bust, and has cancelled around | :08:52. | :08:54.
?1,000 holidays with immediate effect. Hatts isn't a member of the | :08:55. | :08:58.
Association of British Travel Agents, which could make it more | :08:59. | :09:00.
difficult for people to get a refund. The firm had been trading | :09:01. | :09:03.

What have I done to my life? How did I ruin my life? I've got | :09:59. | :10:10.

which I should have found That new life was largely thanks to | :10:14. | :10:18.

early, or stay up all night, That's what it looked like in Kent, | :11:43. | :11:45.
and here in Sheffield. So, will you be out | :11:46. | :12:00.
and watching between 3 and 5 am? No, I am not, | :12:01. | :12:06.

too late in the day and it has left us with no option other than to | :14:05. | :14:09.
close the business. Still to come, if you are wondering what to do this | :14:10. | :14:12.
weekend, we have the weather forecast. One more day to enjoy the | :14:13. | :14:17.

with just a slight bump to his head. Time for the sport. There is a Test | :14:50. | :14:58.
match any minute. It is very exciting. | :14:59. | :15:03.
I am excited, I am going on Monday. I hope they can play a bit better. | :15:04. | :15:10.
Some of that in a moment. First, some news. | :15:11. | :15:12.
We understand a deal has been agreed with Liverpool for Southampton | :15:13. | :15:14.
He'll undergo a medical over the weekend after the clubs reached | :15:15. | :15:18.
The Croatian ` who made no secret of wanting to leave ` will join | :15:19. | :15:22.
former teammates Rickie Lambert and Adam Lallana at Anfield. | :15:23. | :15:25.
There was another medal for the South at the Commonwealth | :15:26. | :15:34.
Games in Glasgow today ` this time a bronze in the shooting. | :15:35. | :15:36.
It adds to a swimming bronze last night. | :15:37. | :15:38.
And there could be more success before the day is out, | :15:39. | :15:41.
with athletes from our region in finals in judo and swimming. | :15:42. | :15:44.
Daniel Rivers from England has got a new Commonwealth Games record in | :15:45. | :16:04.
qualifying. Didcot's Dan Rivers was the man to | :16:05. | :16:06.
beat after storming qualifying But the final went | :16:07. | :16:09.
down to the wire ` he claimed bronze A shoot off was the undoing of | :16:10. | :16:13.
hotly`tipped teenager Amber Hill. She just missed out on reaching the | :16:14. | :16:20.
final. An injury meant Wokingham's | :16:21. | :16:23.
Megan Fletcher had to have her face taped up midway through her | :16:24. | :16:25.
under 70kg judo semi`final. It could have easily thrown her ` | :16:26. | :16:28.

also from Wokingham, Both go for gold | :16:33. | :16:34.
in the next half hour. There are two medal chances | :16:35. | :16:41.
for Reading's Adam Barratt tonight. He booked his place in the freestyle | :16:42. | :16:43.
relay final this morning. And Andrew Willis ` | :16:44. | :16:46.
who won bronze last night ` is through to the semi`finals | :16:47. | :16:50.
of the 100m breaststroke. England's netballers ` | :16:51. | :16:54.
featuring four players from the south ` showed why they're one | :16:55. | :16:56.
of the favourites for Commonwealth gold with a 65`25 win against Wales | :16:57. | :17:01.
in their first group match. My mother and brother drove up from | :17:02. | :17:13.
Burnham. It is great. The Scottish crowd have got right behind us so we | :17:14. | :17:17.
are appreciative of the netball fans coming to watch us. And even people | :17:18. | :17:22.
who have not watched netball before. `` Bournemouth. | :17:23. | :17:24.

didn't qualify for the final of the 3,000m individual pursuit. | :17:30. | :17:33.
Danny Williams from the judo has won gold in the under 73 kilograms. | :17:34. | :17:39.
Fantastic news. More on that in the late news tonight. | :17:40. | :17:40.
Cricket, and Hampshire's Ageas Bowl is gearing up to host | :17:41. | :17:43.
the test match this weekend between England and India. | :17:44. | :17:45.
It'll be only the second test the venue has hosted. | :17:46. | :17:47.
The Ageas Bowl held its maiden test match in 2011, a rain`soaked draw | :17:48. | :17:55.
Now the ground will be hosting its second test, when India visit | :17:56. | :18:00.
Hampshire for Sunday's third match against England. | :18:01. | :18:04.
India looked relaxed in training for Sunday's third test. | :18:05. | :18:07.
Hardly surprising as they're one match up | :18:08. | :18:09.
England's Test debutant Jos Buttler will replace Sussex's Matt Prior | :18:10. | :18:14.
He has good memories of the Ageas Bowl. | :18:15. | :18:24.
My first 100 was here, we had some exciting 2020 finals day in Somerset | :18:25. | :18:31.
as well so I enjoyed the ground, I like the place and it will be a | :18:32. | :18:35.
place that holds some special memories come Sunday morning. | :18:36. | :18:36.
But he joins a squad struggling for consistent form with bat or ball | :18:37. | :18:41.
They are hurting and disappointed that they are not playing their | :18:42. | :18:49.
brand of cricket and getting the results they wanted but there is the | :18:50. | :18:52.
underlying determination from everyone to turn that around and put | :18:53. | :18:54.
results right. What could make | :18:55. | :18:56.
a real difference to the result is the wicket, it's reportedly looking | :18:57. | :18:59.
to be in better condition than the first two matches, so we could | :19:00. | :19:01.
see some really exciting cricket. Hampshire's chairman hopes | :19:02. | :19:07.
the quality of that wicket and a successful test match could be | :19:08. | :19:09.
the beginning of even bigger things I would still want to stage an Ashes | :19:10. | :19:20.
Test match, I don't want to be saddled with the reputation of being | :19:21. | :19:24.
the only England Test match ground that has never been awarded an Ashes | :19:25. | :19:28.
Test match. We must put our best foot forward and put a strong case. | :19:29. | :19:34.
Unusually this Test starts on a Sunday. | :19:35. | :19:36.
Can England deliver ` and can a new venue deliver a classic contest? | :19:37. | :19:39.
Portsmouth's young boxing star Ebonie Jones has made it through | :19:40. | :19:44.
to the final of the European Women's Junior Championships. | :19:45. | :19:46.
Ebonie, who's 15 and here in the blue, trains at the Heart | :19:47. | :19:49.
She beat Italian Lucy Garafalo on home turf at the competition | :19:50. | :19:54.
in Assisi with a unanimous points decision. | :19:55. | :19:57.
Ebonie won gold at the event last year and faces Polish boxer | :19:58. | :20:01.
Berkshire synchronised swimmer Andrea Holland is returning to | :20:02. | :20:09.
competition for the first time in 35 years. | :20:10. | :20:11.
56`year`old Andrea is a former British and European champion, | :20:12. | :20:13.
She was working as a commentator at London 2012 when she was inspired | :20:14. | :20:21.
The key reason for me was too maybe inspire a slightly older generation. | :20:22. | :20:36.
It is never too late to get back into sport. I feel like I'm a | :20:37. | :20:42.
different person than I was six months ago for the fact that I am | :20:43. | :20:46.
fitter again. Good on her! She is not the oldest woman in the pool. | :20:47. | :20:48.
Now, earlier this year we spoke to a record breaking swimmer ` | :20:49. | :20:51.
who's still taking a regular dip at the ripe old age of 99. | :20:52. | :20:54.
John Harrison has notched up five world records | :20:55. | :20:56.
And how did he celebrate this milestone birthday? | :20:57. | :21:00.
By jumping in for a swim at his local pool in Surrey of course! | :21:01. | :21:08.
Happy birthday to John. Isn't that brilliant? The secret to his youth. | :21:09. | :21:17.
Congratulations, John. It has been another lovely day. For many it is | :21:18. | :21:20.
the start of the summer holidays. Thousands have flocked to | :21:21. | :21:28.
the south's beaches to cool off But it's a luxury that wasn't | :21:29. | :21:31.
available to those who lived through the Second World War, | :21:32. | :21:36.
until this day 70`years`ago. But in 1944 it was | :21:37. | :21:37.
a very different picture. Mines and anti`tank obstacles | :21:38. | :21:42.
littered Bournemouth beach as a precaution against | :21:43. | :21:44.
the threat of German invasion There was panic, so the beach was | :21:45. | :21:54.
cleared, or the places of entertainment were closed so that | :21:55. | :21:57.
any landing craft would be obstructed. | :21:58. | :21:59.
There was a beach bathing ban in place from 1939 right up to this | :22:00. | :22:02.
After D`Day, things eased and eventually the road came, you can | :22:03. | :22:13.
open the beach. They allow the people to go through in their | :22:14. | :22:16.
hundreds with their deckchairs just to sample being on the beach once | :22:17. | :22:17.
more. Today, the picture is very different | :22:18. | :22:22.
as hundreds came to the beach to enjoy the seaside breeze | :22:23. | :22:25.
and even a few who went for a swim. It is a packed beach. You can see | :22:26. | :22:33.
nearby so when the weather is nice, nearby so when the weather is nice, | :22:34. | :22:36.
it is the perfect race to come with the little ones and just enjoy it. | :22:37. | :22:41.
We have nice weather, which is not very often in England. | :22:42. | :22:43.
And the sun is shining on Bournemouth who are already | :22:44. | :22:46.
benefiting from a boost in trade due to the good weather. | :22:47. | :22:49.
Half ?1 billion per year is spent in Bournemouth that the results of | :22:50. | :22:54.
tourism and for people who cannot remember half a billion, ?1000 for | :22:55. | :22:58.
every minute of every day of the year, that is so much tourism is | :22:59. | :23:00.
worth. Mines and barbed wire are long past | :23:01. | :23:03.
dangers, but still a warning to those who are | :23:04. | :23:05.
heading to the beach this summer. We advise people to stay hydrated | :23:06. | :23:12.
and stay out of the sun from 11 until three. This he is not too | :23:13. | :23:17.
treacherous, but the tide will increase, so there is the potential | :23:18. | :23:21.
for people to get into difficulty. `` the sea is not to treacherous. | :23:22. | :23:24.
In this year of poignant anniversaries, this is | :23:25. | :23:26.
a town where generations of holiday makers are united by a common love | :23:27. | :23:29.
I think it will be packed tomorrow. Yes. | :23:30. | :23:39.
We've had some lovely weather photos as always but today we've gone for a | :23:40. | :23:42.
bit of a theme ` your pets cooling off from the scorching heat ` | :23:43. | :23:45.
lots more on our Facebook page, but here are three that caught our eye. | :23:46. | :23:49.
Jack the dog getting a soaking ` thanks to Alicia Penman | :23:50. | :23:51.
This could have been one soggy moggy if Kelly Wadmore had turned | :23:52. | :23:56.
And Michelle Hare captured this picture | :23:57. | :24:04.
And look at this one. This is a picture of art to this is a picture | :24:05. | :24:21.
of bit of a star. He took part in Wednesday's Commonwealth Games | :24:22. | :24:23.
opening ceremony and I think he'll led in both Bangladesh and then | :24:24. | :24:26.
Trinidad and obey God. What a gorgeous dog. `` Trinidad and will | :24:27. | :24:40.
be go. `` Trinidad and Tobago. Some heavy downpours this afternoon | :24:41. | :24:45.
with some thunder and lightning as well. The band working its way | :24:46. | :24:48.
across. This pocket here seeing quite a bit of thunder and lightning | :24:49. | :24:53.
in the last 30 minutes. Those thunderstorms tend to ease away as | :24:54. | :24:58.
we go through this evening. Integer date we can expect drier conditions | :24:59. | :25:02.
to develop in the coming hours. `` into tonight. Once the showers clear | :25:03. | :25:07.
we are left with, not quite cloud free skies, eastern parts seeing | :25:08. | :25:11.
some mist and murk, a few more breaks to the West. 17 or 18 degrees | :25:12. | :25:15.
below two nights of feeling very sticky, muddy conditions once again | :25:16. | :25:20.
tonight. Saturday we start the day with perhaps some of the low cloud | :25:21. | :25:24.
once again in the East but that breaks up fairly regularly and we | :25:25. | :25:27.
are left with another day of good sunny spells. Nice break finds sunny | :25:28. | :25:31.
conditions. Temperatures once again peeking into the mid`to high 20s saw | :25:32. | :25:38.
26, 20 7 degrees possible. The chance of a shower for the eastern | :25:39. | :25:41.
parts but most of them in the east of London. Tomorrow night a dry and | :25:42. | :25:46.
quiet affair, we will see a little cloud around, again the temperatures | :25:47. | :25:50.
staying in the high teens and so it will feel hot and sticky once again. | :25:51. | :25:54.
But the changes on its way as we head into Sunday, we have a cold | :25:55. | :25:58.
front working its way in, so Sunday will be a sunny spells and scattered | :25:59. | :26:03.
showers but some fresh air arriving as the cold front sweeps through and | :26:04. | :26:07.
into the new working week we have cooler conditions, one or two | :26:08. | :26:09.
showers but some good bright and sunny intervals as well. Just a | :26:10. | :26:14.
little cooler than recently. Plenty of events to look forward to this | :26:15. | :26:15.
weekend. The Worthing Filipino Festival | :26:16. | :26:16.
is taking place tomorrow. There'll be some warm sunshine | :26:17. | :26:18.
on offer as the town celebrates the Philippines with food, | :26:19. | :26:20.
music and sports. And in Stockbridge near Winchester | :26:21. | :26:22.
there's an open gardens event ` the perfect place to enjoy a cream | :26:23. | :26:25.
tea in the sunshine, though it'll Your summery for the coming days, | :26:26. | :26:38.
not doing too badly, temperatures cool enough on Sunday into the new | :26:39. | :26:42.
working week. Just before we go, a look ahead | :26:43. | :26:42.
to next week on South Today. Preparations are under way for this | :26:43. | :26:45.
year's New Forest and Hampshire County Show, which attracts | :26:46. | :26:48.
around 100,000 visitors each year. And alongside all the agricultural | :26:49. | :26:51.
and countryside exhibits, We've teamed up with | :26:52. | :26:55.
Southampton Solent University to build a complete studio | :26:56. | :26:58.
so that you can have a go at being And we've got very high hopes | :26:59. | :27:02.
for our entry in the exhibitors' No guesses as to who that is! I | :27:03. | :27:19.
think it is my best side. That is it from us, have a great weekend, more | :27:20. | :27:22.
from us at 10:25 p.m.. | :27:23. | :27:27. |
