The death of a robber after passers`by stopped hil | :00:08. | :00:11.
His family challenge evidence at an inquest that heart disease meant | :00:12. | :00:16.
From phones to laptops ` how there's been a big rise | :00:17. | :00:22.
in the number of data devicds lost by Thames Valley Police. | :00:23. | :00:25.
A month after the fire, the waste is finally going ` | :00:26. | :00:30.
but nearby residents are warned the smoke could temporarily get worse. | :00:31. | :00:35.
And, later on, aiming for Rho ` the junior Olympian with her sights | :00:36. | :00:38.
Good evening. The family of a robber who was held down by a group of | :00:39. | :00:56.
people as he tried to escapd from a jeweller's shop in Oxford h`ve | :00:57. | :00:59.
challenged evidence given at his inquest. | :01:00. | :01:01.
Clint Townsend stopped breathing inside the covered market l`st | :01:02. | :01:04.
March. Today doctors told an inquest he had | :01:05. | :01:06.
a heart condition and could have died at any time. | :01:07. | :01:10.
But his family maintain Mr Townsend never recovered because sevdral | :01:11. | :01:13.
people sat on him to stop hhm getting away. | :01:14. | :01:15.
Arriving at Oxford coroner 's Court this morning, Clint Townsend's | :01:16. | :01:28.
family weren't in to find ott exactly how he died and whether the | :01:29. | :01:34.
actions of other people led to his death. The family have been posing | :01:35. | :01:38.
questions throughout the inpuest and today they asked questions by Rick | :01:39. | :01:44.
League 2 police officers who attended the scene. They asked why | :01:45. | :01:48.
did it take you so long to try to resuscitate Clint and why dhd you | :01:49. | :01:54.
not think he needed immediate medical attention when he w`s | :01:55. | :02:00.
unresponsive? Lease offices described their difficulty hn | :02:01. | :02:02.
assessing whether Clinton w`s breathing, as he was wearing a thick | :02:03. | :02:13.
jacket and a neck scarf. Today we saw some of the objects found at the | :02:14. | :02:20.
scene, John Gowing Jeweller's in the covered market. We saw the | :02:21. | :02:24.
sledgehammer used to smash the window and we had descriptions of | :02:25. | :02:31.
the gas canisters which werd found at the scene but not activated. The | :02:32. | :02:40.
pathologist described the pdrfect storm of restraint and coronary | :02:41. | :02:43.
heart disease that led to the death. The postmortem revealed that | :02:44. | :02:48.
Clinton was obese and had an abnormally large heart and `rteries | :02:49. | :02:53.
just one millimetre wide. The pathologist concluded that `ll look | :02:54. | :02:57.
`` although restraint, that is, people pinning Clint down, was one | :02:58. | :03:03.
cause of death, his heart condition was so severe that he could have | :03:04. | :03:10.
died at any time. The corondr will deliver her verdict tomorrow | :03:11. | :03:14.
morning. She has gone home with a host of papers from the famhly, who | :03:15. | :03:19.
have highlighted inconsistencies in the police reports. They sax the | :03:20. | :03:26.
amount of force placed on Clint was unnecessary and that that w`s the | :03:27. | :03:31.
main course of his death `` main cause. | :03:32. | :03:35.
There's been a big rise in number of electronic devices lost | :03:36. | :03:37.
by Thames Valley Police in the past three years. | :03:38. | :03:40.
The items most frequently lost are mobile phones ` | :03:41. | :03:42.
more than 150 went missing hn 2 13, compared to just two in 2010. | :03:43. | :03:45.
Thames Valley Police say security hasn't been breached | :03:46. | :03:47.
but technology experts have warned of the dangers of misplacing data. | :03:48. | :03:49.
Adina Campbell has been following this story. | :03:50. | :03:51.
Adina, why has there been such a rhse? | :03:52. | :03:53.
Well, Geraldine, using technology is an important | :03:54. | :03:55.
Many officers use mobile phones laptops and USB sticks. | :03:56. | :03:58.
But, with a growing number of gadgets being handed out, | :03:59. | :04:01.
A Freedom of Information repuest by BBC Oxford has found, in 201 , | :04:02. | :04:08.
13 electronic devices were unaccounted for. | :04:09. | :04:11.
But in 2013 that figure rose to 166. | :04:12. | :04:15.
On average, that's three devices going missing every week. | :04:16. | :04:19.
The former Chief Constable of Thames Valley Police, Peter Neyroud, | :04:20. | :04:21.
who's now a criminologist, has given reaction to the increase. | :04:22. | :04:26.
It doesn't surprise me the force has lost some. | :04:27. | :04:30.
We always did and we always will do so. | :04:31. | :04:35.
If I was sat on the Monday lorning meeting with the figures coling | :04:36. | :04:38.
through with that level of hncrease I would certainly want to fhnd out | :04:39. | :04:42.
whether there was some genuhne problem behind these numbers. | :04:43. | :04:47.
Security experts we've spokdn to say these figures raise questions | :04:48. | :04:50.
about just how much police `re doing to protect their equipment ` | :04:51. | :04:54.
to stop sensitive information falling into the the wrong hands. | :04:55. | :04:58.
And local IT workers say th`t means being as security conscious | :04:59. | :05:00.
You cannot just think to protect it, you have to go a step furthdr | :05:01. | :05:09.
and make sure you can encrypt it to the highest level. | :05:10. | :05:13.
These days people think, yes, let's put a password on these files, | :05:14. | :05:17.
on that server, but you just need the password and you are in, | :05:18. | :05:21.
so encryption actually to the highest level would be more useful. | :05:22. | :05:25.
Thames Valley Police told us the loss of any electronic equipment is | :05:26. | :05:28.
taken seriously and they usd encryption software to try `nd stop | :05:29. | :05:31.
information falling into thd wrong hands. | :05:32. | :05:35.
They also insist there's bedn no reported data breaches as a result | :05:36. | :05:38.
Thames Valley Police have rdleased an image of a man | :05:39. | :05:49.
they want to speak to in connection with a rape | :05:50. | :05:51.
The man is around 35 years old, of athletic build, | :05:52. | :05:55.
An 18`year`old woman was attacked walking over the footbridge | :05:56. | :05:59.
which crosses Childs Way at around one o'clock in the morning | :06:00. | :06:01.
Rail services between Swindon and the West country will bd | :06:02. | :06:05.
The line between Swindon and Kemble is being upgraded, while signalling | :06:06. | :06:08.
Swindon Railway Station will be closed to some routes, | :06:09. | :06:13.
and passengers may have to travel by bus. | :06:14. | :06:15.
First Great Western says the work's due to finish on Sunday. | :06:16. | :06:32.
and instead be offered support. | :06:33. | :06:33.
Offenders will be invited to the Steppin' Stone day centre cdntre in | :06:34. | :06:36.
Cowley, which supports vulndrable people. | :06:37. | :06:37.
The city council says the offer will only apply to those caught for the | :06:38. | :06:40.
first time, and people are being warned that begging is still a | :06:41. | :06:43.
First off they can come to ts, we can work with them, address any of | :06:44. | :06:50.
the issues, whether housing issues, substance misuse, employment, and | :06:51. | :06:52.
we can start working with them first to see if we can help with the | :06:53. | :06:56.
situation before they go down the caution route. | :06:57. | :06:58.
Nearly a month after waste caught fire at a recycling centre | :06:59. | :07:00.
in Swindon, neighbours have spoken of their relief that | :07:01. | :07:03.
Local councils, the environlent agency and fire fighters have taken | :07:04. | :07:06.
control of the Averies site, which is still alight. | :07:07. | :07:08.
Hundreds of tonnes of rubbish is being removed | :07:09. | :07:10.
but residents have been warned their ordeal may not be over yet. | :07:11. | :07:13.
It's been searing, smoulderhng and smoking for four whole weeks. | :07:14. | :07:21.
It's forced businesses to shut and imprisoned people in their homes. | :07:22. | :07:25.
But finally ` bit by bit ` around a third of this commdrcial | :07:26. | :07:29.
rubbish at the Averies wastd site in Swindon is being removed, | :07:30. | :07:32.
enabling firefighters to tackle what lies beneath. | :07:33. | :07:39.
We want to put the fire out, limit the smoke going into the | :07:40. | :07:46.
neighbourhood, in the busindsses. We know it has taken some time to get | :07:47. | :07:52.
to this phase and now we want to get on with securing the site as quickly | :07:53. | :07:55.
as possible. The waste needs to be separ`ted | :07:56. | :07:58.
so it can be extinguished. But the authorities couldn't | :07:59. | :08:01.
decide where to take it. Now, though, | :08:02. | :08:03.
a destination has finally bden agreed ` a landfill site in Blunsdon | :08:04. | :08:05.
on the edge of town. But, after a month | :08:06. | :08:08.
of watching taxpayers' monex go up I am really pleased that we are | :08:09. | :08:16.
getting the waste moved off the site, that is really good progress | :08:17. | :08:20.
and it shows we were right to call for action, but it is reallx | :08:21. | :08:26.
important to understand why this was allowed to happen, why the `gencies | :08:27. | :08:31.
did not act early to sort this out, and we have to make sure it never | :08:32. | :08:32.
happens in Swindon again. As for people living | :08:33. | :08:35.
and working nearby, well, they're just glad to see thd lorries | :08:36. | :08:37.
arrive and the waste leave. The smell is awful and it jtst needs | :08:38. | :08:46.
going now. Every time the whnd blows it is really bad in here. I can t | :08:47. | :08:50.
believe how long it has takdn to clear. | :08:51. | :08:52.
But today's news comes with a health warning. | :08:53. | :08:54.
The authorities say there's a danger that as they move | :08:55. | :08:57.
the rubbish the smoke could get worse before it gets better. | :08:58. | :09:03.
Managers at Silverstone say they hope this year's MotoGP racd will | :09:04. | :09:16.
not be the first one at the track. Race organisers at Silverstone say | :09:17. | :09:20.
they may be able to stage the event again. | :09:21. | :09:23.
Supporters of MK Dons queued around the block this morning | :09:24. | :09:25.
for tickets for the League Cup game against Manchester United. | :09:26. | :09:27.
The match on August the 26th is being described as | :09:28. | :09:30.
Some fans camped out overnight as 29,000 tickets for the | :09:31. | :09:34.
Capital Cup match at Stadiul MK went on sale this morning. | :09:35. | :09:36.
The fixture was sold out by this afternoon. | :09:37. | :09:44.
Very big game. And we are going to win it. Nothing to do with le but I | :09:45. | :09:53.
have been in the queue sincd 7: 0am for my sons. It is big for le | :09:54. | :10:00.
because I support both teams and it is my birthday. | :10:01. | :10:10.
The monument to a hero that many have now forgotten. | :10:11. | :10:27.
Plans for a public bike rental scheme rejected | :10:28. | :10:29.
by the National Park Authorhty despite the fact that it had already | :10:30. | :10:32.
secured government funding to help get it off the ground. | :10:33. | :10:34.
The plan would have introduced 50 bikes at a number | :10:35. | :10:37.
But just recently there havd been strong feelings against large`scale | :10:38. | :10:40.
Travel anywhere in the new Forest and you will be hard pressed not to | :10:41. | :10:57.
see a bike. One idea was to bring in Boris bikes similar to thosd in | :10:58. | :11:03.
London. 250 available at docking sessions across the forest. But | :11:04. | :11:07.
today, members of the park `uthority voted against it. We had thd chance | :11:08. | :11:13.
to use ?2 million government money to trial a project. What I heard | :11:14. | :11:16.
from other members was that they were not prepared to a risk. Last | :11:17. | :11:23.
secured millions of pounds to secured millions of pounds to | :11:24. | :11:29.
encourage family cycling. ?2 million of this would have been spent on the | :11:30. | :11:34.
part `` bike scheme. It is understood that there were concerns | :11:35. | :11:38.
about the financial viability of the project and there have been a change | :11:39. | :11:44.
in public opinion regarding cycling and big event in the new Forest and | :11:45. | :11:49.
their impact on local peopld. This report recommended that the project | :11:50. | :11:53.
should not proceed. The authority insists that the new Forest will not | :11:54. | :11:59.
be missing out. Avenue constltation showed that Boris bikes schdmes are | :12:00. | :12:04.
not top of the list, but cycling is and it has always been top of our | :12:05. | :12:08.
list. So I don't think the new Forest will miss out in any way We | :12:09. | :12:13.
still have these funds and we have every intention of finding other | :12:14. | :12:16.
ways to spend it to make cycling more safe and more availabld to more | :12:17. | :12:22.
families whether as residents or when they come to visit. Thd scheme | :12:23. | :12:28.
had been backed by Olympic gold medallist Chris Boardman and a | :12:29. | :12:31.
petition in support attractdd 2 00 signatures. There are many | :12:32. | :12:37.
authorities were trying to lake bike share a reality without that level | :12:38. | :12:41.
of funding and I'm not sure this level of funding will happen again | :12:42. | :12:45.
for the new Forest. The authority says it will spend the monex | :12:46. | :12:46.
elsewhere. For many people the sound | :12:47. | :12:56.
of a church bell is reassurhng, idyllic. But at Ventor, on the Isle | :12:57. | :12:59.
of Wight, the hourly chime of a church bell all day and night has | :13:00. | :13:02.
led to claims it's a noise nuisance. Now the bell has been silenced while | :13:03. | :13:06.
the council investigates. Sdan At Holy Trinity in Ventnor, | :13:07. | :13:08.
the hourly chime in no longdr In April, it was turned off | :13:09. | :13:16.
for two months for repairs. When it was resumed, | :13:17. | :13:20.
one local resident complaindd to the council about it sounding | :13:21. | :13:22.
the hour day and night. The church agreed to silencd it | :13:23. | :13:25.
while the council investigates. The hourly chime has not sotnded | :13:26. | :13:28.
since the middle of July. Mark Bell is going to | :13:29. | :13:31.
demonstrate for us. This is what it would sound like | :13:32. | :13:37.
if the chimes were ringing. We were advised | :13:38. | :13:50.
by the environmental health officers that they had taken readings | :13:51. | :13:52.
and they were above the World Health Organisation's limit and that | :13:53. | :13:55.
four individual environment`l health officers gave a subjdctive | :13:56. | :14:00.
view that it was a nuisance. The council says that it has not | :14:01. | :14:04.
served a notice on the church but is We are looking at our nuisance | :14:05. | :14:08.
legislation and what we do hs look at the complaint, assess it, and | :14:09. | :14:14.
the nuisance looks at reasonableness Something which may be fine during | :14:15. | :14:17.
the day may be a problem at night. But silencing the bell has caused | :14:18. | :14:24.
a row. OK, respect the rights | :14:25. | :14:27.
of that one person. Yes, I like to hear the clock, | :14:28. | :14:30.
if you wake up in the night, The church is considering sdtting | :14:31. | :14:38.
a timing mechanism to silence the church at night but has been | :14:39. | :14:45.
told that that could cost ?2,00 . `` to silence the chime at night. So | :14:46. | :15:02.
the bell has fallen silent for the moment. On to sport, a cracking | :15:03. | :15:08.
weekend. Britain top of the charts as far as medals were concerns. Yes, | :15:09. | :15:15.
European athletics. And the rugby. They were the undoubted stars of the | :15:16. | :15:17.
weekend. England's victorious world cup | :15:18. | :15:28.
winning rugby squad are still to terms with their stunning vhctory | :15:29. | :15:31.
in Paris on Sunday night. It was the culmination of months | :15:32. | :15:33.
of hard work for the squad who fit Earlier this year you may rdmember | :15:34. | :15:36.
we filmed them in a special training session at | :15:37. | :15:40.
HMS Collingwood in Gosport. Among the squad, Claire Purdy who | :15:41. | :15:42.
comes from Ash near Aldershot. Claire joined me | :15:43. | :15:44.
in the studio earlier and I started by asking her to sum up the feeling | :15:45. | :15:47.
of being a world champion. I don't think it has sunk in yet. It | :15:48. | :16:00.
is only 48 hours since we played. I have the medal to prove we did it. | :16:01. | :16:05.
It has come to fruition aftdr four years of effort and training camps | :16:06. | :16:10.
and selection worries and wd got there and achieved our goal. And the | :16:11. | :16:15.
elation on Sunday night in Paris must have been amazing. Yes, the | :16:16. | :16:21.
stadium was electric. There were 28,000 people there. A numbdr of | :16:22. | :16:25.
England supporters have comd over, friends, family. It renders | :16:26. | :16:31.

the bus and we had a parade and there was a band. On the page, you | :16:41. | :16:45.

Well, for 170 years, a huge stone obelisk has loomed over | :21:01. | :21:02.
Lymington in Hampshire, but not many people can remember why it's there. | :21:03. | :21:05.
