Good evening and welcome to BBC Points West. In our headlines

:00:10.:00:18.

tonight: Shot down and left for dead. 23-

:00:18.:00:20.

year-old Rico Gordon was killed outside a Bristol pub and two

:00:20.:00:23.

others are still in hospital. Fly-tipping on railway lines, we

:00:23.:00:25.

discover the true cost of the delays caused by dumping.

:00:25.:00:28.

Some great apes on the loose, celebrating 175 years of Bristol

:00:28.:00:33.

zoo. And bee afraid, the swarms

:00:33.:00:43.
:00:43.:00:49.

bothering the people of Bath Good Evening. The police in Bristol

:00:49.:00:52.

are continuing to investigate a shooting which left one young man

:00:52.:00:57.

dead and two others, a man and a woman, injured. 23-year-old Rico

:00:57.:01:00.

Gordon from London was killed outside a pub in Easton in the

:01:00.:01:03.

early hours of yesterday morning. It is the third violent incident in

:01:03.:01:07.

the area in a week and there has been a strong reaction from the

:01:07.:01:16.

local community. Police officers continued to scour

:01:16.:01:26.
:01:26.:01:27.

the scene on Stapleton Road today. Anything they deemed unusual or

:01:27.:01:30.

possibly significant is marked with yellow and evidence was taken away

:01:30.:01:33.

for further examination. We now have a better idea of what happened

:01:33.:01:36.

here just after 4:00 am yesterday as two rival groups from London

:01:36.:01:45.

chose this as their battleground. There were more trouble shots fired.

:01:45.:01:55.
:01:55.:01:56.

Neither of these groups seemed to come from this area. This

:01:56.:02:01.

investigation is taking us to London and we are working hard to

:02:01.:02:05.

arrest those involved. 23-year-old Rico Gordon was fatally

:02:05.:02:08.

wounded two others are in hospital but their injuries are not life

:02:08.:02:11.

threatening. They are a man from London and a 19-year-old woman from

:02:11.:02:15.

Bristol. So far four young men from outside the city have been arrested.

:02:15.:02:23.

Their ages range from just 16 to 23. The shooting follows two stabbings

:02:24.:02:26.

last week and there is no link between the crimes but this

:02:27.:02:29.

community has had enough. One of those stabbings took place here in

:02:30.:02:37.

Abdul Malik's shop. One of the things that we need on this road is

:02:37.:02:44.

a major police operation that goes on for a while where people are

:02:44.:02:52.

searched and made aware that this type of crime will not be tolerated.

:02:52.:02:57.

This will not be tolerated here. And a local councillor says enough

:02:57.:03:03.

is enough. We cannot go on with this escalating violence that we

:03:03.:03:09.

have seen over the last few weeks. I call upon the chief constable to

:03:09.:03:17.

get a grip on this area. The council needs to give people in the

:03:17.:03:20.

East the chair and to live their lives in peace and not be

:03:20.:03:30.
:03:30.:03:30.

threatened with violence. -- the chance to live their lives in peace.

:03:30.:03:33.

Senior police officers are keen to stress that progress is being made

:03:33.:03:36.

investigating all three attacks but they know that many in the local

:03:36.:03:39.

community are scared and want action rather than assurances. This

:03:39.:03:42.

is as diverse a road as you will ever find, ethnically, socially,

:03:42.:03:44.

economically, but there's a consensus on this is that these

:03:44.:03:47.

violent attacks must stop and they must stop now. We have seen overall

:03:47.:03:50.

levels of violent crime reduce but this will cause concern and we have

:03:50.:03:52.

got to work harder to ensure that we can prevent these issues

:03:52.:04:02.
:04:02.:04:16.

If you travel by train you are probably familiar with the odd

:04:16.:04:20.

delay that is blamed on an obstruction on the line and this is

:04:20.:04:22.

often caused by rubbish being dumped on our railways. It costs

:04:22.:04:26.

Network Rail more than 2 million a year to deal with the problem and

:04:26.:04:29.

this week the company's trying to tackle the issue with a mass clean

:04:29.:04:33.

This may look like a grassy railway bank but nestled in here is tonnes

:04:33.:04:36.

of rubbish that has been dumped illegally. It is a danger and an

:04:36.:04:46.
:04:46.:04:46.

eyesore and it is costing millions to get it cleared.

:04:46.:04:51.

Sites like this are completely inaccessible. There is no way to

:04:51.:04:57.

bring a lorry down here and load it up with rubbish. Instead, 30,000

:04:57.:05:02.

is being spent just on this stretch of road, where people will have to

:05:02.:05:09.

remove the rubbish by hand. And the rubbish is not just unsightly. Much

:05:09.:05:12.

of it can pose a danger to the public, like dumped asbestos and

:05:12.:05:14.

syringes. And household waste attracts rats, chewing through

:05:14.:05:17.

cables leaving Network Rail with the inconvenience and cost of

:05:17.:05:22.

repair. Over the next week the clear up will get underway. Network

:05:22.:05:28.

Rail hope that the public will start to get the message. We are

:05:28.:05:33.

working very closely with the local authorities and the British

:05:33.:05:39.

Transport police to stamp this problem out altogether and we are

:05:39.:05:45.

informing people that they should be removing their waste responsibly.

:05:45.:05:48.

If anyone is caught dumping rubbish on railways they can face

:05:48.:05:56.

prosecution and in the worst cases a prison sentence.

:05:56.:05:59.

A Somerset couple brutally attacked and left for dead while on holiday

:05:59.:06:02.

in the Caribbean island of Tobago have been offered less than 3,000

:06:02.:06:05.

each in compensation. Peter and Murium Green say the amount is

:06:05.:06:07.

beneath contempt. Meanwhile Points West has learned that detectives

:06:07.:06:17.
:06:17.:06:20.

from Trinidad and Tobago will be visiting the Greens this weekend.

:06:20.:06:25.

It does not even cover our legal expenses.

:06:25.:06:27.

The letter from the Trinidad and Tobago Criminal Injuries

:06:27.:06:30.

Compensation Board has left them angry and dismayed. Peter and

:06:30.:06:33.

Murium Green suffered facial and brain injuries that will live with

:06:33.:06:36.

them for ever. But the maximum amount they will be offered in

:06:36.:06:39.

compensation is 25,000 Trinidad dollars. That is a little less than

:06:39.:06:49.
:06:49.:06:54.

2,500. It is so unfair. It has affected your wife very badly. How

:06:54.:07:01.

are you feeling? I know I am a burden to my wife. No, you are not.

:07:01.:07:11.
:07:11.:07:13.

I cannot continue to be that burden. I need help. Just a recognition...

:07:13.:07:19.

We did not deserve this. They call it a chopping. It is great, isn't

:07:19.:07:27.

it? It was two years ago that the Greens were attacked with a machete

:07:27.:07:30.

and left for dead at their holiday home in Tobago. The BBC has

:07:30.:07:33.

followed their case closely ever since. At one time a local man was

:07:34.:07:37.

arrested but later released and so far no one has been brought to

:07:37.:07:45.

justice. We have learned that this weekend detectives from the

:07:45.:07:48.

Caribbean will fly over to meet the Greens in an attempt to resurrect

:07:49.:07:51.

the enquiry, not that the couple are optimistic. The one lesson we

:07:51.:07:55.

have learned about Trinidad and Tobago is that it disappears in a

:07:55.:08:05.
:08:05.:08:06.

week or two and you hear no more. spoke to someone who has taken up

:08:06.:08:11.

the case as he was about to board a plane on foreign business. He says

:08:11.:08:16.

he is disappointed there has it been no progress on this case and

:08:16.:08:19.

has promised to raise it again with the government in Trinidad and

:08:19.:08:23.

Tobago. Peter's health is deteriorating every day. He is

:08:23.:08:26.

finding it harder to walk. But he says he is determined see justice

:08:26.:08:32.

done. You are watching Points West. Good

:08:32.:08:38.

to have you with us. Coming up: We will be looking back at this

:08:39.:08:41.

weekend's St Paul's carnival in Bristol. But before that: $$NEWLIN

yesterday morning. It spread along a row of flats and shops in Market

:09:06.:09:09.

Street and several people had to be rescued by firefighters. The 25-

:09:09.:09:15.

year-old will appear at Gloucester Crown Court next week.

:09:15.:09:19.

There has been a clash in the Commons over the route to be taken

:09:19.:09:21.

by funeral corteges after repatriations are moved away from

:09:21.:09:30.

RAF Lyneham. The Armed Forces Minister said the new route had

:09:31.:09:33.

been chosen in consultation with local people, but the Labour MP

:09:33.:09:36.

Paul Flynn said they were being denied the chance to pay their

:09:36.:09:39.

respects because it wasn't going through the heart of the

:09:39.:09:40.

neighbouring village. Dealing with blocked drains is

:09:41.:09:44.

about to become less of headache for some people in the West. At the

:09:44.:09:47.

moment, homeowners are responsible for sewers up to the point where

:09:47.:09:50.

they join the mains system. Changes to the law which come into effect

:09:50.:09:52.

this autumn mean water companies will take responsibility for

:09:52.:09:59.

thousands of miles of sewers which run under private land.

:09:59.:10:04.

It is a domestic crisis no one wants to deal with. Blocked drains

:10:04.:10:08.

can be expensive and under the current system you can end up

:10:08.:10:13.

paying for blockages in sewers that are not event under tour land. At

:10:13.:10:17.

the moment homeowners are responsible for their own drains

:10:17.:10:22.

are right up and to the point -- until the point they joined up here

:10:22.:10:32.
:10:32.:10:35.

in the middle of the road. This all, what are companies will take

:10:35.:10:39.

ownership of many more serious. will be taking over the

:10:39.:10:45.

responsibility of these sewers and relieving the customer of the

:10:45.:10:49.

responsibility and potentially saving a lot of money. Good news

:10:49.:10:55.

for some of their customers but extra expense for the water company.

:10:55.:11:00.

At their headquarters they are taking on 22 new staff to help deal

:11:00.:11:05.

with the rising workload and they estimate 55,000 more blockages a

:11:05.:11:09.

year will become a problem. The company says it will cost them

:11:09.:11:14.

millions but they are welcoming it. We were having to inform the

:11:14.:11:21.

customer that it was not our public sewer system at fault. The customer

:11:21.:11:26.

was unaware that they were responsible. The change please the

:11:26.:11:29.

customer with responsibility for the short length of pipe that is

:11:30.:11:34.

just under their house. It could mean higher water bills in the

:11:34.:11:38.

future but the company says that the rise will be small and will not

:11:38.:11:48.
:11:48.:11:48.

An 800-year-old listed building in Bath has been given permission to

:11:48.:11:51.

install double-glazing. St John's Hospital had to convince

:11:51.:11:55.

conservationists that the scheme would not compromise the look of

:11:55.:11:58.

the building. The Bath Preservation Trust has published guidance for

:11:58.:12:01.

occupiers of other historic buildings in the city which

:12:01.:12:05.

explains how to improve the heating of their homes while staying

:12:05.:12:11.

sympathetic to the architecture. Bath had the lions, but now Bristol

:12:11.:12:16.

has aped that with guerrillas. 60 gorillas were let loose from

:12:16.:12:22.

Bristol Zoo today to celebrate the zoo's 175th birthday. We have

:12:22.:12:28.

joined in too without own painted primates. Jules Hyam is in Bristol.

:12:28.:12:34.

Who is your friend? I know you have both met this find

:12:34.:12:43.

the specimen. This is Custard, the BBC children In Need gorilla. He is

:12:43.:12:47.

just one of 60 gorillas which will be dotted around the City of

:12:47.:12:51.

Bristol over the next few weeks. Around almost every corner is a

:12:51.:12:56.

gorilla. Some are very colourful, some are very cool, but they are

:12:56.:13:01.

all proving rather popular. A number of the guerrillas have a

:13:01.:13:07.

real Bristol field to their designs. This one place for City, it would

:13:07.:13:13.

not be a Bristol Fein without disembarking Dunbar now. Some it

:13:13.:13:22.

seemed to have an identity crisis. this is just one of 60 gorillas

:13:22.:13:26.

that have been designed and brought to life by local artists. There is

:13:26.:13:30.

really quite a range. It is not just be big professionals that have

:13:30.:13:36.

been getting involved, there are also 100 smaller gorillas and they

:13:36.:13:40.

have been created by it slightly smaller artist. We were going to go

:13:40.:13:46.

for a silver back but it was not very interesting. So we thought we

:13:46.:13:55.

would use buttons in different colours. The we wanted to make it

:13:55.:14:03.

really colourful. We have used reds, yellows, greens and blues...

:14:03.:14:08.

have got over 100 schools involved in the project. Not just looking at

:14:08.:14:12.

the arcs side of it and the in credit -- the incredible creativity

:14:12.:14:18.

in schools, but also learning about gorillas and conservation problems.

:14:18.:14:28.
:14:28.:14:30.

Then of course, there is our very own Custard,. I have not done any

:14:30.:14:35.

painting for ages. It was like being back at school. This is our

:14:35.:14:37.

creation and hopefully it will bring some money to Children in

:14:37.:14:45.

Need. Some of the guerrillas or the static -- saw the city in style on

:14:45.:14:50.

a boat trip. Who says that television is not quite as

:14:50.:14:59.

glamourous as he used to be? May be Custard did not have any fun

:14:59.:15:03.

getting here but he seems to be quite happy year. You can go and

:15:03.:15:07.

find them if they want to or you can go online and find a map and

:15:07.:15:10.

that will tell you exactly where they are. How do you do that?

:15:10.:15:17.

Hopefully, you will see the Web address on the screen now. Let me

:15:17.:15:21.

just show you a little bit more of Custard because he is going to be

:15:21.:15:26.

auctioned off for Children in Need. He has been signed. Laurence

West's team. Alex, you have any but one plays! Can we have another look

:15:46.:15:55.

at it? That is a big kiss. That is my defence. Plus, the boys that

:15:55.:16:02.

have not left any rooms. We have reached the time of year

:16:02.:16:05.

again. The Brits have failed to dominate at Wimbledon and the

:16:05.:16:08.

fingers have started to point out what is going wrong in the British

:16:09.:16:11.

game. Grass roots terraces looking pretty

:16:11.:16:16.

healthy in the West. On Friday, we featured 10-year-old Ola Pittak

:16:16.:16:20.

from Somerset who is already the number one tennis player for her

:16:20.:16:25.

age. Today, so we got has been to a new tennis club in Gloucestershire

:16:25.:16:30.

which has got hundreds reaching for their rackets.

:16:30.:16:35.

Another year, another British disappointment. Britain's only

:16:35.:16:40.

Wimbledon victory came in the boy's doubles. Maybe there is hope in the

:16:40.:16:45.

form of this brand the new tennis club, formed by villagers raising

:16:45.:16:51.

40,000 and beat Lawn Tennis Association throwing in 100,000

:16:51.:16:56.

more. A quarter of the village has already signed up. You see people

:16:56.:17:01.

walking around the village with tennis racquets on their back. It

:17:01.:17:06.

is lovely to see the excitement. Today's players are from the nearby

:17:06.:17:09.

primary school. They also benefit from the Lawn Tennis Association's

:17:09.:17:13.

cash. In return, the club needs to keep its numbers up and it looks

:17:13.:17:21.

like they might be succeeding. Hopefully I can do a bit more if I

:17:21.:17:26.

can bribe my parents to pay for it. As well as starting them young, the

:17:26.:17:31.

club's professional coach is also hunting for talent. His is also a

:17:31.:17:38.

numbers game and says that the facilities are inclusive.

:17:38.:17:42.

junior rates are cheaper. And the coaching rates are affordable. I

:17:42.:17:46.

can still offer more and more things within the price as the

:17:46.:17:50.

programme grows. Interest could not be higher after the weekend's

:17:50.:17:55.

heroics but naming a champion is even trickier. I do not remember

:17:55.:18:05.
:18:05.:18:05.

his fame. -- names. Novak Djokovic. The club emerged against the odds

:18:05.:18:09.

and aims to become a shiny example of what is good about British

:18:09.:18:19.
:18:19.:18:22.

Bath's Recreation Ground is hosting tonight's Twenty-20 match between

:18:22.:18:25.

Somerset and Essex. The pitch is new and has been prepared on the

:18:25.:18:31.

rugby side of the ground which enables them to use the permanent

:18:31.:18:35.

stands for spectators. Essex won the toss and have decided to bat

:18:35.:18:40.

first. They have scored 209 for five.

:19:31.:19:38.

That is the sound when you get drunk and your head hurts. For the

:19:38.:19:41.

past three days, these children have been working on a musical

:19:41.:19:46.

about one of the school's first pupils. Clara Grant was drawn and

:19:46.:19:49.

brought up in this house opposite the school gates. She became a

:19:49.:19:54.

teacher and moved to London. She transformed the lives of people in

:19:54.:19:59.

the East End and built a school and a community centre. She fed them,

:19:59.:20:03.

cloaked them and gave Tories to children who knew nothing but

:20:03.:20:10.

poverty. She became known as the lady of Bo. She helps the children

:20:11.:20:17.

who did not have much. She built this arch and children that were

:20:17.:20:22.

short enough to go under the arch, were giving a farthing to get a

:20:22.:20:28.

bundle. For boys, it had blue ribbon and for gulls, pink. It made

:20:28.:20:32.

the children feel like they had something. I think she is really

:20:32.:20:42.
:20:42.:20:42.

good, helpful and nice. It is quite amazing because she came from the

:20:42.:20:51.

school and she went so far. pupils from her village and the

:20:51.:20:54.

pupils from the Tower Hamlets's primary school are working on a

:20:54.:21:00.

musical. It will be performed at a festival on Friday. At Clara

:21:01.:21:03.

Grant's funeral, the streets of London were lined by families who

:21:04.:21:08.

had been helped by her. Now the children from two different

:21:08.:21:18.
:21:18.:21:18.

communities will come together to Do not be afraid, swarms of bees

:21:18.:21:21.

have been spotted in the centre of Bath. Lots of people came across

:21:21.:21:25.

them on the weekend and have been posting their pictures on Twitter

:21:25.:21:31.

and Facebook. Why are the bees swarming?

:21:31.:21:36.

They certainly look dramatic. These be swarms were swept -- snapped

:21:36.:21:43.

over the weekend. Even Bath's Olympic gold medallist Amy Williams

:21:43.:21:47.

tweeted a snap from her phone. The police put a cordon up but today

:21:47.:21:53.

only a few stragglers were at home. What causes these swarms? They are

:21:54.:22:03.

about having enough room in the hive. When there is a new queen and

:22:03.:22:08.

she takes off, with part of the hive, to establish a new colony,

:22:08.:22:16.

based warm. Or a new queen takes her loyal group and establish his

:22:16.:22:21.

another colony elsewhere as the younger Queen asserts her. These

:22:21.:22:26.
