Hello and welcome to the programme. In the Points West headlines | :00:11. | :00:14.
tonight: A community is shocked by a tragic death - police question | :00:14. | :00:21.
two people after a toddler is found dead in a Bristol flat. After a | :00:21. | :00:24.
Taunton teenager is run down by a car, it's emerged the driver may | :00:24. | :00:32.
have been racing another car at the time. It is an A star. 35 years of | :00:32. | :00:38.
hurt! Also tonight, the father of a GCSE pupil getting his own exam | :00:38. | :00:42.
results today. And the Masterchef celebrity getting all of a Twitter | :00:42. | :00:52.
:00:52. | :00:55. | ||
Good evening. A man and woman have been arrested after a toddler was | :00:55. | :00:58.
found dead in Bristol. The two- year-old was found at a flat in St | :00:58. | :01:08.
:01:08. | :01:15. | ||
George on Sunday morning. Imogen Sellers has more. The circumstances | :01:16. | :01:23.
surrounding the death remain unclear. Officers are at the flat. | :01:23. | :01:27.
We know that a couple in their thirties were arrested on suspicion | :01:28. | :01:32.
of manslaughter yesterday. They were arrested at another property | :01:32. | :01:37.
where they have been staying since the little boy died. They are in | :01:37. | :01:44.
police custody. What we do not know is how the little boy died. | :01:44. | :01:51.
Neighbours had described scenes of chaos. They have expressed their | :01:51. | :01:57.
understandable shock and sadness at the death of a toddler. Bristol | :01:57. | :02:04.
City Council are working with A second person has appeared in | :02:04. | :02:07.
court today charged in connection with the death of 13-year-old Amy | :02:07. | :02:10.
Hofmeister. The Taunton teenager was killed when a car went out of | :02:10. | :02:15.
control and careered into her on a cycle path. The driver of that car | :02:15. | :02:18.
has already appeared in court. But now a woman who was at the wheel of | :02:18. | :02:25.
a second car is also being prosecuted. | :02:25. | :02:28.
Every day since it happened, Amy's mum visits the scene of her | :02:28. | :02:32.
daughter's death. The grief is still raw - so too the desire for | :02:32. | :02:42.
:02:42. | :02:42. | ||
justice. She is my first thought when I wake and by last thought | :02:43. | :02:48.
when I go to sleep. It is all- consuming. I cannot think ahead | :02:48. | :02:54.
anymore. It is one day at at time. I am trying to come to terms with | :02:54. | :03:01.
it. We miss her so much. Amy was just 13 when she died, cycling home | :03:01. | :03:05.
in Taunton one June evening. The driver of the car has already | :03:05. | :03:10.
pleaded guilty to death by dangerous driving. He was said to | :03:10. | :03:15.
have been driving at more than twice the legal limit when his car | :03:15. | :03:20.
went out of control and hit Hainey. It is understood he was racing | :03:20. | :03:23.
another car. Today, Leanne Burnell, 22, on the left here, became the | :03:23. | :03:26.
second driver to appear at Taunton Magistrates Court charged with | :03:26. | :03:31.
causing the death of Amy by dangerous driving. The Crown | :03:31. | :03:40.
Prosecution Service took the decision to charge her last week. | :03:40. | :03:45.
Having reviewed the evidence I concluded that there was a | :03:45. | :03:51.
realistic prospect of a conviction, for jointly charging her. And it | :03:51. | :03:55.
was in the public interest to do so. Leanne Burnell and her family had | :03:55. | :03:58.
nothing to say as they left today's hearing. She'll now face trial at | :03:58. | :04:01.
Crown Court, and her legal team says she will be pleading not | :04:01. | :04:05.
guilty. A condition of her bail is she doesn't drive until the case is | :04:05. | :04:15.
:04:15. | :04:15. | ||
over. In the's family are turning their attention to a fund run being | :04:15. | :04:22.
held in her memory on Sunday. The money will go to a charity | :04:22. | :04:26.
supporting the families of crash victims. Police in Bristol have | :04:26. | :04:28.
arrested more suspects in connection with the recent riots in | :04:28. | :04:31.
the city. They've also released new CCTV pictures of the disturbances | :04:31. | :04:36.
in Stokes Croft and St Paul's. Senior officers have told the BBC | :04:36. | :04:39.
that the heavy sentences handed out elsewhere succeeded in halting the | :04:39. | :04:48.
These new CCTV pictures taken at the height of the Bristol riots | :04:48. | :04:50.
show crowds advancing along Surrey Street between Portland and | :04:51. | :04:57.
Brunswick Square. Some of those thought to have been responsible | :04:57. | :05:01.
were today being arrested. But the police, who say they are working | :05:01. | :05:04.
flat out on the case, urgently want help from the public in tracking | :05:04. | :05:09.
down more suspects. None of those charged in connection with the | :05:09. | :05:13.
riots in Stokes Croft, and here in St Paul's, have been sentenced. | :05:13. | :05:16.
Elsewhere what have been described as draconian jail terms have been | :05:16. | :05:21.
handed down. The police claim such sentences have proved to have been | :05:22. | :05:31.
:05:32. | :05:33. | ||
a successful deterrent. Then there has been a very strong approach | :05:33. | :05:41.
from everyone to make sure there is not a recurrence. I think it is the | :05:41. | :05:46.
right message to be sent out. far in Bristol 51 people have been | :05:46. | :05:48.
arrested. 23 have been charged, including | :05:48. | :05:51.
nine under the age of 18. In Gloucester there have been 30 | :05:51. | :05:56.
arrests. 14 have been charged, including seven under 18. | :05:56. | :05:59.
Businesses in Cabots Circus are still recovering from the damage of | :05:59. | :06:09.
:06:09. | :06:11. | ||
two nights of rioting. It is now more than two weeks since this shot | :06:11. | :06:17.
was attacked during the riots. It will cost several thousand pounds | :06:17. | :06:26.
to repair the window. The shop also lost money in stolen jewellery. | :06:26. | :06:33.
was horrible. It is affecting us. It is affecting our pay. We are not | :06:33. | :06:37.
getting as much trade. If anyone recognises, or can identify those | :06:37. | :06:43.
caught in these CCTV pictures, they should contact the police. | :06:43. | :06:46.
Welcome to Thursday's Points West. Chris and Alex with you this | :06:46. | :06:50.
evening - thank you for joining us. Coming up, as Muslims reach the end | :06:50. | :06:53.
of Ramadan, we join worshippers at the Bristol Mosque as they throw | :06:53. | :07:03.
:07:03. | :07:05. | ||
their doors open to the homeless. And he's bright - very bright. We | :07:05. | :07:08.
meet the four-year-old from Cheltenham with an IQ higher than | :07:08. | :07:18.
:07:18. | :07:19. | ||
Hundreds of mourners turned out today to pay their respects to a | :07:19. | :07:23.
Gloucestershire-based soldier who died in Afghanistan this month. | :07:23. | :07:26.
Lieutenant Daniel Clack was killed by an improvised explosive device | :07:26. | :07:33.
earlier this month, as he led a foot patrol in Helmand Province. Up | :07:33. | :07:35.
to 150 of Lieutenant Clack's comrades from the Rifles were | :07:35. | :07:40.
present at today's service in Essex. It was his battalion's fourth loss | :07:40. | :07:50.
:07:50. | :07:55. | ||
on their current tour of duty. The envelopes have all been torn | :07:55. | :07:58.
open and the results read - another year of GCSE fever is nearly over. | :07:58. | :08:01.
Across the West, results went up. And in Bristol, they reached a | :08:01. | :08:04.
significant milestone - half of all pupils got five good passes, | :08:04. | :08:07.
including Maths and English - that's 4% more than last year. | :08:07. | :08:11.
Later this evening, the parties will be starting. Alice Bouverie is | :08:11. | :08:21.
:08:21. | :08:24. | ||
in Bristol city centre for us this I suspect there will be groups of | :08:24. | :08:30.
young people either having a private parties or just | :08:30. | :08:37.
congregating as they are here. There is at least one night club in | :08:37. | :08:45.
Bristol promising the biggest GCSE party, with a dry bar. I'm sure | :08:45. | :08:49.
there will be a little partying in the corridors of power at the | :08:49. | :08:55.
Council house. Also a quiet satisfaction. They have reached an | :08:55. | :09:05.
:09:05. | :09:08. | ||
important benchmark. 50% of pupils have gained five A * to C GCSEs. | :09:08. | :09:12.
Our cameras have been out and about today capturing those key moments | :09:12. | :09:17.
when the pupils have been opening their envelopes. In south | :09:17. | :09:27.
:09:27. | :09:40. | ||
Gloucestershire, 50% of pupils have Emotions run high on the GCSE day. | :09:40. | :09:45.
Even one worse than expected result can be devastating. Opening that | :09:45. | :09:52.
envelope gives even the best candidate the shakes. It is the | :09:52. | :10:02.
Spanish. What has it been like a? Horrible. Yesterday everybody was | :10:02. | :10:10.
like, results tomorrow. We could not deal with it. I have been | :10:10. | :10:18.
really nervous. These are the first GCSE results at Redland Green. | :10:18. | :10:25.
Policy... So they're being watched by educationalists across the city. | :10:26. | :10:30.
Absolutely thrilled with the results. Maths and science have | :10:30. | :10:33.
been particularly successful. Bristol's been near the bottom of | :10:33. | :10:36.
the education league tables for years. Now though, it's beginning | :10:36. | :10:39.
to climb up them. Back in 2002, less than one in four children were | :10:39. | :10:43.
getting five A to C grades. 10 years on, that number has more than | :10:43. | :10:47.
doubled. 50% is still below the national average, but it's a | :10:47. | :10:57.
:10:57. | :10:57. | ||
significant milestone for the council. People who live here | :10:57. | :11:03.
Michael Reddy will be heartened by some of the results across the city. | :11:04. | :11:07.
-- who live here already. Some pupils did not do so well and we | :11:08. | :11:11.
intend to help them as much as we can. The general progress is very | :11:11. | :11:14.
good. On the evidence of the figures, Bristol's secondary | :11:14. | :11:21.
schools are definitely improving. It is not just teenagers who have | :11:21. | :11:30.
been tearing open those on Vobster day. Scott Ellis has been catching | :11:30. | :11:34.
up with the growing army of grown- ups having another go at getting a | :11:34. | :11:37.
GCSE - having failed a CSE or even an O-level some decades ago. Keen | :11:37. | :11:40.
and eager to learn, to make a better future. I'm talking about | :11:40. | :11:43.
Kathy Chapman, Robert Horwat and Dawn Wells, of course. All have | :11:43. | :11:50.
juggled jobs family and GCSE. Dawn took Maths, Robert took English. | :11:50. | :11:56.
just felt I owed it to myself after not passing it at 16. I did not | :11:56. | :12:03.
feel I could ask my children to do well if I had not done well at mine. | :12:03. | :12:11.
Robert took English. He remembers his first day back at school. | :12:11. | :12:16.
was first daunting. Then it was really enjoyable. Kathy took Maths, | :12:16. | :12:23.
and found exam day doesn't getter easier with age. The last time I | :12:23. | :12:29.
sat an exam was in the 80s. It was very nerve-racking. So can a | :12:29. | :12:39.
:12:39. | :12:42. | ||
combined age of 133 notch up three A's? I got an A. I got an E the | :12:42. | :12:52.
:12:52. | :12:52. | ||
first time around. I have got an A. I am really pleased. And a star. 35 | :12:52. | :12:56.
years of hurt! Top marks all round. And celebrating with them, the | :12:56. | :13:03.
Maths tutor. Who finds adults a demanding bunch. They turned up | :13:03. | :13:13.
:13:13. | :13:14. | ||
early every week. They will not let me go until late every week. It is | :13:14. | :13:19.
true. A very demanding bunch! Robert, the exam nerves weren't | :13:19. | :13:22.
over. Son Sam got his results today too. Dad did slightly better at | :13:22. | :13:29.
English this time. But Sam can always have another go, another day. | :13:29. | :13:39.
The next date the councils will be waiting for his January, when the | :13:39. | :13:44.
national results come at. A Libyan student living in Cheltenham, has | :13:44. | :13:48.
told BBC Points West about her hopes for the future of her country. | :13:48. | :13:50.
Zainab Abdusalam Ahmed is from Tripoli, where her brothers have | :13:50. | :13:53.
been fighting for the rebels. She also spoke about the dangers her | :13:53. | :13:56.
family and friends have experienced at first hand. Our Gloucestershire | :13:56. | :14:06.
:14:06. | :14:11. | ||
reporter, Steve Knibbs, has been to Unless you have a good connection | :14:11. | :14:19.
with the regime, he treats us like animals. You can see that from his | :14:19. | :14:24.
words, when he said that rebels are rats. Zainab Abdusalam Ahmed has | :14:24. | :14:27.
lived under the Gaddafi regime all her life. She's experienced the | :14:27. | :14:30.
tragedy of opposing his rule, even for her fellow Libyan students | :14:30. | :14:39.
living here in Gloucestershire. of our colleagues he went back and | :14:39. | :14:49.
:14:49. | :14:51. | ||
they hung him. He went to Tripoli, Libya. His name was in the list. So | :14:51. | :14:57.
they killed him. I am really angry. I really wish they can capture him. | :14:57. | :15:03.
He will make more troubles two Libyans. Zainab's brothers are | :15:03. | :15:06.
amongst the rebels fighting in Tripoli, and that's made not being | :15:06. | :15:09.
at home even more difficult But even with with Gadaffi still at | :15:09. | :15:12.
large, Zainab is getting a sense from home that her country is | :15:12. | :15:16.
already rebuilding itself. I am concerned about what is happening. | :15:16. | :15:26.
That there might be injured or dead. All of the neighbours have agreed | :15:26. | :15:36.
:15:36. | :15:38. | ||
to forgive people loyal to Gaddafi. There rhys mack no more fighting. - | :15:38. | :15:43.
- there is no more fighting. My brother is hoping to create a local | :15:43. | :15:48.
Council in each area to secure a street. And to help people who need | :15:48. | :15:57.
help. You know, it is kind of social work together. It is | :15:57. | :16:02.
something amazing, I think. When they talk about it, I wished I was | :16:02. | :16:07.
with them. Zainab is due to finish her PhD soon and return home to her | :16:07. | :16:10.
family, but also to her country, which she admits has a difficult | :16:10. | :16:17.
but brighter future. Everybody wants to build the country. | :16:17. | :16:26.
Everybody wants to do something. That is a good start. | :16:26. | :16:29.
As the Islamic holy month of Ramadan comes to an end, Bristol's | :16:29. | :16:31.
Jalalabad Cultural centre is holding a slightly different fast | :16:31. | :16:35.
breaking meal than usual. This year, for the very first time, the centre | :16:35. | :16:38.
is opening its doors to the homeless and to refugees in the | :16:38. | :16:43.
city, inviting them to share their feast. Nazma Chowdhury went to see | :16:43. | :16:46.
how they got on. It's 8pm and already the fourth | :16:46. | :16:51.
time today people have come to pray. And because it's the fasting month | :16:51. | :17:01.
:17:01. | :17:01. | ||
of Ramadan, it's at least 12 hours since they've last eaten. | :17:01. | :17:06.
reason they do it is to be closer to God. But also to remember those | :17:06. | :17:13.
less fortunate, and to never forget about the suffering taking place. | :17:13. | :17:15.
And so Waliur has put that sentiment into practice. He has | :17:15. | :17:18.
invited the homeless to join them all whilst they break their fasts | :17:18. | :17:28.
:17:28. | :17:29. | ||
and share a meal. Muslims fast between dawn and dusk. Before you | :17:29. | :17:35.
can eat a proper meal, lasts are broken with a cup of water and a | :17:35. | :17:45.
:17:45. | :17:52. | ||
date. -- fast. By I go for the rice and curry. Traditional Asian. | :17:52. | :17:56.
Mosques are community centres for everybody. As fasts are broken, | :17:56. | :18:02.
sadly Waliur's open invitation hasn't quite gone to plan. There is | :18:03. | :18:10.
an abundance of food. Lot left over. It seems a waste. With still just a | :18:10. | :18:13.
few days left to go of Ramadan, Waliur hopes people will take him | :18:13. | :18:22.
In football, Swindon manager Paolo Di Canio is bullish about his | :18:22. | :18:28.
side's chances of a pulling off a second upset in the Carling Cup. | :18:28. | :18:30.
They take on Southampton next week after beating another Championship | :18:30. | :18:40.
:18:40. | :18:43. | ||
side, Bristol City, by 1-0 at Ashton Gate last night. Different | :18:43. | :18:47.
managers have different styles. Last night's opponents were cordial | :18:47. | :18:54.
and shared the same club colours. They have different styles on the | :18:54. | :19:04.
:19:04. | :19:08. | ||
touchline. Paolo Di Canio even has his own backing track. He had much | :19:08. | :19:13.
more to shout about as his team had played Bristol City from two | :19:13. | :19:16.
divisions above them. He was understandably frustrated when Matt | :19:16. | :19:20.
Richie scuffed his shot with the goal at his mercy. City did create | :19:20. | :19:22.
chances, this from Bret Pitman, but Swindon deserved their winner - | :19:22. | :19:32.
:19:32. | :19:32. | ||
Lander Gabilondo setting up Celebrations on the final whistle | :19:32. | :19:42.
:19:42. | :19:45. | ||
as the Italian praised his players. It was not easy but the lads were | :19:45. | :19:49.
amazing. We should have been a couple of goals ahead in the first | :19:49. | :19:56.
half. Swindon were the better team on the night. You can accept defeat | :19:56. | :20:01.
but the manner of defeat is disappointing tonight. So while | :20:02. | :20:04.
Bristol City struggle to find their form, life is sweet and confidence | :20:05. | :20:07.
high at Swindon ahead of next Tuesday's second round tie against | :20:07. | :20:17.
:20:17. | :20:21. | ||
If you received your GCSEs today and found them a bit of a struggle, | :20:21. | :20:25.
you might feel a little envious of the person we are about to meet now. | :20:25. | :20:28.
William Gavin from Cheltenham has an IQ of 149 - which makes him a | :20:28. | :20:32.
bit of genius. And he's only four years old. David has been to see | :20:32. | :20:42.
:20:42. | :20:44. | ||
him. His mother runs this cafe. William | :20:44. | :20:54.
Gavin is a clever boy - a very, very clever boy. William is a nice | :20:54. | :21:04.
:21:04. | :21:08. | ||
name. How many letters has it got? 7. How bright is he? William's IQ | :21:08. | :21:12.
has been assessed by a psychologist at 149 - that makes him a pint- | :21:12. | :21:22.
:21:22. | :21:34. | ||
sized mastermind. But how bright is The average is between 85 and 115. | :21:34. | :21:40.
William is always asking questions for his parents? We were discussing | :21:40. | :21:49.
the diaphragm and how you got hiccups. I could not explain it. | :21:49. | :21:54.
will be expected to sit there nicely when the children are | :21:54. | :21:58.
learning their BBC. He knows voles and consonants. There will be | :21:59. | :22:05.
learning to count to 10 when he knows how to count to 100. William | :22:05. | :22:09.
is obviously one bright cookie. Let's hope he reaches his full | :22:09. | :22:15.
potential. How do you look after the gifted and talented? Perhaps we | :22:15. | :22:24.
should ask someone really clever. Like William. If you were out and | :22:24. | :22:27.
about in Bath today, you might have noticed more people than normal | :22:27. | :22:30.
rushing about looking at their phones. It's all down to Twitter | :22:30. | :22:33.
and an idea by the Bath Tourist Board to attract more visitors to | :22:33. | :22:38.
the city. Before we tell you more though, in case Twitter is just a | :22:38. | :22:48.
:22:48. | :22:49. | ||
lot of twoddle to you, here's how it works. Twitter is a free website | :22:49. | :22:58.
which allows you to post a message. It can be 140 characters long only. | :22:58. | :23:04.
If people are interested in what you post, they can follow you. | :23:04. | :23:07.
Among the famous faces who tweet daily are the likes of Lord Sugar | :23:07. | :23:13.
and Carol Vorderman. But of course it can also just be your next door | :23:13. | :23:15.
neighbour. So in Bath today, eight well-known online writers and | :23:15. | :23:18.
bloggers who have tens of thousands of followers on Twitter, have been | :23:18. | :23:21.
asking them about their experience of Bath and where they should visit. | :23:21. | :23:31.
:23:31. | :23:34. | ||
Lizzie Way has been on their trail. This used to be the traditional | :23:34. | :23:40.
place to come to find out where to go and what to do. Now it has got a | :23:40. | :23:44.
helping hand from the wonderful world of Twitter. The Bath Twitter | :23:44. | :23:48.
Trip is an idea by the Bath Tourist board to try and market the city in | :23:48. | :23:50.
a different way. Eight online writers and bloggers have been in | :23:50. | :23:53.
Bath today, asking where should they go and what should they do. | :23:53. | :23:57.
You might recognise this man taking part - he is 2011 Masterchef winner | :23:57. | :24:01.
Tim Anderson, who has 10,000 followers. Used to being under | :24:01. | :24:04.
pressure in the kitchen, he is looking for all the best local | :24:04. | :24:13.
ingredients which he'll use later to whip up a culinary delight. | :24:13. | :24:19.
thing that is really cool about this, his you cast your net wide | :24:19. | :24:23.
first suggestions and see what becomes of it. You get personal | :24:23. | :24:28.
suggestions. You get things based on people's experiences and things | :24:28. | :24:37.
that are exciting to them. You get good results from bat. -- from that. | :24:37. | :24:41.
A city has not been marketed in this way before, but since tourism | :24:41. | :24:43.
bosses here started using Twitter and Facebook, there's been a 100% | :24:43. | :24:48.
increase in people using the Visit Bath website. We cannot believe the | :24:48. | :24:54.
amount of tweets we're getting. It is fantastic, the reaction we have | :24:54. | :25:01.
had. From people who have never been here before, to the local | :25:01. | :25:10.
businesses. It is fantastic. Really pleased. People have had plenty to | :25:10. | :25:18.
treat about. I have so many people telling me where to go. I do not | :25:18. | :25:26.
really know who they are. So what have been the highlights of the day | :25:26. | :25:29.
for the Bath twitterers? By searching under the Twitter tag, | :25:29. | :25:37.
Bathtwitrip, you can read all the events of the day. Yes, BBC Points | :25:37. | :25:47.

West is on Twitter. Ian Ferguson is I'm going to send you a picture | :25:58. | :26:03.
which I took off all of you. Tomorrow we are into another day of | :26:03. | :26:11.
showers. There will be some sunny spells. Low pressure continues to | :26:12. | :26:16.
dominate the pattern as the weather chart shows quite clearly. The next | :26:16. | :26:22.
24 hours is a very complicated story. Overnight we will see some | :26:22. | :26:30.
rain busing into southern and eastern England. -- pushing. The | :26:30. | :26:36.
rainfall raider shows how the showers have been primarily | :26:36. | :26:43.
confined to western districts. Thunder in Wales. Dorset, Wiltshire | :26:43. | :26:49.
etc will be on the cards later. The broad theme of things is for | :26:50. | :26:55.
showers to develop, particularly in the south and west. Some will be | :26:55. | :27:00.
happy. Dry or further north. We will have more rain coming in from | :27:00. | :27:06.
the east. Temperatures at 11-12 Celsius. Tomorrow we will see the | :27:06. | :27:14.
impact of that rain extending last words. -- extending to the West. | :27:14. | :27:19.
The rest of the day will see heavy downpours, more widely distributed | :27:19. | :27:28. |
