Hello and welcome to BBC Points West. In tonight's headlines... The

reforming university admissions. Cheltenham-based UCAS says students

should apply AFTER getting their exam results. And a special BBC

:00:39.:00:42.

project goes behind the scenes at one of the National Trust's most

:00:42.:00:52.
:00:52.:00:54.

First tonight, a Somerset woman has been accused of killing her husband

:00:54.:00:57.

by suddenly pulling on the handbrake as he was driving. Her

:00:57.:01:00.

actions caused them to spin out of control and hit another car.

:01:00.:01:03.

Caroline Meeking denies a charge of manslaughter. Our Somerset

:01:03.:01:05.

correspondent, Clinton Rogers reports now from Bristol Crown

:01:05.:01:13.

Surrounded by family and friends Caroline Meeking left Bristol Crown

:01:13.:01:16.

Court this afternoon, hiding her face from the cameras. Earlier, as

:01:16.:01:19.

the evidence against her had unfolded she wept repeatedly in the

:01:38.:01:41.

with Mr Meeking at the wheel and his wife in the front passenger

:01:41.:01:46.

seat - a drunken argument started. Mrs Meeking claimed her husband

:01:46.:01:49.

started shouting at her, verbally abusing her and threatening to

:01:49.:01:56.

leave her. Suddenly, she pulled on the handbrake. The car spun out of

:01:56.:01:58.

control, hitting another car travelling in the opposite

:01:58.:02:00.

direction. Mr Meeeking suffered multiple injuries and died

:02:00.:02:07.

instantly. The driver of the second car said that after the crash she

:02:07.:02:17.

heard Mrs Meeking shouting: it is all my fault. I have killed him.

:02:17.:02:20.

They have been hearing details of the police interview after she was

:02:20.:02:25.

arrested. She said she had been upset by the disagreement with her

:02:25.:02:30.

husband and wanted to stop the car and get out and that is why she

:02:30.:02:34.

pulled on the handbrake. She said I did not realise that what I did

:02:34.:02:38.

would cause what happened. The prosecution say the crash and Mr

:02:38.:02:41.

Meeking's death was caused by an unlawful act that amounted to

:02:41.:02:45.

manslaughter. Mrs Meeking denies the charge. Her trial is likely to

:02:57.:03:02.

hopes to return to the government. In his first interview since

:03:02.:03:04.

resigning as Defence Secretary he admitted he'd made a "careless

:03:04.:03:07.

mistake". An official investigation found he'd broken the ministerial

he made a mistake. I take responsibility and I have always

been very keen all my life that people shoulder personal

responsibilities. For journalists descended on his home in Twickenham

difficult to do your proper job. You cannot physically move. The

:04:15.:04:20.

house gets barricaded. Relatives are telephoning because they are

:04:20.:04:27.

upset. Even to be staged at one of my nephews at the age of 14 was

Next year he got his first government job and has been a high-

flyer since. He hopes he can come back. I would certainly like to get

:04:44.:04:49.

back to the front bench. How quickly is another matter. I think

:04:49.:04:55.

for the moment, I will enjoy having a bit of extra time. I have got a

:04:55.:05:01.

couple of projects I would like to get involved in. He has always had

nonetheless. If it could happen here in a quiet a cathedral city -

:05:39.:05:46.

where was safe? Today, almost three months on, the Queen's cousin, the

:05:46.:05:49.

Duke of Gloucester and the Duchess, visited the local council to praise

:05:49.:05:53.

them and emergency workers for their response. I would just like

to congratulate all of you for proving that Gloucester is a

Almost a dozen local stores were targeted on that balmy august night.

also a talented artist. We've been to a new exhibition of her work.

:07:28.:07:31.

And finally a win for Bristol City, but there's no time to draw breath

:07:31.:07:38.

before they face West Ham tomorrow A 30 year old man from London has

:07:38.:07:42.

appeared in court charged with the murder of Rico Gordon in Bristol in

:07:42.:07:46.

July. Rico who was 21 and also from London was shot in the street on

the Stapleton Road. Shaka Anderson from Notting Hill was remanded in

custody until a bail hearing on Wednesday. The company which wants

Queen Square in Bath. Organisers of "occupy" say they're supporting the

:08:29.:08:32.

aims of similar protests on College Green in Bristol and outside St

:08:32.:08:38.

Paul's Cathedral in London. Bath and North East Somerset Council say

:08:38.:08:44.

they are 'monitoring' the situation. The camp currently has around 8 to

After his conviction last Friday for the murder of Jo Yeates, it was

:08:50.:08:53.

revealed that Vincent Tabak had led a secret life involving violent

:08:53.:08:56.

pornography and prostitutes. As he begins a life sentence, tonight's

:08:56.:09:04.

Inside Out West has a special report on the murder trial. Here is

:09:04.:09:08.

our correspondent. The Secret Life of Vincent Tabak. It only came to

:09:08.:09:13.

light at the end of the trial. You have had an exclusive interview

:09:13.:09:19.

with his lawyer. What has he said? He was convicted despite the fact

:09:19.:09:25.

the jury were not told anything about his obsession with

:09:25.:09:28.

prostitutes and hardcore pornography. The prosecution lost

:09:28.:09:33.

this argument that it should present this material to the jury.

:09:33.:09:39.

We have been talking to his lawyer about that legal battle. That is

:09:39.:09:45.

the crux of this. Despite the fact that the law has been changed and

:09:45.:09:50.

allows the jurors to here what is called bad character. Sometimes

:09:50.:09:53.

people think because we have got some bad character and

:09:53.:09:58.

reprehensible behaviour, people sometimes think it must be included.

:09:58.:10:04.

It does not follow. It has to give in to prove a point. Even if

:10:04.:10:08.

admissible, we have got another test about whether or not it is

:10:08.:10:13.

prejudicial and would have derailed a fair trial. We did not actually

:10:13.:10:17.

get to that particular argument. But it clearly would have been

:10:17.:10:22.

prejudicial. It did not actually go towards what actually happened

:10:22.:10:28.

within that period. You have also been talking to the family of Jo

:10:28.:10:34.

Yeates. How has it affected them? It has a tremendous intensity, this

:10:34.:10:39.

story. It will not go away. It centres on the family of Vincent

:10:39.:10:44.

Tabak as well. We have been speaking to Jo Yeates's father.

:10:44.:10:49.

They are coming to terms with how they feel about it. He says it is

:10:49.:10:52.

right but his interest in pornography was not put towards the

:10:52.:10:56.

jury. He and his wife are not certain it contributed to what

:10:56.:11:04.

happened. Chris, the brother agrees with what has been told that it

:11:04.:11:08.

could have prejudiced the outcome and even lead to an appeal. What

:11:08.:11:13.

about the suggestion that he was involved in other crimes? During

:11:13.:11:18.

the trial, again with the jury out, we had a legal debate and

:11:18.:11:24.

discussion. The prosecution said they would pursue other avenues in

:11:24.:11:27.

relation to Vincent Tabak. I have been talking to the police about

:11:27.:11:32.

what might or might not happen in relation to further charges. More

:11:32.:11:38.

about that at 7:30pm on Inside Out tonight. The Gloucestershire based

:11:38.:11:43.

university admissions body, UCAS says it favours a system where

:11:43.:11:48.

students apply to university after getting their exam results. It

:11:48.:11:51.

means exams being taken several weeks earlier to allow time for

:11:52.:12:01.

At the moment, teenagers choose a universities before sitting A-

:12:01.:12:05.

levels. They are given a target. Some meet them, some exceed and

:12:05.:12:12.

some fall short, sparking an anxious de days of finding a place.

:12:12.:12:18.

But UCAS thinks that should change to a system where students apply

:12:18.:12:23.

after their results are published. Only about 10% of applicants have

:12:23.:12:28.

got correctly predicted grades. Some of these applicants have to

:12:28.:12:34.

have predictions between five and eight months before exams. We are

:12:34.:12:38.

getting changes and we are getting government policies. The economic

:12:38.:12:44.

climate means we have to look for efficiencies. Just down the road is

:12:44.:12:47.

the University of Gloucestershire. What do young people here make of

:12:47.:12:52.

the proposals? This was my first choice anyway but I have got

:12:53.:12:56.

friends that apply for places where they did not get the grades. It is

:12:56.:13:01.

more realistic. You can apply for the ones you are likely to get.

:13:01.:13:07.

think by bringing the A-level exam results back by a few weeks, I

:13:07.:13:13.

think that it's... A lot more pressure on students to do well but

:13:13.:13:16.

a lot more pressure to revise quickly as well and that is not

:13:16.:13:21.

going to get the best out of people. It gives people the chance to make

:13:21.:13:26.

a decision based on proven capabilities instead of theoretical

:13:26.:13:29.

capabilities that they might not meet at all and it is essentially a

:13:30.:13:36.

big life choice. UCAS facilitates almost 700 thousand like the choice

:13:36.:13:40.

is every year. If the system is adopted, exams could take place

:13:40.:13:44.

earlier. University open days and admissions would change radically

:13:44.:13:54.
:13:54.:13:55.

it. But after 50 years, UCAS Let's move on to sport and, with

:13:55.:14:01.

the latest, here is David. Tomorrow, Bristol City travel to

:14:01.:14:04.

London for a game that will test their new manager and his plans for

:14:04.:14:09.

the team he took charge of 11 days ago. Bristol City play West Ham,

:14:09.:14:14.

who were still playing Premier League football in May, but City go

:14:14.:14:18.

into the game after their second win of the season on Saturday and

:14:18.:14:20.

their first under new boss Derek McInnes.

:14:20.:14:24.

He is not getting carried away by one result, but Derek McInnes is up

:14:24.:14:29.

and running, building confidence, the buzzwords at today's press

:14:29.:14:36.

corps, as his players learn how to win again. The result was City's

:14:36.:14:40.

first success in two months, but they are bottom of the table,

:14:40.:14:44.

heading to West Ham. You want to make sure we prepare properly for

:14:44.:14:48.

the game. We are looking to go there and make a good account of

:14:48.:14:53.

ourselves. We are not just going to enjoy the day. We have a lot of

:14:54.:14:57.

support travelling down. It is a fixture people are looking forward

:14:57.:15:04.

to. At the same time, it is a chance to pick up points. McInnes's

:15:04.:15:09.

direct and honest style has gone down well with his players.

:15:09.:15:13.

Goalkeeper David James is impressed with his new boss, actually a year

:15:13.:15:18.

his junior. Managers are getting younger these days! It is about him

:15:18.:15:24.

as a person, not ages. I like his philosophy on football. He is clear,

:15:24.:15:31.

which is important, and he doesn't mind say what he feels. For the

:15:31.:15:36.

players, they are going to know why and he gives them the right

:15:36.:15:41.

information to help us go forward. Fans will hope he can continue to

:15:41.:15:45.

get the best out of Nicky Maynard, after the striker returned to form

:15:45.:15:50.

in dramatic style at Barnsley. ability to score goals, just making

:15:50.:15:55.

sure we get them. We get good service into him and get him

:15:55.:15:59.

playing at the top of his game. A confident Nicky Maynard is a real

:15:59.:16:07.

asset. And, he hopes, a real threat to West Ham.

:16:07.:16:11.

Cheltenham Town have announced that one of their under 16 players has

:16:11.:16:15.

been killed after being in a collision with a car while jogging.

:16:15.:16:20.

Marcus Powell was jogging at the weekend when the accident happened.

:16:20.:16:23.

The club have asked that his family's privacy should be

:16:23.:16:28.

respected. Six Olympic and Paralympic teams

:16:28.:16:32.

have so far chosen to base their training camps in the West ahead of

:16:32.:16:37.

next year's London games, but what was it that attracted their elite

:16:37.:16:42.

athletes? In Bristol and Gloucester, it was the already established

:16:42.:16:47.

links with the people of Kenya and Malawi that helped secure the

:16:47.:16:56.

prestigious honour. The joy of discovering a new sport,

:16:56.:17:01.

on pitches built by Bristol students. It is all thanks to a new

:17:01.:17:05.

partnership between the City and Kenya, one which hopes to give

:17:05.:17:09.

these villagers a future as well as the trip of a lifetime for the

:17:09.:17:13.

students. I think I have sort of become a bit more responsible. I

:17:13.:17:19.

have got a bit more confident -- a lot more confident in myself. Yes,

:17:19.:17:26.

they have definitely changed me. Bob Reeves set up the Bristol-

:17:26.:17:30.

Kenyan partnership after years of organising trips there. The Kenyans,

:17:30.:17:36.

led by a double Olympic gold winner, have become firm friends of Bristol.

:17:36.:17:41.

It was Bob's phone call which earned at Bristol the UK's first

:17:41.:17:45.

training camp agreement. He said, nobody has approached us with

:17:45.:17:50.

anything like this, in the past, people have said, come and use our

:17:50.:17:54.

facilities, and that has been it. He said, I liked the idea of

:17:54.:18:00.

engaging people more. University of Gloucestershire also

to have some friends coming over. That makes us excited. With strong

:18:42.:18:47.

friendships already building, there athletes can expect great support

:18:47.:18:55.

here and from those watching back home.

:18:55.:18:59.

The Bath-based bobsleigh competitor Serita Shone will have a second

:18:59.:19:03.

operation on her back tomorrow as she continues her recovery from an

:19:03.:19:09.

accident during practice in Germany. She had bones in her back pinned in

:19:09.:19:12.

operation last Wednesday. She has feeling and movement in her legs,

:19:12.:19:16.

but officials say it is too early to say how complete her recovery

:19:16.:19:21.

will be. We are in regular contact with officials in Germany and we

:19:21.:19:26.

will bring you details of Serita's progress.

:19:26.:19:31.

Let's hope it goes well. Joy Adamson is perhaps best known

:19:31.:19:35.

as a conservationist and as the inspiration for the Oscar-winning

:19:35.:19:41.

movie Born Free, about the orphaned lion S Else, but she was also a

:19:41.:19:46.

talented artist. Now a selection of her watercolours, which have been

:19:46.:19:51.

hidden in a vault in Cheltenham for four decades, is going on display.

:19:51.:19:59.

Joy Adamson, with the lion that was such a passion in her life. The

:19:59.:20:04.

book Born Free told the story of the lion cub Else and it was made

:20:04.:20:09.

into an award-winning film, but Joy was also an excellent artist and

:20:09.:20:14.

some of her paintings, in storage for decades, are now on show.

:20:14.:20:20.

would have liked to see them, and the fact her work had lived on. I

:20:20.:20:26.

don't think that she realised just how good she was. The exhibition

:20:26.:20:32.

celebrates the 50 years since the book Born Free was published. It's

:20:32.:20:36.

hoped the exhibition will help the Else Conservation Trust, set up by

:20:36.:20:40.

Joy, and it is helping with the plight of the African lion. Also

:20:40.:20:45.

working for the trust is John Rendall, now a YouTube phenomenon,

:20:45.:20:50.

with millions watching the moment he was reunited with a lie-in he

:20:50.:20:55.

had once owned. The awareness out there of that wonderful lion, but

:20:55.:20:59.

also the increased awareness that it helps us to promote the dangers

:20:59.:21:06.

and threats to the environment today, so much so that we wouldn't

:21:06.:21:10.

have been able to imagine the crisis situation with wildlife

today, but they were the first ones to flag it up 50 years ago.

paintings on show at 80 -- Ellenborough Park until next

:21:20.:21:24.

Tuesday. They are beautiful. I don't know if

:21:24.:21:29.

my car is on the blink, but it's the monitor said 16 degrees today.

:21:29.:21:33.

That's hotter than some days in August!

:21:33.:21:37.

If it is, mind is on the blink as well, because it said similar. It

:21:37.:21:42.

has been one of the warmest Octobers in memory, with an

:21:42.:21:45.

extended feast of autumnal colour, but de landscape could well be

:21:45.:21:50.

about to change. With a last look at autumn and

details of a project you might like to get involved in, he is Jules

:21:53.:22:03.
:22:03.:22:10.

You know, I don't think I can add a lot to that, except to say that

:22:10.:22:15.

this is Stourhead. Probably the person who knows it best is its

:22:15.:22:20.

head gardener, Allen. It has been quite a nice autumn, because it has

:22:20.:22:25.

been so long, so we can enjoy it for longer. I'd get a great picture

:22:25.:22:30.

of all the seasons, and part of me moves into the next phase. I'm

:22:30.:22:34.

watching this fantastic display behind us, knowing that in three

:22:34.:22:38.

weeks there could be snow on the ground and the landscape will be a

:22:38.:22:43.

different colour. I get as excited about that and my mind wanders. I

:22:43.:22:48.

love working here but I love sharing the place. One of the ways

:22:48.:22:52.

Alan has been sharing the garden is by talking about it every year on

:22:52.:22:58.

Radio 4. Now the PM programme has commissioned a slide show of images

:22:58.:23:02.

to accompany his words. questions were geared towards the

:23:02.:23:07.

photographs as well, so it works together. I have an uncle in

:23:07.:23:10.

Trinidad who has seen the slide show, because he knew I was going

:23:10.:23:15.

to do it and my mum sent it to him. He thought it was amazing. The

:23:15.:23:19.

important thing about autumn is you do not treat it as one single day.

:23:19.:23:24.

To appreciate the qualities autumn has to offer, you have to see it

:23:24.:23:29.

arriving, see it looking its best and see it fade away. Autumn

:23:29.:23:35.

doesn't just last for a single day but a snapshot, a moment in time,

:23:35.:23:39.

like those photos, can tell us a lot about life and also the world

:23:39.:23:44.

as it exists today. That is what we would like your help with. It is

:23:44.:23:51.

for project called Britain in a Day, to help us to tell the story of

:23:51.:23:56.

Britain on a single day. Today at Stourhead, leaves change colour.

:23:56.:24:00.

Joe on the gate welcomed in more than 600 visitors. The gardening

:24:00.:24:05.

staff help keep the Laurel in good condition. That was Stourhead today,

:24:05.:24:10.

but what about yours? The day in question is Saturday November 12th.

:24:10.:24:15.

We would like you to fill more to the ordering. Talk about how you

:24:15.:24:22.

are feeling that day, described in words and pictures York November

:24:22.:24:26.

12th. It doesn't need to be professional but it should be real,

:24:26.:24:31.

honest and heartfelt. Your footage could form part of a unique film

:24:32.:24:36.

examining all aspects of British life on that day. To get involved,

:24:36.:24:41.

there is a leaflet which will tell you more. If you prefer, you can go

:24:41.:24:51.
:24:51.:24:55.

online. Get a thinking, get filming and good luck. Then I like the idea

:24:55.:24:58.

of that. We thought we would get into the

:24:58.:25:04.

Hallowe'en nude with a few pictures of these pumpkins at Bristol Zoo. -

:25:04.:25:09.

- the Hallowe'en mood. These work done by children, I

:25:09.:25:16.

think. When I did it, it was a mess. I wonder if we have evil weather

:25:16.:25:19.

spirits. Rain on the way, albeit later. I

:25:19.:25:24.

don't think it will catch all the trick or treaters out. Midweek, as

:25:24.:25:28.

we lose the chlorophyll from the leaves, we will also lose their

:25:28.:25:33.

leaves as it turns windier. For tomorrow, sunny spells and mainly

:25:33.:25:38.

dry, with light winds. A cold front on the way, introducing some heavy

:25:38.:25:43.

and squally rain from this frontal system. That is easing its way

:25:43.:25:48.

eastwards, arriving close to the borders with West Somerset, near

:25:49.:25:55.

Lynmouth now. The Met Office computer picks up nicely on the

:25:55.:25:59.

positioning of this, giving us confidence in the timing of this on

:25:59.:26:06.

its way eastwards. Gusts of 30-35 mph. Hippy rain over a short space

:26:06.:26:13.

of time, then trundling out to the east. -- heavy rain. The skies

:26:13.:26:18.

clearing but not sufficiently to give a chilly night. 8-9 Celsius.

:26:18.:26:22.

Tomorrow, we pick up on the theme of a good deal of sunshine for many

:26:22.:26:27.

of us. Overhanging cloud from that Front to start things off in

:26:27.:26:33.

Wiltshire. One or two showers. A low probability of these. Most

:26:33.:26:38.

districts dry with a fair amount of sunshine and light winds. That is

:26:38.:26:42.

how things will remain into the evening. Quite a pleasant feel for

:26:42.:26:47.

this time of year, 14 or 15 Celsius. Not so pleasant in the north-

:26:47.:26:51.

eastern parts of the US of late, with a winter storm you might have

:26:51.:26:57.

seen about. That is going out into the Atlantic. It gets modified over

:26:57.:27:02.

the Atlantic, this no threat does, but it arrives to us on Wednesday

:27:02.:27:07.

and Thursday. -- ft snow threat. The potential for some heavy rain

:27:08.:27:15.

and strong winds. This is how the graphics tend to paint that story.

:27:15.:27:19.

Temperatures still mild. The rain will arrive late on Wednesday. It

:27:19.:27:23.

will set in overnight on Thursday. Then a regime of some heavy,

:27:23.:27:30.

thundery showers on Thursday. An interlude into Friday. The good

:27:30.:27:36.
