Of good evening Tilstock welcome to points west. On the move at Honda. | :00:19. | :00:24.
A new car and 500 more jobs as the company says things are getting | :00:24. | :00:34.
better. And a jail for the illegal clampers who caused misery. The | :00:34. | :00:37.
community clubs together to give hundreds of the three Christmas | :00:37. | :00:43.
dinners. And I have been popping down Chinese to make sure I can | :00:43. | :00:53.
:00:53. | :00:58. | ||
deliver presents. -- Chenies. -- chimneys. | :00:58. | :01:04.
Christmas came early in Swindon to date at Honda. There was a bed | :01:04. | :01:10.
announcement - a 500 new jobs. The chief executive said that Honda | :01:10. | :01:20.
:01:20. | :01:21. | ||
Europe had turned the corner after supply problems earlier this year. | :01:21. | :01:26.
Amidst all the razzmatazz of the seeing the first cars of a new | :01:26. | :01:32.
generation of models a collective sigh of relief that 500 new staff | :01:32. | :01:39.
will be recruited. Absolutely fabulous news for | :01:39. | :01:47.
Swindon and all other suppliers. There have been difficult times and | :01:47. | :01:51.
people have been despondent but they will take today as a real | :01:51. | :01:57.
positive. 3,000 staff currently work on the | :01:57. | :02:03.
site and have had a tricky couple of the heels. The plant had to | :02:03. | :02:10.
close for months and 2009. Voluntary redundancy was offered to | :02:10. | :02:17.
over 1,000 staff. And then the Japanese is tsunami stopped vital | :02:17. | :02:24.
supplies getting through to the Swindon plant. In April a two-day | :02:24. | :02:31.
week was put in place. We have come out stronger and more | :02:31. | :02:39.
unified and are now looking to move forward. | :02:39. | :02:45.
Can the economic climate to sustain extra production? | :02:45. | :02:51.
It will be tough and it will not get easier across Europe. Most of | :02:51. | :02:57.
our exports go to Europe. But there are signs that even if the industry | :02:57. | :03:06.
stays flat, this is a good product. It is also good news for many other | :03:06. | :03:15.
businesses in the surrounding area. There is a knock-on effect. So it | :03:15. | :03:23.
is fabulous news for Swindon and it will give confidence to the town. | :03:23. | :03:29.
So hopes for the future rest on production of these cars. 180,000 | :03:29. | :03:35.
will be produced in this plant at next year. Just for once, reasons | :03:35. | :03:42.
to be cheerful in the economic gloom. | :03:42. | :03:47.
Young people and Weston Super Mare marched on the town hall today | :03:47. | :03:51.
demanding a change to planned council cuts. The local council | :03:51. | :03:57.
says it will cut two-thirds of the budget for youth clubs. It claims | :03:57. | :04:01.
many are unused. But that was not the view of those on the street | :04:01. | :04:08.
today. Without our youth club there is | :04:08. | :04:17.
nowhere to go when nobody to talk On a rainy night like this you do | :04:18. | :04:23.
not want to be walking about with nothing to do. | :04:23. | :04:27.
We are here to show to the council was what the youth service means to | :04:27. | :04:37.
:04:37. | :04:42. | ||
It will have an impact on people. They are becoming upset. It will | :04:42. | :04:48.
place the council under more pressure. | :04:48. | :04:57.
Soon, that pressure was being applied. | :04:57. | :05:01.
You are so worried about the older generation that you are not | :05:01. | :05:10.
thinking about the future. The council says that they would | :05:10. | :05:15.
like to keep services as they are. -- cannot afford to keep services | :05:15. | :05:22.
as they are. That view was not welcomed. | :05:22. | :05:30.
Without them, I do not know what people will do. | :05:30. | :05:34.
They do not have all the facts but we still must make sure that they | :05:34. | :05:42.
get what they need. For these youngsters, braving the | :05:42. | :05:52.
:05:52. | :05:52. | ||
rain and taking to the streets, was the only way of getting involved. | :05:52. | :05:58.
The Government launched a Positive Youth strategy today. But other | :05:58. | :06:04.
places are also slashing budgets. I spoke to a spokesperson from the | :06:04. | :06:12.
charity, United Kingdom youth, and asked if that made sense. | :06:12. | :06:18.
There are cuts all across the country. We think the Government is | :06:18. | :06:22.
correct to push for a Positive Youth agenda but they must take | :06:22. | :06:29.
more into consideration during these times. | :06:29. | :06:33.
But at the same time as you talk about involving youths in decision- | :06:33. | :06:40.
making, their services are being cut. | :06:40. | :06:43.
Absolutely. We think it is important that money spent and | :06:43. | :06:47.
youth services but if it must be limited then we must place young | :06:47. | :06:55.
people at the heart of how it is used. | :06:55. | :07:02.
You have done some research and young people are not happy. | :07:02. | :07:07.
They find this a depressing time to be young. Not much hope for the | :07:07. | :07:16.
future, not many jobs, no prospect of long-term security. | :07:16. | :07:21.
Many people watching will say that they have entertainment on a scale | :07:22. | :07:28.
that previous generations would not recognise. | :07:28. | :07:34.
It is not just about entertainment, but the possibility of looking into | :07:34. | :07:44.
their future and seeing prospects. Three men from Somerset who ran an | :07:44. | :07:48.
illegal clamping business have been sentenced to a total of 10 years in | :07:48. | :07:54.
jail. Drivers who had their cars pounded by a -- impounded were told | :07:54. | :08:02.
that they must pay up to 500 each to get them back. Carlton Williams, | :08:02. | :08:07.
police stack, and Michael Rattle. They intimidated and exploited | :08:07. | :08:11.
motorists across the West Country. They were part of the clamping | :08:12. | :08:17.
company who went beyond the boundaries of the acceptable and | :08:17. | :08:20.
even though it legal. The prosecution today accused them of | :08:20. | :08:26.
blackmail. Day and night they would lay in wait specialising in | :08:26. | :08:32.
targeting all there will motorists. Often mothers with children. -- | :08:32. | :08:39.
vulnerable motorists. Their fees were eye watering. Up to 500, | :08:39. | :08:45.
always in cash. This army major was a victim. She was visiting a | :08:45. | :08:53.
relative when her car was clamped and lifted. | :08:53. | :08:58.
She reflected on being told that she would only get her car by could | :08:58. | :09:07.
she paid 500 in cash. I explained I was just back from a | :09:07. | :09:11.
tour of duty and all my military equipment was in the car. They | :09:12. | :09:21.
:09:22. | :09:23. | ||
laughed and said, yeah, really! We get told the stories all the time. | :09:23. | :09:27.
They were jailed today after the judge said that the exploited | :09:27. | :09:31.
considerable sums with their bullying and aggressive behaviour. | :09:31. | :09:37.
The boss of the company also admitted benefit fraud of up to | :09:37. | :09:44.
42,000. He was jailed for 5 1/2 years. His partner, a three-year | :09:44. | :09:54.
:09:54. | :09:56. | ||
term. And the employee, 18 months. I have known them for a number of | :09:56. | :10:00.
years and was shocked at the way they have treated people. They have | :10:00. | :10:10.
bully people into handing over lots of money for their own property. | :10:10. | :10:19.
Tonight the men began jail terms There are just six nights until | :10:19. | :10:24.
Christmas. Most of the children have finished school and you have | :10:24. | :10:28.
got the team here to keep you company throughout the week. Coming | :10:28. | :10:38.
:10:38. | :10:48. | ||
up: some of the world's rarest of birds, newly arrived at Slimbridge. | :10:48. | :10:51.
And they certainly know it is Christmas - how the staff at | :10:51. | :11:01.
Patchway Community College marked Six men accused of killing a | :11:01. | :11:05.
Cheltenham man in India five years ago have been acquitted. Stephen | :11:05. | :11:11.
Bennett was travelling to mum by when he was killed. The family have | :11:11. | :11:14.
always claimed that the investigation was flawed from the | :11:14. | :11:22.
beginning. When Stephen Bennett lost his life in this remote Indian | :11:22. | :11:28.
village -- why he lost his life has been a mystery. But his family knew | :11:28. | :11:32.
that he was worried about a criminal gang who had been | :11:32. | :11:36.
threatening him. He left a chilling message on their answerphone days | :11:36. | :11:46.
:11:46. | :12:01. | ||
The police case was that Stephen had tried to attacked a woman. | :12:01. | :12:07.
Other villagers then killed him and hung him from a tree. But during | :12:07. | :12:10.
the trial of five men charged the key witness statement was thrown | :12:10. | :12:17.
out of course because it did not match forensic evidence. Stephen's | :12:17. | :12:20.
parents also sent an affidavit to the judge claiming that the killing | :12:20. | :12:30.
:12:30. | :12:31. | ||
was more sinister. Since the very beginning it has | :12:31. | :12:36.
been smoke screens, nonsense, changing of evidence, changing of | :12:36. | :12:45.
witnesses, even people not bothering to turn up. | :12:45. | :12:51.
The family want in the possmac Central Bureau of Investigation to | :12:51. | :13:01.
:13:01. | :13:15. | ||
The appeal will at long delays to the family's search for the truth, | :13:16. | :13:25.
:13:26. | :13:26. | ||
Of 48-year-old Michael Westbrook was a man did in custody this | :13:26. | :13:29.
warning. If he is accused of stabbing a woman at the weekend. | :13:29. | :13:33.
She is in hospital with serious injuries and he will appear in the | :13:33. | :13:36.
crown court in the New Year. The lorry driver killed in the | :13:36. | :13:40.
crash on the M5 in Gloucestershire has been named. Peter Marlow, who | :13:40. | :13:43.
was 55 and from Clutton near Bristol, was driving this Royal | :13:43. | :13:49.
Mail lorry. It was in collision with two other lorries and two cars. | :13:49. | :13:52.
The motorway was closed at junction 11 for Cheltenham for 11 hours. | :13:52. | :13:55.
Gloucestershire police said a sudden change in the weather was a | :13:55. | :14:01.
factor in the crash. The special programme about Stokes | :14:01. | :14:04.
Croft in Bristol is on tonight. Earlier this year, there was | :14:04. | :14:07.
serious disorder in the area sparked by the local opposition to | :14:07. | :14:12.
the opening of a Tesco store. This weekend, volunteers wanting to | :14:12. | :14:16.
retain the character of the area opened arrivals people's | :14:16. | :14:24.
supermarket. It is a bit of a food desert here. We will be bringing in | :14:24. | :14:29.
fresh fruit and veg from local community farms and growing produce | :14:29. | :14:33.
round the outskirts of Bristol and making it as cheap as possible. It | :14:33. | :14:39.
will be not for profit. To see more, that programme starts | :14:39. | :14:42.
at 7:30pm here on BBC One. Charities that provide vital food | :14:42. | :14:45.
supplies for people in the West say more and more people are calling on | :14:45. | :14:48.
them for help. As Christmas approaches, one food bank in | :14:48. | :14:50.
Trowbridge has found that as demand is increasing, perhaps surprisingly, | :14:50. | :14:53.
given the current economic situation, so is supply. | :14:53. | :15:03.
:15:03. | :15:03. | ||
Julia Causton has been along to find out more. We were delivering | :15:03. | :15:07.
parcels last year and one came to the door and she was quite | :15:07. | :15:11.
overwhelmed by the parcel that she got. Her little boy came along and | :15:11. | :15:14.
he then said that we're going to look like everyone else at | :15:14. | :15:17.
Christmas. Here in Trowbridge, they're | :15:17. | :15:20.
stuffing sacks for a very different kind of Santa. This Christmas, many | :15:20. | :15:23.
families are finding it hard to buy presents, but some are struggling | :15:23. | :15:30.
to buy Christmas lunch. We make up a food bag that contains | :15:30. | :15:34.
enough food for Christmas Day, so you have crackers, sweets, | :15:34. | :15:39.
cranberry sauce, stuffing, serviettes, everything. Everything | :15:39. | :15:42.
is in the bag. Those behind the foodbank say she's | :15:42. | :15:45.
seen a noticeable increase in the number of people living on the | :15:45. | :15:47.
breadline While foodbanks are not new, the | :15:47. | :15:57.
:15:57. | :16:02. | ||
500 people, belief we have provided for more than 4,500 people. It is | :16:02. | :16:09.
the 25% increase to what we had last year coming up for Christmas. | :16:09. | :16:13.
Traditional food Bank elections in our supermarkets are not new. The | :16:13. | :16:15.
national Tressell Trust Foodbank Network, which started in Wiltshire, | :16:15. | :16:19.
says at the start of this year it was opening one new bank a week. | :16:19. | :16:22.
While many more are asking for help, many more are also prepared to give | :16:22. | :16:32.
You realise there are some not so fortunate people as us. It would | :16:32. | :16:37.
enable them to enjoy Christmas Day. We thought that foodbank was very | :16:37. | :16:41.
worthy of our support. It helps our local people in our local | :16:41. | :16:45.
communities. If we all have lovely things at Christmas. They hardly | :16:45. | :16:49.
have anything. I think it is really good that we're given to people who | :16:49. | :16:53.
do not have thought we'd do. So while the economic forecast is | :16:53. | :16:56.
gloomy, the foodbank here is, for now, managing to stay in the black | :16:56. | :17:06.
:17:06. | :17:09. | ||
and give at least a little bit of Christmas cheer. | :17:09. | :17:12.
Is it turkey or goose for you this year? | :17:12. | :17:22.
:17:22. | :17:22. | ||
Everything in lashings! A captive breeding programme has | :17:22. | :17:25.
started in Gloucestershire to try to save some of the world's rarest | :17:25. | :17:28.
birds. There are fewer than 200 spoon-billed sandpipers left in the | :17:28. | :17:30.
wild. Now 13 of them are being given a | :17:30. | :17:32.
new home at the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust in Slimbridge. | :17:33. | :17:39.
Victoria Gill reports. This is a site that very few people | :17:39. | :17:44.
have witnessed. And spoon-billed sandpipers in the wild. It is | :17:44. | :17:48.
rapidly ran gnashing. -- vanishing. These birds are run the very brink | :17:48. | :17:54.
of extinction. This team are here to help. Here in Gloucestershire, | :17:54. | :17:59.
conservationists have spent six months carefully preparing this | :17:59. | :18:01.
purpose-built to Avery for a captive breeding programme that | :18:01. | :18:09.
they hope will save the species. There are 13 birds here and they | :18:09. | :18:13.
represent 5% of the entire world population of spoon-billed | :18:13. | :18:18.
sandpipers. They have been on a very long journey to get here. It | :18:18. | :18:22.
began on the remote tundra of Far East Russia. The birds nesting | :18:22. | :18:27.
grounds. In this forbidding expands, the team managed to collect 20 tiny | :18:27. | :18:35.
eggs. They hatched on board a ship and 13 of the birds are now it | :18:35. | :18:42.
finally safely in their new UK home. The birds that we have here could | :18:42. | :18:48.
be the saviours of the species. There are a lot of things to sort | :18:48. | :18:51.
out and nature and we do not think we have the time to do that. This | :18:52. | :18:56.
is an insurance against extinction. It will buy us time to sort out | :18:56. | :19:01.
those problems. Now that they are in their new Avery, the hope is | :19:01. | :19:04.
that these few birds will be the start of a breeding programme which | :19:05. | :19:11.
will prevent this unusual little bird from being lost forever. | :19:11. | :19:14.
Former Gloucester and England rugby legend Phil Vickery has taken his | :19:14. | :19:19.
first steps into coaching. He is, of course, also the winner of | :19:19. | :19:21.
Celebrity MasterChef and he's joined Cinderford rugby club as a | :19:21. | :19:23.
consultant, teaming up with his former Gloucester colleague Andy | :19:23. | :19:29.
Deacon. His first chance to pass on the knowledge gained in a long | :19:29. | :19:34.
career came on Saturday as his new club secured a convincing win. | :19:34. | :19:37.
73 England caps, 145 appearances for Gloucester and Celebrity | :19:37. | :19:45.
MasterChef, now coach. Cinderford is where Phil Vickery has chosen to | :19:45. | :19:54.
try his hand at another career. It is exciting. I was quite nervous | :19:54. | :19:58.
this morning coming into a club, not knowing too many of the players. | :19:58. | :20:02.
He is here to help the team but clearly he has a commercial value. | :20:02. | :20:07.
Fingers crossed he has the benefit for both. He has the experience he | :20:07. | :20:14.
can pass on. I hope he will inspire the lads to get some results. | :20:14. | :20:19.
Cinderford play in the National League One - two leagues below the | :20:19. | :20:23.
Premiership. Vickery is joining up with old friend and former | :20:23. | :20:29.
Gloucester colleague, Andy Deacon. He has done it all and he is an | :20:29. | :20:35.
iconic figure. He gives a lift to the club. | :20:35. | :20:42.
The game went well with a convincing win. | :20:42. | :20:47.
It just made sense. I want to be involved in the game. I want to get | :20:47. | :20:51.
back in touch with that. I have been out of it for 12 months. I | :20:51. | :20:54.
have other commitments and it just seemed a very natural progression | :20:54. | :21:00.
for me. I am wanted here and I want to be here. I hope I can help the | :21:00. | :21:03.
team. So will he be popping into the | :21:03. | :21:08.
kitchen and passing on a bit of advice there? | :21:08. | :21:14.
They are more than well-equipped! I will take a very much a back seat! | :21:14. | :21:16.
The move to coaching isn't easy, but both Cinderford and Phil | :21:16. | :21:19.
Vickery are hoping this experience is a recipe for success for club | :21:19. | :21:29.
:21:29. | :21:32. | ||
and coach. It is perhaps the greatest delivery | :21:32. | :21:36.
operation in history - Santa's one night whizz around the world. We | :21:36. | :21:40.
may never know exactly how he manages it, but we do know his | :21:40. | :21:46.
favourite way of actually delivering presents. | :21:46. | :21:51.
It is, of course, access via chimney. With a quick stop off for | :21:51. | :21:55.
mince pies. But for one young boy from the Cotswolds, the chimney | :21:55. | :22:01.
delivery was a little bit of a worry. Here's Jules Hyam. | :22:01. | :22:05.
Six days to go! Across the land, children aged six to 60 can and | :22:05. | :22:12.
sometimes do get rather over excited. But one young man, Leo, | :22:12. | :22:14.
aged six, was getting very concerned that Santa wouldn't fit | :22:14. | :22:24.
:22:24. | :22:30. | ||
down his chimney. So with Leo's letter asking him for | :22:30. | :22:33.
help, Mr Paxton the housebuilder got in touch with Alan the | :22:33. | :22:43.
:22:43. | :22:45. | ||
Architect and he contacted the North Pole. Leo spotted that Santa | :22:45. | :22:49.
is not exactly... Let's just say that 12 million mince pies in one | :22:49. | :22:54.
evening does take its toll. With his plea for help, this is what | :22:54. | :23:00.
happened. The House builder got in touch with the architect -- | :23:00. | :23:04.

What came back was the work of genius maths elves. | :23:17. | :23:20.
So with the secretes of the chimney risk factor formula, Mr Paxton the | :23:20. | :23:30.
:23:30. | :23:31. | ||
Housebuilder set about building Leo a chimney. Will this actually work? | :23:31. | :23:37.
They're going to put it to the test, using a crane and Santa. | :23:38. | :23:40.
And there he is, demonstrating rather elegantly for young Leo that | :23:40. | :23:43.
a nice wide and open chimney will indeed accommodate Santa, with | :23:43. | :23:48.
plenty of spare room for presents. Yep, I know it's pretty funny, but | :23:48. | :23:58.
:23:58. | :24:03. | ||
Santa's a funny kind of a guy! give him a big hug! So, the perfect | :24:03. | :24:07.
to me for Santa. Even if he does have a chimney, he can still | :24:07. | :24:12.
deliver presents, as long as you have been good. If there isn't a | :24:12. | :24:16.
tinny, we can miniaturise. It takes a little time, but it is well worth | :24:16. | :24:21.
it. But I also carry a magic key to be able to get into most of the | :24:21. | :24:24.
homes. And that, ladies and gentlemen, is | :24:24. | :24:27.
how he does it, though I'm sure he's got a few other secret | :24:27. | :24:37.
techniques up his rather large sleeves. | :24:37. | :24:41.
That was adorable! Now, when the pupils at Patchway | :24:41. | :24:44.
Community College near Bristol broke up for the Christmas holidays, | :24:44. | :24:48.
their teachers had a very special treat planned for them. | :24:48. | :24:56.
And they couldn't resist sharing it with us. Take a look at this. | :24:56. | :25:06.
:25:06. | :25:32. | ||
It is a Christmas number one I think! | :25:32. | :25:37.
Do you reckon? I wish my teachers had done that if let us take a look | :25:37. | :25:42.
at the weather. Ian's got the sniffles. I'm sure he said Man Flu. | :25:42. | :25:44.
sniffles. I'm sure he said Man Flu. So here's Shefali Oza with this | :25:44. | :25:53.
evening's forecast. The key features of the week will | :25:53. | :25:56.
be a milder feel to things and some periods of rain. We saw the first | :25:56. | :26:00.
band of rain go through today, which give us some heavier | :26:00. | :26:05.
outbreaks. We have a series of fronts stacking up on the Atlantic. | :26:05. | :26:08.
The winds are going to temporarily deviate to north-westerly tonight, | :26:08. | :26:12.
but the main thrust of the wins will be from the south-west. That | :26:12. | :26:16.
is why we're getting a rise in temperatures. Around coastal areas | :26:16. | :26:21.
of the next 18 hours, the Windsor quite strong. West to North-West | :26:21. | :26:27.
and moderate to rough seas will be the result. For the rest of us, it | :26:27. | :26:32.
is dry. It will be quite mild compared to recent nights. Lows of | :26:32. | :26:37.
five Celsius. Tomorrow morning, the cloud breaks up nicely towards the | :26:37. | :26:43.
East. Gradually, the cloud starts to climb in from the West ahead of | :26:43. | :26:46.
the next system that will come in tomorrow evening. It should stay | :26:46. | :26:52.
dry during daylight hours and when it turns dark, but temperatures | :26:52. | :26:57.
from 69 Celsius. It is another mild says. That cloud and that rain | :26:57. | :27:01.
starts to move even further eastwards to Marmite. You can see | :27:01. | :27:06.
from the darker colours that they will be quite heavy. That clears | :27:06. | :27:10.
off to the North East towards the end of the night, leaving all parts | :27:10. | :27:15.
dried by then. Again, it is mild. The Rangers clears the north- | :27:15. | :27:20.
eastern corner on Wednesday morning, a leading light cloud and mist and | :27:20. | :27:23.
hill fog. Other than that, some outbreaks of rain on Thursday and | :27:24. | :27:31. |
