Good evening, and welcome to BBC Points West. Our headlines tonight:

:00:14.:00:18.

The carer who could not cope. Jail today for the husband who killed

:00:18.:00:24.

his wife of 58 years after a decade of nursing her alone.

:00:24.:00:27.

Guilty as charged - the broadcaster Peter Rowell admits a string of

:00:27.:00:31.

sexual assaults against teenage girls.

:00:31.:00:34.

Vowing to get their money back - couples who lost their weddings

:00:34.:00:43.

when the business went bust meet the bosses.

:00:43.:00:48.

Any comments about what has happened? No comments. What can you

:00:48.:00:52.

say to the creditors? I have said everything to the creditors that I

:00:52.:00:54.

need to. And, now it's official - a judge

:00:54.:01:03.

tells the College Green Occupiers Good evening.

:01:03.:01:06.

A pensioner from Somerset who "snapped" and killed his wife of 58

:01:06.:01:11.

years has been sent to jail for 12 months. Malcolm Beardon, from

:01:11.:01:13.

Wellington, had been caring for his childhood sweetheart Margaret for

:01:13.:01:19.

over a decade. She had dementia, and the court

:01:19.:01:22.

heard he lost control. Today the judge at Exeter Crown

:01:22.:01:25.

Court said to describe this case as tragic would be a significant

:01:25.:01:30.

understatement. John Maguire reports.

:01:30.:01:33.

They were barely into their 20s when Malcolm and Margaret became

:01:33.:01:38.

man and wife. This was their home in Wellington for 50 years. They

:01:38.:01:43.

brought up a family here. The house is immaculate. Mr and Mrs Beardon

:01:43.:01:47.

were devoted to each other, and for the past decade he had been her

:01:47.:01:51.

full time carer. But dementia took hold. She no longer recognised her

:01:52.:01:59.

home, her family, her husband, and, last July, he snapped. At a

:01:59.:02:01.

previous hearing, the court was told that 79-year-old Malcolm

:02:01.:02:06.

Beardon lost control that night as he gently strangled his wife. He

:02:06.:02:09.

rang his daughter to tell her he had murdered Margaret, but the

:02:09.:02:12.

prosecution accepted a plea of manslaughter due to the exceptional

:02:12.:02:22.
:02:22.:02:22.

circumstances. In passing sentence, the judge said that to describe

:02:22.:02:27.

this case as tragic would be a significant understatement. The

:02:27.:02:31.

principle of the sanctity of human life would be undermined, he said,

:02:31.:02:36.

if a custodial sentence was not passed. He ordered Mr Dearden to

:02:36.:02:40.

serve 12 months in jail. He had always insisted that he could cope,

:02:40.:02:42.

rejecting offers of help. But clearly he couldn't. Tonight,

:02:43.:02:52.
:02:53.:02:53.

carers are being urged not to suffer in silence. Most people

:02:53.:02:56.

don't identify themselves as carers, because why would in due care for

:02:56.:03:02.

your husband, wife, son, daughter, etc? We would like more people to

:03:02.:03:08.

identify so they can get the support they need to prevent them

:03:08.:03:10.

getting into crisis situations. Malcolm Beardon's family have

:03:10.:03:13.

supported him throughout and were in court again today. Recent months

:03:13.:03:16.

have seen them lose their mother, and now their father is in jail for

:03:16.:03:19.

something the court heard was done in a moment, without malice,

:03:19.:03:29.
:03:29.:03:30.

without motive but that will haunt Mr Beardon for the rest of his days.

:03:30.:03:32.

The well-known broadcaster Peter Rowell has admitted abusing young

:03:32.:03:36.

girls. The television and radio presenter, who is from Wickwar in

:03:36.:03:39.

South Gloucestershire, pleaded guilty to 12 charges of indecent

:03:39.:03:45.

assault on girls under the age of 16. He also admitted downloading

:03:45.:03:54.

indecent images of children. He denied a charge of rape. Our home

:03:54.:03:59.

affairs correspondent Steve Brodie was in court.

:03:59.:04:02.

He was one of the West's most well- known broadcasters, a television

:04:02.:04:05.

and radio presenter who enjoyed the limelight. But Peter Rowell had a

:04:05.:04:08.

sordid secret life, using his position to abuse and indecently

:04:08.:04:15.

assault young girls. For ten years, he worked as a newsreader on the

:04:15.:04:21.

then ITV West in Bristol, and as a DJ on GWR. In May 2010, he joined

:04:21.:04:23.

BBC Radio Bristol and BBC Somerset as the station's afternoon

:04:23.:04:32.

presenter. But now that career is over. The former presenter stood in

:04:32.:04:36.

the dock wearing a blue shirt and tie and a grey suit, accompanied by

:04:36.:04:39.

a prison officer. He replied guilty to 19 of the charges put to him by

:04:39.:04:43.

the court clerk. 12 of them were for indecent assaults on girls

:04:43.:04:46.

under the age of 16. He also admitted six charges of downloading

:04:46.:04:52.

indecent pictures of children, and one charge of possessing them. It

:04:52.:04:56.

was in March last year that Peter Rowell hit the headlines. He had

:04:56.:04:59.

disappeared from his home in Wickwar, in South Gloucestershire.

:04:59.:05:02.

At the time, it was thought he was depressed over the death of his

:05:02.:05:05.

father. After a police search, he eventually turned up in Cumbria,

:05:05.:05:11.

and within days was arrested and charged with sex offences. Police

:05:11.:05:15.

had already raided his home and seized his computer. On it, more

:05:16.:05:21.

than 400 indecent images of children. Bristol Crown Court heard

:05:21.:05:24.

that had Rowell not pleaded guilty, five victims would have given

:05:24.:05:27.

evidence against him, detailing how he assaulted them as young girls

:05:27.:05:34.

between 1989 and 1995. Tonight, both the BBC and ITV refused to

:05:34.:05:38.

comment. The young people's charity The Prince's Trust, where Rowell

:05:38.:05:42.

was a patron, said they were very shocked to hear the charges. They

:05:42.:05:45.

said Peter Rowell has supported the charity at fundraising events, but

:05:45.:05:47.

had no direct involvement in running their courses with young

:05:47.:05:56.

people. Adjourning the case until March, Judge David Ticehurst told

:05:56.:05:59.

Rowell it was only right that his victims could have the opportunity

:05:59.:06:05.

to see him sentenced. Couples who lost thousands of

:06:05.:06:07.

pounds when a Bristol wedding firm stopped trading came face-to-face

:06:07.:06:12.

with the company directors today. Aspire Venues has now officially

:06:12.:06:16.

gone into liquidation. It had run into financial difficulties last

:06:16.:06:21.

summer but continued to take money from customers. It now owes almost

:06:21.:06:30.

1.5 million. Sabet Choudhury reports.

:06:30.:06:36.

Completely angry. Upset, this is our wedding. Wedding is a once-in-

:06:36.:06:41.

a-lifetime, she has been planning it all of her life, since she was a

:06:41.:06:46.

girl, and it has been ruined. partner is due to give birth two

:06:46.:06:52.

weeks before, so it has caused loads of stress to us as a family.

:06:52.:06:58.

Can we ask how much money you are owed? I am owed for grand. Two-and-

:06:58.:07:02.

a-half 1,000. Everyone at the meeting today had a story of loss,

:07:02.:07:06.

totalling 1.5 million. One of the grooms most affected is Paul. His

:07:06.:07:10.

wedding collapsed when Aspire stopped trading before Christmas.

:07:10.:07:19.

He had paid in full, 8,300. It is a lot of money, and obviously no

:07:19.:07:23.

one can afford to lose that amount of money. It left us in an awkward

:07:23.:07:27.

position, and with a bitter taste in our mouths, kind of thing. Your

:07:27.:07:32.

wedding is a special day to everyone involved. Obviously

:07:32.:07:36.

rearranging a venue at short notice, especially in the heart of summer,

:07:36.:07:39.

is not easy. Leaving the meeting, Aspire's directors did not want to

:07:39.:07:46.

speak to us today. Any comments about what has happened? No comment.

:07:46.:07:50.

What can you say to the creditors? I have said everything to them that

:07:50.:07:54.

I need to. But they told the meeting the company had run into

:07:54.:07:56.

difficulties with the costs of renovating and buying their

:07:56.:08:05.

properties, and they had also lost a lucrative contract. It is whether

:08:05.:08:09.

we decide to put something in the middle of the stairway... For some

:08:09.:08:12.

couples, though, there is hope. This is Eastington Park, near

:08:12.:08:15.

Stroud, one of the venues Aspire used. And here a new wedding

:08:15.:08:18.

business is starting. The owner of the building has stepped in and is

:08:18.:08:24.

taking on Aspire's bookings. I do believe that we have got 21, 22

:08:24.:08:27.

readings of the 35 that were originally booked through a spire.

:08:27.:08:33.

We will be running those, mostly, at an absolute loss -- booked

:08:33.:08:38.

through Aspire Venues. But the owner and myself want to honour

:08:38.:08:42.

these weddings. Good news for couples like Richard Howe and Amy

:08:42.:08:44.

White, who thought their dream wedding at Eastington was off. But

:08:44.:08:48.

now it is back on. Although that's no comfort for the couples left out

:08:48.:08:51.

in the cold today. They are not likely to get their money back

:08:51.:08:56.

unless they are insured or paid on a credit card.

:08:56.:08:58.

With me is Phil Parkyn, the principal Trading Standards officer

:08:58.:09:06.

for Bristol City Council. This is heartbreaking, young

:09:06.:09:10.

couples saving up, many so tight, and now they have lost it. What are

:09:10.:09:15.

the chances of getting some of the cashback? Very unlikely unless they

:09:15.:09:19.

have wedding insurance or paid on credit card. My heart goes out to

:09:19.:09:22.

these people, my daughter is getting married this year, it has

:09:22.:09:28.

been a steep learning curve, a very expensive business. There are

:09:28.:09:31.

basically two ways in which consumers can protect themselves.

:09:31.:09:36.

If they pay for any part of the then new deposit contract using a

:09:36.:09:42.

credit card, a credit card, not a credit card cheques, not cash, not

:09:42.:09:47.

transfer, not a debit card, with a credit card, they are automatically

:09:47.:09:51.

covered by section 75 of the consumer act. Your contract is with

:09:51.:09:57.

the credit card company? Absolutely. Theoretically, because of that

:09:57.:10:01.

liability, the credit card company could pick up the bill for the cost

:10:01.:10:05.

of the breach of contracts with the ancillary suppliers because a

:10:05.:10:09.

wedding is an incredibly complicated thing, you have

:10:09.:10:14.

caterers, dress manufacturers, cake makers. A huge number of people

:10:14.:10:18.

involved, lots of contracts. However, when you are looking at

:10:18.:10:23.

consequential loss, it can get really, really complicated and my

:10:23.:10:27.

advice to consumers would be to take out wedding insurance. You can

:10:27.:10:31.

get a good policy, I insured my daughter's wedding for less than

:10:31.:10:38.

60. I got comprehensive insurance for the venue, caterers going bust,

:10:38.:10:41.

the car company running out of petrol on the way. It does not

:10:41.:10:46.

cover the groom running off or the Bride getting cold feet, but I

:10:46.:10:51.

would advise people to look at that, shop around for policies. It is

:10:51.:10:55.

another expense but might be worth it? The average cost of a wedding

:10:55.:11:00.

is between 15 and 18,000, I had mine does not cost that much, but

:11:00.:11:06.

it is small fry a compared with that. I will have to stop you there,

:11:06.:11:10.

but thank you Deryn much indeed. I hope everything goes well with your

:11:10.:11:14.

daughter's wedding. Police are investigating claims

:11:14.:11:17.

that a man with restricted growth was attacked while celebrating his

:11:17.:11:20.

birthday in Somerset, leaving him with back injuries. Martin

:11:20.:11:23.

Henderson was outside the White Horse pub in Wincanton when it

:11:23.:11:29.

happened. He says he was picked up and dropped on the ground by an

:11:29.:11:32.

unknown attacker. He believes the assault was prompted by stories

:11:32.:11:42.

about so-called "dwarf throwing" during the Rugby World Cup.

:11:42.:11:46.

It made me feel as if we are a target now, after the would be

:11:46.:11:54.

World Cup, and we shouldn't be. -- of the Rugby World Cup. We wish to

:11:54.:11:59.

be left alone, as we are just normal humans, except we suffer

:11:59.:12:03.

from a different condition. Mr Henderson's attacker is

:12:03.:12:06.

described as a slim man who was wearing a hooded top and baseball

:12:06.:12:09.

cap. Police are appealing for any witnesses.

:12:09.:12:11.

A judge has ruled that the Occupy Bristol protesters should be

:12:11.:12:16.

evicted from the city's College Green.

:12:16.:12:18.

But after the ruling was made this morning, some campaigners refused

:12:18.:12:22.

to leave the courtroom, saying they challenge the court's authority.

:12:22.:12:26.

James Hassam is at the protest site for us tonight. James, are they

:12:27.:12:36.
:12:37.:12:38.

staying or going? After almost 30 days here, this

:12:38.:12:41.

site's days are numbered. The Occupy Bristol protesters told the

:12:41.:12:47.

BBC they would clear this camp, where there are around 30p, with in

:12:47.:12:52.

two weeks. It came after a bizarre day at Bristol County Court where a

:12:52.:12:57.

judge agreed with the council and the Church's view that the

:12:57.:13:01.

protesters should be moved on. A small group of them disagreed, and

:13:01.:13:06.

staged a protest, and occupation of the court room itself. They were

:13:06.:13:11.

eventually moved on, and they said to us later on that, like the Dean

:13:11.:13:14.

and the council, they regret that this was not resolved through

:13:14.:13:17.

discussion but confirmed they will move on within two week.

:13:17.:13:23.

Will this be the end of the movement in Bristol?

:13:23.:13:27.

No is the short answer to that. Not according to the protesters, they

:13:27.:13:31.

say they have plans to move on somewhere else and will release

:13:31.:13:35.

details to us next week. You can find out more details about this

:13:35.:13:40.

whole situation on this weekend's Sunday politics on BBC One at

:13:40.:13:50.

midday. Yes, our new weekly political

:13:50.:13:52.

programme, Sunday Politics, is on air this weekend. Among the guests

:13:52.:13:55.

are the Dean of Bristol Cathedral and one of the Occupy protesters.

:13:55.:13:59.

They are joined by two of our local MPs as we discuss capitalism and

:13:59.:14:02.

bankers. We are also talking about the coffee shops that are opening

:14:02.:14:04.

without planning permission. That is the new Sunday Politics with me

:14:05.:14:10.

and Andrew Neil, and it starts at Now sport.

:14:10.:14:14.

Bristol City's manager has started to make his moves in the transfer

:14:14.:14:17.

market. His side are back in League action tomorrow, and there could be

:14:17.:14:20.

a couple of debuts. Alistair is here.

:14:20.:14:23.

Derek McInnes is finally getting a chance to mould his own side at

:14:23.:14:26.

Bristol City. We're almost midway through the January transfer window,

:14:26.:14:30.

and he's made three signings so far, with a wish list of more players to

:14:30.:14:33.

come. Striker Chris Wood, a New Zealand international, became the

:14:33.:14:37.

latest arrival yesterday. He should be in the side at Brighton tomorrow.

:14:37.:14:41.

Geoff Twentyman has been to Ashton Gate to see how City are

:14:41.:14:51.
:14:51.:14:52.

progressing. Of I think we picked up and 21,

:14:52.:14:58.

from 36 points in the league, which is a decent return, but we have got

:14:58.:15:03.

to try and keep on working to that standard. The signs are there that

:15:03.:15:07.

we are improving. Derek McInnes has been in charge for 13 league games.

:15:07.:15:11.

Six wins, four defeats and three draws have moved City off the

:15:11.:15:14.

bottom of the table to 19th, three points above the relegation trap

:15:14.:15:22.

door. I expect the two recent signings will debut tomorrow. West

:15:22.:15:24.

Brom striker Chris Wood, a New Zealand international, scored 10

:15:24.:15:28.

goals in 28 games whilst on loan at Birmingham this season. Defender

:15:28.:15:32.

Richard Foster was captain at Aberdeen. And gained Champions

:15:33.:15:40.

League experience whilst on loan at Rangers.

:15:41.:15:45.

Obviously there are a lot of games coming up thick and fast. Through

:15:45.:15:51.

February. Then we can take stock and see where we are in the lead.

:15:51.:15:55.

Every week, there is a team in the bottom half which beats a team in

:15:55.:16:00.

the top half. I have to come and prove myself. There are a lot of

:16:00.:16:06.

other very good strikers. I have to do my job and score goals and work

:16:06.:16:13.

well with everybody up front with me. Derek McInnes is starting to

:16:13.:16:18.

shake the squad his way. Two new signings this week. If they can

:16:18.:16:25.

repeat their past form, they will be absolutely fine. Don't expect

:16:25.:16:28.

champagne football, expect winning football.

:16:28.:16:32.

The rest of the weekend's games are coming on the screen now. Bristol

:16:32.:16:36.

Rovers will go into their match with top of the table Crawley still

:16:36.:16:38.

searching for a new manager. Today, Burton's Paul Peschisolido

:16:38.:16:42.

turned down the chance of an interview for the job. He said he

:16:42.:16:47.

was "flattered" but had politely declined the request. His Burton

:16:47.:16:51.

side are currently just outside the League Two play-off places. Rovers

:16:51.:17:00.

have been without a manager since Paul Buckle was sacked ten days ago.

:17:00.:17:04.

Rugby, and nothing but a win will do for Gloucester in the Heineken

:17:04.:17:07.

Cup at Harlequins. They're currently third in their pool, and

:17:07.:17:10.

only the group winners are guaranteed a place in the quarter-

:17:10.:17:13.

finals. Bath's chance has gone, but a win in Montpellier tomorrow

:17:13.:17:16.

lunchtime could still help them qualify for the Amlin Challenge Cup,

:17:16.:17:22.

Europe's second tier competition. After a career-changing 2011, Judd

:17:22.:17:25.

Trump is hoping to further enhance his reputation over the next week

:17:25.:17:30.

in snooker's prestigious Masters tournament. The Bristolian won two

:17:31.:17:34.

major titles last year, and reached the final of the World

:17:34.:17:39.

Championships at the Crucible. He heads to Alexandra Palace for the

:17:39.:17:47.

Masters, ranked as the fifth best player in the world.

:17:47.:17:51.

Everyone is expecting a lot more of May, there is a bit more pressure

:17:51.:17:56.

on me. I going and take one game at a time. If I played close to my

:17:56.:18:01.

best I have a good chance of winning. I don't want to settle for

:18:01.:18:07.

one or two tournaments, I want to get to 25 tournament wins. I have

:18:07.:18:12.

to kick around it, keep on working and improving. And, hopefully, I

:18:12.:18:17.

can dominate the game. He Judd's first round match in the

:18:17.:18:24.

Masters is against Stuart Bingham on Monday.

:18:24.:18:31.

Did tournament starts on Sunday. It is the live on BBC Two. Now, have a

:18:31.:18:36.

listen to next piece of music. It's been chosen by Radio Four listeners

:18:36.:18:40.

as the nation's favourite piece of classical music: The Lark Ascending

:18:40.:18:46.

by Ralph Vaughan Williams. It has its roots right here in the west.

:18:46.:18:51.

It was first performed in Shirehampton. And now, for a BBC

:18:51.:18:54.

documentary, that original performance has been recreated.

:18:54.:19:04.
:19:04.:19:05.

Here's Jules Hyam. One of the best-loved and best-

:19:05.:19:13.

known loved pieces in classical music. You've only got to listen to

:19:13.:19:23.
:19:23.:19:26.

it, and you are listening to an angel. -- to England. The Lark

:19:26.:19:29.

Ascending has a special place in many people's hearts. It sends

:19:29.:19:32.

shivers, is still does, through me. I'm shivering even thinking about

:19:32.:19:39.

it. There are two big crescendos in it. That was the first time I think

:19:39.:19:43.

I had got a physical feeling from a bit of music. Its composer Ralph

:19:43.:19:46.

Vaughan Williams was born in Gloucestershire, and the piece

:19:46.:19:49.

itself was also born here in the west. It was played publicly for

:19:49.:19:55.

the very first time at Shirehampton Hall. It was 1920, and while he was

:19:55.:19:58.

staying at King's Weston House, Vaughan Williams worked with a

:19:58.:20:01.

young violinist spotted busking on Bristol's streets. Marie Hall was

:20:01.:20:04.

her name and, together, she and the composer reworked the original

:20:04.:20:11.

score for piano and violin. It was really designed to fit her talents.

Julia Hwang. The story of this remarkable piece is told tonight on

BBC Four, in a special programme that includes Julia's entire

performance. Here's Julia Hwang, and her violin.

Together they weaved the magic you just heard. What do you think of

it? And it is earned on her to play such a magical piece of music which

:21:11.:21:15.

perfectly portrays the beautiful English music side. It is melodic,

:21:15.:21:22.

beautiful. It is mystical. Violinists have to concentrate to

:21:22.:21:27.

capture that atmosphere to make the piece work. It is a difficult piece

:21:27.:21:34.

to play. Or is it so natural for you? It is difficult in terms of

:21:34.:21:40.

the musicality and the charity required. But the notes themselves

aren't technically demanding. more about the emotion. When you

talk about maturity, how all are you? I am 15. Is it difficult for

:21:53.:22:03.

you? I think it is important to get lots of concert experience to

:22:03.:22:07.

mature as a performer. And I am very lucky to have been given lots

:22:07.:22:13.

of opportunities to perform this piece with orchestra. We had Juliet

in the studio five years ago. Do you remember this?

:22:18.:22:27.

We thought you were excellent then. How many hours do practise a week?

:22:27.:22:32.

I tried to get an average of five hours a day. Do your parents have

:22:32.:22:41.

to nag you? My mum did have to slightly when I was younger. But

:22:41.:22:44.

nowadays, I practise because I enjoy producing music for people to

:22:44.:22:54.

listen to. And your career? I am performing now. But I would like to

:22:54.:23:01.

be a full concert performer. And give performances as a job.

will be. You are going to give us a treat now, pay us a little bit?

That is fantastic. I have never known an introduction to the
