Good evening and welcome to BBC Points West. | :00:09. | :00:14.
Our headlines tonight: The bike that could have de-railed a train. | :00:14. | :00:17.
Transport police hunt the boy who threw this cycle into the path of | :00:17. | :00:22.
an express. The Bristol City stadium - the club | :00:22. | :00:26.
says the diggers are ready to roll as the opposition loses the ball. | :00:26. | :00:30.
Also tonight: The cost of food - why more families are turning to | :00:30. | :00:40.
:00:40. | :00:42. | ||
charity larders for a meal. It was a lifeline. I don't know where we | :00:42. | :00:46.
would have been without the food bank, to be honest. | :00:46. | :00:54.
And heading home - a new base for Good evening. A train travelling at | :00:54. | :00:59.
100mph has hit a bicycle that was deliberately thrown onto the tracks. | :00:59. | :01:02.
The Transport Police say it was "mindless vandalism" which could | :01:02. | :01:06.
have caused a serious accident. Witnesses say the bike was dropped | :01:06. | :01:10.
into the path of the express train as it thundered through Yate near | :01:10. | :01:17.
Bristol. The police are looking for a teenager. Jules Hyam reports. | :01:17. | :01:21.
This is what's left of the bike thrown onto the rails from the | :01:21. | :01:25.
platform at Yate train station. Police are now searching for the | :01:25. | :01:28.
teenager whose act of vandalism could have caused much more damage | :01:28. | :01:38.
:01:38. | :01:40. | ||
to property and people. Yate is by no means the big railway station as | :01:40. | :01:45.
they are only a handful of trains that stop here, but as well as | :01:45. | :01:49.
those local trains they are high- speed express trains that whizz | :01:49. | :01:55.
through here at about 100 miles per hour. On Sunday evening, it was in | :01:55. | :02:00.
front of one of those that the bike was thrown. All those people on the | :02:00. | :02:05.
train. It could have derailed and they lost their lives. The person | :02:05. | :02:09.
that three the bike is causing problems. I think they should have | :02:09. | :02:14.
been someone here. There are always groups of youths down here with | :02:14. | :02:20.
nothing to do. He we have got CCTV here and the station is patrolled | :02:20. | :02:26.
by officers from Temple Mead, so we don't have any wider concerns, but | :02:26. | :02:29.
clearly it is something we will consider. | :02:29. | :02:32.
It is unusual, but not unique, because it is so dangerous to | :02:32. | :02:36.
obstruct train lines the penalties for doing so are harsh. | :02:36. | :02:39.
The man seen here throwing a bike onto an electric line in | :02:39. | :02:46.
Southampton last year was jailed for 12 months.. I used the | :02:46. | :02:55.
expression mindless because it is. perhaps not thought throat but | :02:56. | :02:57.
could have devastating consequences. Sgt Parker and his team are | :02:57. | :02:59.
studying CCTV footage from the station's cameras, making enquiries | :02:59. | :03:02.
in Yate itself, looking for the teenager wearing a grey hooded top | :03:02. | :03:05.
who threw the bike onto the rails. They are also asking for anyone who | :03:05. | :03:10.
saw what happened or who recognises the bike itself to contact them. | :03:10. | :03:12.
Detectives are continuing to question a man on suspicion of the | :03:12. | :03:17.
murder of the Thornbury vicar, the Reverend John Suddards. Officers | :03:17. | :03:22.
were given extra time yesterday to question Stephen Farrow, who's 47. | :03:22. | :03:25.
He's also being held in connection with the murder of pensioner Betty | :03:25. | :03:29.
Yates in Worcestershire last month. Last night parishioners at St | :03:29. | :03:32.
Mary's Church in Thornbury held a candle lit vigil in the vicar's | :03:32. | :03:37.
memory. It's now more than three years | :03:37. | :03:40.
since a road crash which ended the career of Yeovil Town professional | :03:40. | :03:45.
footballer Darren Way. But, to date, the former midfielder has mot | :03:45. | :03:49.
received any compensation. This afternoon he told the BBC he felt | :03:49. | :03:55.
cheated and vowed to continue his fight in the High Court. Clinton | :03:55. | :03:58.
Rogers has the story. December 2008 and this was the | :03:58. | :04:04.
crash which wrecked Darren Way's career. He was a passenger in the | :04:04. | :04:07.
white van. A car travelling in the opposite direction crossed the | :04:07. | :04:15.
central white lines and collided head on with them. More than three | :04:16. | :04:19.
years and 13 operations later, Darren Way is at least able to walk, | :04:19. | :04:22.
but he'll never play football again. He had expected financial | :04:22. | :04:32.
:04:32. | :04:33. | ||
compensation, but so far he's not received a penny. Every day there | :04:33. | :04:38.
is a memory that takes me back to the accident. Whether it is the | :04:38. | :04:43.
football, the injuries or the legal case. There is not an end of the | :04:43. | :04:47.
story at the moment. The footballer suffered multiple | :04:47. | :04:50.
fractures in the crash - he was in a wheelchair for months. But the | :04:50. | :04:52.
legal battle over compensation is taking considerably longer. At | :04:52. | :04:56.
issue is whether the driver of the other car was at fault. His | :04:56. | :04:59.
insurers, Churchill, are claiming that he suffered a heart attack at | :04:59. | :05:04.
the wheel prior to the crash, therefore he's not culpable. Today | :05:04. | :05:13.
the company refused to comment further. I just was not prepared | :05:13. | :05:20.
for the psychological side of it. Darren Way has made a video of his | :05:20. | :05:23.
long road to recovery. The battle to even walk again. He says that | :05:23. | :05:26.
mentally he's still far from recovered and finds it hard to | :05:26. | :05:32.
accept he's not entitled to be compensated for a lost career. | :05:32. | :05:38.
are completely innocent in all of this. It is certainly frustrating. | :05:38. | :05:44.
When you tell people the situation, they are just as amazed as I am. | :05:44. | :05:48.
The dispute is still going through the courts. A High Court trial will | :05:48. | :05:58.
:05:58. | :05:58. | ||
be scheduled for later this year. We asked the Association of British | :05:58. | :06:04.
Insurers for a, this afternoon. They told us that in cases where a | :06:04. | :06:08.
driver could not have prevented an accident or had no conscious | :06:08. | :06:14.
knowledge of it, then they or their insurers may not be liable. We will | :06:14. | :06:17.
keep you up-to-date with developments in the case. | :06:17. | :06:20.
It's pancake day, Shrove Tuesday, and you're watching BBC Points West | :06:20. | :06:23.
with Alex and Daivd. Yes and stay with us, while you | :06:23. | :06:27.
cook, as there's much more still to bring you tonight. Including: We're | :06:27. | :06:30.
at North Somerset, as the demonstrators have one last chance | :06:30. | :06:35.
to make their points as the council cuts its spending. | :06:35. | :06:40.
And best hoof forward for one of Somerset's finest. We find out how | :06:40. | :06:50.
:06:50. | :06:53. | ||
Grand Crus is shaping up for If you are cooking, save a pancake | :06:53. | :06:56.
for me. Bristol City say they're ready to | :06:56. | :06:59.
start the diggers going on the club's new stadium at Ashton Vale, | :06:59. | :07:01.
following yesterday's news that a judicial review has been dropped. | :07:01. | :07:04.
But before the keys can be turned the campaigners, who want the land | :07:05. | :07:08.
preserved as a village green, say they have one last chance to stop | :07:08. | :07:13.
it going ahead. As this story moves into extra time, Will Glennon | :07:13. | :07:15.
reports. They think it's all over, but it | :07:15. | :07:18.
just might not be. The bitter planning row over the proposed | :07:18. | :07:24.
30,000 seater stadium at Ashton Vale has one more twist. Bristol | :07:24. | :07:26.
City football club certainly weren't celebrating today, but they | :07:26. | :07:35.
are poised to re-start development work as soon as possible. There is | :07:36. | :07:40.
a little bit of work to do it because this could have gone on for | :07:40. | :07:45.
another two years, so we clearly did not want to keep spending money. | :07:45. | :07:50.
We need to start plans going forward again, but as soon as we | :07:50. | :07:53.
are in a sensible position to start, we will do that. | :07:54. | :07:56.
Planning permission had been granted for the 90 million stadium, | :07:56. | :07:59.
but the project was halted by those who wanted the land designated as a | :08:00. | :08:02.
town green. The city council suggested a compromise with part of | :08:02. | :08:05.
the site town green and part stadium, but opponents weren't | :08:05. | :08:11.
happy and a judge said it could go to judicial review. That appeared | :08:11. | :08:19.
to collapse yesterday. So this is the letter that sparked the | :08:19. | :08:23.
excitement. It is from the anonymous individual that is | :08:23. | :08:27.
bringing the case for review. It says that they do not want to | :08:27. | :08:33.
continue any more. It has taken and 80 Stadium campaigners by surprise. | :08:33. | :08:39.
Total shock. Knowing the individual quite well, I know he did not write | :08:39. | :08:45.
the letter. Certainly the content of it was not the same as what he | :08:45. | :08:49.
said that every meeting he had ever been at and he had been to | :08:49. | :08:57.
virtually every meeting we held. What do you think happened? Either | :08:57. | :09:05.
he has been persuaded, or someone is using him for their own ends. | :09:05. | :09:10.
They now have someone else lined up and have asked the High Court to | :09:10. | :09:14.
continue their review. The campaigners have to apply to attach | :09:14. | :09:19.
a new name to the abdication. A judge will decide if it goes ahead. | :09:19. | :09:24.
If it does not, the case is finished and the stadium will be | :09:24. | :09:34.
:09:34. | :09:36. | ||
built. We are expecting that decision within the next few weeks. | :09:36. | :09:41.
Food has become increasingly expensive and it seems that the | :09:41. | :09:48.
number of people struggling to feed families has increased. In 2000, | :09:48. | :09:52.
the trust will trust started the idea of big banks. There are now | :09:52. | :09:59.
more than 170 across the UK and the West. Their aim is to provide three | :09:59. | :10:03.
days' emergency food for people experiencing crisis. Last year they | :10:03. | :10:09.
fared over 60,000 people in poverty, this year that is expected to rise | :10:09. | :10:14.
over 100,000 people. It seems more help could be on hand for people in | :10:14. | :10:19.
Bristol. Charities across the city are joining forces to co-ordinate | :10:19. | :10:26.
efforts to feed those most in need. With food prices going up and up, | :10:26. | :10:32.
places like this are getting more popular if not essential. This feat | :10:32. | :10:38.
bank is in Bristol there are many in the city. Every week people | :10:38. | :10:44.
queue up for her feet past -- parcel. It is something that am | :10:44. | :10:48.
Marie has had to rely on several times. I felt ashamed and | :10:48. | :10:52.
embarrassed because I could not provide for my children. It has | :10:52. | :10:57.
very difficult to get the courage up to walk in, but when I did | :10:57. | :11:02.
finally go in, there were so nice and sat me down with a cup of tea | :11:02. | :11:09.
and some biscuits, had a chat while they sorted out what the die needed. | :11:09. | :11:14.
Big banks are generally run by churches or charities. Individuals | :11:15. | :11:19.
and thick -- supermarkets donate the food. People are referred by | :11:19. | :11:25.
GPs and are given vouchers that will get them a parcel of food to | :11:25. | :11:30.
last three days. Now a new initiative is hoping to co-ordinate | :11:30. | :11:34.
the work of individual charities with the ultimate aim of helping | :11:34. | :11:39.
more people. We believe that working together in | :11:39. | :11:44.
a strategic way is going to mean we are much more effective in terms of | :11:44. | :11:50.
what we do. Back in Lawrence Weston, volunteers are getting ready for a | :11:50. | :11:56.
busy evening. When people come in they often look at the floor and | :11:56. | :12:02.
sometimes in tears. We want to give people a warm welcome. We have some | :12:02. | :12:05.
fantastic volunteers that are greater listening to people. You | :12:05. | :12:10.
just see people leaving quite often with a smile on their face. Across | :12:10. | :12:16.
the country, about 30 million live below the breadline. Of those, 4 | :12:16. | :12:21.
million on not getting the right fit to eat. There is no doubt that | :12:21. | :12:26.
fee banks are a lifeline, but many believe that the fact they need to | :12:26. | :12:33.
exist at all paint a bleak picture of life in 21st century Britain. | :12:33. | :12:37.
Now to politics and a tense meeting tonight because making financial | :12:37. | :12:44.
savings is top of the agenda. This evening there have been protests in | :12:44. | :12:51.
Weston-super-Mare -- Weston-super- Mare. Among the controversial | :12:51. | :12:56.
measures are more job cuts and closing down the council's | :12:56. | :13:00.
dedicated youth service. Our political editor joins us now. What | :13:00. | :13:07.
is going on there? The council started their meeting just over | :13:07. | :13:11.
half-an-hour go in the chamber behind me. We are not allowed to | :13:11. | :13:15.
film it, but we were in sight at the start with a lot of protesters | :13:15. | :13:20.
who put their placards down here and went inside to have their say. | :13:20. | :13:23.
This all centres on North Somerset's endeavours to have a | :13:23. | :13:29.
council tax freeze. That would mean that people in this area would pay | :13:29. | :13:34.
1,150 next year. That is not the only part, it you also have a bit | :13:34. | :13:38.
that goes to the police and a bit that goes to fire and rescue that | :13:38. | :13:45.
is going up by a couple of pounds. Town and parish councils could also | :13:45. | :13:50.
go up. At the centre of attention is what North Somerset is trying to | :13:51. | :13:55.
do and that has caused controversy and protest. Many people are here | :13:55. | :14:00.
at making their voices and feelings known about some of the things that | :14:00. | :14:05.
a been brought in. That includes cuts to youth services and jobs. We | :14:05. | :14:11.
have seen 120 council posts go over the last year. In the next few | :14:11. | :14:16.
years we are expecting a further 160 post ago. The unions say that | :14:16. | :14:26.
:14:26. | :14:27. | ||
People are taking a big hit on this. Their lives are much harder. Be | :14:27. | :14:32.
paid they receive is nothing like it is betrayed in the media. There | :14:32. | :14:42.
:14:42. | :14:44. | ||
is no job security. -- portrayed in the media. The cutting is extreme | :14:44. | :14:51.
and they are cutting many youth services. A dozen new centres are | :14:51. | :15:00.
closing in this area. At Portishead, they refurbished a community centre | :15:00. | :15:05.
for you this. They want to reduce the money and spend it on targeted | :15:05. | :15:13.
work with difficult families. The councils say they have no choice | :15:13. | :15:17.
and say they do it with a heavy heart. We didn't come into politics | :15:17. | :15:22.
to make redundancies and cuts services. That is not what we | :15:22. | :15:29.
should be about. What is calling his it is a poorly funded council | :15:29. | :15:36.
anyway. We are still not getting our fair share of the National Pot. | :15:36. | :15:41.
We have seen some of the protesters coming out of the meeting. They | :15:41. | :15:45.
have managed to have their say. The councillors are getting on with | :15:45. | :15:51.
their debate but this is an authority with a solid Conservative | :15:51. | :15:59.
panel. We will bring you a full update at then made a return at | :15:59. | :16:03.
10:25pm. A manager at Swindon's Great | :16:03. | :16:09.
Western Hospital has resigned prior to a third 24 hour strike by | :16:09. | :16:13.
support workers. Porters and cleaners walked out this morning in | :16:13. | :16:16.
the second day of action. It is over alleged managerial bullying | :16:17. | :16:23.
and harassment by the contractor, carillon. The firm confirmed that | :16:23. | :16:27.
the unnamed manager had resigned, saying he was disappointed that the | :16:27. | :16:32.
strike was continuing. They have been without a home for | :16:32. | :16:36.
more than a decade but now some of the country's most historic | :16:36. | :16:40.
aircraft are getting a permanent home in Gloucestershire. | :16:40. | :16:43.
The Jet Age Museum were split up 12 years ago and the collection has | :16:43. | :16:53.
:16:53. | :17:03. | ||
The jet fighter goes into service. They were the pride of the air re F | :17:03. | :17:10.
-- RAF. Now many of them like a whippet and broken, waiting to be | :17:10. | :17:16.
rebuilt for the new Jet Age Museum. Some have deteriorated rapidly. The | :17:16. | :17:24.
vampire, the aircraft fuselage was made of balsa wood and ply. All of | :17:24. | :17:31.
these aircraft will be restored and put back together. It has taken | :17:31. | :17:36.
John and the other trustees 10 years to raise the 250,000 they | :17:36. | :17:44.
need for the museum. It sounds as if it is not very much money but to | :17:44. | :17:49.
raise that money, to house old aeroplanes which people referred to | :17:49. | :17:54.
as bits of rusty old metal, is a difficult thing to do. Asking | :17:54. | :17:59.
people whether they want a museum, everybody wants to have an aviation | :17:59. | :18:06.
museum. When you ask for money, they say, no. Not all the planes | :18:06. | :18:16.
:18:16. | :18:16. | ||
are in pieces. It is a plane that was once flown by the World War II | :18:16. | :18:21.
fighter pilot, Douglas Barder. This is the only one of its kind in | :18:22. | :18:28.
existence. Once the museum is open, this will be the centrepiece, a | :18:28. | :18:38.
:18:38. | :18:39. | ||
replica of the E 28, the first British jet plane. Built in 1948. | :18:39. | :18:43.
Sydney was a teenager when he worked on the project at the | :18:43. | :18:49.
Gloucester aircraft company. It was the best time of my life. It was | :18:50. | :18:57.
like making a model. My job was marking of all the ribs and | :18:57. | :19:03.
templates and making the ribs. I went on to the assembly. Sydney is | :19:04. | :19:07.
hope for the new BCM opening will inspire future generations, giving | :19:08. | :19:14.
them a chance to see the wonders that once ruled the skies. -- a new | :19:14. | :19:20.
museum opening. In sport, we find out how racehorse | :19:20. | :19:26.
trainer, David pipes, is preparing for the Cheltenham hospital. | :19:26. | :19:35.
And can Swindon Town make it eight wins in a row? | :19:35. | :19:40.
It is an incredible run. Seven consecutive wins and counting in | :19:40. | :19:44.
the league and a Wembley final to look forward to. Swindon continue | :19:44. | :19:52.
their promotion bid tonight as they take a on Shrewsbury. Paolo Di | :19:52. | :20:00.
Canio's side are full of confidence. Their latest win was a 2-1 at lead | :20:00. | :20:06.
on Hereford at the weekend. Keep going and go to the top. I prefer | :20:06. | :20:14.
to stay at the top. Everybody thinks it is more pressure. Give us | :20:14. | :20:24.
:20:24. | :20:27. | ||
a chance to go to the top. In my team, there are many players who | :20:27. | :20:31.
have never won anything in their career. They are very young and | :20:31. | :20:37.
have desire. They have a real chance to win. Cheltenham, who are | :20:37. | :20:42.
second in the table, hope to fend off the challenge of Swindon. They | :20:42. | :20:48.
take on AFC Wimbledon tonight. The side will be boosted by their win | :20:48. | :20:52.
over Dagenham and Redbridge on Sunday. | :20:53. | :20:57.
Somerset batsmen for Joss Buttler had a debut to forget in England's | :20:57. | :21:01.
one-day international match against Pakistan. Coming in at number five, | :21:01. | :21:06.
he was out second ball for a duck. His county colleague, Craig quays | :21:06. | :21:12.
where Ted did better as he scored 43 in a partnership of 109. -- | :21:12. | :21:22.

Craig Kieswetter. They had four -- four balls to spare. | :21:23. | :21:28.
This year's Cheltenham Festival is three weeks away. The top race is | :21:28. | :21:34.
the Gold Cup. It is promising to be a thriller with Kauto Star going | :21:34. | :21:39.
for his third win. There is a worry in the yard at them as some of the | :21:39. | :21:43.
horses have a cough and tomorrow's media day has been cancelled | :21:43. | :21:46.
although Nicholls has said his courses are clear at the moment. | :21:46. | :21:54.
There are no problems at David Pipe's stables. His top Cheltenham | :21:54. | :22:01.
hope is Grands Crus. The star of the yard. Grand cru has | :22:01. | :22:11.
:22:11. | :22:16. | ||
-- Grands Crus is ready. He must be our best chance at the | :22:16. | :22:23.
head Festival. He is the best horse we have. This morning, David Pipe | :22:23. | :22:29.
paraded his top Cheltenham hopes. They will be his 6th festival from | :22:29. | :22:34.
-- since taking over from his father, Martin. These are nervous | :22:34. | :22:40.
days ahead of the top meeting of the season. It is a massive four | :22:40. | :22:47.
days. It is what your season is gauged on. Once again, the | :22:47. | :22:52.
Cheltenham course is suffering from the lack of rain. Nothing in | :22:52. | :22:56.
February so far. They start watering tomorrow but they have | :22:57. | :23:04.
enough supplies so the going will be just as they want it. Report all | :23:04. | :23:08.
the rain for that falls on to the car parks and roofs on to the | :23:08. | :23:14.
course. We are recycling. The trains run hard back into the brook | :23:14. | :23:18.
and we pump it round again. Which horse should punters be | :23:18. | :23:25.
looking at as wants to back? I am trying to win my father's race. The | :23:25. | :23:34.
jockeys' race. Our father is a nice up and coming horse who will go for | :23:34. | :23:39.
one of the handicaps. He has done nothing wrong so far. A most yards | :23:39. | :23:43.
have seen numbers reduce as the economy struggled but numbers here | :23:43. | :23:49.
on the up again. A good festival for the stables will only help that. | :23:49. | :23:53.
We will have plenty more news on the build up to the Cheltenham | :23:53. | :23:59.
Festival over the coming weeks. I am very excited about that. | :23:59. | :24:04.
We were hearing about the lack of rain at Cheltenham. Tonight, with | :24:04. | :24:14.
:24:14. | :24:15. | ||
Tonight, we will be using some of the patchy rain and drizzle. Rain | :24:15. | :24:24.
will be making a return through the second half of tomorrow. It is a | :24:24. | :24:31.
windy day than we have been seeing earlier in this week. You can see | :24:31. | :24:37.
the next 24 hours. Here is the rain that is due to come our way for the | :24:37. | :24:43.
second half of tomorrow. It will continue as we run into the | :24:43. | :24:50.
afternoon and evening. A windy day for us all. A moderate breeze | :24:50. | :24:55.
through this evening and tonight. Those patchy outbreaks of rain will | :24:55. | :25:03.
fade away. A frost free evening for most of us. I doubt we will see | :25:03. | :25:08.
temperatures lower than five Celsius. Tomorrow morning's rush | :25:08. | :25:17.
hour will start on a dry a note. It will be a windy morning. The first | :25:17. | :25:20.
outbreaks of rain into the western parts of Somerset and then these | :25:21. | :25:30.
outbreaks of rain spill across East words and will turn heavier. -- | :25:30. | :25:40.
:25:40. | :25:46. | ||
Temperature tomorrow, somewhere about 10 or 11 Celsius. They will | :25:46. | :25:52.
be offset by the winds so not a particularly great afternoon. The | :25:52. | :26:02.
whole flock continues overnight. -- He'll fog. We are in for a mild | :26:02. | :26:11.
spell of weather. By the end of the working week into Saturday, we have | :26:11. | :26:15.
a cold front and they will return to the average for this time of the | :26:15. | :26:23.
year. For Thursday, a cloudy day with temperatures around 13 Celsius. | :26:23. | :26:29.
Very mild overnight into Friday. We start to get this cooler feel | :26:29. | :26:34.
overnight into Saturday. Saturday looks like a decent day with plenty | :26:34. | :26:44.
:26:44. | :26:44. | ||
Whether it is maple syrup or lemon and sugar that you may prefer. Many | :26:44. | :26:48.
of you are celebrating Shrove Tuesday tonight. | :26:48. | :26:52.
Golden syrup for me. By children took part in the annual | :26:52. | :26:57.
pancake race in high-street followed by the mascots' race. | :26:57. | :27:02.
have got myself a Lehman said that will keep me all right for the day. | :27:02. | :27:10.
Sad that we lost. A brilliant time. Great fun. Everyone had a great | :27:10. | :27:14.
time. For how does it feel to be holding the special frying pan? | :27:14. | :27:23.
Very proud. I will put this up at work. In Westminster, Martin | :27:23. | :27:31. |
