Good evening and welcome to BBC Points West. The headlines tonight: | :00:11. | :00:14.
A controversial campaign by animal lovers. They put up posters | :00:14. | :00:19.
claiming that eating meat is making us dangerously fat. | :00:19. | :00:21.
A life inside - praise for Shepton Mallet prison, despite big cuts to | :00:22. | :00:25.
its budget. Meet Roger - is he the most | :00:25. | :00:31.
economical water user in the west? And Bristol makes it through to the | :00:31. | :00:41.
:00:41. | :00:42. | ||
top three in the contest to find Good evening. A vegan campaign | :00:42. | :00:44.
group has targeted Gloucester, saying that eating meat will lead | :00:45. | :00:50.
to an early grave. A poster has gone up showing a coffin shaped pie | :00:51. | :00:55.
saying, Fight Obesity - Go Vegan. The campaigners say they've chosen | :00:55. | :00:58.
the city because a new mortuary has just opened which can accommodate | :00:58. | :01:08.
:01:08. | :01:14. | ||
Health services have had to adapt to an obesity epidemic. There are | :01:14. | :01:19.
now special ambulances, wider wheelchairs and stronger operating | :01:19. | :01:24.
tables. And now, although it is not the first in the country, any more | :01:24. | :01:30.
tree has opened that can cope with bodies wake up to 50 stone and that | :01:30. | :01:36.
is why the city have been targeted by this poster. Some of it has | :01:36. | :01:43.
already been torn down. billboard tells it like it is. We | :01:43. | :01:50.
want people to be aware that eating meat pies and pastis is detrimental | :01:50. | :01:54.
to their health. Eating meat is also detrimental to the environment. | :01:54. | :01:58.
They campaign has not gone down well with an industry that relies | :01:58. | :02:04.
on people eating meat. This Butcher says that he is all for a healthy | :02:04. | :02:11.
diet, but PETA are scaremongering. Meat is very good for you and I | :02:11. | :02:21.
:02:21. | :02:22. | ||
don't know many butchers who are ill. Although obesity has to be | :02:22. | :02:29.
tackled, this poster is not the way to get the message across. However, | :02:29. | :02:34.
research carried out at the Harvard Medical School says eating meat can | :02:34. | :02:40.
shorten your life. Having a vegan diet can help with things like | :02:40. | :02:48.
heart disease. Only thing is meat and dairy do provide essential | :02:48. | :02:58.
vitamins. Meanwhile, PETA say they have not decided whether they will | :02:58. | :03:02.
replace their poster or if it is the start of a much wider campaign | :03:02. | :03:06.
to fight obesity. Joining us now is Tam Fry from the | :03:06. | :03:15.
National Obesity Forum. Good evening. We have bigger | :03:15. | :03:19.
ambulances, reinforced hospital beds and now a mortuary in | :03:19. | :03:22.
Gloucestershire that has to be bigger to do with it these people. | :03:22. | :03:28.
What is going on? Well, I think you have had an interview with a | :03:28. | :03:34.
butcher that has said there is nothing wrong in eating meat. We | :03:34. | :03:38.
have eaten meat for centuries and we have not been fat. The most | :03:38. | :03:43.
important thing is the way you eat it and the amount you eat. Meat | :03:43. | :03:47.
will not make you fat, it is the quantities you consume and | :03:47. | :03:52.
particularly if you do not take the physical exercise to burn it off. | :03:52. | :03:56.
Wyatt are we getting fatter? There are a number of reasons and you | :03:56. | :04:02.
have to be careful, or PETA have to be careful when doing this kind of | :04:02. | :04:06.
exercise that they are not insulting those people who for many | :04:06. | :04:10.
reasons are obese and they have a disposition to become a piece, | :04:10. | :04:20.
:04:20. | :04:22. | ||
particularly because of genetic reasons. What is the solution? Is | :04:22. | :04:25.
it down to each individual responsibility and discipline? | :04:25. | :04:29.
solution is really people taking personal responsibility and been | :04:29. | :04:38.
educated. One of the things we are lacking at the moment is that | :04:38. | :04:42.
people who have a tendency to become obese are not educated in | :04:42. | :04:52.
:04:52. | :04:57. | ||
good food. Unfortunately, sometimes they don't cook and rely on ready | :04:57. | :05:02.
meals and junk food. Thank you for joining us. | :05:02. | :05:04.
Shepton Mallett prison, the oldest working jail in the country, has | :05:05. | :05:08.
had hundreds of thousands of pounds axed from its budget. But a radical | :05:08. | :05:10.
merger with Erlestoke prison in Wiltshire has helped staff cope | :05:10. | :05:13.
with the cuts and the Somerset establishment has been awarded top | :05:13. | :05:15.
marks by independent inspectors. Our Home Affairs Corresopondent | :05:15. | :05:18.
Steve Brodie went to see for himself. | :05:18. | :05:20.
The exercise yard at Shepton Mallett hasn't changed very much | :05:20. | :05:26.
since the jail opened for business in 1610. Apart from a small gym, | :05:26. | :05:31.
it's the only area where offenders can move freely. 70% of the 189 | :05:31. | :05:36.
inmates are serving life for murder. The rest are seeing out long | :05:36. | :05:41.
sentences for serious sex offences. This 400-year-old prison has not | :05:41. | :05:45.
escaped the Government's spending cuts. 700,000 has been slashed | :05:45. | :05:49.
from the budget here. Savings have been achieved by sharing staff with | :05:49. | :05:54.
Erlestoke prison in Wiltshire. Andy Rogers is not only the | :05:54. | :05:57.
Governor here at Shepton Mallett, but he is also in charge of | :05:57. | :06:01.
Erlestoke. The cuts mean that he and other staff travel backwards | :06:01. | :06:08.
and forwards the 22 miles which seperate the two prisons. And in a | :06:08. | :06:11.
bid to make up for the budget reductions, there are now links | :06:11. | :06:19.
with local businesses. Efficiencies are everywhere in the public sector. | :06:19. | :06:25.
We will not compromise aware security. We will reduce risks | :06:25. | :06:30.
through rehabilitation. We are linking in a different way with | :06:30. | :06:36.
outside industry and the voluntary sector. We need to reduce risks | :06:36. | :06:40.
with prisoners and we cannot do that in isolation. | :06:40. | :06:43.
Given the type of offender, you would expect an atmosphere of | :06:43. | :06:47.
tension or frustration at the long years behind bars. The prison has | :06:47. | :06:49.
141 cells with 24 where offenders have to share. There are six | :06:49. | :06:54.
prisoners here over 70 and the average age is 47. But a recent HMI | :06:54. | :07:03.
report praises the prison for its relationships. Prisoners have work | :07:03. | :07:07.
hard to build those relationships with staff. It is a community, | :07:07. | :07:13.
prisoners Lippiett 24 hours a day. Staff work here at least 39 hours a | :07:13. | :07:16.
week so it is important to have good relationships. | :07:16. | :07:20.
One prison officer told me that as the inmates are here for long | :07:20. | :07:22.
periods they look after their own envionment. Drug offending is | :07:22. | :07:25.
almost non existint and the inspection by the prison service | :07:25. | :07:27.
revealed few cases of bullying and described Shepton Mallett as "safe". | :07:27. | :07:30.
A description shared by the woman responsible for the jail when the | :07:30. | :07:40.
Governor is away at Erlestoke. way you are treated by offenders is | :07:40. | :07:43.
related to how you treat them. Providing you treat them decently, | :07:43. | :07:52.
they have no reason other than to treat you decently. I have no | :07:52. | :07:57.
concerns at all about working with male offenders. I have only ever | :07:57. | :08:07.
:08:07. | :08:09. | ||
worked with male offenders and I feel very safe here. | :08:09. | :08:13.
A little over a year ago there was a question mark over the prison's | :08:13. | :08:16.
future, but with the sharing of costs and staff with Erlestoke, | :08:16. | :08:19.
that fear has disappeared. The old Civil War jail is not for closure | :08:19. | :08:22.
just yet. You are watching BBC Points West. If you are still on | :08:22. | :08:27.
your Easter holidays, lucky you! Still to come - no more of their | :08:27. | :08:32.
time buses for thousands of homes in Bradley Stoke. And a marathon | :08:32. | :08:36.
undertaking - we meet the man who is getting ready to run from Paris | :08:36. | :08:41.
to London. For decades they were the only way | :08:41. | :08:44.
for many young people to get started in farming. Tenant farms, | :08:44. | :08:47.
owned by local councils and rented to those without the means to buy | :08:47. | :08:52.
their own land. But a new survey claims that in the last decade more | :08:52. | :08:55.
than 1,000 have been sold off by councils struggling to make ends | :08:55. | :09:00.
meet. In the West most councils are selling rather than keeping. But | :09:00. | :09:03.
there are a few areas bucking the trend. Clinton Rogers has been | :09:03. | :09:13.
examining the differences in a tale of two farms. | :09:13. | :09:16.
Ben and Neville are both tenant farmers. Both have councils as | :09:17. | :09:25.
their landlords. Yet their fortunes couldn't be more different. Ben's | :09:25. | :09:29.
Farm is owned by Somerset County Council. Short of cash, they have | :09:29. | :09:33.
sold 18 of their agricultural holdings in the last three years | :09:33. | :09:41.
alone. Ben's Farm is not on it for sell list yet, but he feels when | :09:41. | :09:45.
his tenancy runs out in three years that could change. This is meant to | :09:45. | :09:50.
be a secure place for someone like me to get into farming. It is | :09:50. | :09:57.
difficult. Land prices are rising, so I cannot afford to buy anywhere. | :09:57. | :10:03.
Contrast that with this dairy unit just 20 miles away. Neville's | :10:03. | :10:07.
landlord is Dorset County Council, who have decided to invest in their | :10:07. | :10:13.
farms. They have spent more than to have and 50,000 hit improving farm | :10:13. | :10:19.
buildings. Neville's future looks secure. They have developed their | :10:19. | :10:25.
plan over the last 10 years to improve the farms they have got and | :10:25. | :10:32.
it beat tenants more of a viable chance of making a success of it. | :10:32. | :10:36.
survey by a farming newspaper claims that thousands of farms have | :10:36. | :10:41.
gone and now farmers' leaders are calling for a change of heart among | :10:41. | :10:46.
its local politician. They are selling of the family silver in the | :10:46. | :10:50.
short-term interest. Whereas keeping these farms is a sensible | :10:50. | :10:55.
thing to do. We have a tale of two counties here. Dorset have been | :10:55. | :11:00.
smart, Somerset has been stupid. Somerset save the decision to sell | :11:00. | :11:06.
his financial and they have raised 10 million to invest in local | :11:06. | :11:12.
services. Prudent housekeeping, they say. Short-sightedness, say | :11:12. | :11:15.
their opponents. Airbus in Bristol will benefit from | :11:15. | :11:18.
a new order worth around 2 billion. It means jobs at the design | :11:18. | :11:23.
facility in Filton should be safe for the foreseeable future. | :11:23. | :11:27.
Indonesian airline Garuda has agreed to buy 11 of the A330 planes. | :11:27. | :11:30.
Prime Minister David Cameron says he hopes other British firms will | :11:30. | :11:40.
:11:40. | :11:51. | ||
also profit from the sale. One man from Gloucestershire is more | :11:51. | :11:58.
prepared than most fog of dry spell. Roger Cox is practically self- | :11:58. | :12:01.
sufficient when it comes to water and despite being connected to the | :12:01. | :12:05.
mains, he hardly ever it needs to use it. | :12:05. | :12:12.
Check in upon suppliers. Roger Cox does not need to worry though about | :12:12. | :12:16.
where the next few gallons are coming from. He has got his own | :12:16. | :12:21.
underground tank. All the water that comes off this garage goes | :12:21. | :12:28.
into this tank. When it is full, the over float goes underground to | :12:28. | :12:35.
a tank that Warhol 2,500 gallons of water. That in turn is pumped up | :12:35. | :12:40.
into a big tank in the loft, which then suppliers all the taps in my | :12:40. | :12:45.
house, with the exception of one. Roger has lived here his entire | :12:45. | :12:50.
life and he has always done the same. To him, water is a precious | :12:50. | :12:55.
resource we should use sparingly. He only has one tap in his house | :12:55. | :13:03.
that is connected to the mains water. His bills are low - just 34 | :13:04. | :13:09.
last year. Of course, not everyone can be as water efficient as Roger. | :13:09. | :13:13.
Getting set up to this extent takes time and effort, but he says it is | :13:13. | :13:19.
worth it. And he may be bright. Thames Water customers are already | :13:19. | :13:26.
subject to a hosepipe ban and Business owners are concerned. | :13:26. | :13:32.
under the understanding we can use hosepipes for work purposes, but | :13:32. | :13:38.
house owners cannot use them to water their gardens. I think the | :13:38. | :13:48.
bourse need to be made a lot clearer. -- rules need to be made a | :13:48. | :13:54.
lot clearer. If they are not watered, the plants will die. | :13:54. | :13:59.
in Gloucestershire, but just as we can all too aware bit and his top | :13:59. | :14:08.
tips for saving water? Use a water butt, used dirty dishwater for the | :14:08. | :14:18.
:14:18. | :14:30. | ||
garden and don't water the lawn. People living in Bradley Stoke in | :14:30. | :14:32.
South Gloucestershire say changes to the local bus service have left | :14:32. | :14:36.
them cut off and isolated. Wessex Buses say it's been forced to make | :14:36. | :14:39.
the changes because of the rise in fuel prices. From May, there'll be | :14:39. | :14:42.
no service at all until 7.30pm, which residents say will affect the | :14:42. | :14:44.
elderly, disabled and people with young children. Better public | :14:44. | :14:47.
transport - it is meant to be the solution to traffic congestion, | :14:47. | :14:50.
pollution and climate change. But instead of more buses, Bradley | :14:50. | :14:55.
Stoke is getting few were. Cuts to services will mean people living in | :14:55. | :15:00.
the south of the area facing a wall of up to 45 minutes to their | :15:00. | :15:06.
nearest.. A I am very angry. We are not talking about a small village. | :15:06. | :15:11.
We are talking about the town of over 28,000 people. They are | :15:11. | :15:16.
effectively cutting us off from any of the facilities we want to get to. | :15:16. | :15:23.
Wessex Buses will be cutting bus routes, meaning there will be none | :15:23. | :15:33.
:15:33. | :15:36. | ||
at all during the day south of Tesco. I will need to leave 45 | :15:36. | :15:41.
minutes earlier. I will need to walk up to the main note to get the | :15:41. | :15:45.
bus. Wessex have blamed the proposed cuts on the economic | :15:45. | :15:51.
climate, specifically the government's increase in fuel duty, | :15:51. | :15:56.
reduction of their grant and increasing fuel costs. But | :15:56. | :16:01.
passengers saved the service is unreliable and at some bus-stops | :16:01. | :16:07.
there aren't even any timetables. If they cannot make a bus service | :16:07. | :16:13.
in this area commercial, I don't know what services they can make | :16:13. | :16:18.
commercial. I am not an expert in running a bus company, but you | :16:18. | :16:21.
would think that with this number of people, the bus service would | :16:21. | :16:26.
work. The cuts are due to come in on 20th May. Unless an agreement | :16:26. | :16:30.
can be reached with the council, thousands of homes will be left | :16:31. | :16:36.
without a public transport service. Bristol could be the green capital | :16:36. | :16:40.
of Europe in two years time in a competition run by the European | :16:40. | :16:42.
Commission. 19 cities put their names forward, with Bristol, | :16:42. | :16:47.
Frankfurt and Copenhagen now in the final. If we win, Bristol would | :16:47. | :16:51.
have to stage a year of green events. Well, Andrew Plant is out | :16:51. | :17:00.
and about in Bristol right now. It wasn't so long ago that cities | :17:00. | :17:04.
were almost entirely judged on their industrial output and Bristol | :17:04. | :17:08.
was pretty good at that. It left a legacy we can still appreciate | :17:08. | :17:13.
today. But these days, cities are judged on their environmental | :17:13. | :17:20.
credentials and it seems Bristol is doing well in that respect. It is | :17:20. | :17:24.
because of scenes like this one PCT is slugging it out with some big | :17:24. | :17:31.
names in Europe to be crowned European green capital in 2014. | :17:31. | :17:35.
Cycling along the scenic rivers of Amsterdam, or strolling through the | :17:35. | :17:40.
streets of Stockholm - been environmentally friendly is a must | :17:40. | :17:44.
for any self-respecting city. Now Bristol is in competition with | :17:44. | :17:50.
Europe's biggest names, already beating Vienna and Paris to become | :17:50. | :17:54.
green capital of an entire continent. The council are | :17:54. | :17:59.
constantly championing Bristol's green credentials. We care about | :17:59. | :18:09.
:18:09. | :18:14. | ||
higher recycling and in the city centre, you can see traffic sitting | :18:14. | :18:24.
:18:24. | :18:28. | ||
idly. So can Bristol compete? you consider that we actually did | :18:28. | :18:32.
better on the 12 indicators than Paris, Vienna and Brussels, it says | :18:32. | :18:36.
a lot about what we are doing here. We have cause for confidence and | :18:36. | :18:41.
there is a good chance we could win it. So what exactly would winning | :18:41. | :18:45.
do for the city? Last year's holders Hamburg says there are | :18:45. | :18:55.
:18:55. | :18:57. | ||
benefits. There was international recognition. We have finally | :18:57. | :19:04.
succeeded into converting the false image of what Humbert is. We have | :19:04. | :19:10.
industry, but there are a lot of parks and green areas. A I think | :19:10. | :19:18.
there are a lot of green spaces are. -- I think. I am not sure. I think | :19:18. | :19:26.
the council should do more about the rubbish. People like to get out | :19:26. | :19:30.
and walk. They don't want to be driving around polluting the place. | :19:30. | :19:34.
Bristol will find out if it has won the title at the end of June, | :19:34. | :19:37.
leading the way for the whole of the UK for the chance to be | :19:37. | :19:45.
officially voted a very pleasant place to be. So, June, a delegation | :19:45. | :19:49.
from the council will go to Brussels to make Bristol's case. If | :19:49. | :19:54.
they are successful, the city will have the title in 2014. There will | :19:54. | :20:00.
also be required to put on 8 year's worth of green exhibitions. They | :20:00. | :20:05.
are already asking for the public's suggestions of what those events | :20:05. | :20:09.
should consist of. You can put your suggestions for what through the | :20:09. | :20:18.
Council website. -- suggestions forward. | :20:18. | :20:27.
Football now, and Swindon Town fans could be banned from attending away | :20:27. | :20:32.
games. There is a dispute over at the number of officers needed to | :20:32. | :20:38.
police matches. As a result, the game will have to be played behind | :20:38. | :20:43.
closed doors. A man from Bristol will be taking | :20:43. | :20:46.
on an incredible challenge this month, running more than 260 miles | :20:46. | :20:51.
in just eight days from Paris to London. It all starts this Sunday | :20:51. | :20:54.
when Neville Parnell, who's from Hanham, will take part in the Paris | :20:54. | :21:00.
Marathon. He'll then keep running north until he reaches London, | :21:00. | :21:02.
where he hopes to compete in the London Marathon the following | :21:02. | :21:11.
Sunday. And Neville is here with us now. Thanks for coming in to see us. | :21:11. | :21:16.
I can see you have honestly been training. That is a tremendous | :21:16. | :21:26.
:21:26. | :21:26. | ||
thing that you are trying to do. Yes. Hopefully I will get the whip. | :21:26. | :21:31.
After suffering a lifetime of neurological problems, a couple of | :21:31. | :21:37.
years ago I took up running and so far I have done three major | :21:37. | :21:45.
marathons - Paris, New York and Edinburgh. So this year I decided... | :21:45. | :21:55.
:21:55. | :21:57. | ||
It to put them all together! It is quite something, to be inspired by | :21:57. | :22:07.
:22:07. | :22:11. | ||
what has happened to you, but why does it mean so much to you? It is | :22:11. | :22:17.
important to me because it has made me realise is that not many people | :22:17. | :22:27.
talk about neurology. It is a taboo subject and I want to raise money. | :22:27. | :22:33.
If you can do-it-, then it is worth it. You are doing the Paris | :22:33. | :22:41.
Marathon and then running to London. How many miles is that? Between 180 | :22:41. | :22:47.
and 200 miles. You are taking all your possessions? Yes. Everything | :22:47. | :22:56.
is in this back. Or your life is in there. -- or your life. You have | :22:56. | :23:02.
not got a great back-up team? haven't. I am hoping to do it so | :23:02. | :23:10.
low. When I get into London, I am meeting up with some of the staff | :23:10. | :23:13.
who treated me in hospital and they will be running the last few miles | :23:14. | :23:23.
with me. And very briefly, you want to raise 50,000? Yes. I am up to | :23:23. | :23:31.
around 23,000. Thank you for coming in, and good luck. And now | :23:31. | :23:41.
:23:41. | :23:41. | ||
for the weather. Just over might soldier is the back | :23:41. | :23:48.
edge of a big thunderstorm disappearing into North East | :23:48. | :23:53.
Somerset. Tomorrow, a replica of these conditions. Low pressure sits | :23:53. | :24:00.
close at hand. You will see how the showers have been falling and you | :24:00. | :24:09.
will notice that some of them have been pretty heavy. West Somerset | :24:10. | :24:19.
:24:20. | :24:23. | ||
has remained in the clear. There has been some lightning as well. | :24:23. | :24:28.
The bond a risk is easing away and as we go into this evening and | :24:28. | :24:38.
:24:38. | :24:41. | ||
tonight, the shower was well die away. -- the showers will die away. | :24:41. | :24:51.
:24:51. | :24:53. | ||
They could be some frost tomorrow morning as temperatures go down to | :24:53. | :25:00.
two Celsius. Tomorrow morning, pretty much the same as today. We | :25:00. | :25:08.
will followed this a familiar pattern with beach showers Peking | :25:08. | :25:13.
during the afternoon. They are clustered more towards the east and | :25:13. | :25:23.
:25:23. | :25:25. | ||
north of our work region. -- of our work region. That threat of thunder | :25:25. | :25:35.
:25:35. | :25:36. | ||
tomorrow is less than it was today. As we saw today, if you were in the | :25:36. | :25:45.
sunny spells, it feels decent enough for this time of year. | :25:45. | :25:54.
Beyond that, Friday will be showery and you will notice the | :25:54. | :25:58.
temperatures easing away as cold air comes in from the north. That | :25:58. | :26:03.
will also be a feature for the weekend. Showers on Saturday and | :26:03. | :26:09.
Sunday, Monday looks dry. Rain on the way on Tuesday. | :26:09. | :26:18. |
