Good evening. A coroner tod`y spoke you are. | :00:11. | :00:13.
Good evening. A coroner tod`y spoke of "lost opportunities" aftdr a baby | :00:14. | :00:18.
boy died at a Bristol hospital. Rohan Rhodes was treated at St | :00:19. | :00:20.
Michael's in September 2012, because of problems with his heart, but died | :00:21. | :00:24.
two days after he arrived. Laura Jones reports. Rowan was a very | :00:25. | :00:35.
lively baby. The he was ` Hd had a great grip. Yes. Baby Rowan was Fife | :00:36. | :00:43.
weeks old when he died at St Michael's Hospital in Bristol. He | :00:44. | :00:47.
was born prematurely in Swansea and had a problem with his heart and had | :00:48. | :00:51.
been transferred to the specialist unit for treatment. The inqtest | :00:52. | :00:55.
heard that although he was ` poorly baby and needed help to bre`the he | :00:56. | :00:59.
had been in a stable condithon whilst in hospital in Swansda | :01:00. | :01:03.
twochlt days after arriving at the hospital in Bristol, he died. For | :01:04. | :01:12.
three days his parents, Alex and Bronwen, came here looking for | :01:13. | :01:15.
answers to what happened. They blamed their son's death on a | :01:16. | :01:19.
catalogue of errors by hosphtal staff. We are happy that thd coroner | :01:20. | :01:25.
did find some lost opportunhties. We're disappointed that she didn't ` | :01:26. | :01:31.
Go further. Yeah. It should never have happened. Today, the coroner | :01:32. | :01:38.
said there were three occashons on which tests should have been carried | :01:39. | :01:42.
out on Rohan. She went on to say although it's not known what the | :01:43. | :01:45.
results of those tests would have been, these were lost opportunities | :01:46. | :01:49.
which may have resulted in Rohan receiving earlier medical c`re. | :01:50. | :01:54.
Today, the Hospital Trust offered their sincere condolences to Rohan's | :01:55. | :01:59.
family and said that lessons had been learned. We care for some of | :02:00. | :02:04.
the sickest babies around the region. We had to respond to an | :02:05. | :02:14.
enormous number of cases coling through. We pulled in staff and | :02:15. | :02:18.
extra staff to help. I think the team did remarkably well at that | :02:19. | :02:23.
time. Rohan's parents hope that other families in the futurd won't | :02:24. | :02:30.
have to go through the same ordeal. As we enjoyed more welcome sunshine | :02:31. | :02:33.
today, much of the Somerset Levels still remains under water. @ huge | :02:34. | :02:36.
warehouse is keeping people from flooded villages stocked up with | :02:37. | :02:39.
food and supplies, we'll be live there in a moment, but first here's | :02:40. | :02:51.
Andrew Plant. Mark and Sarah Corthine left almost everything | :02:52. | :02:55.
behind. Can you unpack the bags What started in a store rool, now | :02:56. | :03:00.
taking the time of dozens of volunteers, sorting through piles of | :03:01. | :03:04.
clothing. This just one row in a warehouse full of help for those | :03:05. | :03:09.
forced from their homes. From food to shower gel, bottled water, to | :03:10. | :03:15.
blankets, it's not just farlers but families affected by these floods. | :03:16. | :03:19.
The water is still in the houses. You still can't drive down to your | :03:20. | :03:23.
house. I think kind of people think because it's sunny, because it's | :03:24. | :03:27.
dying down slightly, the water has gone and we are back in. It's not | :03:28. | :03:31.
the case. It will be months. Afternoon, a long walk in w`ders to | :03:32. | :03:38.
see what can be salvaged now. The photos and memories that no amount | :03:39. | :03:47.
of donations can ever replace. Paul Blackmore is helping to run that | :03:48. | :03:50.
warehouse that we've been hdaring about tonight. We can join him live | :03:51. | :03:55.
now. Good evening, Paul. How much stuff have you got there? I'm | :03:56. | :04:00.
struggling to keep track of how much stuff we have here. The don`tions | :04:01. | :04:04.
have been phenomenonal. Thex are coming in from all around the | :04:05. | :04:07.
country. I wouldn't like to guess. Hopefully, you can see in the being | :04:08. | :04:10.
ba ground, we are pretty well stocked. You say people are generous | :04:11. | :04:17.
from everywhere? Doe anywayses from Essex `` donations from Essdx and | :04:18. | :04:23.
Newcastle. It has gone out puickly. A lot of families the collecting | :04:24. | :04:28.
food and blankets. Give us `n idea, Paul, if you can of the scale of the | :04:29. | :04:33.
need? The scale of the need, we are getting hundreds of families coming | :04:34. | :04:37.
in every day picking up supplies. Lots of houses under water. Lots of | :04:38. | :04:42.
houses that are cut off. Thdre are hundreds and hundreds of volunteers | :04:43. | :04:45.
giving up their time and helping these families. It's a commtnity | :04:46. | :04:49.
response to a community dis`ster. What would they do without xou? I | :04:50. | :04:54.
don't know what they'd do whthout us. When families come in they are | :04:55. | :05:00.
in tears. Tears in their eyds to see people's generosity. To see how the | :05:01. | :05:03.
community is am coulding together and supporting each other. Ht really | :05:04. | :05:08.
has been overwhelming. To bd clear about this, it isn't a government | :05:09. | :05:12.
scheme or a council scheme, being done by people for people? That s | :05:13. | :05:16.
correct. The I got involved a couple of weeks ago. Went down sorting some | :05:17. | :05:20.
clothes. Straightaway it became quite obvious that the scald of this | :05:21. | :05:24.
operation was bigger than wd could imagine. We secured a warehouse and | :05:25. | :05:28.
we filled it. We filled the warehouse within a couple could of | :05:29. | :05:32.
days and donations are still coming in and going out. Good stuff. Thank | :05:33. | :05:36.
you for doing a great job. Thank you for joining us tonight. No problem. | :05:37. | :05:50.
Thank you. A Somali teenager from Bristol, who's campaigning `gainst | :05:51. | :05:53.
young girls becoming victims of mutilating surgery, has recdived a | :05:54. | :05:55.
promise that the Government will write to all schools about the | :05:56. | :05:58.
issue. Fahma Mohamed presented the Education Secretary, Michael Gove, | :05:59. | :06:01.
with a petition signed by more than 200,000 people yesterday. I'm | :06:02. | :06:04.
thankful for every single pdrson who signed the petition, who supported | :06:05. | :06:07.
us along the way. Ban Ki`Moon, Malala, everyone. If it wasn't for | :06:08. | :06:13.
him, he would never have, you know, met us, let alone agreed to what we | :06:14. | :06:19.
wanted, which is amazing. Jtst a reminder that our series on the | :06:20. | :06:23.
Great War is continuing herd on Points West and on BBC local radio | :06:24. | :06:26.
tomorrow. Alex Lovell will be reporting on the exploits of a pilot | :06:27. | :06:30.
who was the first man to down a zeppelin. Rex Warneford's story will | :06:31. | :06:36.
be on BBC Wiltshire at 8.15`m. Now for the weather with Ian. Thank you | :06:37. | :06:41.
very much. Rain is spreading its way ever eastwards during the course of | :06:42. | :06:45.
tonight. Some will be moder`tely heavy and fairly persistent. It | :06:46. | :06:50.
should clear out of the east of our district by the rush`hour tomorrow. | :06:51. | :06:54.
Temperatures down to four to six Celsius. Tomorrow will brighten up | :06:55. | :06:59.
through the course of the morning. The windy story of the night will | :07:00. | :07:02.
die down. We will usher in showers into the afternoon. Some of those | :07:03. | :07:07.
heavy, maybe hail and lightning It will clear up into the evenhng, but | :07:08. | :07:11.
only for a short period. Looming behind me comes a next systdm that | :07:12. | :07:15.
will feature over night Thursday into Friday. Temperatures tomorrow | :07:16. | :07:20.
eight or nine Celsius. The outlook is uncertain for Friday and | :07:21. | :07:23.
Saturday. It could be rain, it could be snow, it could be strong winds. | :07:24. | :07:31.
breeze blowing as well. Tricky into the weekend. And now we have the | :07:32. | :07:38.
national forecast. Good evening. We know it has been a | :07:39. | :07:43.
wet winter but it has also been mild and across England and Wales, | :07:44. | :07:49.
lacking in snow. The last day of the season which we measure on Friday, | :07:50. | :07:52.
might provide a bit | :07:53. | :07:53. |
