Good evening. A teacher frol a school in West Somerset has been

suspended after claims tape was stuck over pupils' mouths bdcause

they were too noisy. The chhldren, all aged between 10 and 11, go to

Danesfield Church of England School. The head has apologised and says a

full investigation is under way Our Somerset correspondent Clinton

Rogers reports. Unusual uses of sticky tape wasn't

meant to be on the curricultm at this school in rural West Somerset.

Was everything all right today at school? For the pupils it w`s a

painful lesson. We were talk ago pit and she got sellotape out and asked

tape over our mouths. All of you? Yes. Did it hurt? Yes. Some people

got bad rashes and this girl had her lips bleeding. Parents say they are

disgusted with what happened here yesterday. If we as parents did that

at home we would have all m`nner of people on our backs and aftdr us and

why should it be any differdnt for a school? Absolutely terrible.

Upsetting to be honest. What do you think should happen to the teacher?

I think she should be not allowed to work with children again. After

hearing the story from his child, one parent actually went to the

police but he was told this wasn't a criminal matter, it was somdthing

for the school and the parents to sort out. I can assure you that we

take what has happened to bd entirely wrong. It should h`ve not

happened. The school has tonight issued a letter to parents

describing this as an unaccdptable incident. We take all alleg`tions

very, very seriously. The wdll`being of our children is vital to us. An

incident happened yesterday, following that incident a tdacher

has been suspended while a full and thorough investigation takes place.

The school has just become `n academy. This wasn't the mark it was

hoping to make in its first week. A Yeovil man has been sentenced to a

minimum of 18 years in prison after being found guilty of murder.

Gobinath Vellasamy, who's 36, stabbed a woman to death in August

last year. Today a jury unanimously found him guilty of murder `nd he

was given a life sentence. The Swindon Town striker Nile Ranger

has been found not guilty of raping a woman in a hotel room last year.

The 22`year`old denied attacking the woman at a hotel in Newcastle while

he was still playing for Newcastle United.

An investigation is being c`rried out into how the death of a

seven`year`old child after heart surgery in Bristol didn't show up on

official figures. Luke Jenkhns died in 2012 after developing

complications following surgery at the Bristol Children's Hosphtal His

parents say his death wasn't recorded properly. Our health

correspondent Matthew Hill reports. Luke Jenkins' death after c`rdiac

surgery is one of several bding investigated by an independdnt

inquiry. Now his parents have discovered that his death w`sn't

recorded in official figures compiled by the Bristol Chidrns

Hospital. `` childrens Hosphtal Hospital death rates are crtcial.

Bristol has slipped from nulber three out of ten to seven over

recent years although this hs still considered safe. For the ye`r that

Luke died the official stathstics say there were no deaths of children

who had Luke's type of heart operation. Luke's parents complained

to the medical director of the NHS, Sir Bruce Keogh and they've had an

e`mail back from his office. It says:

Two years on and still no answers, still no truth from them. It just

means everything is more difficult, they shouldn't be putting us through

this. They put us through enough taking Luke and to put us through

extra stuff as well, which hsn't needed, is pretty disgusting. The

hospital say they take the recording of mortality data very seriously and

that when they discovered this in January they reported it to the

national registry. They say that as they haven't been able to gdt to the

bottom of why this happened they suggested a joint investigation with

Nicor and the office of Nathonal Statistics. The hospital sax even

when `` even when they take into account Luke's death their lortality

rate for this type of operation remains within the expected range.

Now, flooding has dominated the headlines here since before

Christmas. But for those catght up in the floods, it's been

life`changing. Tonight on BBC One in the West we have a special programme

debating all the issues raised by the devastation in Somerset and

asking what the future holds. And you can see that just after national

weather in a few minutes tile. Meanwhile, the weather conthnues to

cause travel disruption. Colmuters between Bath and Bristol face delays

of up to an hour while traffic is diverted away from a road whth a

severe case of water damage. Engineers are busy working on the

A431 Kelston Road but say it will be closed for at least six months. And

train operators say they'll soon be able to inspect the line ne`r

Bridgwater which has been underwater for a month. Services have been

badly disrupted because of the weather, but today Network Rail said

as soon as the floodwater goes down, they should be able to run ` limited

service. We really need to see the bottom of the embankment to do an

assessment. We are hoping to do that as the waters go down even further.

If all goes well we may be `ble to put some service back in within a

couple of weeks. That's largely depentedent on the state of what we

find `` dependent. There is more news and information on your local

widespread frost and patches of fog, as well. Once we clear that out of

the way a pleasant day is on offer with generally speaking a good deal

of sunshine at times and it will be feeling quite mild for the lajority.

in through the course of thd afternoon. That cloud is likely to

be fragile, so still breaks in that and the winds will be light. It will

be a dry day, cloud or not. Temperatures will respond in the

brighter spells, up to about ten or 11. Some of you may be sitthng at

about eight or nine but feeling comparatively mild. A look `t the

outlook: Through Thursday and Friday we do have more cloud around, some

patchy light rain at times. Similar story to the weekend but next week

is looking promising with hhgh pressure in charge.
