Welcome to BBC Points West with News at Six. It's goodbye from me. | :00:00. | :00:07.
Welcome to BBC Points West with Sabet Choudhury and Alex Lovell Our | :00:08. | :00:11.
main story tonight: Behind the white door. The family who live in the | :00:12. | :00:15.
house which became a symbol of the floods return home for the first | :00:16. | :00:27.
time. They can't use them again It doesn't matter. And the comlunity | :00:28. | :00:33.
which rallied around to help. Now MPs ask them to write a report into | :00:34. | :00:35.
the rescue effort. Also in the programme: Tears for a | :00:36. | :00:48.
champion. Somerset's Big Bucks bows out after failing to win at | :00:49. | :00:59.
Cheltenham. Plus, the pub tills are ringing We | :01:00. | :01:03.
assess the how the festival is boosting Cheltenham's local economy. | :01:04. | :01:07.
And we meet The Voice contestant singing live in Bristol tonhght | :01:08. | :01:10.
along side X Factor winner @lexandra Burke. | :01:11. | :01:18.
Her plight made headlines around the country as floodwater engulfed her | :01:19. | :01:23.
home and the waters crept hhgher up her white front door. Carol John's | :01:24. | :01:29.
house in East Lyng in Somerset has been under water since Christmas. | :01:30. | :01:33.
The rising water forced her and her family to move to a hotel in | :01:34. | :01:37.
Taunton. Today she's been b`ck for the first time. Fiona Lamdin was | :01:38. | :01:40.
with her. Much of this house has been sitting | :01:41. | :01:45.
underwater since Christmas. I was with the family back in February as | :01:46. | :01:49.
they were forced to leave. Five weeks on and the last of thd water | :01:50. | :01:53.
has finally drained away, in its place oozing mud, dead rats and a | :01:54. | :02:01.
filthy stench. This is the first time I've seen your door not | :02:02. | :02:05.
underwater. And it's the first time Carol has been home, her first time | :02:06. | :02:14.
back inside. This is awful. It's disgusting. And in the kitchen, the | :02:15. | :02:19.
force of the water has empthed all the cupboards. It's just motldy and | :02:20. | :02:31.
wet. I don't know where to look At its peak, the water was lapping just | :02:32. | :02:38.
below the work surface. It's silly little things like the hot water | :02:39. | :02:44.
bottles. They can't use thel again. Stupid things. The fridge h`s | :02:45. | :02:53.
floated six foot across the kitchen. If we look inside, this weekly shop | :02:54. | :03:01.
a month ago will have to go. It s all gone off. This is the lounge. | :03:02. | :03:10.
It's covered in water. And now covered in fungus. It's the same | :03:11. | :03:21.
room just a week ago. And this is the other side of the front door. | :03:22. | :03:25.
There's a tide mark going across the door. For many, this door w`s the | :03:26. | :03:33.
image of the floods but behhnd it lives a family who are starting from | :03:34. | :03:36.
scratch again and are finding that incredibly hard. | :03:37. | :03:45.
A volunteer group based in Burrowbridge has been asked to | :03:46. | :03:48.
report to the Government on how effective the help for flood victims | :03:49. | :03:54.
has been. The Flooding on the Levels Action Group, or FLAG, will compile | :03:55. | :03:58.
a report for MPs about how helpful or not the response has been from | :03:59. | :04:01.
The Environment Agency, fird services and the Army. But `s Andrew | :04:02. | :04:05.
Plant reports, their feedback is unlikely to be entirely poshtive. | :04:06. | :04:12.
The day before Christmas Evd, on 23 December, the very first taste of a | :04:13. | :04:21.
two`month ordeal. By six January, many sandbagged homes had already | :04:22. | :04:24.
lost their fight with the flooding, the road to Muchelney cut off. On | :04:25. | :04:30.
the 24th, as whole villages succumbed, the local council | :04:31. | :04:39.
declared a major incident. Ht meant, people were told, the possibility of | :04:40. | :04:45.
Army intervention. And it's that kind of planning and the response | :04:46. | :04:48.
that FLAG members like Alfrdd Van Pelt will be reporting back on. We | :04:49. | :05:01.
have agreed we will put togdther a list of specific incidents that show | :05:02. | :05:06.
the failure of the services and in Cobra terms, I wonder what their | :05:07. | :05:09.
reaction will be. Environment Secretary Owen Paterson recdived a | :05:10. | :05:15.
hostile reception on the 27th. Army boots were finally on the ground at | :05:16. | :05:21.
the end of the month. Then on five February, the helicopter hovering | :05:22. | :05:26.
over Fordgate and Moorland. That meant many simply abandoned their | :05:27. | :05:34.
homes and didn't return for weeks. Many now feel that with earlier | :05:35. | :05:37.
intervention and more energdtic help from agencies like the Army, some of | :05:38. | :05:40.
the flooded homes could havd been saved. All the agencies and county | :05:41. | :05:54.
council taking over the relhef efforts and the police trying to | :05:55. | :05:57.
look forward, they are five weeks behind. That effort is conthnuing | :05:58. | :06:05.
today and for many weeks to come as victims clear their homes and | :06:06. | :06:08.
gardens. FLAG's report will say much of the Government help was luch too | :06:09. | :06:14.
little, far too late. The image of a stranded car on the | :06:15. | :06:18.
flooded road to Muchelney bdcame symbolic of the extent of the winter | :06:19. | :06:21.
floods. It featured on medi` reports from across the country. Well, we've | :06:22. | :06:26.
tracked down the owner. He's now reclaimed the car and you c`n see | :06:27. | :06:30.
what damage has been done in our ten o'clock news bulletin tonight. If | :06:31. | :06:34.
you can't wait that long, it's also on our Facebook page. | :06:35. | :06:37.
In other news, officers investigating the murder of a | :06:38. | :06:40.
Bristol teenager say they'rd looking into a number of new leads `fter | :06:41. | :06:44.
yesterday's appeal. 19`year`old Nick Robinson was stabbed to death on his | :06:45. | :06:48.
own doorstep in Stokes Croft last Wednesday. Yesterday his falily made | :06:49. | :06:54.
an appeal for information. The police say a number of people have | :06:55. | :06:57.
come forward. MPs today backed a motion c`lling on | :06:58. | :07:00.
the Government to abandon b`dger culls in favour of vaccinathon. | :07:01. | :07:03.
Anti`cull protestors, including wildlife campaigner Bill Oddie, were | :07:04. | :07:06.
outside Parliament during the debate. A leaked report into the | :07:07. | :07:11.
pilot culls in Gloucestershhre and Somerset found the number of badgers | :07:12. | :07:14.
shot was short of the target needed and many were killed inhumanely | :07:15. | :07:22.
It's been a day of resounding West Country success at the Cheltenham | :07:23. | :07:25.
Festival today but it's also the end of an era. Big Bucks, one of | :07:26. | :07:30.
racing's greatest horses of recent times, was retired after he failed | :07:31. | :07:38.
to regain the World Hurdle title. Alistair Durden is in Cheltdnham for | :07:39. | :07:53.
us. Big Bucks's career ends. There is an auction of racehorses taking | :07:54. | :08:00.
place beneath me at the momdnt. As far as today's race was concerned, | :08:01. | :08:05.
it was billed as a big matchup between Big Bucks and the rhsing | :08:06. | :08:13.
star from Ireland. As one ndwspaper put it today, Lady and the champ. | :08:14. | :08:32.
The end a much loved legend. One last tour of his spiritual home He | :08:33. | :08:38.
put the world hurdle on the map but lost your's injury made this a | :08:39. | :08:45.
challenge too far. It was ndver going as well as it used to. Younger | :08:46. | :08:58.
legs of beating him now. He is 1 years old. It is a fine old age but | :08:59. | :09:08.
he is probably the best hurdler the world has ever seen. He will be | :09:09. | :09:16.
retiring and he will be enjoying his retirement in having a bit of fun. | :09:17. | :09:21.
When I go down to the stablds, I was spoiled rotten. It was an elotional | :09:22. | :09:27.
end for the team to care for him. I didn't think I would be affdcted as | :09:28. | :09:32.
much as I was, but I have looked after him for so long now and it's | :09:33. | :09:38.
always a worry when they run. He feel everyone is watching you. It | :09:39. | :09:48.
was very emotional. I did cry. Or the prerace chatter was of ` two | :09:49. | :09:52.
horse contest so no one saw more of that coming. Victory for thd | :09:53. | :10:04.
Gloucestershire trainer. Evdrything fell into place. He got into a | :10:05. | :10:09.
lovely rhythm and travelled well through the race all the wax. He got | :10:10. | :10:17.
up the hill well. It was a day dominated by West Country trainer is | :10:18. | :10:27.
winning the first five races. And it was a good day for Somerset's David | :10:28. | :10:33.
with two winds. But the headlines today will belong to Big Bucks. A | :10:34. | :10:39.
fabulous day for the West Country trainer 's. Has to be said, not a | :10:40. | :10:45.
grey day for the Irish. It didn t stop them being here in thehr | :10:46. | :10:50.
numbers, adding plenty of lhfe and colour to proceedings and spending | :10:51. | :10:57.
lots of money as well. Just remind you, nearly 250,000 people visiting | :10:58. | :11:09.
the festival week. Welcome to Cheltenham. For one week | :11:10. | :11:12.
only, the party capital of the West. And the bar tills are ringing | :11:13. | :11:18.
loudly. If I equate this to a Friday, I will take almost ` week's | :11:19. | :11:26.
take, just on Friday. For those putting the party on, it's not | :11:27. | :11:31.
difficult to keep the crowds happy. You can see the winners. Thdy just | :11:32. | :11:35.
want to dance and party. Thdy are having a drink and they want to | :11:36. | :11:40.
dance and party. So how do xou prepare for the big week? Wdll, for | :11:41. | :11:44.
the town's newest hotel, it's very careful planning and offering a more | :11:45. | :11:49.
laid`back night. Menus, staffing levels. It is the biggest wdek of | :11:50. | :11:56.
the year for us. We are in consultation with residents and | :11:57. | :11:59.
local bars. Just making surd everyone has a good time. There is, | :12:00. | :12:02.
of course, something for evdryone. Most night clubs offer lap dancing | :12:03. | :12:05.
during race week and it's bhg business, with 500 dancers coming to | :12:06. | :12:13.
work in the town. A girl can earn up to at least ?2000 a week during race | :12:14. | :12:18.
week, so a lot of girls want to register on our website. We have | :12:19. | :12:24.
over 2000 girls registered `nd they all want to work. Everyone lakes the | :12:25. | :12:27.
most of it. For the chauffers and taxi drivers, it can almost be | :12:28. | :12:32.
nonstop. Every night is likd a very good Saturday night. People flag you | :12:33. | :12:39.
down and ask you for London's unmanned justice. And for the | :12:40. | :12:43.
punters out partying, all the efforts seem to be worth it. | :12:44. | :12:50.
Brilliant. Fantastic. Vibrant, enjoyable. If you can get into the | :12:51. | :12:58.
pubs. It has just gone 9pm `nd these guys have a very long night ahead of | :12:59. | :13:03.
them. This week, the winners aren't just at the racecourse. Quite a day | :13:04. | :13:17.
at Cheltenham. We still havd a highlight of the festival to come. | :13:18. | :13:22.
We will be telling you who to watch and who to back late in the | :13:23. | :13:23.
programme. Thanks, Ali. And a bit more from | :13:24. | :13:27.
Cheltenham later in the programme. Plus, Jules is in Bristol for us | :13:28. | :13:36.
this evening. I am at an all`star celebrity party | :13:37. | :13:41.
in aid of The Prince's Trust but I'm not sure I have really been invited. | :13:42. | :13:48.
The dream of Bristol Rovers' supporters to have a new | :13:49. | :13:51.
multi`million pound stadium rest with a High Court judge tonhght | :13:52. | :13:55.
He's heard legal arguments `ll day about whether the Memorial ground | :13:56. | :13:58.
should or shouldn't have bedn sold to Sainsbury's for developmdnt. It's | :13:59. | :14:03.
a move which generates millhons for the club but infuriates somd | :14:04. | :14:06.
residents and traders in ne`rby shops. Scott Ellis reports. | :14:07. | :14:12.
Still on the drawing board. Bristol Rovers' ?40 milion 21,000`sdater | :14:13. | :14:14.
stadium at the University of the West of England, paid for bx selling | :14:15. | :14:20.
the Memorial Ground to Sainsburys'. The supermarket plan's been approved | :14:21. | :14:24.
but was back in court today, much to the annoyance of Rovers' ch`irman. | :14:25. | :14:36.
It has cost us and all `` an inordinate amount of money. We are | :14:37. | :14:42.
very confident. Our legal tdam have looked all the aspects of it. | :14:43. | :14:45.
Residents and traders opposdd to the supermarket development brotght | :14:46. | :14:48.
today's case. Arguing counchllors were misled by the city council s | :14:49. | :14:53.
planning report. The city council told the court its advice to | :14:54. | :14:57.
councillors was fair and lawful That's backed by one of those who | :14:58. | :15:06.
voted in favour of the supermarket. Democratically elected people made | :15:07. | :15:09.
this decision and a minoritx of people tried to go to the l`w and | :15:10. | :15:14.
get a judge to overturn what elected politicians put forward. Protestors | :15:15. | :15:16.
raised ?24,000 to launch thhs judicial review. They think the | :15:17. | :15:19.
supermarket's too big for a residential area. We would love | :15:20. | :15:26.
there to be a new stadium as well. Personally, I would like to see more | :15:27. | :15:31.
houses built there. There are other financial options that could be | :15:32. | :15:34.
explored, I hope. Not according to Rovers' chairman, who told le today | :15:35. | :15:38.
there is no plan B, no supermarket, no new stadium. And Rovers | :15:39. | :15:41.
supporters may have to wait weeks for the decision of the High Court | :15:42. | :15:48.
judge. A secure hospital near Bristol has | :15:49. | :15:52.
tightened how it deals with patients who abscond after a death l`st year. | :15:53. | :15:57.
Michael Harris had been at Fromeside for seven years before he ldft | :15:58. | :16:00.
without permission. His bodx was found 24 hours later and an inquest | :16:01. | :16:11.
jury today returned an open verdict. Michael Harris was a paranohd | :16:12. | :16:14.
schizophrenic who killed his friend seven years ago in a quiet street in | :16:15. | :16:23.
Swindon. A damning report sdven years later found this death was | :16:24. | :16:28.
avoidable. Michael Harris h`d been badly let down by the mental health | :16:29. | :16:31.
professionals supposed to bd looking after him. The report listed a | :16:32. | :16:36.
catalogue of failings, incltding failure to make sure he took his | :16:37. | :16:40.
medication and failure to sdction him. After the killing, he was | :16:41. | :16:48.
detained here. But he absconded and his body was found near the | :16:49. | :16:55.
railway. He had fallen more than 30 feet. Staff told the inquest there | :16:56. | :17:00.
was no indication that Mich`el Harris would abscond and th`t he | :17:01. | :17:05.
wasn't suicidal. They descrhbed him as a fragmented and impulsive man | :17:06. | :17:10.
but said they acted approprhately throughout. Michael's familx told me | :17:11. | :17:16.
he died for them on the day he killed his friend. In a statement | :17:17. | :17:21.
they never got a readout, they said he was full of remorse. Thex don't | :17:22. | :17:25.
blame free inside for what happened but the unit has tightened tp how it | :17:26. | :17:30.
deals with patients who abscond Nine months after two men tried to | :17:31. | :17:33.
set fire to a mosque in Glotcester, a new Imam has promised to hmprove | :17:34. | :17:38.
links with the local communhty. Imam Hassan has moved to the citx from | :17:39. | :17:42.
Hull to work at Masjid E Noor Mosque. He says he was sadddned by | :17:43. | :17:46.
the fire there and promises to promote a better understandhng of | :17:47. | :17:54.
other people's beliefs. We need to understand there are people out | :17:55. | :17:59.
there who have negative views and perceptions of Islam and th`t's | :18:00. | :18:05.
where I come into place. My aim is to make the wider community, not | :18:06. | :18:09.
only the Muslims within the community, but also the widdr | :18:10. | :18:13.
community, make them understand what Islam really is and what it preaches | :18:14. | :18:17.
and how tolerant religion actually is. | :18:18. | :18:19.
And there's a longer intervhew with Imam Hassan on our Facebook page. | :18:20. | :18:23.
Now we return to Cheltenham where tomorrow, some of the best horses in | :18:24. | :18:26.
the country will battle it out for the sport's top prize, the Gold Cup. | :18:27. | :18:30.
Let's go back to Prestbury Park to rejoin our sports editor, Alistair | :18:31. | :18:38.
Durden. Certainly, the bookies have it as a | :18:39. | :18:41.
shoot`out between Bob's Worth, the reigning champion, trained by Nicky | :18:42. | :18:44.
Henderson, and Paul Nicholls' Silviniaco Conti, based, of course, | :18:45. | :18:53.
in Somerset. Joining me now is a man you may not immediately recognise | :18:54. | :18:56.
but if we hear this, it might give you a clue! | :18:57. | :19:13.
John Hunt, the BBC's racing commentator in action during the | :19:14. | :19:25.
World Hurdle this afternoon. I have got to ask you about Big Bucks. His | :19:26. | :19:33.
defeat here in January sign`lled the end of the road and he was valiant | :19:34. | :19:38.
today but it was too much for him. Aged 11, what a great career, | :19:39. | :19:44.
though. He owes nobody anything at all. Four wins in the world hurdle. | :19:45. | :19:49.
One of the greatest days of our time. When they announced hhs | :19:50. | :19:56.
retirement, the whole crowd rose up. Sad that he had to go out on a | :19:57. | :20:01.
defeat but what a racecoursd `` racehorse! Let's look at thd two | :20:02. | :20:08.
main contenders. Bob's Worth is the current champion and trained by | :20:09. | :20:11.
Nicky Henderson. He's a nind year old and could have the edge at a | :20:12. | :20:15.
course at which he thrives to take a 3`2 lead in their clashes overall. | :20:16. | :20:19.
Silviniaco Conti won the King George on Boxing Day and beat Bob's Worth | :20:20. | :20:24.
into the bargain. He was also leading Bob's Worth in last year's | :20:25. | :20:28.
race when he fell three fences from home. How would you call between | :20:29. | :20:38.
these two? Bob's work is a tremendous horse. Five races, five | :20:39. | :20:44.
wins. He showed his well`behng in Ireland at Christmas. The other | :20:45. | :20:50.
horse will give him plenty to think about. Last year, he was in front | :20:51. | :20:59.
and going really well. If hd can stay on his feet, and he will give | :21:00. | :21:18.
him plenty to think about. H haven't had a winner either this wedk. We | :21:19. | :21:23.
will bring you all the news tomorrow. | :21:24. | :21:31.
One of the hopefuls on the BBC talent programme The Voice hs in | :21:32. | :21:33.
Bristol this evening, performing with singing star Alexandra Burke | :21:34. | :21:36.
and comedian Omid Djallili. Celestine Walcott`Gordon from St | :21:37. | :21:39.
Paul's made it on to Team Tom two weeks ago. Tonight she's at a | :21:40. | :21:43.
charity dinner in aid of Thd Prince's Trust, which helps | :21:44. | :21:56.
disadvantaged young people. Cheers to you. This is in ahd of The | :21:57. | :22:01.
Prince's Trust, people like Eleanor, who has had money to do | :22:02. | :22:07.
fashion design. One of the number of people in the West to receive funds | :22:08. | :22:12.
from The Prince's Trust to set up a business. Tonight, one of the people | :22:13. | :22:19.
performing is a contender for the voice. Her career started a long | :22:20. | :22:23.
time ago on an altogether dhfferent programme. I performed on staff for | :22:24. | :22:36.
a night and won the overall grand final. That was incredible. I | :22:37. | :22:42.
couldn't believe it. When I heard my name, I looked to my mum in the | :22:43. | :22:45.
audience because I wasn't stre whether I had heard my name or not. | :22:46. | :22:51.
I made eye contact with her and she was like, yeah, it's you. And then I | :22:52. | :22:59.
reacted. My goal was to be signed by the time I was 18. I was 16.5. I did | :23:00. | :23:08.
get signed when I was 18. Unfortunately, it didn't work out, | :23:09. | :23:13.
but the experiences I got from the whole time was definitely | :23:14. | :23:22.
beneficial. The winner of this battle is... | :23:23. | :23:29.
Celestina. The blind audition was one of the most horrific instances | :23:30. | :23:51.
in my life. It's dark, it's silent and it's just you. As I am going up | :23:52. | :24:00.
the steps, the main pool in my head was, please, don't fall over! If you | :24:01. | :24:08.
do fall over, you have to fhnd a way to roly`poly out of it. That was one | :24:09. | :24:12.
of the thoughts that went through my mind. Thank you so much for turning. | :24:13. | :24:23.
It is fantastic being on te`m Tom. It's really flattering, acttally. | :24:24. | :24:31.
Flattering to have sunk and him to not see what I look like, jtst base | :24:32. | :24:41.
my voice, turn. It might be a lot to be on team Tom, but it has `lso | :24:42. | :24:46.
meant a lot to have support from The Prince's Trust. They helped me to | :24:47. | :24:53.
give me confidence and monex to pursue my job as an independent | :24:54. | :24:59.
musician and, with that mondy and confidence, I was able to create my | :25:00. | :25:05.
own EP and album and I am continuing to make music as we speak. Xou are | :25:06. | :25:12.
performing tonight. We will have a quick chat to the MC. Hello, sir. | :25:13. | :25:21.
Will you be dancing tonight? No I don't want to. Why are you such a | :25:22. | :25:30.
big supporter of The Prince's Trust? They get lots of young people who | :25:31. | :25:35.
have fallen on hard times and get them back on their feet. With Prince | :25:36. | :25:40.
Harry, what they have done hs remarkable. I have to support this | :25:41. | :25:45.
work. 800 people in the Bristol area are being helped by The Prince's | :25:46. | :25:49.
Trust. It's a very underesthmated charity. He will be like th`t all | :25:50. | :26:00.
night, I am told. Tell him lany people in Bristol have alre`dy seen | :26:01. | :26:03.
him dancing before and he is a very good dancer! He didn't belidve me. | :26:04. | :26:11.
He has been all shy and quite tonight! | :26:12. | :26:29.
It is a question of this colpetition between sunshine and fog once again | :26:30. | :26:39.
tomorrow. A similar story to today. Some of you will lose the fog and | :26:40. | :26:43.
see sunshine. There were other districts which did not unthl later | :26:44. | :26:52.
in the day. It will merit a Met Office yellow warning. 50 mdtres or | :26:53. | :27:00.
less. One wrong turn of a steering wheel and you are often the scenery. | :27:01. | :27:06.
There will be disruption to commercial flights, too. Whx? High | :27:07. | :27:10.
pressure sits like a balloon over the top of us. At this time of year, | :27:11. | :27:19.
we have enough situations to develop the fog overnight and insufficient | :27:20. | :27:24.
breeze or suchlike to clear it. Broadly speaking, at least, a dry | :27:25. | :27:31.
picture will continue. Tonight, where you have lost the fog, it will | :27:32. | :27:36.
start to re`form and the sale suspect areas affected this morning | :27:37. | :27:40.
will be affected again tomorrow Particularly the Somerset Ldvels, | :27:41. | :27:46.
there will be a number of you who will make up `` wake up to ` murky | :27:47. | :27:56.
start tomorrow. Frost and places. The hours will tick by with no | :27:57. | :28:05.
change in other areas. Wherd exactly will be a question of doubt. But | :28:06. | :28:09.
when the sunshine breaks through, temperatures should get up hnto | :28:10. | :28:16.
10`12dC. Different story under the fog once again. The weekend is | :28:17. | :28:17.
looking decent. | :28:18. | :28:23. |
