chilly old week, George. Rais thank you. That's all | :00:00. | :00:15.
Also tonight: South African authorities say Shrien Dewani will | :00:16. | :00:43.
be extradited to face trial. We find out what next for the Bristol | :00:44. | :00:46.
businessman. The hole problem ` as counchls get | :00:47. | :00:50.
money to fix potholes, we hdar from one victim who fell foul of one | :00:51. | :00:55.
And we find why the worlds biggest boy band are here in Clevedon. | :00:56. | :01:05.
Good evening. The owners of Cotswold Airport have been found guilty of | :01:06. | :01:10.
breaching health and safety guidelines that resulted in the | :01:11. | :01:14.
death of the airport's fire chief. Steve Mills was killed when a gas | :01:15. | :01:18.
cylinder he was moving back in April 2011 exploded. Today a jury at | :01:19. | :01:22.
Gloucester Crown Court decided that Kemble Air Services had failed to | :01:23. | :01:26.
put guidelines in place for the safe use of the cylinders. Our | :01:27. | :01:31.
Gloucestershire reporter Stdve Knibbs is at the court for ts now. | :01:32. | :01:40.
Thanks very much. It was cldar listening to this case that Steve | :01:41. | :01:44.
Mills was a much loved colldague and friend of many people at thd | :01:45. | :01:49.
airport. He was also a retahned firefighter in Wiltshire. There was | :01:50. | :01:53.
a phrase that kept cropping up ` leave it to Steve. It meant that | :01:54. | :01:56.
every project and initiativd he worked on, he did to the best of his | :01:57. | :02:00.
ability and in a profession`l way. It was three years ago whild he was | :02:01. | :02:04.
working alone on such a project Steve Mills was described bx | :02:05. | :02:07.
colleagues as competent and experienced. That he lost hhs life. | :02:08. | :02:11.
He went into work on his dax off to strip out equipment from shhpping | :02:12. | :02:16.
containers donated by the MoD. As he moved a gas cylinder like this one, | :02:17. | :02:19.
it apparently fell and exploded as the mechanism was triggered. In | :02:20. | :02:23.
court it was described as a large and fatal Catherine wheel as it span | :02:24. | :02:26.
out of control at high speed. Steve Mills suffered catastrophic head | :02:27. | :02:32.
injuries. He was discovered by a colleague. A safety cap likd this | :02:33. | :02:35.
one, which would have stoppdd the gas escaping, wasn't fitted. Steve | :02:36. | :02:38.
Mills hadn't told anyone at the airport he was moving the cxlinders | :02:39. | :02:42.
and was working alone. But despite that, the company that employed him | :02:43. | :02:45.
was today found guilty of not assessing the risk. Steve w`s in | :02:46. | :02:52.
charge of the project but ultimately he was a company employee and it's | :02:53. | :02:56.
the company's responsibilitx to manage this because it was for the | :02:57. | :03:01.
company's benefit. So while he was doing the physical actions the | :03:02. | :03:03.
company should have monitordd how we work. Kemble Air Services s`y | :03:04. | :03:09.
they're disappointed at the verdict as they believed no risk assessment | :03:10. | :03:13.
was needed as there were no plans to move any of the cylinders. Dveryone | :03:14. | :03:16.
has to learn these incidents. There's always room for improvement | :03:17. | :03:18.
and we're taking everything on board. We have reviewed our | :03:19. | :03:21.
procedures and implemented some changes but deep down, I don't | :03:22. | :03:26.
believe we failed Steve in `ny way. But the jury came back with the | :03:27. | :03:28.
verdict that they thought w`s appropriate. It hasn't brought Steve | :03:29. | :03:33.
back. We still miss him dearly at the airport every day. He w`s part | :03:34. | :03:36.
of the family and it has hit us very hard. Steve's family were in court | :03:37. | :03:43.
and afterwards his father rdad a short statement. In my opinhon, no | :03:44. | :03:47.
individual person is responsible for the death of my son. In my opinion, | :03:48. | :03:53.
a series of minor irregularhties leading up to a major event resulted | :03:54. | :03:59.
in the accident. His attitude in life was to achieve perfecthon on | :04:00. | :04:02.
anything he undertook to colplete. Time is a good healer but Steve will | :04:03. | :04:06.
be sadly missed for many ye`rs to come. The company will be b`ck in | :04:07. | :04:11.
court in the near future to be sentenced and are likely to face a | :04:12. | :04:16.
six`figure fine. These shipping containers wdre | :04:17. | :04:19.
supplied to the airport by the Ministry of Defence. They come from | :04:20. | :04:22.
Bosnia and were being stored at a depot near chicks breathe. The MoD | :04:23. | :04:28.
say it is routine to supply equipment in this way. Therd were | :04:29. | :04:34.
safety notices up about how the gas cylinders should have been handled. | :04:35. | :04:38.
Gloucestershire police Toby today that they have their cylinddrs | :04:39. | :04:45.
decommissioned and safely rdmoved. `` Gloucestershire police told me. | :04:46. | :04:49.
Kemble Air Services say thex are disappointed because they ndver | :04:50. | :04:53.
realised that the cylinders were going to be moved by Steve Lills. | :04:54. | :04:58.
They will be back in court hn a couple of weeks for sentenchng. | :04:59. | :05:00.
Victim impact statements were handed to the judge by the prosecution all | :05:01. | :05:05.
part of the decisions he has to make when deciding how much of a fine | :05:06. | :05:09.
Kemble Air Services will have to pay. The defence costs are `t least | :05:10. | :05:14.
?104,000 and there is anothdr six`figure sum on top of th`t as a | :05:15. | :05:17.
minimum sentence. That will be decided by the judge in a fdw weeks. | :05:18. | :05:21.
A Bristol man accused of hiring a hit man to kill his wife in South | :05:22. | :05:25.
Africa looks likely to be extradited to face trial. It was November 010 | :05:26. | :05:29.
when Shrien Dewani and his new wife Anni were hijacked by gunmen while | :05:30. | :05:33.
on honeymoon in the country. Shrien survived, while Anni was drhven away | :05:34. | :05:37.
and shot. Mr Dewani, who has suffered serious mental health | :05:38. | :05:40.
problems ever since, has always maintained his innocence. Hdre's | :05:41. | :05:46.
Andrew Plant. Almost three and a half years since | :05:47. | :05:49.
this newly married couple ldft the UK for their honeymoon abro`d. Just | :05:50. | :06:01.
24 hours into their trip, their hired taxi was carjacked on a remote | :06:02. | :06:04.
South African road. The groom, Shrien, was pulled from the vehicle | :06:05. | :06:08.
and bride Anni driven away. She was found dead the next day. A broken | :06:09. | :06:11.
man returned to the UK, suffering from depression and post`tr`umatic | :06:12. | :06:21.
stress. Almost immediately, the accusations began. Zola Tongo, the | :06:22. | :06:24.
driver of their hijacked taxi, was arrested. He confessed to hhs part | :06:25. | :06:27.
in the killing and said Shrhen Dewani arranged it all. Shrhen | :06:28. | :06:30.
Dewani and his family have been through a long court process. Now | :06:31. | :06:37.
all appeals in the UK are over. Still suffering from mental illness, | :06:38. | :06:40.
he now faces extradition next month. Shrien Dewani will then need to | :06:41. | :06:44.
recover in South Africa before he can finally stand trial ` something | :06:45. | :06:47.
Anni's family say is the only way they can ever know what really | :06:48. | :07:00.
happened. Joining us now is Nicolas Clough, a | :07:01. | :07:04.
criminal lawyer. Is there any chance that this extradition won't happen? | :07:05. | :07:10.
There are two possibilities. First of all, if he fronts fresh ledical | :07:11. | :07:16.
evidence, Shrien Dewani can go back to the High Court. Then he can go to | :07:17. | :07:19.
the European Court of Human Rights and claim his human rights `re being | :07:20. | :07:23.
infringed. Is there any point in doing that? There is every point | :07:24. | :07:29.
because the European Court have a reputation for overriding British | :07:30. | :07:31.
courts and if they decide to take the case, they will issue a rule 39 | :07:32. | :07:35.
notice which, while it isn't legally binding, will ensure that the | :07:36. | :07:41.
British government don't extradite him until the European Court heard | :07:42. | :07:43.
the case. In your opinion, hs it likely to go ahead? I think it | :07:44. | :07:48.
probably is. He has employed every legal avenue he can since November | :07:49. | :07:53.
2010 to avoid being extradited. Now, apparently, he's saying that he is | :07:54. | :07:57.
prepared to be extradited. He seems to have turned his mind to the fact | :07:58. | :08:01.
that he will go to South Africa A lot of focus will now turn to South | :08:02. | :08:04.
Africa if the extradition does go ahead. It will because they have two | :08:05. | :08:12.
very high profile cases going on, the Pistorius trial and the Shrien | :08:13. | :08:18.
Dewani trial. What will happen? He can't be arrested in this country. | :08:19. | :08:22.
He will go on a plane and they have to follow the orders of the court. | :08:23. | :08:26.
When he arrives in South Africa he will be arrested by the South | :08:27. | :08:29.
African police. They will then take him to a court where he can make an | :08:30. | :08:33.
application for bail if he wants to. If that is unsuccessful, he will | :08:34. | :08:36.
probably be taken to a secure hospital. Thank you very much. | :08:37. | :08:43.
You're welcome. How exciting has your day bden? Have | :08:44. | :08:48.
you seen anyone famous? Well, lucky Laura Jones has been at Clevedon, | :08:49. | :08:54.
hot on the trail of some superstars. The fans are out in force as | :08:55. | :08:56.
Clevedon welcomes the biggest boy band in the world. | :08:57. | :09:01.
All that to come. A 15`year`old cyclist from Wiltshire | :09:02. | :09:06.
is recovering after he hit ` pothole and ended up in hospital. Ollie Pike | :09:07. | :09:09.
was thrown from his bike and suffered a broken collar bone and | :09:10. | :09:14.
head injuries. Last week cotncils across the West were given lillions | :09:15. | :09:17.
of pounds of government mondy to fix potholes. Just a warning th`t Will | :09:18. | :09:22.
Glennon's report begins with pictures of Ollie's injuries. | :09:23. | :09:27.
This is what teenage cyclist Ollie Pike looked like after his clash | :09:28. | :09:31.
with a pothole. Riding in a competition earlier this month, he | :09:32. | :09:35.
swerved to avoid one set of holes but hit another. I didn't sde it. | :09:36. | :09:44.
Just smack into the hall, straight over the handlebars. I landdd on my | :09:45. | :09:48.
face, rolled back over my shoulder and broke my collarbone. I couldn't | :09:49. | :09:53.
see out of my right eye bec`use of the swelling. There was a rhver of | :09:54. | :09:56.
blood down the road and then I called an ambulance. I've got | :09:57. | :10:00.
Ollie's jacket here that was badly ripped. Ollie's riding shirt and | :10:01. | :10:03.
helmet show the force of thd impact. His mum says she's worried dvery | :10:04. | :10:09.
time he goes out. I think it's appalling. I do the school runs | :10:10. | :10:13.
every day and I travel all the back lanes all the time. I'm constantly | :10:14. | :10:18.
trying to avoid potholes and sometimes you can't. If there's an | :10:19. | :10:23.
oncoming vehicle, you've got to go in them sometimes. I think the state | :10:24. | :10:26.
of the roads is awful and I worry the time. After a record wet winter, | :10:27. | :10:30.
the pothole problem has got worse. Millions of pounds has been given to | :10:31. | :10:33.
councils for repairs. Wiltshire and Gloucestershire got more th`n ? | :10:34. | :10:36.
million. Flood`hit Somerset got ?12 million. Extra crews are already out | :10:37. | :10:41.
at work and have been told to finish by the summer. That can't come | :10:42. | :10:46.
quickly enough for some motorists. Garages are reporting a ste`dy | :10:47. | :10:54.
stream of damaged cars. That tyre has been damaged with impact damage | :10:55. | :10:59.
on to curb or a pothole and that has caused this puncher. The tyre is now | :11:00. | :11:03.
completely scrapped. Not repairable. And just one pothole can catse a | :11:04. | :11:08.
whole range or problems. Yot can get wheel alignment problems, shock | :11:09. | :11:12.
absorbers, springs, all sorts of problems due to the impact of the | :11:13. | :11:15.
pothole. Ollie Pike's familx have complained to the council about the | :11:16. | :11:18.
pothole he hit. He wants to get back on his bike as soon as he's healed, | :11:19. | :11:22.
by which time he hopes the roads might have been made a bit safer. | :11:23. | :11:28.
A convicted paedophile from Gloucestershire has been jahled for | :11:29. | :11:31.
two years in Cambodia for sdxually abusing three young brothers at a | :11:32. | :11:35.
hotel in the capital, Pnom Penh Richard Fruin, who is 36, ldft | :11:36. | :11:39.
Britain after serving a year in prison for producing child | :11:40. | :11:43.
pornography. Fruin was arrested in a guest house in Cambodia last year, | :11:44. | :11:47.
where an eight`year`old boy was also found. | :11:48. | :11:54.
A district judge has described a town councillor as despicable for | :11:55. | :11:57.
stealing more than ?1,200 from the Royal British Legion. Peter Brock, | :11:58. | :12:00.
who was the branch chairman of the Legion in Yeovil, wrote out 23 | :12:01. | :12:04.
cheques to cash while he was a signatory. He's been ordered to pay | :12:05. | :12:08.
the money back and do 150 hours of community service. | :12:09. | :12:21.
Investigations are continuing into how patient records from Frdnchay | :12:22. | :12:25.
Hospital were found on a street in Cardiff. North Bristol NHS Trust, | :12:26. | :12:28.
which runs the hospital, sax they don't know how the papers ended up | :12:29. | :12:31.
in the centre of the Welsh capital, 40 miles away. The documents were | :12:32. | :12:34.
from hospital rounds and contain personal information of 49 patients. | :12:35. | :12:38.
In a statement they have offered their sincere apologies and said | :12:39. | :12:40.
they will be contacting those affected to explain what happened. | :12:41. | :12:44.
Safety procedures are being reviewed at the Royal United Hospital's | :12:45. | :12:47.
maternity unit in Bath. It's after two new mothers had swabs ldft | :12:48. | :12:51.
inside them last month. Its chief nurse says what's happened hs | :12:52. | :12:54.
completely unacceptable and she s issued an apology. The maternity | :12:55. | :12:59.
unit is managed by the Great Western Hospital Trust in Swindon. | :13:00. | :13:10.
The former Swindon town midfielder Alan McLaughlin has been talking | :13:11. | :13:14.
about his battle cancer with. The 46`year`old, seen here playhng at | :13:15. | :13:19.
the County ground, is now a coach at Portsmouth. Tonight, he describes | :13:20. | :13:24.
the moment two years ago whdn the doctors told him he had kidney | :13:25. | :13:29.
cancer. When someone says that word to you, the first thing is fright, | :13:30. | :13:34.
its terror. I was frightened to tell my wife and kids. Then the gravity | :13:35. | :13:41.
hits you. I was told that it was a tumour in my kidney that had to be | :13:42. | :13:46.
removed. Even now it is still a question mark. I got to livd with | :13:47. | :13:52.
that. I've had a couple of scans and they have been good. The last thing | :13:53. | :13:56.
I want is sympathy. Just cole and meet me head on and ask me how I am | :13:57. | :14:04.
and tell you I am fine. You can see the rest of that interview on Late | :14:05. | :14:10.
Kick Off tonight on BBC One. Bristol Rugby have signed W`les | :14:11. | :14:13.
international Ryan Jones on a two`year contract from the Ospreys. | :14:14. | :14:16.
Ryan has just turned 33 and played 75 times for his country, as well as | :14:17. | :14:20.
representing the British and Irish Lions. He could feature for Bristol | :14:21. | :14:23.
this season if they reach the Championship final and the Ospreys | :14:24. | :14:30.
don't make it to their play`offs. After a remarkably mild winter, the | :14:31. | :14:33.
arrival of spring seems to be gathering pace ` and we've certainly | :14:34. | :14:37.
noticed that in the BBC Bristol garden. Lots of greenery in the | :14:38. | :14:40.
background when we've been filming up there ` but has the new season | :14:41. | :14:44.
started to take hold? Here's Jules Hyam. | :14:45. | :14:46.
It's just four days since spring officially started but nature | :14:47. | :14:48.
doesn't really follow the s`me calendar as us. Look, already | :14:49. | :14:51.
there's a massive amount of new growth on some of the plants up here | :14:52. | :14:56.
in the rooftop garden. But how far exactly has spring sprung? To find | :14:57. | :15:01.
out, we've got some help. Two teams today ` our animal hunters `re | :15:02. | :15:04.
equipped with insect pots and spotters' guides that we borrowed | :15:05. | :15:06.
from the Bristol Natural History Consortium. Our plant experts are | :15:07. | :15:18.
raring to go as well. They've got measuring tapes. They've got a | :15:19. | :15:23.
camera and some notepads and pens that we borrowed from the stationery | :15:24. | :15:26.
cupboard. So to work. Lots of ground to cover but what will the teams | :15:27. | :15:30.
find? A lot of ants. Yeah, there's some ants' nests. Yeah, defhnitely. | :15:31. | :15:34.
And some bees. I can see a bee. But we couldn't catch it. To be fair, | :15:35. | :15:38.
that net is quite tricky and it is rather windy two floors up but that | :15:39. | :15:41.
hasn't stopped our plant investigators finding lots of | :15:42. | :15:43.
evidence of the gardens bring back to life. `` a garden springhng back | :15:44. | :15:48.
to life. We found some plants that have new growth and we found this | :15:49. | :15:52.
plant as well. It's really soft and smells nice as well. Plenty of new | :15:53. | :15:56.
leaves, even on the kiwi frtit. It really has been quite an untsual | :15:57. | :15:59.
winter. You might remember that we came up here in January and all the | :16:00. | :16:02.
strawberries actually had strawberries on them. There's still | :16:03. | :16:05.
plenty of flowers and some little fruits there but all of this is new. | :16:06. | :16:09.
All of that growth has come in the last few days. I think it is a | :16:10. | :16:14.
buzzing one. I think it's that one. Our animal team has a probldm. | :16:15. | :16:18.
They've got a spider but thd problem is, they're not sure what khnd of | :16:19. | :16:23.
spider they've found. I think it's this kind. It is that one. Ht is | :16:24. | :16:34.
debatable. It is. It isn't that green. We think it's the large | :16:35. | :16:37.
jewelled spider. And we know it s the buzzing spider. We know it's the | :16:38. | :16:41.
buzzing spider! We'll leave them to ponder that and have a look at | :16:42. | :16:44.
another plant. What are you looking at? These plants. We've found that | :16:45. | :16:49.
it's furry. We don't know for what reason yet but it has furthdr all | :16:50. | :17:05.
over it. `` has `` it is furry all over. It's very unusual. It's under | :17:06. | :17:11.
and on the edges of the leaves. It is a great piece of observation one | :17:12. | :17:15.
of many in just an hour. Ten centimetres of growth on sole | :17:16. | 0:10:19
plants. | 0:10:20 | 0:10:20 |
