there's a first look at the papers over on the BBC News Channel, but | :00:00. | 3:59:59
now on Good evening. A woman who w`s the | :00:00. | :00:23.
innocent victim of a shooting in her 20s has been found guilty of | :00:24. | :00:28.
harassing a victim who left `` a builder who left her home in an | :00:29. | :00:31.
unliveable condition. Donna Small was shot ten years ago during a | :00:32. | :00:35.
night out. She was left with a bullet in her brain. She fotght for | :00:36. | :00:38.
compensation, which she spent on building work ` but when shd tried | :00:39. | :00:42.
to get that money back, a m`gistrate ruled that she and her mothdr went | :00:43. | :00:45.
too far. Steve Brodie reports. She wasn't expected to live. There | :00:46. | :00:49.
are fragments of machine gun bullets inside her brain. This was Donna | :00:50. | :00:52.
Small in August 2006. Two ydars before, her life had changed for | :00:53. | :00:55.
ever. She and her friend Asha Jamma were on a night out in Bristol. But | :00:56. | :01:00.
the car they were in was riddled with bullets. Asha lost the sight in | :01:01. | :01:04.
one eye, Donna was left dis`bled. It's changed everything. I have to | :01:05. | :01:07.
do loads of exercises every morning when I get up. I can't do things on | :01:08. | :01:12.
my own. I'm scared to go outside the house. I can't sleep at night. It | :01:13. | :01:17.
took eight long years for Donna Small to win compensation for being | :01:18. | :01:21.
after being shot down in thd street ` an incident which left her | :01:22. | :01:25.
disabled. She invested her `ward in this bungalow and hired builder | :01:26. | :01:28.
Darren Finnear to carry out the renovation. Solicitors acting for | :01:29. | :01:31.
Donna handed over nearly ?70,00 but when his contract was eventtally | :01:32. | :01:34.
terminated the house was uninhabitable. Alan Wright hs a | :01:35. | :01:41.
chartered surveyor and an independent building expert. The | :01:42. | :01:44.
UPVC subframe has been smashed completely. There are wires hanging | :01:45. | :01:48.
down everywhere. Very subst`ndard. Bare wires. The state of thd site | :01:49. | :01:54.
itself is... Is diabolical. The debris, the loose wires. Thdre's no | :01:55. | :01:59.
regard for health and safetx whatsoever. We asked Mr Finnear for | :02:00. | :02:05.
an interview but he declined. Today magistrates were told the house was | :02:06. | :02:08.
in a worse condition than it had been before the work began. Donna | :02:09. | :02:12.
and her mother Jacqui Probert pursued the builder for thehr money. | :02:13. | :02:15.
They sent him a series of angry and abusive texts, and Donna threw a | :02:16. | :02:20.
small bottle of after shave at him. Bristol magistrates found Donna | :02:21. | :02:22.
guilty of harassment and assault. She was handed a conditional | :02:23. | :02:25.
discharge. Her mother was found guilty of harassment and was given a | :02:26. | :02:30.
community order for one year. The ten`year ordeal has left its toll on | :02:31. | :02:36.
Donna. It's just been awful. I think it's disgusting. I just feel so let | :02:37. | :02:42.
down. There's been a lot of tears, ups and downs. Today the magistrates | :02:43. | :02:49.
described the background to the case as distressing, but said thd course | :02:50. | :02:56.
taken by the women was wrong. An investigation's begun into | :02:57. | :02:59.
allegations that Jimmy Savile may have carried out abuse at a | :03:00. | :03:02.
children's home in Gloucestdrshire. Parklands Home at Whitminstdr closed | :03:03. | :03:08.
in 2002. It's one of more than 0 mentioned in claims against the | :03:09. | :03:11.
disgraced presenter as the result of an anonymous letter. Gloucestershire | :03:12. | :03:15.
County Council says it'll bd carrying out a full investigation | :03:16. | :03:20.
into the allegations. The family of the murdered Somerset | :03:21. | :03:22.
woman Catherine Wells`Burr have handed in a petition at Downing | :03:23. | :03:27.
Street today. It's in opposhtion to the deportation of two of hdr | :03:28. | :03:30.
killers, who've asked to serve the remainder of their jail terl in | :03:31. | :03:34.
their native Poland. Her falily fear the killers' sentences could be cut | :03:35. | :03:40.
if they leave the UK. Ireland's National Trust is | :03:41. | :03:43.
challenging the new nuclear power station planned for Hinkley Point. | :03:44. | :03:47.
It claims people in Ireland could be affected by the plant, which is 150 | :03:48. | :03:51.
miles away from them, and bdlieves they should have been consulted The | :03:52. | :03:56.
government here says it carried out all the necessary investigations for | :03:57. | :04:01.
the ?16 billion project. The keys to the West's first | :04:02. | :04:04.
super`hospital at Southmead in Bristol have been handed ovdr. Not | :04:05. | :04:08.
everyone's happy with the ?430 million scheme, which will see a | :04:09. | :04:11.
downgrading of Frenchay Hospital and mean longer journey times for some | :04:12. | :04:18.
patients. But many have welcomed the changes and say the old second world | :04:19. | :04:21.
war buildings at Frenchay ` which were intended to be temporary ` are | :04:22. | :04:29.
now out of date. Will Glennon has been to Southmead to see thd new | :04:30. | :04:31.
facilities. A mix of steel, concrete and glass | :04:32. | :04:35.
which, combined with doctors and nurses and the latest technology, | :04:36. | :04:42.
promises world class patient care. If you've had a stroke or hdart | :04:43. | :04:46.
attack or been in a car acchdent, this is where the hospital staff | :04:47. | :04:49.
will try and save your life. Juliette Hughes helped design this | :04:50. | :04:52.
area. It's where she'll be working ` and they've tried to get evdrything | :04:53. | :04:58.
in the right place. We went to lots of hospitals and we took all the | :04:59. | :05:02.
best things from other placds and learned some lessons from other | :05:03. | :05:06.
areas. And when we look at how this is now finishing, it's really pretty | :05:07. | :05:09.
impressive. Up on the wards, the rooms are ready for patients. This | :05:10. | :05:12.
is one of our individual side rooms, which is great. I mean, the space in | :05:13. | :05:16.
here is fantastic. 600 of the 8 0 beds will be in private rools with | :05:17. | :05:20.
private facilities. Privacy and dignity are very important for | :05:21. | :05:26.
patients. They need to know that they can have a conversation with | :05:27. | :05:29.
nurses or doctors, or any therapists, which is out of earshot | :05:30. | :05:32.
of people who don't really need to hear it. Also, any examinathon | :05:33. | :05:36.
patients may need can be done in the privacy of this room. It's just so | :05:37. | :05:40.
much better for patients. And while wards are on one side of thd | :05:41. | :05:44.
hospital, all the operations will take place on the other. Thhs is one | :05:45. | :05:49.
of 24 operating theatres in this new hospital. It will be equippdd with | :05:50. | :05:52.
the latest new technology ` scanning, lasers and, of cotrse | :05:53. | :05:55.
X`rays. It will help both strgeons and patients. Having everything in | :05:56. | :06:05.
one place should make surgeons' jobs easier and could even cut the number | :06:06. | :06:08.
of operations. There are sthll some finishing touches being put to the | :06:09. | :06:12.
building but it's on time and on budget. The first patients `re due | :06:13. | :06:19.
through the doors in May. And as that opening day gets nearer | :06:20. | :06:22.
we'll keep you updated on everything you need to know. We're back | :06:23. | :06:27.
tomorrow from 6am, but for now I'll hand you on to Ian for our late | :06:28. | :06:29.
forecast. Hello, good evening. Another showery | :06:30. | :06:37.
day on offer for Friday. Yes, some of those showers will be he`vy in | :06:38. | :06:40.
places but equally there will be some drier, brighter spells as well. | :06:41. | :06:44.
A milder day than today. In some places, three or four degreds up on | :06:45. | :06:47.
today's values. Temperatures tonight instead will be down to abott three | :06:48. | :06:51.
to four Celsius so a fairly chilly affair and that's how things will | :06:52. | :06:54.
start tomorrow with already some showers in abundance. Some of | :06:55. | :06:56.
those, through the course of tomorrow, could be giving some | :06:57. | :06:59.
torrential downpours. Maybe a threat of lightning as well. It is worth | :07:00. | :07:02.
emphasising either side of those, with uncertain distribution, there | :07:03. | :07:05.
will be some drier, sunnier spells. And in those, temperatures will be, | :07:06. | :07:09.
like I said, quite a bit up on today's values. So a bit of mixed | :07:10. | :07:12.
fortunes on the temperature chart. Maybe as low as eight and nhne but | :07:13. | :07:16.
in other places, we could bd getting higher than you're seeing there up | :07:17. | :07:20.
to maybe 12 or 13 Celsius or so The temperatures will definitelx rise | :07:21. | :07:23.
during the course of the wedkend ` easily up to 15, 16, 17 Celsius with | :07:24. | :07:27.
some hazy sunshine around. @nd it will continue to be a case of warm | :07:28. | :07:29.
weather into the start of Hello, as winter becomes spring the | :07:30. | :07:42.
atmosphere contains more energy The shower clouds grow taller. If | :07:43. | :07:45.
conditions are right, you get thunder storms. There have been some | :07:46. | :07:50.
today. Bob took this picture near London this afternoon. The spring | :07:51. | :07:56.
flowers will appreciate the re turn return of warmth. Until then big | :07:57. | :08:01.
showers to come, pushing in across south-west England - some hail and | :08:02. | :08:05.
thunder. Sleet and snow on to the top of the moors. | :08:06. | :08:10.
From Norfolk to coastal England into Northern Ireland. | :08:11. | :08:12. |
