Good evening. An inquest into the deaths of seven | :00:10. | :00:14.
people killed in a motorway pile`up in Somerset has been hearing details | :00:15. | :00:17.
of the last moments before they died. For the second time in a | :00:18. | :00:21.
matter of months, the familhes of the victims came to hear ex`ctly | :00:22. | :00:24.
what had happened the night their loved ones died. | :00:25. | :00:42.
The inquest follows the collapse of criminal proceedings against the man | :00:43. | :00:48.
who was running a fireworks display next to the motorway close to where | :00:49. | :00:55.
the collisions occurred. Orhginally, he faced seven charges of | :00:56. | :00:59.
manslaughter. Those charges were dropped and in the end he wdnt to | :01:00. | :01:04.
trial, accused of just one offence under the health and safety at work | :01:05. | :01:07.
act. When that trial collapsed last December, the West Somerset coroner | :01:08. | :01:12.
ordered a full inquest. So, another hearing to pore over the details of | :01:13. | :01:16.
why and how this happened on the night of November fourth, 2011. The | :01:17. | :01:23.
families who were here said although this was a painful experience, it | :01:24. | :01:33.
was necessary. There will always be something to learn from this case | :01:34. | :01:37.
and any other case. You think an inquest is necessary? Yes, ht does | :01:38. | :01:47.
finalise things, to an extent. It will always be a painful thhng, the | :01:48. | :01:52.
pain will never go. But I al learning more through coming down | :01:53. | :01:56.
here than we did at the Crown Court, I am sorry to say. Today, Wdst | :01:57. | :01:59.
Somerset coroner Michael Rose said that most of the seven victhms died | :02:00. | :02:02.
from crash injuries but one perished in the terrible fire that started | :02:03. | :02:08.
after the collisions. As in last year's court case, there was | :02:09. | :02:10.
conflicting evidence today `bout conditions on the M5 at the time of | :02:11. | :02:16.
the crash. Among drivers called to give evidence, there was | :02:17. | :02:18.
disagreement on whether vishbility had been badly reduced and hf so, by | :02:19. | :02:20.
what, fog, mist or smoke. The coroner said what wasn't in | :02:21. | :02:30.
dispute was that some drivers had become disorientated by redtced | :02:31. | :02:31.
visibility, whatever had catsed it. Somerset County Council has revealed | :02:32. | :02:40.
it spent ?55,000 on legal costs during the departure of its Chief | :02:41. | :02:47.
Executive Sheila Wheeler. That's in addition to the ?40,000 Mrs Wheeler | :02:48. | :02:52.
was paid for her notice perhod. The council says it had to follow | :02:53. | :02:55.
national guidelines throughout the dispute, which saw Mrs Wheeler leave | :02:56. | :02:58.
her duties on full pay last November. | :02:59. | :03:03.
The West of England Local Enterprise Partnership has handed in a bid for | :03:04. | :03:06.
?500 million from the Government Growth Fund. The partnership, which | :03:07. | :03:11.
is made up of business people and councillors, unveiled its plans this | :03:12. | :03:15.
morning. They include money for superfast broadband in Bristol, an | :03:16. | :03:18.
aviation technology centre `t Filton and a scheme to harness tid`l energy | :03:19. | :03:23.
in the Severn Estuary. A decision from Westminster is expected in | :03:24. | :03:25.
July. The operation to start dredging the | :03:26. | :03:29.
Somerset Levels is under wax. It's part of a 20`year plan to try and | :03:30. | :03:33.
provide some flood relief to the area. The cost of this year's | :03:34. | :03:37.
dredging is likely to be around ?5 million. It's still not cle`r | :03:38. | :03:41.
whether it will become an annual event. | :03:42. | :03:49.
Whether or not it occurs is a matter for ourselves and our partndrs and | :03:50. | :03:55.
the communities to discuss `nd make some decisions about how we spend | :03:56. | :03:57.
the money that the government have allocated. | :03:58. | :04:02.
A third of people in the West are worried about funding their | :04:03. | :04:06.
retirement, according to research we have carried out. The government | :04:07. | :04:11.
introduces the biggest shakd`up of pensions in a generation. Wd have | :04:12. | :04:16.
spoken to 1000 people aged between 30 and 65, but have yet to retire. | :04:17. | :04:21.
66% are confident they will be financially secure, or 2% of Ovid, | :04:22. | :04:28.
`` 30% are worried, and confidence falls the younger you are. Regarding | :04:29. | :04:35.
pensions, property and savings, half think their assets will be dnough to | :04:36. | :04:36.
keep them in their old age. For many, pensions are eithdr too | :04:37. | :04:49.
dull or too difficult to bother with. Not this man. There are going | :04:50. | :04:58.
to be millions of people who are not going to have enough money to live | :04:59. | :05:04.
on. One of the UK's top fin`nce firms here, they know the p`tter | :05:05. | :05:11.
backwards. What about here? Fresh from the office, junk Bristolians | :05:12. | :05:19.
work`out at a city gym. There are people suffering pain now bdcause | :05:20. | :05:23.
they know it will bring thel benefit later. That is a good metaphor for | :05:24. | :05:27.
pensions. Are they willing to do the same sort of thing for their | :05:28. | :05:32.
financial future? Not at thd moment. I probably will at some point. There | :05:33. | :05:39.
is the rub. In our survey, people in their 30s were the least likely to | :05:40. | :05:44.
have a pension. 40% said anx pensions or savings they do have | :05:45. | :05:47.
were not enough for a comfortable retirement. I am living for everyday | :05:48. | :05:52.
rather than the future. One thing to think about is choosing to delay | :05:53. | :05:59.
starting a pension for five years will knock around a third of the | :06:00. | :06:05.
eventual pension that you gdt. That much, just for those five ydars I | :06:06. | :06:10.
know it is with me doing, btt I might have to sacrifice another | :06:11. | :06:14.
area. Sacrifice, not an easx message, but has its time fhnally | :06:15. | :06:23.
come? All this week, we are examining the | :06:24. | :06:27.
issues surrounding getting on a bit. For football fans, Late Kick Off is | :06:28. | :06:31.
coming up on BBC One at 11:25pm but for now, it's time to hand xou over | :06:32. | :06:35.
to Ian, who has our late we`ther forecast. | :06:36. | :06:41.
A good deal of dry weather tomorrow, but there will be some fog `round | :06:42. | :06:47.
through the course of the morning, a lot of low cloud as well. Things. To | :06:48. | :06:56.
improve towards lunchtime. We have some showers clearing their way | :06:57. | :07:00.
north, once they do, a dry light will follow. There will be some fog | :07:01. | :07:07.
around in places, especiallx through spot `` through part of Somdrset, | :07:08. | :07:11.
Dorset and Wiltshire. A lot of low cloud elsewhere. The hours tick by, | :07:12. | :07:18.
a lot of the fog will lift `nd break, and we are into an afternoon | :07:19. | :07:22.
of dry weather with sunny spells. By the evening, showers as well. The | :07:23. | :07:31.
temperatures about 16 or 17 Celsius, pleasantly warm, the warmest day of | :07:32. | :07:32.
the week will be Wednesday. Some rain will clear the atmosphere | :07:33. | :07:35.
on Thursday. More information on all of that. Hello, talk of the | :07:36. | :07:43.
day-to-day has been the Saharan dust. If you have no idea what I'm | :07:44. | :07:48.
talking about, here is an explanation for | :07:49. | :07:49. |
